Spooktacular Eerie Halloween-in-September Cafe

halloweendog.jpg

A lot of scaaaary links tonight.

Attack of the Ducks.

Oh no! She's in the clutches of a scaaaary ghoooooul!

Good reflexes.

Sound on: Weresquirrel. Chipsquatch!

Special Duncanthrax link.

This cat's getting ready for Halloween.

Spooooky ghooooooost...

Intruders at the windows.

The children of the night... what sweet music they make...

Dog in Spider Costume prank:

doginspidercostume.jpg

Video of the prank here.

Spoooooky mystery critter:

It may look like a gremlin, but it's a silvery marmoset. Comments under the post say it's sickly. If it were healthier it would look more like this:

83 OK, small chunks (per bluebell) but I think this deserves better.

1- Here's what I think is happening with the administration.

Chunk 1
Since TFG was in office the Left has been heavy into A/B testing.
2. The daily briefings with KJP have made it very clear that they have taken the daily talking points to a new level. Each day there are 1 or 2 phrases on each topic, and often a list of key words. KJP hits those over and over in her "responses" like a constipated automatron trying to squeeze out a rusty turd.
3. Who is running things? No one knows. Read below for a clue.

Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at September 29, 2022 08:20 PM (NoZWd)

84 Costume store, the FBI Costume and the Chinese spy Costume look just very like each other.

Posted by: humphreyrobot at September 29, 2022 08:20 PM (FGZ2R)

85 chunk 2

First, let me explain A/B testing in case you all don't know.

For example, let's say you are king of a small domain of coffee-land and you want to advertise. You buy a spot on the HQ and have a marketing guy work with a graphics artist to come up with something. But instead of coming up with one design, you have them make 10 and you use them randomly for each page view.

On a typical day AOS front page gets (let's say) 10M views so each version gets 1M. This gives you hard data and you toss out the losers and pick the ones that get the positive response (clicks.) Repeat as quickly as the designers can come up with new ideas, only now they start to learn what works and what doesn't in nearly real time: Which fonts, which colors, which slogans, etc.

Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at September 29, 2022 08:20 PM (NoZWd)

86 I haven't been this scared since my doctor cracked a joke about losing his ring up there somewhere.

Posted by: AlaBAMA at September 29, 2022 08:21 PM (G0bXQ)

87 chunk 3

If you were a big kingdom you would have AI generate the copy itself. AI can learn quicker and can detect patterns across broad data sets and figure out complex relationships like which colors work at what time of day, or for what products. I am keeping my example simple and saying colors and fonts but in reality on today's internet AI is used to pick headlines, text, type of promotion,.. just about every decision where human psychology is a factor.

The history of this goes back to early store marketing with pioneers such as F. W. Woolworth and his five and dime stores. He understood how to turn "views" or walk-by traffic into sales. He knew where to place the bargain rack (out front, almost in the doorway to entice people to transition from window shopping to shopping.) He leveraged that art into building the world's tallest building at that time.

Supermarkets took it to a new level. Malls too. Every square inch is engineered to turn views into sales. It is a psychological science to manipulate and control.

Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at September 29, 2022 08:21 PM (NoZWd)

88 chunk 4
Casinos and their slot machine manufacturers elevated this science even further - they pay out enough to keep you playing and make the game addictive.

Social media quickly jumped on that science to make their platforms addictive and now they have AI helping with design.

It is a limited technique, but ideally suited for political messaging. Have a team of copy writers and AI pumping out sound bites and have the A/B test run on any large platform - facebook, google, yahoo, reddit,... whatever. Count the clicks and hone. In an hour at any time of day you can have the perfect message to own the news cycle.

Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at September 29, 2022 08:21 PM (NoZWd)

89 Although he probably could have saved the freezer space. I bet peeps could survive a nuclear war.
Posted by: bluebell

HA! As if they would go bad.

Posted by: Tonypete at September 29, 2022 08:22 PM (LsEU/)

90 chunk 5
With the explanation out of the way, I think it is exactly what is happening. The administration is running a 24hr. A/B testing lab using the help of Big Tech to hone each message. Every issue is run through the machine to figure out how to respond. This seems obvious to me judging from the output we see each day from KJP.

But I think it goes further and doesn't just explain the messaging, but the message:

The main problem is that to A/B test you need a population to sample with the different options. This is not as easy as it seems since our social media landscape is so fragmented that it is no longer easy to find "the average public." Facebook may be the broadest population but even there you have to make choices, do you want to consider the views of MAGA supporters? Christians? Gun owners? This is not like polling where you try ("try") to get a representative sample, but it is much more targeted and you want to appeal to people who are likely to support you in the first place. You only want to appeal to the 51% necessary to win (assuming you bother counting the actual votes this time.)

Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at September 29, 2022 08:22 PM (NoZWd)

91 chunk 6 (The Final Chunk)
This results in two problems:
(1) You toss out 49% of the country as "outside the mainstream" and ignore them, and
(2) Your message becomes centered on your supporters moving it further extreme with each iteration.

And I think that is exactly what is happening. Not only are they running the messaging through the A/B lab, but they are running the POLICY decisions through the A/B lab to figure out what to do.

And that is my suspicion - The A/B team is running the administration.

Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at September 29, 2022 08:22 PM (NoZWd)

92 I think that the people running the country are in a total bubble, where they are never exposed to a contrary opinion. If they are running A/B, it would be for the purpose of propaganda.

Posted by: Notsothoreau - move forward at September 29, 2022 08:24 PM (5HBd1)

94 I read all your chunks, Gentlemen. Very interesting. Could be, but I have to say KJP is just not very bright and she seems to get stuck on one phrase and repeat it over and over because she doesn't know what else to say. Maybe it's on purpose, though.

Posted by: bluebell at September 29, 2022 08:25 PM (aeePL)

The letter to the FTC reads: "Given Amazon’s record of infringing on consumers’ privacy, and their ongoing history of anticompetitive mergers to increase their monopoly power, the FTC should use its authority to oppose the Amazon – iRobot transaction."

"Rather than compete in a fair marketplace on its own merits, Amazon is following a familiar anticompetitive playbook: leveraging its massive market share and access to capital to buy or suppress popular products," it continues.

The Senator later told Axios: "I have serious concerns about the Amazon-iRobot deal — dominant companies like Amazon shouldn’t be allowed to just buy their way out of competing. The FTC should oppose this proposed merger to protect competition, lower consumer prices, and rein in Amazon’s well-documented anticompetitive activities."

Yes, a lot can be explained by incompetence but I think there is more going on.

When I got transferred to Overland Park, KS I went in to change my Oregon registered SUV to KS. Because Oregon doesn't have an excise tax on vehicles (or any other tax), Kansas said I needed to pay Kansas excise tax. After a hardy F U to the clerk, I called Oregon DMV and explained my situation. They sent me and the Kansas DMV a letter stating that I was TDY in Kansas ( which was the truth, I only planned maybe 18 months).

Never heard a peep again about registering in Kansas. I eventually did so in New Hampshire about 18 months later.

178 So a priest is driving along, swerving a bit and gets pulled over. The officer asks him 'Have you had anything to drink tonight, Father?' To which the priest replies 'only water.' The officer then points out a empty bottle of wine in the passenger seat, the priest then shouts 'Jesus Christ! He's done it again!'

Posted by: JackStraw

Mebbe pedantic, but it's all fascism, international or otherwise. A system that claim the People will own everything and rule always devolves into the State owning everything and a select few become the State.

In an exaggerated sense, true communism has never been tried because it doesn't work. Just as true anarchy can't either. It reverts to a form of technocratic feudalism always. The only difference is how many deaths via starvation.

please remember to immediately cancel and surrender your Oregon driver's license, since if you don't the Oregon DOR will consider you a resident and tax you on anything you earned in your new state.
Make sure your current employer changes your taxing status and sends the withholding to the right state so you don't get hit for back taxes and penalties.

It can get really confusing to try to fix it afterwards. Trust me on this.

It is made worse because Oregon DMV has a new database the workers call LUCIFER and the DOR is now implementing its twelfth version of the new database system

That was it. Tomorrow just another sunny day in SW FL.

But the downtown businesses, restaurants and shops, all just a few feet above sea level, must have all gotten soggy. I wonder how quickly they can get dried out and fixed back up.

The dry-out contractors are gonna make a fortune. The come in wearing haz mat suits, chop off all the sheetrock above where the waterline was, set up a few tons of dryer machines, wait, then walk away with the gear when it's dry.
