The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"I’m happy that he’s going to be going home to his family. And that even if you’re not moved by, again, the morality of having these folks go back home, despite serving sentences that were in excess to what the crime was, from a financial burden, that’s no longer on the state, the taxpayers." PA Lt. Gov. John Fetterman

Quote II

“And ultimately this is also a tremendous opportunity. It’s a tremendous opportunity to once and for all remove the dependence on Russian energy and thus to take away from Vladimir Putin the weaponization of energy as a means of advancing his imperial designs. That’s very significant and that offers tremendous strategic opportunity for the years to come.” U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken

Yes, all of that ready to use "green energy" will keep Europe warm.

Quote III

“Here we go again! Another Fake book is out, this one, supposedly very boring and stale, by self appointed head case, Failing (unfunded liability!) New York Times writer, Maggie Haberman. In it she tells many made up stories, with zero fact checking or confirmation by anyone who would know, like me,” President Donald Trump

Quote IV

"I'm hoping they didn't find anybody, but by and large, you'd rather not know." Hurricane Ian survivor David Dean

Quote V

“Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Dusting off the cobwebs and gaining new skills. Thanks to The Tactical Games for an incredible day of training,” Former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard

One thing I dislike about my Apple products a different charger than other products. The EU says that will change there.

mall electronic devices sold in the EU will be required to use the same charging cable by 2024 under a new law that will force Apple to change the charger on the iPhone.

Tech firms will be required to move to the USB-C under the new regulation, which is extended to laptops from 2026.

Most phone and tablet manufacturers have already switched to that new standard. Apple has already switched its MacBook and iPad to USB-C but has stuck with its own Lightning cable for the iPhone.

Other rumours have suggested that Apple may instead be looking to get rid of the charging plug entirely, and instead focus solely on wireless charging. The EU has said that it will be introducing new requirements for wireless charging by the end of 2024.

Talk about over active imaginations, is that gunfire? Nope, just popcorn popping.

Jersey City’s Newport Centre Mall was the center of a social media storm over the weekend as online posters alleged a possible active shooter situation, but it turned out to be just a malfunctioning popcorn machine.

Around 3:30 on Saturday, Oct 1, the first of nine calls were made to the Jersey City Police Department about a possible active shooter situation at the three-level mall near the Downtown area.

The Handyman's secret weapon, Duct Tape. Not sure it was meant for airliners.

Duct tape on a plane initially thought to be holding its wing together has been revealed as having a far less questionable purpose.

The tape made for an alarming sight what was thought to be a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for Australian opera singer David Wakeham who last week shared a photo to Twitter, where it later went viral.

“When choosing your favourite airline, choose wisely. Profits before safety,” his post, which was also shared to Reddit, read.

While at the time it was joked the tape was used for “temporary repairs”, it has since been identified as commonly used “speed tape”, which was most likely used to cover peeling paint, according to CheckMate, a weekly fact checking newsletter from RMIT and ABC

Just another Ivy League professor who should be nowhere near young adults, hell any adults.

A top Ivy League professor has warned her colleagues at the World Economic Forum (WEF) that free speech is “leading to harm” because it is currently “legal.”

Claire Wardle, a Brown University professor and member of the WEF, expressed her frustration that the First Amendment allows people to legally speak freely, even if they express views that conflict with the official narrative.

She argued during a World Economic Forum panel discussion that the lack of limitations on free speech is to blame for “misinformation” spreading online because it is not illegal.

Wardle suggested that it may be necessary to change free speech laws to prevent “low-level” or “hateful” information from being repeated.

One would think life long bureaucrats, fat cat union members and members of the rank and file of NYC's Public Works Department could have come up with a plan, for less than $4 Million.

The city has hired the controversial consulting firm McKinsey & Company to study its waste containerization needs and design a citywide pilot program, Streetsblog has learned.

For the next 20 weeks, the global management consulting firm will assess streets across the city with an eye toward what could work in a large, diverse urban environment and identify models for a such as program from among the many different solutions around the world — working with the Sanitation Department to figure out the kinds of containers it needs, find appropriate vendors, and structure costs.

New York is decades behind other world capitals in terms of waste collection and containerization, so there are many models from which to choose. (Barcelona and other cities have underground trash bins that are lifted out for collection.)

Multiple winners in this game. Don't ever leave your keys in a luxury car. Because you know what can happen. Genius Award Winners.

A teen in Florida is dead and another is in critical condition after they found and allegedly stole a Maserati sports car.

A group of three teens in Pinellas County, Florida, allegedly broke into a Maserati on Sunday and found the keys had been left inside. They then proceeded to take the car, but eventually crashed the vehicle. One teen died in the accident and another is in critical condition, police said.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri held a press conference near the scene of the crash. He identified the boys as Keondrick Lang, 15, Mario Bonilla, 15, and Malachi Daniels, 16. According to the sheriff, the boys were wandering through the neighbourhood checking door handles to see if they could enter any of the parked vehicles in the area when they found that the Maserati's door was unlocked.

A very special day and Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Sam Moorfoot is 29 years old and has Down Syndrome. He is the head water boy for the Geelong Football Club from Victoria, Australia -- also known as the Cats.

Last weekend, Geelong defeated the Sydney Swans to win the cup in the AFL Grand Final (similar to the Super Bowl in the US).

After the game, the Cats' captain Joel Selwood spotted Moorfoot in the stands and invited him onto the field at Melbourne Criket Ground (MCG) to take part in the lap of honor.

"I'm very proud of my boys to win a premiership," Moorfoot told AAP. "Joel said he wanted to get me on the ground. That was the moment of my life, what an honor."

One of our regulars passed this along, so I thought I would share.

Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Rutherford Birchard Hayes, 19th President of the United States (1822 - 1893). He caught more bullets than any other future U.S. President as a Civil War general. While he became president as part of a corrupt bargain in 1877 (partly due to Democrats' suppression of balck votes that made the election controversial) and had to end Reconstruction, he still pushed hard for civil rights, education reform, and civil service reform. In his personal life, he contributed to increasing education among poor blacks in the South. While he is not known for being as effective as many other presidents, he still stood up against corrupt political machines the best he could.

Anyway, you can look him up!

On this day.

57 Steadily working on building the new 1/48 Eduard F4F-3 Wildcat. So far lost one piece of PE, luckily it is very small and easy to hide the fact it vanished. Engine is together. Wings glued. Cockpit is coming together.

While doing this I have been looking over Hong Kong Models yet to be released 1/48 B-25J Mitchell kit. Pre-order price from them is $99. One of the marking options is for 'Cactus Kitten' of the 501st BS/345th BG at Tacloban. If that is ringing any bells as in 'I've seen those markings before,' well you would be correct as they have already appeared in the Monogram Pro-Modeller release of their B-25J kit in 1/48.

Looking at the 3D CAD drawings the kit does look impressive. Going to get full R-2600 engines, a bomb load, lots of details in the bombardier's compartment. But very little in the way of details in the waist area like the ammo boxes are missing. One little thing they got right that I've never noticed before is the two bullet deflectors for the top turret.

Still may pull the trigger and get this kit though I already have 2 B-25Bs and 2 B-25C/Ds from Accurate Miniatures plus from Monogram 1 B-25H and 2 B-25Js

69 U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken

Apparently the MSM has censored any discussion of the United States being the possible culprit in the pipeline sabotage.

This led to hilarity on CNN, when Columbia University economics professor Jeffery Sachs stated that there were US military helicopters in the vicinity when the sabotage occurred (first I've heard of that), and the obvious fact that when both Joe Biden and Victoria Nuland said that the pipeline would be shut down, and with Anthony Blinken spiking the football after the sabotage occurred, it was obvious that the United States should be viewed as a prime suspect.

The CNN interviewer was simply incredulous that anyone could believe such a thing.

102 With respect to the Apple charger thing... They use the "lightning" port, which they invented. And they invented it because the other option was USB2... and lightning is a vastly superior option than that.

Now we have USB-c. The physical connector of Lightning is still superior, but the speeds are far behind now.

That said, when lightning was introduced, Steve Jobs said "we have our connector for the next ten years." He said that about ten years ago... So likely time for a change.

Still: they didn't hop from one connector or protocol to another, whiplashing their customers. So there's that.

138 I'm waiting on some hardware at work and wasted some time this afternoon reading about the Peloponnesian War and post-Alexander civil war on the internet this afternoon. Two points come to mind:

1. It really is quite striking the discrepancy between the "philosophers eating figs and being excellent to each other" utopian mythology of Precious Athenian Democracy that tends to get taught in public schools and the "fuck you pay me" grimdark reality of their imperial machine. Aside from interesting moral implications, it goes a long way in explaining how and why they lost the allied-support game in a war of coalitions.

2. A couple of months ago some sanctimonious cockwomble with a presstitute badge and an infatuation with worthlessness was QQing about how Heels Up takes flak for "ambition" but Manly Man does not. It occurs to me that this war is an exemplar of the perils of unchecked ambition. So much pointless devastation, in the end all they did was get themselves killed and their hero's empire torn apart.

155 Maybe it's the Germans. All this pipeline etc is not hurting Russia. The main and almost only people hurt by this is Germany.
Is there a secret plot to blow up (figuratively) the EU?
Posted by: Braenyard, _ want nuremberg trials? badger your congressman at October 04, 2022 10:12 PM (ZQR/T)

As far as I can tell, Germany was contractually obligated to pay for Russian natural gas whether or not it was received. The fact that Germany embargoed it and was making it impossible to pay for it due to the banking embargo didn't change anything, and the fact that the line was shut down due to maintenance problems is put right into Germany's lap.

Blowing the pipeline, no matter who did it, was the only way out. Now they can claim force majeure

164 Now we have USB-c. The physical connector of Lightning is still superior, but the speeds are far behind now.

Yeah, mandating a specific connector type sounds a lot like a corporate giveaway, though I don’t know to whom when it comes to USB-C.

Also, most of the terminology on the reporting of this seems to be very wrong. The charger is the same. It’s only the cable between the charger and the device that is different.

I have standard USB chargers from Leviton in several of my wall outlets. They work with any Apple products so far. Anyone with an Apple product just needs the right cable, which is USB Type A to go into the wall (the standard USB that requires a specific orientation) and whatever their Apple device requires on the other end.

This is the same cable that is used with almost all Apple chargers—most of their chargers also output power via USB Type A. Their chargers that don’t output via USB Type A output via USB Type C. It’s all USB on the charger end.

The LNG cannot explode. There are things called Upper Explosive Limit, and Lower Explosive Limit, those being the ratios of the gas in question to air. Combustible gases cannot explode if their concentration is below the LEL, or above the UEL.

A tanker full of LNG might burn like a huge torch at the interface between the vaporizing methane and the atmosphere, but it won't explode.

I don't know the routine. But even "mostly empty", the tanks are filled with a little liquid methane, and methane gas above the liquid. No oxygen there to support combustion. Now, completely empty, air could flow in, displace the lighter methane, and maybe form an explosive mixture with the dregs. I presume they take measures to prevent that. Like closing the valves.

With cryogenic liquids, another explosion hazard is not combustion, but critical pressure/temperature.

For example, critical temperature of methane is about -116F-ish, and critical pressure is about 667 psi.

Let the temperature of a cryo liquid get about critical, and the pressure will rise astronomically. Get fire involved with a closed vessel, and BOOM!

Just looking -- this means that a lot of high pressure natural gas pipelines operate at above critical pressure. Nord Stream, from what I saw, before we blew it up, was pressurized to around 700 psi, maybe more, from what I was reading.

A substance above critical temp and pressure is dubbed a "supercritical fluid". They can have very weird properties. For example, supercritical water is a very good solvent of oil!

Oil readily dissolved in supercritical water.

379 They should conduct destructive experiments on LNG carriers, mid ocean, for measurement purposes. Enough "guessing" get hard data.

Steam clean the ship's bunker fuel tanks, purge all the engines and auxiliary plants of fuels and lubricants. In other words, just measure the force and flame-front characteristics of the LNG propagation, under observed and measurable circucmstances.

Three to five ships worth ought to do it. Ranging from straight up "liquified", to intermediate states, to full on "maximum gaseous release". Measure it like nukes.

Stop guessing. Start KNOWING.

Well, if an LNG tanker got struck by a torpedo or missile while at sea, I expect the ship and its crew would be dead ducks. To get all, or a large part, of the LNG to explode like a fuel-air explosive, you would have to disperse it somewhat evenly through a huge volume of air, without the initial explosion igniting it to burn on the air/gas interface.

Putin is not so much the problem here, as Washington. As Tucker mentioned the other night, there was a peace deal *this close* to be signed between Putin and Zelensky. Terms were Ukraine doesn't join NATO, puts that in writing, Crimea belongs to Russia. Ukraine stops messing the Donbas areas. Russia pulls out.

This was being brokered through Turkey, and Putin and Zelensky were about to go there and sign this thing.

Washington vetoed it.

391 Not the 1st time I have run into this push-back....Hhmmm...is there more to this then?

Zelensky is a US deep state puppet. Kiev has been effectively at war with the Donbas and related areas since the CIA run coup in 2014, because oddly enough, people frequently don't accept a change away from the government they consistently voted for just because some rent a mob wanted it. Thus no one is fighting against Russia and for anyone's freedom. They're fighting to reestablish Kiev's territorial claims, which will be followed up by ethnic cleansing of the Russians who live there. Preventing that in the first place was high on Putin's list of motivations to invade.

459 I worked on the hydrogen leaks on the Space Shuttles in 1990. NASA was trying to figure out ways of just "living with it" instead of fixing it. They were defective when they were installed, "somehow".

460 I have been following a twitter poster who seems to have a pretty good information about what is happening in Ukraine. I couldn't plan an invasion of a water park so what follows is what I took away from this poster.

It appears that the Uks are having success pushing down the western shore of Dnipro River towards Nova Kakhovka and south from Snihurivka which leads directly to another critical junction and then onto Kherson.

If this pressure keeps up the Russians will lose both bridges across the Dnipro River which would cut off a Russian retreat out of Kherson. If this plays out in the Uks favor they will control that whole region and would then put the Donbas in pincher. Sucks to be a Russian soldier right now it seems.

491 Debby I am no doctor, I asked a lot of questions and read as much as I could. I know that bloating and swelling is definitely normal after the operation. How long it lasts, how much you could have, I don't know. I have to imagine it varies for everyone. I know that even after many months I am not exactly the same shape I was a year ago.

I had the robot surgery with the mesh, not sure what you had. When you think about what they do to you (and I don't like to think about that), you can understand that it will take a while to fully recover from that sort of thing. I don't think about the operation any more now, except the other day I was in the garage doing some woodworking stuff and I was bending over a lot and feeling a tightness. It took me a while and I thought - hey moron don't be stupid here. I was good in holding off all the activities they said not to do, but I don't want to go back for a repair.

So you see the doctor on Tuesday, that's good. I guess this is like two weeks after your operation? Ask EVERY question you can think of, you are your own best advocate. I know you know this, but I wish you well and hope you make it to Texas so I can say hi in person!

493 Debby re-reading what you wrote, and not knowing how things were before surgery and after - if you are in any discomfort, or if anything looks unusual, by all means call your surgeon. The people who worked with me were great, I called them many times with questions. So please don't rely just on what I said because I'm only some dope with a keyboard here.

494 7 But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled; for such things must happen, but the end is not yet.

503 That Sam's Club story doesn't add up.

Wouldn't the guy have had to pay for the work done on the car to get the keys?

504 When Apple gets beat up about their charger, I just think back to before the iPhone. Every new phone used to have a different charger and every time you had an upgrade, you had to spend an extra $40 or more for a car charger. Remember those adapters with 10-15 different connectors?

iPhone was the first to not continually change the charging port and got crapped on the one time the did.
