The Morning Rant: Battling RINO Republicans Who Maintain Power in Deep-Red States

It is disappointing and frustrating, but there are conservative states that are deep-red when the votes are counted for statewide elections, yet they remain under the political control of liberals - albeit under the Republican banner.

You may know Mark Pulliam from his website, Misrule of Law (misruleoflaw.com), which is often linked or discussed at conservative websites, or from legal articles he’s written for a variety of conservative publications.

One reason I’ve followed his writing closely is that like me, he is a refugee from a loony, left-wing city who moved to deep-red East Tennessee. Here in Tennessee, he’s found that the GOP old-boy network is not very interested in the conservative agenda or fighting the culture wars that caused Tennesseans to vote overwhelmingly for Donald Trump. In other words, much of the state GOP would rather join the Chamber of Commerce in advancing the left’s cultural agenda than battling to stop the left’s agenda.

Pulliam decided to try to be part of the solution, so he ran in Blount County (suburban/exurban Knoxville) for a spot on the State Executive Committee of the Tennessee Republican Party. He ran as a write-in candidate and he won the race this past August.

The establishment would not stand for it, so even though the Tennessee Secretary of State had certified Pulliam as the winner, the state GOP retroactively nullified his eligibility and stripped his victory from him.

I’m going to circle back to Mark Pulliam in a moment, but this is an opportunity for me to write about something that’s been gnawing at me, and it relates to Pulliam’s situation.

Liberals and political opportunists who would be comfortable running for office as Democrats in blue or purple states tend run for office as Republicans in deep-red states. It’s the only way they can get elected. In the most recent Republican primary in my county, a little digging revealed that several candidates for down-ballot races (judgeships, commissioners, etc) were clearly not conservative, but the person who wins the Republican primary will win the general election. Name recognition is the most important thing in those races, so if a liberal can get a lot of yard signs out (funded by liberals and Democrats), he is likely to be the Republican nominee, which means he’ll win the general election.

In Hamilton County, TN, the Trump-bashing, RINO son of a former Republican Congressman won the Republican primary for mayor with only 35% of the vote.

Before Weston Wamp decided to run for this office, he courted the national media and received glamour treatment as a “young conservative” who dared to police other Republicans for questioning Joe Biden’s immaculate, fraud-free election. This was in The New Yorker:

Weston Wamp, a young conservative from Tennessee, is on a mission to convince others on the right that Joe Biden won the 2020 election

He subsequently decided to run for county mayor, riding his familiar last name and the lingering popularity of his father among Republicans. He also had a plan, it seemed, to get Democrats to vote in the GOP primary.

His two conservative opponents took 65% of the vote, but with strong election-day turnout for Wamp in heavily Democrat precincts, and with no runoff, he squeaked to a victory over Sabrina Smedley.

Stay with me, this is where things are about to circle back to Mark Pulliam’s battle with the Tennessee GOP State Executive Committee, and their bias toward liberals.

Ms. Smedley appealed to the State Executive Committee to overturn Wamp’s victory, citing "illegal Democratic crossover voting." She also accused Democrats of "party raiding in our election" at the behest of the Wamp campaign. The Executive Committee rejected her appeal, and certified Wamp as the winner.

At the time I thought that Wamp’s election was regrettable and dishonest, but that it was still legitimate. Wamp was able to get left-wing Democrats to vote in the Republican primary, successfully gaming the system which allows crossover voting. He won his stealth victory due to the state Republican Party not closing the primary. As preferable as it would have been for Smedley to become mayor, I thought it would have been inappropriate and a bit of a stretch for the Executive Committee to overturn Wamp’s victory.

But then I read about Pulliam’s battle, and how that same Executive Committee had no trouble overturning his election.

In this “Misrule” article, Pulliam discusses the extraordinary actions of the state GOP in stripping him of his victory.

Why are the apparatchiks in charge of the Tennessee Republican Party (TRP) so opposed to my election? The stated grounds for objecting to my write-in win to a seat on the SEC [State Executive Committee] —something that apparently has never previously occurred – is that I am not a “bona fide” Republican, as defined by the TRP bylaws. People who know me may be surprised by that claim. I am a lifelong Republican. I have voted in every election since 1976, and have never voted for a Democrat in a contested partisan election. I have been active in GOP politics my entire adult life, in Texas, California, and Tennessee. I have walked precincts, watched polls, attended state conventions, held county party offices, volunteered at GOP headquarters, donated to candidates, attended fundraisers, manned phone banks, and been active in many grassroots organizations. I personify the committed GOP activist. If I am not “bona fide,” no one is.

What, then, is the basis for overturning my election? As I smacked down each spurious charge, others popped up, in Whac-A-Mole fashion. In only the most casual manner, I learned that other “objections” to my election were being raised—by whom, I was never told. My alleged “sins”? I failed to pay a $100 “registration fee” to the TRP for GOP candidates whose name will appear on the Republican primary ballot. As a write-in candidate, my name was not on the GOP primary ballot (hence the term “write-in”, and in a June 15 telephone conversation the TRP’s Political Director confirmed that no fee was due in the case of a write-in. The TRP then changed positions and—weeks after the election–TRP Chairman Scott Golden claimed that I was delinquent in paying the $100. I promptly paid the $100. Too late, the TRP exclaimed! The election would be overturned…

If the state GOP could overturn Pulliam’s primary election on the preposterous grounds that he is not a “lifelong Republican,” then they could certainly overturn Wamp’s primary victory, considering that Wamp had been badmouthing Republicans to the national press, and because he only captured his 35% plurality because of Democrats voting in a Republican primary.

There are other deep red states (Texas, Utah, and probably many others) in which much of the Republican leadership is clearly hostile to the agenda of the party’s conservative base. It’s not enough to beat the Democrats in general elections if Republican party leadership wants Democrats to win in GOP primary elections. We’ve still got a lot of work to do here in solid-red states to keep liberals out of power.

If you’d like to read more about Mark Pulliam’s battle against the Tennessee Republican Party, here is his most recent opinion piece.

1 Rich Baris has realeased his poll of Arizona. Polling all conducted before last night's debate.

Kelly and Masters are effectively tied (45.6 to 45.2), with about 7% undecided.

Pretty much incoveivable that the undecideds will break for Kelly now, especially after Masters won the debate.

Looks like Masters will win this by 2 or 3.

Typical. Good 'ole boyism is a problem wherever you have utterly dominant machinery. Where I grew up in CO was a deep red county and the Republican machinery was hopelessly corrupt. We once had a candidate running for the county commission and she ran as a Democrat to bypass that machinery. Her platform was *incredibly* conservative but she could not get into the local Republican machine as an outsider. She is probably the most conservative "Democrat" who has ever appeared on a ballot anywhere in the country.

Shenanigans like you've described would, in another time, result in somebody winding up face-down in a ditch only to be discovered some days or weeks later. Tennessee has a history of this, too, and the "Battle of Athens" is a prime example. Corrupt machinery is a serious problem in any area with significant margins.

Listen to the 2nd clip, in which a "reporter" asks him if Biden won the election. It's obviously a gotcha question, but he handled it beautifully. I'm sure he knows that Biden and the Dems stole the election, but he acknowledges that Biden is the president (which wasn't really the question), then sticks the knife in.

27 Never underestimate the power of the Gospel of Christ to change a person. And remember the effectual fervent prayers of those in the will of God ARE answered. Christians are just sinners saved by God who most always change their lives to reflect their love and gratitude for that salvation.

And while you're there, mentally, remember King Herod, the guy whose soldiers--on his command--slaughtered the children of Bethlehem, died of gangrene in his "tender vittles", as one might say. In the book I, Claudius, Herod succumbed to a disease that had symptoms described as “putrescent stomach, corpse-like breath, maggots breeding in the privy member, and a constant watery flow from the bowels causing inflamed madness.”

Make sure you know which side you're on.

You may now return to your normal reading.

30 Excellent post, Buck. Specifics, facts, an actual real story that illustrates a much bigger point.

Or a few.

One of which is sort of the one I harp on endlessly. The nation is crippled, if not doomed, by an unserious and distracted or lazy electorate, which combined with a mostly dead two-party system*, leaves it vulnerable to exactly what you describe. The final piece of the toxic puzzle is the lack of any real press in most of the country any more.

* the two-party "system" is technically just a de facto situation, not a system, but inertia makes it effectively a stranglehold on actual elective politics in most cases

Posted by: rhomboid at October 07, 2022 11:12 AM (OTzUX)

31 the only answer is for a strong conservative or even just plain anti-Left candidate to emerge as a third option.

Locally, there was a zoning/development issue and the GOP commissioner was on the side of the developer and against the neighbors. So one of the neighbors ran for commissioner, as an Independent, even though he was GOP, and he won.

So now chicanery from the GOP political embeds could touch him. He did not run for office under their banner.

95 Corruption in politics has a long storied history. Robert Heinlein wrote a book summarizing his experiences dealing with machine politics (Take Back Your Government) and a helpful primer on doing that.

Corruption occurs because a) there is money involved and b) power. Both of those can get you sex as well. So same old, same old.

But, there is a counter--form your own party clubs and use those to dominate politics in your area. Be ruthless in expelling those attempting to use the party club for its own means by using the caucus method as described in Heinlein's book. Work and give money to the incorruptible candidates on your ballot, especially in primaries.

The machines have the money, the slick ads, etc. but if given a choice, a substantial number of voters will reject those machine politics and their corrupt politicians outside of urban areas where often massive fraud is involved.

Regular looking white women in an ad, gossiping politics and saying the RINO thinks they are too stupid to remember his record... this is a good tack to take to try and get the white suburban wine moms. I hope other conservative PACS take note.

97 Buck has hit the nail on the head.
1. Chamber Pot Republicans rule because they control the primary. You must show up at the meeting usually held after the polls are closed where they elect and vote on issues - That's where the influence is.
_- Rand Paul has written excellent pieces on what and how to take back the primary.

2. Turn out the vote. Wherever you live go back to any election and check out the number of votes v the number of possible voters. It. Will. Shock. You.
Turn out the vote is essential.

Thanks Buck

Even Trump, the incredible outsider and black swan of American politics, punted on the issue when it arose (Paris Accord withdrawal, rationale for). His EPA was just starting to address some of the foundations of the idiocy when the virus catastrophe happened, and then an invisible opponent with no campaign managed to produce voting patterns never before seen in our history and take the WH.

The "leadership" here for at least one of our counties actually IGNORED the election results and literally called any anti-establishment Republicans "lepers." shorturl.at/hprtU

It's from March. I have heard that Russian Generals are standing firm on the 2020 nuclear doctrine, despite the authority of Putin to give the command to launch.

Under the doctrine, the justification for launch is:

-- the use of nuclear weapons or weapons of mass destruction against Russia or its allies;
-- data showing the launch of ballistic missiles aimed at Russia or its allies;
-- an attack on critical government or military sites that would undermine the country's nuclear forces response actions;
-- the use of conventional weapons against Russia "when the very existence of the state is in jeopardy"

The problem being we aren't fighting at all. We are trying, but we don't have any representation. We tried in 2016 and the (R)s rebelled against us and investigated Trump for two years before outright quitting their posts so he couldn't help the country, and then we - the entire country - tried again with a resounding landslide victory for Trump in 2020, and the Republicans said "No, we're not going to do anything to help you, sorry."

Oh, I'm involved at church and at the local level, and write my state and local (and fed, but it's meaningless for NC) representatives. I think the 10th Amendment will have to be the way forward, and the sanctuary cities / marijuana states showed us the way. My point being that the feds are so disconnected that nothing that benefits the citizens matters. The energy and EV craziness is a great example.

They have a plan and they intend to enact it, and it doesn't matter what you or I want or need. We had world peace and the best economy in decades two years ago, and now that dollar is worth 50c (at best) and we're having serious conversations about nuclear war preparations.

This is a plan. This is intentional.

Good information on TN GOP here, Buck - and it highlights my point about the unreformable nature of the GOP. The entire Party is a filter funnel designed to keep any conservative from rising above the *very* local level.

People think "if only can get McConnel and McCarthy and his weird Bosom Buddy Luntz out of the way, then we can clean up this Party!" No.

The entire DC Party has made it through that filter funnel - 99% of them would be exactly the same in McConnell or McCarthy's chairs. They may appear different given their district or State, but in leadership, any would know their proper role, and expectations.

Sordid little affairs like the ones Buck's laid out here illustrate how that filter funnel works at the State GOP level to thwart the base at every turn, even in their own backyards, and even when they are in strong-conservative, blood red areas like the one where I grew up in Colorado.

To ever make a meaningful reform in that joke Party, you'd have to gut it completely, strip it back to the timbers, and then burn those. People who say "the Party is changing" or "it's Trump's Party now" are completely ignoring the mechanics of this Party.

Better than that - another person suggested that Shoigu should share the fate of General Pavlov, who was executed by firing squad in 1941 for failing to adequately defend the USSR against the Germans.

There's a lot of resentment of Shoigu, who isn't a military guy - his background was construction, running the Russian equivalent of FEMA (which is a much bigger organization in Russia), and complete subservience to Putin.

If there is a big enough battery bank, then the more dense in power you make it, the greater risk that something bad happens when the battery goes bad. Ironically, hydro installs are about as good as batteries for massive power storage at the utility level. You pump water during the day up a slope, then let it out at night driving turbines to generate hydro electricity. Carter Lake in GA for Georgia Power and Light is one such install and there are a few others around left.

[Had a 2006 Prius that got 465,000 miles before a monthly Walmart oil change (where I stupidly let them put in some additive and I'm convinced they didn't put in any oil as the engine quickly seized the next day). Moral of the story: I always check my oil now immediately after an "oil change" -- especially from Walmart.]

271 Ironically, hydro installs are about as good as batteries for massive power storage at the utility level. You pump water during the day up a slope, then let it out at night driving turbines to generate hydro electricity. Carter Lake in GA for Georgia Power and Light is one such install and there are a few others around left.

280 TJM and Lady in Black,

SC has a history of excluding outsiders and supporting thoroughly corrupt politicians throughout its history. The state did not even have a state Bill of Rights until after the Civil War. Through a lot of its history, the competition was between the relatively poor uplands and the planter class along the coasts. The Repubs used the upland resentments to eventually beat the Dem planter class in statewide races and then promptly created its own ruling class impervious to reform. Carroll Campbell was instrumental in doing that and by moving the SC primary up, SC became very important to national Republican aspirations. As such, the state GOP is doubly reinforced by the GOP national orgs to prevent any populism from rising up.

Posted by: whig at October 07, 2022 12:09 PM (CXr4y)

281
Notice how all these people in red states/areas are saying 'oh my local GOP is useless, and we just can't seem to change it?'

It's not useless. It's extraordinarily useful - it's purpose is to make it so you can't change it, but keep voting for it anyway.

Anytime you're tempted to point at a Dem rotten borough and say things like "plantation voters," remember the three fingers pointing back at you.

Don't think you could manage that because gas, etc. are so dense in energy that batteries may never be able to match up. You would have to go nuclear electric for that like on space probes. There is a reason NASA went to fuel cells instead of batteries in spacecraft.

Depends, if you are using solar energy, you do the reverse which was the partial answer to the above question on batteries. Carter Lake is used for ordinary grid operations and so it varies by season--pumping daytime during the winter and night time during the summer.

On wind, it is often the greatest at the shift to day to night or night to day so your pumped storage would vary also depending on seasons.

292 51. In PA the state GOP is just ridiculous.

Yeah, and WE LET THEM BE. Case in point: Kathy Barrette. "Oh, she didn't do well against Madeleine Dean so lets not waste our time!" was the cry. So who is MD, or better yet, what's her background? Husband an active businessman who was formerly president and CEO of Advanced Sports, Inc. (Related articles ran in The Inquirer. "Update: Taiwan investigates $20M transfer to Philly firm run by Congresswoman-elect's husband.") A son worked directly for 6 years for President O as Senior Writer & Deputy Director of Messaging. Does that make Dean a terrible person? No, but she's about as well connected to that party as you can be in PA, and our pols aren't about to spend the $ to counter anyone with that oomph. Another example, until VERY recently I had no idea there's a republican running against Congresswoman Mary Gay Scalon, PA 5th District (yes, mine & I will vote for a rock rather than her because what she did with BLM in this district & her misdirection of issues that do need to be honestly addressed.) She was with a large law firm known for excellence; hubby is the managing partner. Lada!

The medical industry LIKES Obamacare as do big employers as it takes the pressure off of them regarding costs and coverage. IF you note, most physicians are no longer self employed but work for a hospital system because Obamacare reimbursed hospitals at a higher rate than physician owned establishments.

The Brits still hold fast to their thoroughly problematic NHS system because they view it as better than nothing. The well off go to the doctors during their off time in the evenings at private clinics and private hospitals or go abroad. So, there is no pressure on the system to change.

298 I'm personally working now to wreck the Republican Party on every level - local, state, federal - and watch that party nosedive into the ground. One of the greatest electoral wins for a presidential candidate in history was stolen through every illegal and questionably legal method that could be employed and the ONLY way it could have worked was for Republicans to have
(a) been an active player in the scheme
(b) sat on the sidelines and done nothing to stop it
(c) both of the above
The G.O.P. deserves to die as a political party. At least I can get the pleasure of watching them burn as I mourn the destruction of our nation. FUCK REPUBLICANS AND THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE!

And another thing, they don't even make a decent stand against some of the most terrible, do nothing State Senators & local reps. Why not run someone decent against them?

How can we do that when she advocates for veterans? What are you talking about, her husband getting disability? That's the only veteran she's ever been near and/or advocated for! (NOTE: And in reality, little is ever done for younger veterans by any party because they can be a threat to most state and federal civil service positions.)

What about running someone decent against that one? But he/she collects food for pantries and distributes it along with union reps. What? Only right before voting will be taking place & each and every food box was packaged and labelled USDA. Who's her uncle?

He/she worked for the feds in the past. Oh, a Program Manager he was? Meaningless. He could have been managing paper clips and the office's copy machine for all you know.

300 Closed primaries would help, but in strongly one-party areas perhaps their adoption would be of limited effect.

However, one thing prospective "raiders" need to know is that if they vote in the other party's primary to fix the election for a particular office, the have to stay in that primary for all the other offices contested, so they forgo the right to vote in their own party's primary for such contests, some of which may be quite competitive.

Posted by: go get your fuckin shine box at October 07, 2022 02:18 PM (WusEB)

Are your measures objective? What constitutes "bad-mouthing Republicans"?

I thought you were making my point, that voting in for a Republican in a race without judging them is a problem. The reactionary is going to claim that "you want to vote for a Dem, traitor!"

Leaving the ballot blank if you don't know is the moral action. Voting for someone just based on Party is a lie when you give power over others to someone you don't know and haven't bothered to vet in any way.
