The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“We continue to urge the administration to promptly reimburse all the hospitals that were affected by these unlawful cuts in previous years and to ensure the remainder of the hospital field is not penalized for their prior unlawful policy, especially as hospitals and health systems continue to deal with rising costs for supplies, equipment, drugs and labor,” she said. AHA General Counsel and Secretary Melinda Hatton

Quote II

“I still tease him that when he got blown out by Alabama in that national championship game, I took all the heat off him because I called a beauty queen beautiful. I was the villain that night in the eyes of many, especially the woke journalists with some of the papers around the country,” Sportscaster Brent Musburger

Quote III

“If there were a Republican that was not an election denier, that I aligned with on all the issues, I would be thrilled. Show me a Republican who is not an election denier and I will endorse them.” Mesa Arizona Mayor John Giles

He would rather support a racist.

You are my neighbors, my friends, and the reason for this service. … I hope you stay engaged and continue to fight for your fair share of the city’s resources. It’s hard to say goodbye, but please know that I was in this fight for you.” Nury Martinez, LA City Council Member

The following story has a graphic photo-You have been warned.

We treat teenagers who puke up their food because they are too fat. Teenagers who think they are the opposite gender? Well there's treatment for that. Frankenpenis.

The phrase "moral panic" refers to a fear-driven mass overreaction to a phenomenon that is either false or minor. Witch hunts are the usual manifestation of a moral panic. There are no witches (well, technically not true, at least these days, but the witches didn't poison the well), so to freak out and persecute women because they might be a witch is a classic example of moral panic. The Satanic abuse craze of the 1990s is another. Again: a "moral panic" ensues when there is a mass freakout over something that doesn't exist, or is extremely minor and in no way justifies the size and intensity of the reaction.

The other day, I saw on Twitter someone saying that they are a good liberal and all that, but they are really worried about what they're seeing regarding the emerging culture of the medical and teaching professions encouraging children to transition to the opposite sex. "But," said this person, "I don't want to surrender to a moral panic."

No word if Amber Rose Barnes mistook these critters for tasty venison. Wild horses slaughtered.

The US Forest Service is investigating an incident where 15 horses were shot and left for dead near the northern Arizona town of Alpine.

The horses in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest were found with bullet wounds in their faces, necks, abdomens, and between their eyes, according to wildlife activists.

‘This hateful massacre is incomprehensible and the killer or killers must be brought to full justice,’ said Simone Netherlands, President of the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group.

There are great jobs out there without a college degree. We all suspected this but now we know, "New Study Finds American College Students Extremely Biased and Out of Touch"

Earlier this week, I came across a fascinating and harrowing demographic report from the Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology, analyzing “elite” college students’ political biases.

It explains that college campuses are left-wing — shocker, I know — but moreover, it exposes what happens when insular college students hold absurdly unrepresentative viewpoints.

Across dozens of pages, the report unveils that these students live for several years on an island where religion is shunned, and race somehow correlates directly with political ideology. The gender gap is nearly five times larger than in the general population — as more men wisely eschew college.

And this matters. Remember, despite their naiveté and limited life experience, college students and recent graduates, unfortunately, have an outsized effect on politics.

They frequently work on and eventually lead political campaigns, so if collegians or graduate students tend to be more liberal, Democrat and Republican campaigns are staffed by people more left-leaning than their constituents.

Why tell the truth? It doesn't help the narrative one bit.

EXCLUSIVE: Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was told that the photographer who captured a clash between Border Patrol agents and Haitian migrants in Del Rio had said that the incident was being misconstrued – hours before Mayorkas joined a White House press conference where he didn’t challenge the false narrative.

The Sept. 24, 2021 email, obtained by the Heritage Foundation via a Freedom of Information Act request (FOIA), shines light onto internal deliberations surrounding the controversy in Del Rio, Texas, where Democrats and the White House pushed a narrative that migrants had been "whipped" or "strapped" by Border Patrol agents despite it being quickly debunked.

First of all, I'm confused why wait staff receive tips and the kitchen staff doesn't. I don't care if my service is the best I've ever had but the food sucks. Now that I have that off my fingers.

TikTok has allowed people to bitch just about everything, including tipping. What does the Horde say? Server Says “Foreign” Table Refused to Tip Her Because They Don’t in Their Home Country

She says in the video: "So today my table only tipped me $2 on a $122 because they're from Germany and they don't tip there, right?" The TikToker then moves within the screen of the TikTok to show the green-screened check behind her.

"So, this is the check, guys. What does this look like to you? Let me zoom in."

She zooms in on the check to show the total amount of money written into the receipt. "First of all, I hate when people just write in the total and make you do the math to figure out what the tip is. But anyways, is this $125 or $7.25? Because it kinda looks like a seven, right?"

Then again maybe that's all she deserved................

Perhaps USA Today columnist Rex Huppke and Yahoo! Sports writer Ryan Young should stop the circle jerk and put on their big-boy pants.

Liberal journalists erupted that Troy Aikman was sexist after the "Monday Night Football" commentator remarked on a controversial penalty that it was time to "take the dresses off" with regard to excessive roughing-the-passer calls.

During Monday’s Kansas City Chiefs-Las Vegas Raiders game, Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones appeared to sack Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, forcing a fumble and recovering the ball. But, because Jones landed on Carr as he made the play, officials threw a flag for roughing the passer.

"I hope that the competition committee looks at this during the set of meetings, and we take the dresses off," Aikman said on ESPN, seemingly upset by the call.

I don't listen to Kanye West's music. Really don't follow him much. But, the last time I checked saying something "offensive" was not criminal. If the "Big Guys" can do this to Kanye West. What chance do us ordinary people stand? The Social Credit Score has come to fruition.

A massive bank has debanked another controversial political figure.
Conservative influencer Candace Owens posted an image of a letter allegedly sent by JP Morgan Chase bank to Kanye West which informed him his company’s bank accounts will be closed in late November.

The letter, with the subject line “IMPORTANT: Closing of Our Banking Relationship” gave no explanation or reasoning behind the censorship of the prominent rapper.

“Earlier today I learned that @kanyewest was officially kicked out of JP Morgan Chase bank. I was told there was no official reason given, but they sent this letter as well to confirm that he has until late November to find another place for the Yeezy empire to bank,” Owens stated on Twitter.

Last December, David Chapin was visiting the Miami area for a sailing regatta when someone recommended that he go to Playmates strip club, an adult entertainment joint tucked between a storage facility and a recording studio off Bird Road in Coral Gables. Around 8 p.m., he headed to the club to enjoy a drink and a few dances before the sailing event the next day.

Chapin recalls that he sat down at a bar inside the full-nudity club, next to a scantily dressed exotic dancer, and ordered a cocktail. He claims she invited him to a "VIP" room in the back, where she promised a dance and cocaine to keep the party going. He remembers following her.

New York changes gun buyback after seller gets $21,000 for 3D-printed parts
Participant used a 3D printer to make firearm parts in bulk that he then exchanged for gift cards

The attorney general of New York has changed the rules of a state gun buyback program, after a participant exploited the system by using a 3D printer to make firearm parts in bulk that he then exchanged for $21,000 in gift cards.

The seller, who identified himself by a pseudonym, said he traveled from West Virginia to a gun buyback on 27 August in Utica, New York, to take advantage of a loophole in the program – and to demonstrate that buybacks are futile in an era of printable weapons.

At the buyback, the seller turned in 60 printed auto sears, small devices that can convert firearms into fully automatic weapons. Under the rules of the buyback, hosted by the office of the attorney general, Letitia James, and city police, that entitled him to $350 for each of the printed parts, including a $100 premium, since they were deemed “ghost guns” lacking serial numbers.

72 EXCLUSIVE: Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was told that the photographer who captured a clash between Border Patrol agents and Haitian migrants in Del Rio had said that the incident was being misconstrued – hours before Mayorkas joined a White House press conference where he didn’t challenge the false narrative.

=====
IIRC, not long after the story broke, Mayorkas took media questions, in Texas, not DC, and stood up for the agents saying they were following their training and procedures. Then Brandon said the agents "will be punished." Mayorkas immediately changed his tune. He is a World Class Scumbag.

The LDS Church's official statement on immigration does call for "compassion to those seeking a better life," but it also states explicitly: "Every nation has the right to enforce its laws and secure its borders and that all persons subject to a nation’s laws are accountable for their acts in relation to them."

You might see that as "soft" on immigration, but it is not open borders. I don't know any basis for suggesting the church supports sanctuary cities.

98 The other reason why Joe is traveling to Oregon is that the Oregon Democratic Party made a teensy mistake.

At most, Oregon is 60%D/40%R, and is adding a Congressional seat.

Oregon used to have five congressional seats: two solidly Democrat, one solidly Republican, one strongly Democrat, and one 50-50 district held by a long-serving moderate Democrat who was excellent at retail politics (and who is retiring after this term).

The Democrats could have shored up the four D seats (particularly the 50-50 one), and let the Republicans have two seats, which still would have left the Democrats overrepresented in Congress.

But no - they had to grab the new Congressional seat. Earl Blumenhauer, Congressman-For-Life from Portland, has no intention of being in even a slightly competitive district, so he siphoned off a lot of Democrats.

You now have one solidly Democratic district, one solidly Republican district, one strongly Democratic district, and three leaning Democratic districts.

The D's may lose all three leaning Democratic districts. Tee hee!

172 The notion that servers don't get taxed on cash tips is pretty much history at this point. Restaurant owners have been required to report quarterly receipts to the IRS that include tip estimates based on volume of sales formula for many years. Servers reported tips have to match the range reported or you can get audited.

Good restaurant owners I knew encouraged pooling of tips for all the staff (biased opinion as a former cook - but it works), paid good wages and had health benefits.

180 I often defend tipping.
It is a way to efficiently manage workers in the most direct way possible. And these workers are key to just about every restaurant, but what they do can not be judged by anyone except the customer at the table.

This is why the practice persists. Good waiters (appealing and friendly) get good tips and leave the customer with a positive experience. Bad ones look for other work where personality is not so important.

The system is not perfect, but all other systems (seniority, floor manager, etc.) are worse.

Ruger M-77 International. Bolt action (very much Mauser based design), 18" barrel, Mannlicher stock (wood all the way to the muzzle, steel cap at muzzle end of wood).

Buttplate to barrel, the same length as a typical Winchester .30-30, but in .308, the Ruger brings another 50% more oomph and a couple hundred yards more effective range. CZ made a very similar rifle, but in a 20" barrel.

Mine was in .308, wearing a Leupold Mk III 6x42 fixed power scope. Small, handy, light, and at about 2 MOA quite accurate enough out to 400 yards. Basketball sized muzzle blast though. Short barrels do that thang!

I finally got a very nice pancake batter by using a yeast starter aged over night made from a cup of mashed potatoes and a cup of flour. In the summers I will make a fruit smoothie or poach an egg in cooked tomatoes.

I hate cold cereal and I would rather have toast with butter than cereal in milk.

Not sure we stayed out too long, but we certainly went too far. There was a ski jump hill at a local park. The ski jump itself was dismantled, but the hill remained. And it took all of our youth and idiocy to take a runner sled down that hill at breakneck speed. Had to fall of before you got to the end of the runout or you would hurtle into the woods, which is what my sister did, and we were pretty sure she was dead and ran off screaming. I do not think that Mormons have the market cornered- look at the Church. Look at the army. Look at the bureaucracy. Concentrated power in the hands of a hierarchal organization is the most attractive to these commie asshats. To borrow C5's parlance though, I think Flake, Romney et al are not commies per se, just really useful and really idiotic. It does not matter though, the solution is the same.

Even using the phrase "election denier" denotes low intelligence. Literally. This guy may be an auto dealer doing the mayor's thing for laughs, and knows nothing about election process, who knows.

But believing 2020 wasn't massively insecure, and the official outcome extremely dubious - based on the actual facts and how things actually work, as well as laws and the constitution - isn't a serious position. Unless you're stupid and don't know any better.

2: There's a deep-set distrust of oatmeal raisin cookies because there's raisins in them. But nobody's talking about the psycho lunatic who puts Skittles in the M&M cookies

In contemporary political discourse on North Korea, Juche has a connotation of "self-reliance", "autonomy", and "independence".[4][5][6] It is often defined in opposition to the Korean concept of Sadae, or reliance on the great powers.[7] South Koreans use the word without reference to the North Korean ideology.[8]

367 Is there a name for the concept of a country having the industrial base, resource generation and so forth to be a self-sufficient as is possible? My snark brain says 'Sanity.' It seems like there should be a term for the idea/practice.

Autarchy is one, another term is economic localism. Some people call it antifragility, where you source goods and services as broadly as possible and are self sufficient on essential goods. Of course some people consider that a throwback to the medieval manor system too, but that system was created out of the collapse of a fragile system of economic interdependence on distant manufactures.

There is a lot to be said about marginal efficiency with the English selling wool cloth to the French for wine, but you have to be willing to find alternate sources for those materials, or substitutes, when you go to war with your supplier.

370 A little light reading I recently did on psychopaths brought up, at least to me, an interesting tidbit: It seems most of us assume a psychopath is violent, oftentimes a killer or serial killer. What the article stated was that something like 90% of CEOs, surgeons and politicians are psychopaths; the are able to manage the 'psycho-' part into a mainstream career. The murdering psychopaths are the minority but they get all the glory.
Posted by: RickZ at October 12, 2022 11:44 PM (emlEe)

Put forth as the reason why psychopathic/sociopathic traits are fairly common; at least not uncommon. This is really quite strange - you don't hear about any psychopathic cows, for example - so there must be some social and survival advantage to having them. Uncontrolled, one with such traits becomes the worst of criminals; but if he has enough mental control and self discipline to bury the worst parts, he can be on a fast track to the Presidency.

Posted by: Tom Servo at October 12, 2022 11:52 PM (r46W7)

371 I don't remember the entire article at this moment (it was a good read, though), but one of the things it mentioned was something about psychopaths and their concomitant risk-taking that makes for good CEOs and surgeons. That they make for good politicians makes them, IMAO, part of the serial killer group.

373 If they were serious about trying to transition away from fossil fuels, they would be persuing an 'all of the above' strategy. This would allow for the prosperity to be able to develop the tech. They seem to be trying (retardedly and this might be discounting their possible feudal motives) to go for a stress being the mother of invention model.

The thing is, while historically true that strides have been made during conflict, our current stratospheric rise has actually been fueled by the opposite. Freedom=prosperity=innovation=vitality.

I've been hearing a lot about hedging your bets with something of value that can survive a collapse. Clearly, cash isn't safe, nor investments, nor 401ks etc.

Obviously, job #1 is surviving. Then, doesn't this lawless government suck everything out of the economy on its way down? The rationale is that in 5 or 10 years, when things stabilize, you have something of value left to start over. Whatever "starting over" might consist of.

If you have grapes (or plant them) when you press for juice, save the skins and remaining pulp, cook it down, run it through the food mill to get the pips and the skins out, and add sugar by volume 1:1 with the pulp, and 1/4 C of lemon juice, and cook it down to the soft ball stage judged by how it comes off the wooden spoon when you stir.

If you plant grapes, I suggest you plant one seedless vine as well, I think I have a seedless Interlaken. Everyone hates SunMaid raisins for a reason, but your home made ones are exquisite.

"Pioneer gene." That's interesting. My Hungarian Grandma had it. She packed up and left the Austro-Hungarian Empire with three little kids (three more added in the good ol' US of A, including my Dad) to come to America because she saw something bad was coming with the Balkan War(s). It took a lot of gutsy "pioneer genes" to pack up and leave pretty much everything behind to travel overseas to a new country halfway across the globe, a country where you knew no one nor even the language; the best you could hope for was finding a Hungarian-based area in which to get yourself settled in. My Grandma ever did learn a lot of English but as my cousin affectionately said at her funeral: "She was a tough old bird."

436 I made a chicken pot pie today out of a chicken stew I made a few days ago. I didn't have enough broth saved to make a gravy for it, so I used a ripe tomato chopped up with basil instead.

We get the Costco chicken pot pie occasionally. I've learned that after the first night I need to add moisture to any subsequent meals. My solution is a packet of chicken or turkey gravy. Mix the gravy and pour some over the pot pie and serve.

444 I have brought this up in the past. My current theory.
The problem is over-ambition. There are people who decide they need to conquer all without principles or morality or character. If you are a mormon and you are overly ambitious you go into church leadership and then politics. The scum rises to the top.

Outside the church, these asshats would become lawyers and maybe seek their fortune that way and end up as psychopath traders, or hedge fund guys, or politicians or whatver but in the church the path is a little more directed by that hierarchy.
Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at October 12, 2022 11:37 PM (G+kxT)

That's just not how it works inside the LDS Church. Honestly, "ambition" doesn't count for much. You don't apply for positions in leadership. You don't get called to a position because YOU want it. You get called because the Lord wants you there (faithful view), or more skeptically, because someone else wants you there. Callings to big leadership positions are usually a complete surprise to the person receiving the call.

They were invaders, just stop by when they felt like it unannounced . I moved just far enough away where they had to call first. Some years later my brother in law buys the house next to my inlaws. I said are you out of your fucking mind? Why don't you just crawl up his ass and make a nest?

It took until after the Holocaust for me to see a Jew state in a documentary: 'When people say they want to destroy you, to kill you, believe them!'

But seeing the writing on the wall and still having either the gumption to leave (how many saw but didn't leave for whatever reasons?, we'll never know) or the (oftentimes meager) financial ability to leave (it cost cash to take a boat across the ocean, not to mention the trains to and from the ports; in my Grandma's case, it was central Europe to the Atlantic coast, then to NYC and on to southwestern PA [where Dad was born in 1918]).

Whatever one calls it or for whatever reason, in some people (often younger and more willing to take risks in general), it is a compulsion.

I had just a snippet of that gene as I moved from VA to NYC where I had no family, no prospective job, only knowing (and temporarily moving in with) my grade school friend.

Forty plus years and an ex-wife later, . . .

456 Hence my citation of the credentials of Russell M. Nelson and Dallin H. Oaks. Both of them had incredibly successful careers in specialized professions, nearing the end of those careers, certainly making plans for retirement to enjoy the fruit of those careers, when they were suddenly called to leave the career behind and dedicate themselves to Church service.

The callings were a surprise, but they immediately changed plans, wrapped up the career within a few weeks, and started the new position knowing that the only retirement now would be when the Lord calls them home. It is not driven by ambition at all.

You're equating politicians with Church leaders -- they are not the same thing. It's true that most LDS politicians have been Church leaders, but that's because MOST middle- aged men in the Church have served in leadership positions at one time or other.

Some years back when my kids were small, were were out in the county watching fireworks. Some idiots tried setting off fireworks in the adjacent field, and it started burning. I watched for a while, and at one point told my family it was time to go. About five minutes after I walked away and got into our car, police came by and told everybody else to leave. Problem is people can be either knowingly or unknowingly blind to the dangers around them.

Not true. There are breakout cows. Ask farm people. They will tell you there are genetic 'freak' cows that are genuinely vicious.
Mean cows are a thing, they are well known. Aurochs are in all of them and it occasionally erupts. Ask a breeder, they'll tell you. There is totally such a thing as a truly vicious cow.

He was never 'my' dog, we just shared space for a while.

We stopped after the first 2 vax shots. If we had Corona, we don't know it, because we refused to self-test ourselves every time we had a sniffle or a sore throat.

About a year ago we put ourselves on a daily supplement routine based on the Zelenko protocol, which has a lot in common with the protocol you linked to. Even the pro-vax doctors were at least shouting for vitamin D at that point.

538 That's just not how it works inside the LDS Church.

I've lived it, my friend. Two good friends of mine were each called to serve a three-year stint as a full-time LDS mission president. One was a pharmaceutical sales rep, and the other a real estate agent.

The sales rep received the phone call and had two weeks to close his business before reporting to his assignment in a different state. This was an unusual situation where he was replacing someone who had to leave unexpectedly for health reasons, or something like that.

The real estate guy had several months to wrap things up, and then went to live in Central America for three years.

Neither one applied for the position. It's true they could have said NO, but no one does. Agreeing to serve wherever and whenever called seems to be the opposite of personal ambition, to me.

Yes, I do. My regular job takes out enough tax so that last year I got about $100 refund. If I'd known about this, I'd have had them take out more, or has SSA take out a few percentage points. There was a line in one of the IRS instructions, I think, saying they may waive the penalty if you paid up completely the year before, and I was.

568 The trouble with withholding from SS, I see, is that you have to choose it when you first sign up. If not, it requires a form you have to *mail* to your local SS office, and another such form to end the withholding. So even if I wanted them to start taking out the max right now, there would be a delay until it happened, and another delay when I wanted them to end it.

You're better off making an estimated payment. If you paid in the amount of your previous years tax liability (how much tax you paid), they will waive penalties . The reason I asked about earned income relates to whether you have reached full retirement age. If you haven't and you earn too much they can require you to repay some of your SS. As far as SS becoming taxable all income is taken into account. If you're single you can earn up to 25k before they start taxing your SS. If you file MFJ, the floor is 32k.

573 Fork withholding, that's operational (and your money) cash, wait till it's sorted out then send them their cut.

Yep. Interest free loan to the gubberment. When Obama did the temporary reduction of SS very few people noticed that the federal withholding amounts went up significantly. A lot of wage slaves got some significant refunds for a couple of years . Very few actually ended up with more expendable income in their pockets on payday
