First-World Problems...

It's an old house, with two different heating systems. Interestingly, the old system (steam radiators) works as intended, with almost no maintenance required. The new system, which is an in-floor radiant heat system requires more maintenance, especially since there were some deficiencies in the initial installation. I've complained about it before, but this time I said, "screw it, I'm fixing it myself!"

So I replaced that pump, which is the main circulating pump that feeds all of the zones and was making an awful racket. But draining the system allows air in, and radiant heat works very badly with air in the lines, so I had to figure out how to purge the air out of all of the zones. And while I was at it I added a system cleaner, which seems to have worked a little, since the water I was pumping through the system to purge it was dark and rusty for many minutes in each loop!

What's the point? Most problems can be solved with sufficient application of thought, and some careful planning beforehand. I know very little about these systems, but just looking at each zone and figuring out how the water moved and where the valves were made all of the difference. And it was fun.

I had to remove 8 feet of baseboard in the kitchen to get a run of cabinets where there never was cabinets. Will I miss it, no clue, don't care. I vanquished it and giggled.

So I gotta go drive it back down to the shop that did the work and have them do it all over again.

Which means I need to pull the interior out again - since you can't get to the rear of the engine without pulling out the interior of the truck.

So bloody knuckles for me. Yay!

Looking at a completely empty calendar for a full week, I decided it was time to replace the garbage disposal and kitchen faucet with the new ones I’d bought back in May. (It was getting so that every week I had to empty the bucket underneath the existing, rusted disposal.)

Being 29, I probably spent more time making the cubbyhole under the kitchen sink comfortable than actually replacing the two items. Blankets, a pillow, two hooks for hanging an LED lantern… sprayed the heck out of the area the night before so that I wouldn’t be surprised by creatures while stuck underneath.

moved the hopper up to the living room. Now, the LR Hopper doen't work but 2 joeys do and one doesn't.

Nope. Sticking a P400 6.5 Turbo Diesel in my Hummer H1. Same engine as the ECV Humvees. When I got the engine I had the shop put in hydraulic rocker arms, and they botched the valve cover (re)install on it. Now they're going to have to do the job... again ... for the 3rd time.

I feel bad for the shop because they're good people - if it was leaking anywhere else but on top of the exhaust, I wouldn't care.

If you have a coffee grinder or a meat grinder (or a kitchen aid with meat grinder attachment, which is what I use), if I can’t get my preferred peanut butter I pop some peanuts into the grinder and make what I think I will need until the next time I get to the store.

Homemade peanut butter is pretty good, though I still prefer the ease of store-bought.

Running out of both peanut butter and peanuts would indeed be an emergency. I’m actually out of peanuts right now, and won’t be replacing them until Thanksgiving—I buy Spanish peanuts by the bucket at a side-of-the-road peanut shop in Oklahoma.

60 I have hot-water baseboard heat, first installed 1963, and it has paid for the house. It's so old (how old is it?) that the original zone control valves were made by FLAIR in BROOKLYN NY. Have not been able to ascertain when the Ackermann Boiler Co went out of business, but they made a hell of a product.

Early pipes-in-the-floor systems (Korean War era) used galvanized steel pipe, and when it rusted away you had to jackhammer the floors out. Over time, the vinyl-asbestos 9-inch tile of the era would soften from the heat, one reason for chair pads around desks. When I took over and built on, I didn't think I could afford all the copper to do it right, so, didn't. Then they came out with plastic tubes you could lay right in the concrete, and I questioned my call. Then the first generation of that plastic all broke up, so I was smart again.

I did away with remote control valves a long time ago, and put in proportioning valves for the four circuits. Works fine. Also, split a circuit into two, using PEX tube to and from, and got away with it.

66 I have two double hung windows that need the lower pane replaced. I've waited three weeks for the company I contacted to show up. Gonna call other places tomorrow. I can put plastic up outside and they have storm windows covering part of it, but I'd like to have it fixed.

Then the furnace is gas and there are some issues with the vents that need to be fixed. Got the gas turned up last week. Will call the HVAC folks again and see if I can get them out.

And the plumbing needs work but I treat it like Mexican plumbing. I'll see if I can get that working better next week. It will all get fixed sometime.

Actually, that's wrong, That's not the "max allowable," it's the point where it tips over to "too much crud in it".

It's really only allowable to have 29 insect fragments and zero rodent hairs per 100 grams of peanut butter.

Maybe 1 rodent hair per 200 grams would be okay?

The window frames aren't in great shape but I don't care if they open. I'd just like glass in there.

88 I prefer electrical resistance radiant heating myself but not practical for large areas. Major issue is that you have less moving parts and problems. If you ever install one, make sure to put two thermostat probes when installing under tile. That is what is most likely to go out and you already have a spare thermocouple available if the first one goes out.

99 I moved into an oil-fired baseboard heat house. Taco was something I learned about. I also learned that oil boilers need to be cleaned out, because mine was full of ash.

The local utility offered a great deal to upgrade to electric, keeping the old system as backup if they needed to cut you off for a couple of hours. The electric boiler is 18 inches square and six deep, and hangs on the wall. But there was a switch in the pipe (water MUST be flowing) that would stop the electric boiler if it didn't like the flow. This switch kept shutting off the electric boiler.

I read the instructions. Said switch had to be at least four inches from a pipe bend. It wasn't. Once it was, all worked well, except: when the boiler would kick in, it really sucked in the power. You didn't notice until it shut off, and all the lights would instantly brighten.

I agree. My preferred peanut butter is the Trader Joe’s version that requires the stirring. But long ago, before I was 29, I lived next to a “natural foods” store; they had the greatest peanut butter: it was peanuts, you stuck it into a grinder, and out came warm peanut butter.

They went out of business, I eventually got a Kitchen-Aid, and before TJ’s came around I discovered I could do it myself. It doesn’t require anything except peanuts and salt. Good peanuts are oily enough on their own to make peanut butter.

I have come not to trust any peanut butter that has ingredients other than peanuts and salt.

The hard part is cleaning the grinder afterward, which is part of why I don’t do it myself more often.

Probably a closed loop system unless you have wells or a pond on your property. Closed loop are a bit more reliable but more expensive. The open loops using either wells or ponds are cheaper but reliant on mother nature making sure water is available to circulate.

I remember, back in the day, a time where we were touring Montreal during the Expo.

Many of the houses were in hilly sections, with very steep driveways. The tour guide said that these drives were heated, so that the occupants could get in and out during the winter.

It's under hardwood flooring, so it isn't as efficient. But once it warms up it is still lovely. I do not have it on a setback, so once it turns on in late September it stays at the the same temperature until May!

There is a guy in Alabama who said he took the door off his, turned it face up and put drainage holes in it, and filled it part ways with dirt to plant sweet potatoes, since his got eaten by voles. With a clear cover it should act as a winter planter as well, it would be pretty insulated from the weather.

He called it his "hugelfreezer"

We are in the process of buying a second insert for an existing fireplace. We are probably going with the more efficient pellet stove for that one but they do require more care plus you have to have a source for pellets. Our other one uses logs but is less efficient generating more ash, etc. but requiring less care.

A vibratory multitool do a pretty good job of removing grout using the proper blade--much less fuss and dust than the Zip tool by Dremel.

I have found that a good multitool is pretty much indispensable for a number of projects big and small. Unless you need cordless, you can get more for your money buying a good corded one.

Should we consider any other options besides area rugs? Replacing the floor seems like a waste since they seem fairly new. I kinda wish there was an easy way to provide efficient radiant heat on the floor beside the bed and in the bathrooms and at work stations (kitchen, office desk).

184 I have three ways to heat Beartooth Manor. There's the fireplace insert which provides heat for most of the year. There's a forced gas furnace which gets some use in the winter to warm up the Mrs. sewing room and grandkids room. We also have about 750 sq ft of heated tile in the kitchen, dining room, and informal living room. So even if we lose gas and or electricity I can still keep the manor toasty.

I would not want to try to heat the whole house that way, but find it better than "milk house blowers."

I've had years and years of practice and never improved. I half ass look at the underside of the USB to see what's going on and try again and it doesn't go in. I look again, full-on-ass. 202 I am facing a somewhat similar issue here at stately Peon Manor. The house is heated by an ancient gas-fired "boiler", and a circulating pump sends the hot water through baseboard radiators in the various rooms. House is split into two zones, each controlled by a zone valve. The zone valves, when fully open, trip a microswitch that turns on the main burner. Trouble is, the zone valves become sticky, because they rarely cycle rapidly. Then the burner never comes on, although the pilot remains lit, and the house becomes cold. Happened last winter while I was away, and froze all the water lines.

For now, I have taken the motor drivers off both zone valves, and left them both open. One thermostat is now connected directly to the main burner. So far, so good. Heat has come on as needed, and the house remains warm. 1/2

When I arrived for Saturday evening Mass a church staff member immediately told me that the power was out and Mass may be cancelled. I simply replied "Oh." As she went to call the power company, I thought, "Why would THAT make any difference? History is filled with centuries of Masses held without electricity. There are Masses held TODAY around the world without electricity. The only instances that a Mass should be cancelled are imminent danger to the congregation or no celebrant!" I just shook my head and went in to pray.

The power came on a few minutes later to shouts of "Yeaaaa!" "Praise the Lord!" Yup, First World Problem.

They were happy, but I was disappointed. I was really looking forward to a real old-fashioned Candlelight Mass.

One of our local venues recently used all of our available talent of black actors/singers to put on a wonderful show of The Color Purple.

The audience had far more black people in attendance than usual. The mask rate was approximately 90% for black people and 20% for white people.

I want to avoid another freeze-up in this house this coming Winter. What I am considering is to break into the hot water heating line between the gas boiler and the baseboard circuit, and plumb in a 240 volt domestic water heater. Set the stat on that heater for ten degrees less than the normal operating temp of the boiler, but ALSO put the electric heater on a contactor controlled by one of the two wall thermostats. Set the wall stat for the boiler at 65, and the wall stat for the electric at 55. I don't know if the water heater will have enough jam to keep the house at 55 during an extreme cold snap, but it will probably prevent the house from freezing. I would also tie in a big red warning light to the electric heater with a sign: "if this red light is on, furnace has gone out. Get help from..." That way, the party who comes around every few days to feed and water the cat can get hold of a techie to relight the furnace. And/or call me.

226 Oil Peon, this sounds like the setup I had, except the hot water electric furnace was purpose built. It worked just like a water heater, but in a much smaller space--thus the need that the water was circulating before the elements would turn on. That much heating in a very small space would go bad quickly.

My ex the ex inspector says it probably won't work the way you want and definitely does not meet fire code.
