Hurricane Ian Re-Energizes Over Ocean and Slams Into South Carolina Coast

It just made landfall again in South Carolina, now as a category 1 hurricane.

AccuWeather meteorologists warned that despite being rated lower on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale than when it slammed into Florida with deadly consequence, Ian will still pack a punch and unleash life-threatening impacts as it pushes inland into Friday night.

"Ian's structure is similar to that of a powerful nor'easter, with most of the storm's rain and wind focused to the north and west of the center," AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said. "But, make no mistake, Ian will hit with the force of a hurricane in the Carolinas, especially along the upper half of the South Carolina coast."

It might not be as disastrous but it won't be any kind of fun for South Carolinians. Note they're predicting "extreme" storm damage between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, with 10-15 foot storm surges:

stormovercarolina.jpg

Keep yourselves dry and safe!

The storm's track will take it onto land, into West Virginia, which, at least, should finally kill it, because, well, the only thing I know about hurricanes is that they strengthen over water and weaken over land.

Not as much media coverage of this, partly because the storm isn't as powerful, but mostly because there's no future presidential candidate the traitorous propaganda Marxist Media is looking to destroy based in South Carolina.

The rescue efforts continue in battered Florida:

Prayers for Florida.

I'm reminded of some hurricane that came through about six years ago. One friend posted on a work chat a picture of a child's plastic chair on its side with the text, "We will rebuild."

That's how I've felt about every hurricane that's come through Charleston since I've moved here. Not to diminish the actual damage that happened in Florida, but SC seems lucky when it comes to hurricanes since Hugo.

I agree completely. He was a huge target for mockery and satire, but here's the thing. If you want to do good satire and poke fun at something, then you have to like it at least a little. If all you have is hate for the target, then that's all you'll put out there.

Dana Carvey's George Bush was partly so funny and effective because he liked George Bush. Blazing Saddles is so effective because Mel Brooks liked westerns. These guys have nothing but hate for their targets so it ends up bitter, nasty, and not funny.

I don't understand how it can appeal much even to their fellow commie travelers.

Hurricanes come to die in Pennsylvania. Dumping trillions of gallons of water in our rivers. We're #2 in historic flood damage. There are already traffic stopping saw horses at the end of my street because cars will go way underwater if they're not stopped beforehand. Temporary stop signs in position at intersections where lights are bound to fail when the electricity inevitably goes out.

Prediction is for four days of rain to come. No prayers for me, but perhaps for the people in the flood zones that took a hit last year and still haven't recovered. Imagine rivers flowing 30 feet or more above usual and living 15 feet above them. Decades of zoning regulations to try to contain stormwater all doing little except keeping lawyers busy fighting them. Because preventing poor people from purchasing land in flood zones is racist.

Once a nation starts basing its actions on making others do their bidding, conflict is baked into the cake. Often, the nation initiating any such conflict based on wooly headed notions of 'collective rights' of this or that group eventually comes to rue the day as the losers survive to fight again--with the added incentive of grudge match politics. That is why the era of grabbing other people's land via force pretty much is not compatible with the idea of nation-states. Worked all right when the peasants did not really care who ruled them.

229 I lived in Rock Hill back then. Hugo was still a Cat 2 when it hit us. Actually got to experience what it felt like to be in the eye, 160 miles inland.

You will experience few things more surreal than looking up at night as the eye of a hurricane passes over you. I hope to God never to see such a thing again.

230 215 Hurricanes bring storm surge, high winds and tornadoes. Property is destroyed and people die. I guess a lot of people think the stories about the storms are tall tales, until they see it for themselves.

We've gone through many and have friends and family members who have lost everything, so I'm not unsympathetic to those suffering. Just amazed at some folks reactions, especially the press.

Realists tend to be pessimists in believing there is nothing new under the sun but most people want to avoid thinking unpleasant thoughts as though Big Govt or 'good intentions' will shield them from suffering.

231 I think this is why so many Europeans--not the leaders who just want control, but the people----fetishize the EU and don't want to see it broken up. They believe doing so will lead to wars like in the past.
Posted by: JoeF. at September 30, 2022 05:17 PM (mR6Gs)

If it doesn't break up, it will lead to the other kind of war, where the government sends in troops to repress unruly subjects. Look at the way the EU treats Poland/Hungary for not playing ball, and to a lesser extent how they drove England to Brexit.

Peace/Order/Tolerance/Negotiation comes from a mindset, not the size of the country. Our nation had only one civil war because we had a lot of common heritage and ideas and ways to agreeably come to a common solution most can accept, and the elites had a practical sense of what bad stuff can happen if you don't act civilized.

The EU has none of those advantages and like us, has an elite that is increasingly fixated on their impractical ideas and has no sense of responsibility to the citizens or fear of the consequences of uncivilized actions on their part.

232 Maybe they should do a Saturday Night Trans?
I hear that might be popular with the folks.

234 St Augustine, not Rome as an explanation of how Christianity and the wars could be justified under the faith. Rome itself was actually quite into increasing its land area via wars.
Posted by: whig at September 30, 2022 05:25 PM (CXr4y)

Sure, but they were all *justified*! Says so right on the forms they filled out.

But ironically, post Punic Wars a lot of kinglet states gave their countries to Rome to avoid local civil wars as inheritances. The Roman tax farmers where bad, but they saw civil wars as worse.

235 Glad to James Madison and Dolley and the boys are o.k. I was also wondering about Jane D'oh. She lives on an island of the coast of SC, doesn't she?

236 Hurricane Alisha in texas '83, at that time one of the worst to hit mainland, name retired....taped all of the windows, got a couple of kegs, everybody brought a bottle, cooked a brisket...filled all three bathtubs, even the 6ft round one...only water damage was from over filling it, soaking the carpet. some trees down, short term flooding of low lying areas...BIG issue was Houston had boomed and many many new tall "glass" buildings had gone up...most had tar/gravel roofs...the wind blew the gravel into the surrounding glass and the downtown streets were three feet deep in it....papers from the blown out window offices was found up to 50 miles away. Most hurricanes we headed to the coast and surfed until we just couldn't anymore...waves too blown out, or we were too worn out. The beach house we hung out at on Surfside finally went bye bye during Harvey

237 Saw some headline "Putin stages largest Land Grab since WW2!!!"
Uhmm...did ya miss the whole ISIS thang somehow???
Closer to home, Obama Biden gobbled more sq miles of US territory into Federal Lands than Putin seized..

238 The storm surge hit Pawley's Island at high tide, dammit. Georgetown was also badly flooded. Huge mess, even with a Cat. 1 hurricane.

My cousins are planning to stay on the island in October; they're waiting to hear if that will be possible.

Posted by: Beverly at September 30, 2022 06:22 PM (2Lh5h)

239 Online there is a dramatic photo of the Pawleys pier completely under the waves -- it was washed south along the beach, completely destroyed.

241 Trees down all around, but the old brickhouse is weathertight. Storm passed and now is north of Georgetown/MB. Now its a matter of saturated soil and other water issues. Storm sent the bikers packing so it should be a quite weekend.

242 to any idiots u encounter that say "unprecedented" "global warming"

On the bldgs in downtown Charleston, there are markers ~12 ft-16 ft high where a previous hurricane's waters went.

243 I am making $50 an hour working from home. I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning $11,000 a month by working on a laptop, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply. Everybody must try this job now by

244 I live about 20 miles west of Asheville, NC. We didn't even get an inch of rain. The storm tracked further east than it was thought it would. The breezes were pretty chilly, though.
