First-World Problems...

Ah...the trials and tribulations of an old house. That's a steam valve on a 90-year-old radiator and, amazingly enough, it still works! For certain definitions of "work." As many of you know, the valves are sort-of-adjustable, so the steam warms each radiator in the desired order. Ideally the coldest room of the house has the fastest valve so it gets steam the quickest. And the radiators nearest the thermostat should probably get steam more slowly, otherwise the thermostat will detect the set temperature before the rest of the house is warmed up.

At least that's the plan.

But they are old and sticky from years of hard water (my town is famous for hard water!) and thousands of heating and cooling cycles that have done who-knows-what to the metal.

So, you say, "Hey Dildo, what are you, an idiot? Just swap out the valves for the good modern ones that are easy to adjust!"

Except, I have nightmares of cracking off the valve inside the radiator, or even worse, cracking the body of the radiator. And all of them are built into the walls...not one is free standing.

I could just hand the problem off to a plumber, but that would be admitting defeat, and I hate that! Plus, each radiator is several hundred dollars to replace, so I think I will just suffer the almost unendurable agony of rooms that are one degree apart!

Also, I would expect things made about 90 years ago generally to be more reliable than things made more recently, if for no other reason than the old stuff doesn't have a shitload of computer chips.

26 Interesting we are talking about old technology, heat especially, as Europe faces a long, cold winter without power.

My family cabin on Vashon Island had a fireplace with a cast iron insert downstairs and a pot bellied iron stove upstairs. Both had a teapot filled with water to keep it from getting too dry. Downstairs had enough space to put a couple pans on it for cooking. Power was especially sketchy when a storm would blow through and knock down power lines. We typically lost power 5-6 times a season sometimes for days at a time. Never skipped a beat.

Grandpa would scavenge wood from the beach, and occasionally find a big log that had escaped a boom towed by a tugboat to a mill. That would last an entire season!

Prices are about 3x what the box still has for recommended price so I decided he if he wants that junk food he can pay for it himself. Maybe they had some shipping built into their prices but it was crazy.

40 I liked my radiant heat in my last home. I like the lack of murders on my block more though.
Get a nice penetrating oil, spray it on when the radiator is cold and then let it heat up, I've had luck with the heat drawing the oil down into the threads.
If you are not in a hurry... just hit all your radiators once a day for a while.
Then get a good wrench, something tight so you will know if it's turning and not stripping, try to loosen it, if you don't like how it feels give it a quarter turn tight. Then try to back it off. If you are still worried about it, add more oil and tray again later. Don't need to hurry.

The source was Florida health department death certificates that included ICD10 codes I30 thru I50, which include myocarditis, pericarditis, dysrhythmias, sudden death, cardiomyopathy and a bunch of other conditions. Not necessarily autopsy confirmed. To see if there was a time link to vaccine, they compared a 4 week post vaccine period to a subsequent 21 week window, to see if there was an increase above background levels during the 4-week window. Long story short, there was a statistically significant elevation in risk for males in 18-39 y/o age range. 20 cases with one of those codes occurred in the first four weeks compared to 52 in the subsequent 21 weeks. The 4-wk risk was 1.84 times the baseline rate, with a quite wide 95% confidence interval. (i.e.relative risk might turn out to be substantially lower or higher) By comparison in the males >60 y/o there were over 4000 cases with those codes. The small numbers in the younger group are more likely to magnify apparent differences. Not a confirmed causal link. Statistically suggestive.

I just did a sort of similar plumbing job on the old Flx motor coach. I broke a tee off the bottom of the engine, containing a drain valve and a nipple for a circulating block heater. Backed over a spruce tree, I did. The spruce was broken off, too. I found a screw extractor that just fit the 3/8" pipe nipple, tapped it in with a hammer, and put a wrench to it. The broken-off stub of the nipple backed right out, as nicely as you please. All fixed, now. Got 8 liters of antifreeze, and 8 of water in the rad now, and more is indicated. Definitely won't hurt the engine to get fresh anti-corrosion additives, either.

Don't know how it worked, legal-wise in Washington, but in British Columbia, directly north, there were licensed log-salvage contractors who were paid by the timber companies to collect branded logs. The logs, as they were loaded into booms, were branded by being struck with big hammers on the end grain. That left an impression, and the hammers were also inked. It was illegal to possess a branded log if you were not the lawful owner of the brand, or a contractor.

There was also no scarcity of unbranded logs for firewood.

79 In my old house I had a radiant heat system. It was a constant battle to bleed the air out of the system. It really took a lot of attention to keep it running as designed.

No HVAC guys around here wanted to touch it. Radiant systems are very unusual in this area.

Steam heat is hydrating the air. Moist air feels warmer then dry air. I recently replaced a room size fan-forced heater with an oil filled radiator. Exact same btu capability, but the difference in comfort is noticeable. There is no 'wind chill factor' as no fan. There is almost no noise. As the air remains moist, there is no static charge in the carpet. Yes, a few bucks more, but worth it.

105 Born in Oklahoma in the middle of the last century (hint: 29 years ago). When we finally got modern, we had central heat (gas) and a/c.

Never even saw a radiator in the flesh until my Chicago-born lady and I visited up there. We later moved there for fourteen winters. Our building had steam radiators. On those merciless Chicago winter nights, the hissing of the radiators, even the occasional banging, meant comfort.

(Steam radiators were the modernization there; the basement still had a room that clearly had been the coal dump in the past.)

Escaped back to Oklahoma almost three decades ago. The roar of central heat kicking on may not bring quite the same feeling of comfort, but I don't miss futzing with boilers and radiators. And winters are much milder.

I don't even know how to tell you this, but if your steam heat is hydrating anything, you're in trouble.

Hydronic systems with expansion tanks were notorious for picking up a bubble in a fitting that could stay there for years. My hot-water radiators all had a bleed cap. When we did away with the expansion tank, we installed this little "whizzer" just upstream of the (return-side) pump that sizzled a few times, and has now been quiet for years.

I open all the circuits all the way for an hour or so at the start of the season, then set the proportioning valves and don't have to worry about air any more.

Interesting question. I assume the softening salt is NaCl, used to convert dissolved the poorly soluble calcium carbonate/bicarbonate to the corresponding sodium salts, which are soluble.

Once the calcium salts are deposited, the exchange would probably still happen, albeit much more slowly. because heterogeneous reactions are typically kinetically slow to reach equilibrium.

Short version, I suspect the answer is "yes, eventually."

Yes, to be more accurate, a 'tight' steam heat system does not hydrate the air. It just warms the air up, moist or dry. Forced air systems, space-heaters, etc. do take the water out of the air, leaving it less comfortable at low temps (not too mention the 'wind chill factor'). I have a hydroponic system (occasionally) heated with home heating oil. It is the absolute best, but uses a shitload of energy. I'm a little uncertain about the 'science' behind running all the baseboards on the outside walls. It seems to be a system designed by people who sell home heating oil.

166 Brown Cow Cream Top Whole Milk yogurt, Maple flavor. It is so good.

I like the plains. I'm at 2100 ft so it feels a lot like the top of the world. There is a small lake on one side of town and a state fishing lake the other direction. The dog is enjoying it. I love having clear nights, almost every night. I am taking it slow, have met a few neighbors. And the local hardware store is great too.

Not that I want to be one of those guys, but I guess I'm gonna be.

While over in the the Olde Country a couple of weeks ago, I had French yoghurt, which was better than any I've had in the US. So, I made it part of my daily breakfast. Just plain. Tasted great and wasn't loaded with a bunch of crap either.

Italian plain yoghurt was no slouch as well.

187 There are some yogurt brands that taste sour (Nancy's Yogurt comes to mind). I was able to get a Greek yogurt, sweetened with honey, locally and that one is not sour. I don't usually substitute yogurt for anything. I have it for breakfast with blueberries.

You're right, nitrate salts are almost all soluble, but ... I'd be leery of putting nitric acid onto anything I'd want to keep. The course you're proposing could well work, but whether you just created another problem would depend critically on the nitric acid concentration. For my part, I wouldn't do this, because I have no idea what concentration of nitric acid would be low enough not to cause problems.

Thanks! I was suspected of having had a heart attack last year, five months after the vaccine, but after extended testing (incl. cardioangiography and echocardiography) my cardiologist said my ticker was fine (no blockages, or elevation of troponin levels, but ... elevated D-dimer levels, suggestive of a dissolved clot, I understand). My cardiologist thinks I had COVID, and pooh-poohs my testing negative for it. I'm still gradually recovering, but we're still trying to figure what the hell happened that put me in bed for a month (and included overnight stints for observation in the ER).

Lots of rump-engineers will tell you that no closed system should ever have tap water in it. If your real concern is keeping interior air moist, the best you can do is a ventless gas burner. Some may not trust these. One big room on our property has a thermostat-controlled gas fire log. Natural gas has a yuuge amount of water in it, released on combustion. Forced-air gas furnaces have those heat exchangers that force that nice moisture out the flue.
