Daily Tech News 28 September 2022

Top Story

  • Intel has announced its 13th generation Raptor Lake CPUs, available October 20. (Tom's Hardware)

    Just three models initially:

    13600K (6P+8E cores) at $319
    13700K (8P+8E cores) at $409
    13900K (8P+16E cores) at $589

Intel is boasting of improvements over its own previous generation and in comparison to AMD's previous generation, which is just slightly awkward since AMD's new generation chips are available in shops today and make the comparison just a little less favourable. (CPUBenchmark)

These are not bad chips, and there are some cases where I'd recommend them over AMD right now, but the 13900K is roughly comparable to the 7900X, not the 7950X.

  • Meanwhile Intel's high-end (for Intel) Arc A770 graphics card will be available October 12 for $329. (Tom's Hardware)

The viability of this one depends entirely on driver support. Reviews so far of lower-end Arc GPUs say that games run just fine, but the drivers to enable the advanced features of the cards are a disaster.

The A770 has 16GB of RAM, more than any other card in its price range (double Nvidia's 3060 Ti or AMD's 6600 XT), so if Intel keeps improving the drivers it may become a worthwhile option in the next year.

  • The Bae case has landed. Bae has been informed and hopes I'll have fun building my new system. No, really.

Tech News

  • Intel also showed off a new 34 core workstation CPU. (WCCFTech)

Not intentionally. They showed off a wafer of CPUs, and the internet being what it is, people had figured out that this was a previously unannounced product with 34 Raptor Lake cores in a mesh arrangement connected to eight channels of DDR5 RAM within thirty seconds of the photo being made public.

  • A new power is arising. Its victory is at hand. (Nature)

I speak of course of mice, which were pretty much immortal and indestructible already, and now have nanobots:
Bioinspired microrobots capable of actively moving in biological fluids have attracted considerable attention for biomedical applications because of their unique dynamic features that are otherwise difficult to achieve by their static counterparts. Here we use click chemistry to attach antibiotic-loaded neutrophil membrane-coated polymeric nanoparticles to natural microalgae, thus creating hybrid microrobots for the active delivery of antibiotics in the lungs in vivo. The microrobots show fast speed (>110 μm s−1) in simulated lung fluid and uniform distribution into deep lung tissues, low clearance by alveolar macrophages and superb tissue retention time (>2 days) after intratracheal administration to test animals. In a mouse model of acute Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia, the microrobots effectively reduce bacterial burden and substantially lessen animal mortality, with negligible toxicity. Overall, these findings highlight the attractive functions of algae–nanoparticle hybrid microrobots for the active in vivo delivery of therapeutics to the lungs in intensive care unit settings.

  • AMD has announced a new range of embedded processors - Epyc V3000. (Serve the Home)

These are based on Zen 3 - up to eight cores, support DDR5 RAM, and have two USB 4 ports and two 10Gb Ethernet ports built in. Integrated graphics are not mentioned.

Which is odd because this seems to be a truly separate product line and not a repurposed laptop part, and I wouldn't have thought the market justified the expense of that.

  • The hacker who infiltrated Australia's second largest phone company and stole data on 11 million customers says oops. (Bleeping Computer)

And has withdrawn their extortion demands.

  • Found the catch. (Liliputing)

The Star Labs StarFighter is a 16" laptop with a 4K 16:10 screen, a choice of Intel or AMD CPUs (up to 12900H and 6800H respectively), up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM, two M.2 slots, two Thunderbolt / USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI, an SD card slot, an audio jack, and a removable webcam module so you don't have to worry about privacy because you can just leave it in the laptop bag.

    And the Four Essential Keys.

And it weighs just 1.4kg (3.1lb), which is the same as my 14" Dell laptop.

The catch? The RAM is soldered in place.

Also no USB 4 on the AMD model because they couldn't get the interface chips. The component shortage is ongoing.

16 Was at the feed store yesterday evening and the Wawa situation came up. After some hilarity in trying to understand what the hell a Wawa actually is, the topic came to, "what would you do if caught up in that melee?" It was decided that there were three choices - run - know where the exits are, especially the back one(s); shelter, know where the employee breakroom is, probably. has a locking door; and, fight, head for the meat department and shelter/defend from there. Very Omega Man discussion, the old farmers in my area are not amused by the goings on in urban land.

25 I saw my first hit piece in anticipation of a DeSantis presidential run today. The claims were that he has the personality of a sheet paper, is a cold fish to a staff, and is generally aloof and arrogant. They also claim that he thinks Trump is a fool and that he laughed at him openly and mocked him openly during both elections. Of course this was all based on a single source that was knowledgeable of the situation. Probably Madison Cornbread. We haven't heard anything from her lately.

The Left is just now gearing up to tear into him. When he announces he's running for president all hell is going to break loose.

I've been thinking for a while that the default action when a take over happens or crime becomes untenable in a downtown store that the corporations immediately shut it down and pave it to the ground. Do that enough and these downtowns will become ghost towns or the cities will quickly figure out they need to make some changes. My bed is the cities will never figure it out.

You see the same exact thing with Meloni (although a few shades of the Palin reflex there as well.) As I have said about Meloni, I like her so far but I am not sold completely yet. The funny thing is, the ultra reflexive action against any of these guys automatically makes you think 'Hmmm, they must be good.'

The left is stupid and does not understand human nature. This is why they have started to go full retard censor. They have not actually studied history enough to realize they are doing the same stupid shit totalitarians have always done and they are almost surprised when it works out the way it always has and then they have to respond as totalitarians always do.

39 A new twist on the Nord Stream explosions. I found out this evening that a a new pipeline opened up between Norway yesterday that transits through Denmark and lands in Poland. The Polish politician that was cheering on Biden for supposedly blowing the Nord Streams may have had very self serving reasons for those comments. The plot thickens.

In other news, it's up to the Russians to shut off the supply of natural gas to the busted pipelines. Otherwise, they're are just going to keep polluting the hell out of the Baltic Sea.

40 Case in point, this story linked at Insty:

https://tinyurl.com/ye5zzrfw

I will also note that when I tried looking up videos on Meloni yesterday, it was very hard to find her in her own words, there were a lot of videos talking about her, but speeches she has given were somewhat sparse. The first results that came up were other people talking about how she was a fascist, etc.

I find the predictability of commies beyond tedious.

44 Of course the Ukrainian pipeline is still functional too so Europe can still get Russian oil. Apparently the EU officials have forgotten that the reason the Germans wanted Russia to build Nord Stream in the first place was the Ukrainian's charming habit of shutting down the pipeline in the winter to extort " charitable donations" and stealing fuel from time to time.

The pipeline passes through Poland before entering the Baltic Sea. It would be easier for the Poles to put a stop valve/control system on it (if there isn't one already).

If the German peace protests were larger than we're told, it removes the pipeline from the equation while the new pipeline partially replaces the loss and the Germans have less influence over the remaining, Ukrainian, pipeline.

I'm looking at a relief map of that area and the water depth is between 0 and 100 meters. So somewhere between very shallow and about 300 feet deep. Not much help. I'd have to see a nautical chart for a better number. But well within the realm of possibility for a possible scuba trip.

It is complete nonsense. I can't remember the details of how the Democrats are making this claim, but it's based on some innocuous situation that they've convoluted and blown up into the Hindenburg. The country will go bankrupt before any political party gets rid of those two things for the foreseeable future.

Where I live I'm about 50 miles from the TV broadcast antennas so it's difficult to get over the air signals. Fortunately YouTube TV supplies these locals stations. The cross platform aspect of it is highly useful as I can get the service on my TV, my PC's, and my phone. The software is some of the best I've ever seen for this type of environment, it is clear, it is easy to use and it's highly customizable. The service itself is rock solid. I have yet to have an outage. If you are leaning towards a streaming service for this type of entertainment, I can highly recommend this this service after having used it now for three months. I'm going to give it another three months and see if I still want to subscribe, but for now I'm enjoying it. I can't believe I just said that about a Google product. What the hell is wrong with me?

162 Virgin Atlantic will now let male pilots and cabin crew wear skirts. Not that I am going to fly anywhere ever again, but I'll be damned if I am flying on a plane with a psycho pilot in a skirt.

168 Sarah Huckabee Sanders has been running TV ads lately, which at first glance seems strange. Most people can't even name who is running against her. She must have money that has to be burned, and the good thing is her ads are not so much her but a reminder that Retardo sitting in the White House is the root of all problems.

170 It seems like hurricanes always strengthen more than expected, then when they make landfall and windspeeds can be independently verified, they weaken really fast.

I think so, Pixy, but if the plural of mouse is mice, wouldn't the plural of spouse be spice?
