Just The ONT, Ma'am

Good evening Morons. I hope all of our Florida peeps have weathered the storm and are safe. My mom is in Lakeland. I haven't heard from her since yesterday, but I'm not too worried. She lives in a block house, she was well prepared, and Lakeland is inland. Why don't we open the ONT with a hurricane tip:

Tonight's Argument

The 100 Greatest TV Shows of All Time

I think the list suffers a bit from some recency bias, but I'm sure that many of you will have your own opinions. Say, here's an idea. Why don't you share them in the comments?

To Boldly Go

In 1987 I was just geeked to have a new Star Trek show, but as time has passed I realized that TNG is not my favorite iteration of Trek. The original ST was conceived as “Wagon Train to the stars”, it was about, to coin a phrase, truth, justice and the American way, and how those values could stand up when tested in the crucible of space exploration. TNG was the UN in space. Then DS9 came along and blew all of them away. Still, happy anniversary TNG.

Cop Stuff

For some reason, a lot of cop stuff landed on my content list this week. I'll lump it all together here. First of all, this tragedy.

15-year-old at center of Amber Alert killed in shootout between deputies, suspect on 15 Freeway

The suspect was her father, who had kidnapped her. He got in a shootout with police, and she broke cover and was killed. Here's my absolutely and completely non-expert opinion, based entirely on the reports of the incident in the media: Tragedy. If police are engaged in an active firefight with the occupant of a vehicle, and someone dressed in tactical gear breaks from that vehicle and charges towards them, it is reasonable to assume that they are under attack and to engage that target. The fact that it was the little girl and not an attacker makes this a tragedy. Very sad. Regrettable. But unavoidable at times due to the fact that we're all fallible human beings.

The bigger problem we have is the nature of policing in this country. Traditionally, the role in society that police filled was to protect and serve. Yes, their job involved enforcement duties, but they were expected to be as fair as possible, to demonstrate judgment and restraint (kid w/ a six pack "Go home kid, don't let me catch you again") and, most of all, to run to the sound of gunfire. In short, they were expected to be paladins, and were accorded respect and honor commensurate with those expectations (I'm talking generally here, I know there have always been bad cops).

Now, however, cops are enforcers and bureaucrats. Their job is to punish non-orthodoxy, to meet quotas and most of all to keep people cowed to make sure that OBEY. (Again, generally speaking, and mostly about the role they are expected to fill in society. There's lots of good cops out there). So you get police forces full of Tommy Tacticals who get their little pee-pees hard by being a bully with a badge, Debbie Diversity-Hires who don't know the difference between a taser and a pistol and Carl Cowards who stand in a hallway for an hour washing their hands while some lunatic shoots a couple of dozen school children.

This is a seismic shift, and one that's really hard for a lot of older, reflexively back-the-blue types to get their head around. I know, I'm one of them. It's also a much less pleasant society to live in.

Here's an after action report on a shooting in Tacoma, Washington, Tacoma Police OIS - 6700 South Madison St (8/28/22).

The video is 8 minutes long, but it does a really good job of walking through the incident. I want to bring your attention to the part that starts at 5:06, body cam footage from Officer Munn who took the suspect down. That is one cool and collected cop.

Pulls up to scene.
Puts down coffee.
Opens door.
Remembers to grab his keys.
Walks to the rear of his car.
Gets out his rifle, charges it. Braces himself against the side of the car.
Fires one shot, hitting the suspect at 183 yards.
Flicks the safety back on.
Fin

Betcha he saw action in the sandbox.

Finally, there's this cop, who truly embodies the mantra “protect and serve”.

Dusty in here.

Criminal Follies

I'm from Chicago, Bro

A man casually carrying a shotgun and claiming to be from Chicago walked into a Florida convenience store during an attempted robbery but walked out when a clerk displayed his own weapon, authorities said.
Rakim Stephen Tate, 32, made a bad decision that “became a worse decision” when he walked into a convenience store on Sept. 9 with a visible shotgun to his side, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
He is charged with openly carrying a prohibited weapon and attempted robbery with a firearm.
Tate walked around the store for a few seconds before a clerk out of view from a camera in the store is heard talking to him, according to security footage. The clerk apparently noticed Tate arming himself before he entered the store and went into a back room to arm himself with his personal weapon, authorities said.

Video of the incident at the link.

Finally, this guy made a whole bunch of poor decisions. He was wanted for home invasion and bank robbery. Cops were following him, and moved to apprehend him outside a mini-mart.

"Hmm, I've got a dog latched onto my ass and two officers with carbines pointed at me about 3 feet away. I know! I'll pull out my trusty Taurus!" The video notes that he had “one round in the chamber”. When I'm on the lam I always keep at least 3 rounds in the chamber at all times.

Lying To Women

And not the good kind of lying that gets you laid (I'm kidding ladies, I'M KIDDING! Stop throwing stuff!).

Women have been led astray on egg-freezing, bombshell study finds

Many American women who do want kids are delaying it, and opting to freeze their eggs—a seemingly magical solution that means they can make a decision about parenthood on their own terms.

But this strategy may not be as failsafe as expected. Groundbreaking research, the first of its kind in the U.S. finds that for the majority of women, egg-freezing sadly won’t result in a child being born.

Only around one in three of those who choose to freeze their eggs will wind up having a child after going through the entire process, the study finds—and that success rate drops drastically for older women.

On one hand, I feel sorry for women who were told this was an easy way to “have it all” and now are facing child-free futures that they didn't want. On the other it's hard not to think “Oh well. You made your choice. Too bad the results weren't quite what you were promised”

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by self-defense:

22 Those straps *might* make it harder for the winds to peel your roof.

We live in a trailer. It's gone thru 135 mph winds, losing some chunks of roofing. But the structure and ground anchors are rated for 140 mph+.

The piles of broken loose trailers seen in Fl are caused mostly by storm surge, not necessarily by winds.

Evening, y'all.

100 A couple of points on Dave's commentary...

First, the guy on the ground with the dog and 3 cops with rifles surrounding him -- The text sez he had a round in the chamber and *rounds* in the magazine.

But yeah, his decision making skillz were not top notch.

Second, the 15 y.o girl wearing tach gear -- The evidence isn't in yet, but she as well as dear old dad *may* have been firing thru the back window as the they were being pursued. Dad was for sure.

I really can't fault the cops on this one, unless there are lies. Many times, there are lies.

Poor girl is about 2 or 3, I think. They opened up her head over the summer, got the entire tumor out, but then decided they needed to give her radiation treatments as well to prevent it coming back. No chemo, thankfully.

Last radiation treatment was today. Little girl is doing just fine, has a big grin on her face in the FB pictures, and they don't think the tumor will be coming back.

174 Sure, that's a Rolling Stone TV list. Not written by people who have much history with actual television.

Since TV is old enough now to have several "golden eras," one list will always be an insult. They should always be set up by genre or time period. There were a lot of minor gems, prototypes, short-run masterpieces. Lots more then than now.

We saw "The Defenders" as just an updated Perry Mason, but later I realized that without EG Marshall there would never have been all those hip later court procedurals. I especially liked Robert Loggia in "T.H.E. Cat" (he owned a jazz club). Checkmate seemed intelligent, and you never hear it mentioned any more. Not long ago "Blue Light" came up, with Robert Goulet(!) as a show-biz spy in Nazi Germany. The fun bit is that books that were Official Secreted decades later render some of the plots surprisingly plausible. No love for "Follow The Sun"?

The problem with all those 'List of best ....." is that the content is already subjective, then to go and put the items in some sort of priority order, itself subjective, means we end up with a meaningless article. Never try to rank items such as songs, movies, TV shows, etc. I looked at that list and there are many which I've never even heard of. No two people will ever agree on the same order of such a large list. Think about it, we each have our own tastes and reasons for liking a show.
I noticed Leno's Tonight Show was missing.

The missus and I normally dvr a few shoes so we can power through the stoopid or propaganda commercials but the NCIS show bleed over into NCIS Hawaii (hate when they do that and despise NCIS Hawaii) and wouldn't you know that had a lesbian relationship in the plot and lip lock during the show which had absolutely ZERO to do with the episode. They include it just because. Turned it off immediately.

I would have thought the same with any romance as it has NOTHING to do with the plot... why must directors/producers feel they MUST include stuff like that... it's not like I'm watching porn then I wouldn't care if there was a plot or not. And big networks wonder why their ratings are continually in the toilet..

1 Pinch crook's nose shut with clip#1.
2 When crook opens his mouth to breathe, jam the 9mm wrench in his mouth, and fill his mouth with shells.
3 Use clip #2 to pinch the crook's lips shut, causing crook to choke on the macaroni.

Works every time!

Just saw the latest model runs. Ian's projected track continues to shift eastward. Before it looked like it was gonna hit Charleston, now the landfall looks to be around Georgetown, sort of halfway in between Charleston and Myrtle Beach. Means Myrtle Beach may get more trouble.

And more east of Charlotte. So, continuing to knock on wood.

453 Caliban, ever see the pre-Mrs Peel first seasons of Avengers? It was the same but different, with Honor "Pussy Galore" Blackman as the female lead, and much darker jazzy music by Brit jazz star Johnny Dankworth. I am crazy about the later theme -- and was pretty crazy about Diana Rigg and the way she wore a Lotus.

Some felt that the Peel and Steed Avengers were just a sort of parody of the original program[me]. Some feel the same about James Bond movies.

British shows should probably be on a separate list, but that leaves All in Family, Sanford and Son, The Office and a host of others out in the cold.

BBC had a one-season breezy situationer called "Take Three Girls" with theme music by Pentangle.

522 lice are utterly harmless. Now try bed bugs. When I was a co-manager for low-income apartments I once had a tenant who furnished his apartment with free furniture he found along the side of the road. We had no idea he was doing this. One day he complained that he had bugs in his apartment so we sent in an exterminator to do a regular pest treatment. The exterminator was back in like 5 minutes and said the floor was crawling with bed bugs. Then we did a deeper inspection and found the whole apartment was infested at a level like nobody's ever seen before. He took out an eight unit apartment building. We had to move everybody out and completely treat the entire building and then let it sit quiet for a while to make sure they didn't come back. Of course he never got nailed with any financial responsibility cuz he didn't have anything. But he did get to move and because this completely screwed up his credit, he couldn't rent another apartment. So what did he do? He bought a cheap car and started trying to live on the property by showing up after we went home for the evening and he would then leave before we got there in the morning until one day I caught him passed out.

566 "Hmm, I've got a dog latched onto my ass and two officers with carbines pointed at me about 3 feet away. I know! I'll pull out my trusty Taurus!"

From a practical standpoint - pull out a gun when the cops are already leveling rifles at you, and you're going to get shot to bits. Smarter to fight the dog hands-on if you must. From an ethical standpoint: cops sometimes create lethal force situations with poorly conceived dog usage. Here is the problem; here, when the suspect pulls out a piece, the cops are legally and morally justified in lighting him up. But on the other end of this, *sometimes* there is also no legal or ethical requirement to allow yourself to get chomped by a fucking dog
Failure to follow verbal commands without any further aggravating circumstances (warrant here is a circumstance) justifies the officer going hands on. It does not justify dog mauling, which is precisely why they don't just throw dogs at literally anybody. The dog is a step somewhere past tasering, and most importantly the officer does not have ironclad control over the dog. Sometimes the dog is an unwarranted escalation, sometimes the dog goes too far.. K9 guy has to not be a dumbfuck.

He enjoyed fussing about Jack Lord. Called him "Pretty Boy". He would say, "Look at him, look at him! He's posing! He thinks he's the stuff!".

At the time, I didn't understand. Daddy was enjoying himself. I mean, Jack Lord's hair was legend, Dad's was not. Daddy appreciated Jack Lord, but in a back-handed sort of way.

Otherwise, mimimal house damage; a few large trees went over but neighbors cleared them from streets & only lake docks were completely destroyed. That varies with the individual. Me, some of the heavier ones, while they can help in the short term, have long term drawbacks. Glenn Frey of the Eagles had a RA, and was done in by some of those long term effects.

710 Thanks, I need a conservative opinion on star trek. I am a fan of all things sci fi and fantasy and have seen nearly every movie and tv show and even anime series that are set in space. Except star trek.

Just cant get into TNG, been trying for about 3 decades. Powered through Enterprise. It was ok, but inferior to shows like Farscape and Andromeda and even stargate.

Sounds like i should take DS9 for a spin, I like the more babylon 5 type premise.

Do you all need some pasta for the Moron-Meet up?

721 I almost never write comments, however after
browsing through a few of the comments on Just The ONT, Ma'am.
I actually do have 2 questions for you if it's okay.

Is it only me or do some of these comments come across like they are left by brain dead folks?
:-P And, if you are writing on other places, I would like to keep up with you.

Would you post a list of every one of your social networking pages like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?
