The Morning Report — 10/3/22

hillnudgeillegal.jpg

Good morning kids. Start of a new week and my hopes and prayers for Florida sadly came to naught as the death toll in the wake of Hurricane Ian now stands at 76 confirmed dead as of this morning. I pray that it doesn't rise, but given the magnitude of devastation, I fear that it undoubtedly will. Governor DeSantis and his team, as well as all the first responders, linemen and other emergency workers are doing everything humanly possible to restore essential services so that the citizenry can begin the process of digging out, cleaning up and ultimately rebuilding. In a sane, rational society, this would be the response at every level of government all the way up to the highest office in the land. But, as we all know too well, that is not America in the year 2022.

So absolute is the divide, and so bereft of morals and decency and in point of fact so heartless are those in power in DC, that they are cheering the carnage of a natural disaster insofar as it can ding their chief political rival and nemesis as well as punish those who oppose them. Even if it means the death of innocent people. That's not hyperbole; that's fact. Because in their warped souls, anyone who opposes them in the slightest is not innocent. The eliminationist rhetoric that has been shrieked at us 24/7 for years now, up to and including the hollowed out husk of a venal pervert who proclaimed at least half this nation "a clear and present danger" has resulted in innocent lives being snuffed out by guns, cars and Molotov cocktails. At least one was at the behest of the government itself. Ashli Babbit shot to death by Capitol cop Michael Byrd and Roseanne Boyland tortured and beaten to death by government-sanctioned goons. But I digress.

Recall in the wake of Hurricane Katrina 17 years ago now, how the Left shrieked at Dubya for allegedly doing nothing to help New Orleans because, in the puerile, racialist ravings of criminal mayor Ray Nagin, his town was a "chocolate city." Worse, the homunculus black hole of racialist hatred Spike Lee spewed the most inflammatory crackpot conspiracy bromide that the Army Corps of Engineers, at the behest of Bush, actually blew up the levees as a genocidal act of ethnic cleansing to cause them to flee the city, and "de-chocolatize" it, if not kill outright as many blacks as possible. Naturally, the fact that for years, Democrat politicians absconded and/or mismanaged the money to maintain and strengthen the levees and in the crucial days before Katrina hit, Nagin and Louisiana governor Kathleen Blanco rebuffed the Bush administration's aid and assistance as well as FEMA's urging them to order an evacuation. Oh well, "cannibalism in the Superdome" and Ray Nagin huffing on a crackpipe in a high rise hotel before bugging out while the Big Easy gets wiped out is the price we have to pay to maintain the meme that America is racist to its core.

And now, in the wake of Ian, where it seems that Ron DeSantis who has done almost everything right, the fury of Mother Nature notwithstanding, is to be taken out by projecting everything the Democrats have done wrong, and spectacularly so, onto him. But, of course, it's not working. Ian was as DeSantis stated "a once-in-500-year event" and all things considered, he seems to be the right man in the right place at the right time to get Florida back on its feet.

So, what's the Left to do? One guess.

Four years ago, Ron DeSantis was running for governor in Florida against a socialist drug addict under indictment for corruption, who happened to be black. Instead of asking their candidate to step aside so that they could run a more suitable individual to be the chief executive of one of America’s largest states, the Democrats stayed with their man and placed their hopes on smearing DeSantis as a “racist.” Their evidence? In a speech on the economy he said, “The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state.” There was nothing remotely racist about this statement. However, the Florida NAACP responded by saying comparison of blacks to monkeys – a comparison DeSantis did not make – was “by far the best-known racist reference to African Americans in our national folklore.”

DeSantis was being hung for a perfectly innocent and apt statement that only a party as morally defective as the Florida Democrats could construe in the way they did. This was soon accompanied by a second charge involving me. DeSantis had spoken four times at an event I hosted annually which had featured mainstream conservatives, including three US Attorneys General, and senators John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Mitch McConnell, Huffington Post reported it under a screaming headline: “DeSantis Gave Four Paid Speeches for Infamous Racist.” That would be me.

Now, four years later, as a very successful Governor DeSantis positions himself for a presidential run, The New York Times’ columnist, Charles Blow has re-opened the charge, saying DeSantis has a significant race problem, holding me up as a case in point: “In a 2018 gubernatorial debate, the moderator asked DeSantis why he had spoken at several conferences hosted by David Horowitz, a conservative writer who the Southern Poverty Law Center says is a ‘driving force of the anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant and anti-Black movements.’” In the four years between these attacks, I have refuted these easily disproven lies of the SPLC, numerous times on the Internet, and in my recent book, aptly titled, The Enemy Within: How A Totalitarian Movement Is Destroying America . . .

. . . The entire aim of the malicious distortions of statements and facts, indeed the whole tenor of the Democrat attacks was that Republicans were racists, unfit to be taken seriously, and that the country would be better off if there were only one party – a party dedicated to the “socially just” future as seen through the eyes of leftwing zealots. Just before the gubernatorial election, which DeSantis won by a hair, Axios published the results of a poll showing that a majority of Democrats – 61% – regarded Republicans as “racists,” “sexists” and “bigots.”

This was entirely predictable for a party which has come to rely on name-calling and hate rather than reason and persuasion, and whose leaders characterize their opponents en masse as “deplorables” and “irredeemables” and “white supremacists.” A party that relies on moral indictments to advance its political agendas, and which elevates tribal groups over the individuals who compose them is a totalitarian party in the making. A party that proposes to “save the planet” or establish a society where “social justice” reigns, is a party that demands intolerance from its adherents, and will regard democratic compromise with an imperfect world as a betrayal of its high-minded cause.

In terms of shifting perceptions electorally and politically, it's not going to work. In fact, just the opposite has happened and continues in the wake of the Trump economic miracle of his first term and its cataclysmic reversal at the hands of Sponge-Brain Shits-Pants' handlers these past 20 months. More minorities, including the jewel in the crown of the Democrat party, American blacks, are not just taking a chance on non-Democrat candidates but abandoning the plantation in growing numbers.

And speaking of "deplorables" per David Horowitz's piece, the confirmation that the racialism schtick isn't going to fly (though doubtless it is a standard and the audience won't go home unless the band plays it) look who's suddenly appeared to run, not on racism, but on open borders:

Hillary Clinton is “dusting off” her husband’s playbook by criticizing the Biden administration’s “open borders” to put herself in place to mount a 2024 presidential run, veteran political consultant Dick Morris said in a new interview.

Morris, a former aide to President Bill Clinton, said Hillary is setting herself up to enter the race as a “moderate” choice for Democrats in two years for what would be her third shot at the White House. . .

. . . “These are all signals that she is going to be the moderate candidate for president. She’s going to say after the election, ‘See, the left cost us the House and the Senate. If we stay with a left-wing candidate in 2024, we’re going to lose the White House. I’m the only one who will tack to the center and give us a chance at victory , ’ ” Morris said.

Morris said he’s aware of the strategy she’s employing “because it’s the strategy I designed for Bill Clinton in 1992” when he won the Democratic nomination. “ Hillary is just dusting off Bill‘s playbook that I wrote for him and applying it herself this year,” he said. . .

. . . “Once Biden pulls out, the polling will show that the Democrats are leaning toward some crazy radical like Gavin Newson, Bernie Sanders. Maybe even AOC herself,” Morris said, referring to progressive lightning rod Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“That’s going to drive the Democratic Party leaders to go to Hillary and say, ‘Hey look. Please run again. We need you to save us from the crazy left,” Morris said.

And guess which Democrat bloc absolutely hates open borders and illegal aliens. Hint: it starts with B-L and ends in A-C-K-S. If whackos like that Charlamagne Tha G-d can see through what the Democrats are doing, QED.

What Morris neglects to say, as if it's not obvious to anyone with at least twice the brain cells of Biden, is this is all an act. She's as radically open borders as anyone. And with a supine and willing GOP-e to help, we will have open borders if she steals 2024. Hillary is not the "crazy left" because she fakes being centrist. Sanders and company have no need for pretense. The cat is out of the bag, as it were. Triangulation and all that crap has gone the way of the dodo.

Hillary and Bill, and indeed every other Democrat like them are on the path to extinction. If they think they can bamboozle so called "independents" they're delusional. As I stated up top, we have become irreconcilably polarized. And with the economy and society headed for collapse, the days of the Clintons and Bushes are over.

9 Saint of the Day
St. Theodore Guerin (1798--1856), was born in Etables, France, towards the end of the French Revolution. She was a pious child who loved prayer and who knew her vocation was to be a nun. However, she took on care of her widowed mother. Finally, when she was 25, and Theodore left home to enter the religious life. She joined the Sisters of Providence who served God by educating children and caring for the poor, the sick, and the dying. In 1840 she was asked to lead a band of missionary sisters and establish her order in the United States, specifically to serve the pioneers in Indiana. Even though her health was fragile, she crossed the Atlantic and then traveled until she reached the wilderness mission of St. Mary of the Woods, which consisted only of a tiny log chapel. She and her five sisters endured the extreme hardships common to life on the frontier. Less than a year after arriving she opened an academy which became the first Catholic women's Liberal Arts college in the United States, still active today, called St. Mary of the Woods College. St. Theodore also established numerous schools, pharmacies, and orphanages throughout the state of Indiana.

50 Ukraine's ultimate hopes seem threefold: (1) reestablishing their pre-2014 borders, (2) finding permanent collective security within the West, formally through NATO to acquire future deterrence from the Russian war machine, and (3) weakening the economic and social fabric of Russia itself to the point that it is no longer a superpower capable of such aggression. Translated that means Ukraine wishes to be a permanent proxy of the West, which will pledge its own strategic security on behalf of Zelenskyy's agendas.

Ukraine applied to join NATO over the weekend. NATO pledged to act on the application.

Given the scale of the damage and the severity of the flooding, it will likely worsen as people are discovered, but so far it is looking better than I had feared so far. For comparison, Katrina had a death toll that approached 2,000 people.

Kingers crossed and prayers up for Florida. They're going to need all the help they can get.

72 A quibble with VDH's analysis. Catherine the Great purchased Crimea. It has been Russian territory since then. It was only attached to Ukraine as an administrative area under the USSR. It voted, after Ukraine initially broke away from the USSR, to be a part of Russia. So, Russia declaring Crimea a part of Russia is not really a annexation. It is simply part of Russia and has been for centuries.

There is a potential upshot to this. Based on prior corporate experience, it is clear that there are one of two outcomes for the United States government based on McKinsey's consulting input:

Pennington conducted no market research and only a minimal review of the cost, “as there was no time,” he wrote. Kramer approved the $12 million price tag. The contract was signed on March 20.

Except when it isn't the norm at all. Like when big companies perform billion-dollar frauds and fined a few million bucks.

100% is punishment. More than that gets into the territory of being punitive (which is not always uncalled for). A couple of percent is just the cost of doing business. No different, in essence, from bribery.

If you get one of those "cost of doing business" fines, you're in the club. If you get a punitive fine, you're not.

132 A quibble with VDH's analysis.

134 It's a shitty and brutal consideration, but the greatest weapon in the arsenal right now when it comes to this sinister evil of DIE is the recession. If it is long and severe, it is going to erode a lot of this shit.

DIE is being driven from the ivory tower in terms of its creation and from the government in terms of its incentives, but it's being implemented by Hollywood and corporate HR, with an assist from corporate boards of directors.

As equity prices fall, profits fall and interest rates rise, some stuff that stopped mattering - stuff like whether you have any customers, whether you're producing your products and services effectively, whether your business structure is sensible - is going to start mattering again. DIE is luxury that a lot of enterprises are going to be unable to continuing paying for. It won't be loudly repudiated, of course, and they will try to bring it back when things start getting better, but this recession is likely to be a pretty big blow against it.

139 "If you get one of those "cost of doing business" fines, you're in the club. If you get a punitive fine, you're not."

Although I wasn't a huge fan of Jay Clayton, he spent an extraordinary amount of time trying to build confidence in the public markets and trying to get more companies to use them. IPO's were taking a hit, and he largely slowed that down. Now, it's the opposite. Nobody wants to enter the public markets and delisting as continue to trend up. You can tell the SEC is desperate because they are trying to extend things like the ESG fraud into the private markets. It won't work of course because they do t have the statutory authority. But in the interim they will keep trying until this administration and its acolytes are gone.

I think that Obama hollowed out the Democratic party like Woodrow Wilson did. The only thing that saved them was their well-established ability to cheat mixed with the entire cultural establishment covering for new cheating. Obama destroyed the Democratic image with the American people, and their power is not homegrown or popular at all. This is the leftist establishment using everything they have to keep the pendulum of power from swinging back.

It will swing back one way or another, and the more they force it to resist the natural movement it should follow, the more violent and further it will swing back.

Of course we all know that every many Jack, Juan and Khalid who crossed this and last year, is now in the US for good (are we up to 5 Million in the current Administration?). Yet it's all "600,000 Gottaways" on the lying, bullshit news.

As Dave in Fla has talked about often, the Steal was orchestrated by their control of 5 key cities in 5 key states; not much more than that. (exclude California, NYC, and Illinois because their votes for a Democrat were guaranteed without any extra "help")

Those cities were Atlanta; Milwaukee; Phoenix; Las Vegas; and Philadelphia. The fraud there allowed them to switch the electoral votes of those 5 states, and that was the election right there.

but today? They are losing in Arizona (see Kari Lake), losing in Nevada, Losing in Georgia, and losing in Wisconsin. Pennsylvania is still a tossup, but looking worse for the dems every day. And of course with Youngkin in place they already have lost in Virginia.

191 The SEC Chair will eventually have his ass handed to him. He's exceeded his statutory authority on several issues and there is pretty well established law on some of that. He wants people to challenge it? OK, game on. We will go that route. He is way wrong on crypto and even Congress disagrees with what he's been doing. There were a few proposals stuck in committee. But they largely had bipartisan support. The short version being a lot of what he is doing was the domain of the CFTC and many things he was doing were outside the SEC's authority.

215 One thing I will note about inflation: This this is an issue that has bedeviled organized governments for... literally all of history. Other than revaluing the currency and reversing debasement, the only 'other' solution that I have seen that worked was Diocletian's.

He did not understand the financial principles at work, but he could not figure out a way to force merchants to accept worthless currency. Even when they tried to revalue the currency and drive the silver/gold content back up, there were too many coins in circulation to reverse the effects, so he came up with a different technocratic solution. Barter. Essentially they catalogued all goods in the empire and assigned them a valuation. You had to turn in so many units of value (shirts, wheat, bricks) in order to pay your taxes. It was wildly 'successful'- and also horrific because it required a massive bureaucracy to not only do the valuations and assessment, but also to administer the collection and so forth.

haha...Seahawks are mad at the Smiley campaign for including a fleeting picture of a team jersey on Smiley's husband. He wore it on a day when the team honored him! They gave it to him that day to wear with the express purpose of exploiting his blindness from a battle wound for publicity purposes!

Now, the shoe is on the other foot and they object. When they gave him the jersey, did they expressly say "If your wife runs for office as a Republican, you cannot wear our jersey any more!".

But in the long run, that led to the fall of the Empire itself. That regulatory climate once installed, never left (of course) and one of the ignored aspects of the barbarian invasions of the 5th century is that most outlying cities and areas found it far easier and less restrictive to live as vassals of the new barbarian overlords, rather than having to put up with Roman bureaucracy any more.

247 I believe DeSantis is running for President.

I think he is planning to do so irrespective of what Trump does.

But if Trump runs, one might ask, how could DeSantis also run, and what would that look like?

I don't think DeSantis is worried about this. It is a question of determined confidence and the sense that history is opening up the way for him. This is something apart from arrogance.

I think forces and realities will play on Trump and ultimately dissuade him from running. Age, family pressures, and the difficult acceptance that it is no longer the moment for him. His endorsement, of course, will have signal impact. It can't be for anyone other than DeSantis (not that the choice will be difficult).

All gut feelings, with some wishful thinking mixed in.

This time it happened at 10 at night, and the impact shook my house. It brought out the whole neighborhood. Dolley started talking with people about things we could do because people won't stop peeling through the curve at high speeds.

The kid had just turned 21 two weeks ago. When I got out of the house, I saw half a dozen kids just bolt from the car. He stayed (so did one other), and he ended up getting arrested for a DUI. The smell of weed was thick from that car and lasted for more than the 1.5 hours I was out there waiting for the police report. His dad showed up and was beyond pissed. I wouldn't be surprised if he let the kid spend the night in jail at least.

It's complicated, but essentially it is because of her knowledge of the secret cabal of evangelists that control all corporations and most of the rest of corporate America.

As a backlash against the righteous election of Joe Biden, the the hard evangelist core of Corporate America - in conjunction with an assist from the fascist Trumpists in those same and other companies and their collaborative control of the media - are now squeezing non-preferred populations to bring them to heel!

Something like that, probably.

274 Battenberg! The Battenberg name was last used by Prince Francis Joseph of Battenberg, youngest son of the Princess of Battenberg, who died childless in 1924. In 1917, most members of the family had been residing in the British Empire and had renounced their Hessian titles, due to rising anti-German sentiment among the British during the First World War. At that point, they changed the family name to Mountbatten, an anglicised version of Battenberg. However, Juan, Count of Barcelona, a son of Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, Queen of Spain, bore the surname of Borbón y Battenberg until his death in 1993.

277 Not understanding a common phrase/word definition leads to an embarrassingly stupid post:

"Sue for peace" Chris Hayes
@chrislhayes- "The more concrete problem is what course of action a US citizen could agitate for to lower the risk. I think probably the best answer is cut off weapons to Ukraine and lean on them to sue for peace now. But if that's the way forward, people should make the case"

The more I think about it The more I have to ask. How does one country at war with another, sue them till peace is achieved? Not playing dumb or trying to be intentionally dense. Just I've never seen this happen. would international court handle this complaint? This man has a show that reaches thousands of people. He thinks we should cut Ukraine off and they'd just sue for peace.

The word “sue” here means simply to seek or press for peace, not litigation.

294 @173 Tom Servo-I'm not saying we will not win seats with the Red Wave/Domestic Terrorists. BUT do you, Dave in Fla, Jackstraw ever take into consideration what the Democrats will do to steal another election in those same five states/cities? As unlikely as it seems to you, is it impossible? For as stupid as we like to paint the left/Dems they sure do have a knack for stealing/breaking the law and we have a knack for, well, losing even when we have proof of a steal.

Do you guys ever take into account or put yourself in the lefts shoes and ask what you would do to steal another election especially if not obeying the law is not a problem and viable option?

Do you ever ask yourselves why the left should give up the power they have accrued, as in why they shouldn't steal another election(s)?

Not asking to start a huge pissing contest, honestly asking so I can understand how you guys see and are approaching this. Trying to understand the mentality so I can wrap my mind around it. I don't believe the left/Dems are invincible, but they certainly have the higher ground like the majority of our law enforcement institutions for example.

We had one of those in my neighborhood. He started down the path of replacing the appropriate section of fence with large runs of high-strength tubular steel set into the ground with significant amounts of concrete. His lawyer warned him not to do it, because he feared that it would expose the owner to liability if he made a fence strong enough that a car could bounce off it and seriously hurt the driver or other occupants. The problem with the speedbump is that local ordinances don't allow for them in areas with speed limits over 30 MPH. The road is 35. So, we'd have to get that changed too. It's on the list of things we're going to be offering the city as a solution.

Big problem with any theory is that the pipeline is still in Germany. It's broken hundreds of miles downstream of the flow. Simple to cap it on shore and have the gas flow into Germany if they get desperate enough. Which they might.

Breaking the pipeline in the Baltic Sea didn't destroy the pipeline, only prevented Sweden from getting any. Which makes not a lot of sense, but will cost the Russians a fortune to repair.

There's a house here that must've been bashed at least half a dozen times over the years.

The road was basically a cowpath when the house was built, I'm sure, but is now a major thoroughfare.

Finally the owner built (or convinced the city to build, I don't know which) a fifteen foot berm on the side of the yard exposed to traffic. Hasn't had his house hit since, though there have been a few cars doing Dukes of Hazzard-style maneuvers off the berm.

Pro tip: when you do one of those maneuvers in real life, your car doesn't magically heal in the next scene.

It is seldom reported but the reason Republicans rallied in 1946 to take over Congress was that the hangover from FDR and Truman's continuance of FDR economics resulted in shortage of practically everything and massive inflation. Thus, the APA and the Taft Hartley acts were passed in that Congress to rein in government agencies and labor unions. Pretty sure that Republicans in Congress won't try to repeat that if they gain power in 2023.

327 My house is also on a curve, but it's set pretty far back from the road so a car would have to be going *really* fast to actually get to the house over the yard.

Thankfully, I haven't had cause to find out yet. The worst that has happened - and it was terrible for the person involved - is a motorcyclist eating pavement on the curve. I got home to find my yard covered with cops and paramedics. There was a blood stain on the road until the next significant rainfall. I don't know if the biker lived or not. I hope so.

He used to have a nice low stone wall framing the driveway and extending several feet on either side of the driveway's apron. Until a cement truck failed to negotiate the curve and plowed through the berm of the drainage ditch, overturned, and took out both the driveway entrance and his stone wall. Also spilled ready mix everywhere.

Trucking company paid for the cleanup and restoration back to original and the county added a shiny new guardrail between the road's edge and the drainage ditch.

I don't go by there often but when I do there's usually fresh skidmarks on the road and crumpled guardrail sections.

To answer that, we have to look at how the steal was accomplished, specifically. Bascially it came down to Democrat operatives controlling the relevant city offices and vote counting machinery, and ALSO the GOP-e looking on and cheering, because they wanted Trump to lose. In Arizona, Kari Lake's primary win even though the GOP-e was trying to steal it from her is evidence their operation there has broken down. In Georgia, even though Kemp and Trump don't get along, Kemp has overseen a cleanup of electoral reforms to guarantee that Stacey Abrams will NOT become what she says she already is - the governor. Wisconsin has been slowly and fitfully cleaning up. Philadelphia is the one big city where it looks like Leftist control is just as strong as ever.

That makes sense. I have no direct experience with it. The closest is my folks had a tree fall and took out a section of fence. They called the guy who built the fence in the first place back out to fix it. He took a look, replaced the section and all was well. I don't know if that's normal - that when the repair contractor is also the build contractor, things go more smoothly - or if the contractor was just a decent guy.

He got picked up by the cops for it, unsurprisingly, and my wife and I let him think things over for the four days he spent in jail before the city got tired of feeding him, (because no one would post his bail).

He cleaned his act up, and made restitution to the stores he'd ripped off. He's still smoking weed though. I remain convinced that as long as he's smoking, he'll never accomplish much in his life.

But HOAs are a pain in the ass that reaches back to the teeth.

So here's a better solution: look at older neighborhoods, that weren't planted in the ground wholesale by property developers yesterday.

If the homes and yards are clean and tidy, and have been for 50+ years, it's a solid bet that your potential neighbors aren't letting it go to seed any time soon.

The county here has done that in places, or bought (emminent domained) the land on the inside of the curve and reworked the roadway into a more gentle arch than a 90 degree curve.

This road is a connector. Originally built when that part of the county was mostly ranchland and lightly travelled. Most of the roads were a series of long straights connected by offsetting 90 degree bends. With encroaching development and higher traffic loads, I expect the county to widen the road into 4-lane concrete with a median divider and take out the 90 degree bends. Then comes the traffic lights . . .

380 Remember how the State of Texas came in with record revenues and a $27 billion surplus? Well, the flip side is California, which just saw 11% personal income tax revenue drop. Funny how chasing away productive taxpayers through punitive taxation and insane over-regulation isn’t a recipe for success

I agree with this. The uniparty only gets offended when the cheating is egregious, like in Phil-thy-delphia, or when it somehow coughs up the wrong result.

Heck, even Keynes is too conservative nowadays as he allowed deficits only when the economy was bad with high unemployment. In good times, governments were supposed to be fiscally prudent with surpluses. Friedman is more or less a Keynesian but focusing on fiat money supply rather than unemployment. Each were addressing what they saw as the problems of the moment.

So, now we get MMT which implicitly repudiates both Keynes and Friedman. In this scenario, taxing is the method of reducing inflation instead of fiscal prudence. Again, the MMT people see the current world of government finances and believe it will continue instead of it being a house of cards that previous theories would predict.

There is precedent for this--rural counties in the Midwest often cheated for Republicans to counteract Democrats cheating in cities. In the South, there were often local Dem cheat machines in rural areas (and to a lesser extent in cities in the South) to control local patronage and government favors.

The easiest way to cheat regardless of paper or electronic ballots is a bloated voter rolls filled with voters who moved away, died, or simply don't vote time after time (many of these might well be fictitious). So, you get more registered voters than residents in places.

391 In yet another humiliation for Putin ...

Ukrainian forces are advancing in the south and may have scored a major breakthrough of Russian lines as they also take more territory in the east.

Kyiv’s troops are attacking down the west bank of the Dnipro River and have taken the town of Zolota Balka, it was reported Monday, amid claims from pro-Kremlin sources that troops had retreated as far as Dudchany, around 15 miles further south. …

However, pro-Russia military bloggers were far more pessimistic – claiming Ukraine had scored a major breakthrough of the frontlines.

According to multiple accounts, Putin’s troops have been forced to pull back to the town of Dudchany – meaning the Ukrainians had advanced around 20 miles.

If confirmed, it would be one of the largest breakthroughs in Kherson since Ukraine began its offensive in early August, and would be a heavy blow for Putin’s men.

Bismarck was a conservative and ardent royalist/nationalist in the European tradition. But, he figured that he had to offer butter to the populace in order to get the guns for unifying Germany. Same way wars worked here.

Conservative does not equal libertarian and has never done so. The modern saint of libertarianism is John Stuart Mills and conservatives (Tories) of that era hated Mills and his new fangled ideas. Essentially, libertarianism is an Anglo phenomenon that places the individual at the center of society--traditional conservative viewed individuals as part of a civil society constituting religion, government (primarily local), and social groups. I would suggest reading Tocqueville for that view. Despite the rhetoric, virtually none of the British nor American conservatives historically viewed individuals as free agents but varied a lot on how to best rein in their worst impulses. Regardless of what Russell Kirk said, traditional conservatism is more an attitude than a coherent philosophy of governing.

Yes and the fact that GOP does not move to curb the cheating suggests that GOPe values its gatekeeping in primaries more than it fears loss to the Dems in general elections. Many of the counties with registrations exceeding population are rural.

399 In the Clinton “Nudge Nudge” article you referred to some guy as “Charlemagne Tha G-d.”

I understand and mostly agree with your reticence to spell out the name of Hashem, and replace one of the letters thereof with a hyphen.

But this Charlemagne fellow is not Hashem. Perhaps in his own mind he is some sort of pagan deity, or maybe he thinks it’s cute to call himself a god.

At any rate, he is not a god, and his ridiculous moniker deserves no special consideration. Maybe, as a made-up proper noun his moniker might be capitalized (as distasteful as that is in this case) but in no way ought it be accorded the fear and respect accorded Hashem when His name is not completely written.
