Top Story

  • Intel's high-end Arc A770 graphics card is coming October 5. (Tom's Hardware)

On the one hand, any competition for Nvidia and AMD in this space is welcome.

On the other hand, Intel's high-end card is expected to compete with the RTX 3060 or possibly the 3060 Ti, which are low to mid-range cards.

And on the third hand, Intel's dedication to dedicated graphics is dubious, and the entire venture could be dead in two years.

We'll see how they go in the benchmarks, and if the drivers have improved in the past few weeks, because last time the tech sites took a look the driver situation was a disaster.

  • Bae case arrives tomorrow. It actually arrived last Friday but I was otherwise occupied at that precise moment and it went away again. Time to camp out in the living room all day where I can see the courier van approaching.

Also, StarTrack? Fix your website. It's one thing to not be able to schedule a redelivery because there's a glitch somewhere, but that took me to the contact form, and that also glitched out... And took me to the contact form.

At least your call center is reasonably efficient.

Tech News

  • The low-end Ryzen 7000 chips - the six core 7600X and the eight core 7700X - are also a big improvement over their respective predecessors. (WCCFTech)

Across multiple benchmarks - including tasks that take advantage of AVX512 - the 7600X averages 48% faster than the 5600X. Meanwhile the 7700X averages 39% faster than the 5800X. And there will likely be a faster 7800X eight core model in the near future.

AMD's implementation of AVX512 is halved but not half-baked. It works by using the existing 256-bit hardware twice, but supports the more advanced AVX512 instruction set. The result is 85% better average performance on code that can take advantage of the new instructions, without the cost in die size and power consumption that comes from a full 512-bit floating point unit.

  • JMAP is IMAP but sane. (Unencumbered By Facts)

Which is probably a death sentence on the internet.

IMAP is one of the three main email protocols (SMTP for sending, and POP and IMAP for receiving.) JMAP modernises it by running over HTTPS and using JSON as the data format.

While JSON isn't perfect, the early internet protocols (including HTTP itself) are all text based and each needs its own dedicated parser, and there's a long history of subtle bugs in those parsers leading to disaster.

Every programming language in the world can read JSON data, and the format is simple enough and universal enough that most of the horrible bugs have already happened to someone else.

This makes it much easier to built a reliable email client, just leaving the problem that the big email providers make it almost impossible to deliver email to anyone anymore.

  • 58 bytes of CSS to make your web pages look great everywhere, or at least not terrible in most places, probably. (GitHub)

A few variations are provided taking the total payload as high as 200 bytes.

Disclaimer: 200 bytes of CSS should be enough for everybody.

6 Seeing the news they are going to go completely with computer generated James Earl Jones over real James Earl Jones. On the one hand, he is over 90, I think. On the other, it just seems wrong. On the other, other hand, this would not be such a big deal if they could just come up with another iconic character.

Modern media is so... scavenger like. Remember 20 years ago how we were complaining about reboots of classic properties like Addams Family and Beverly Hillbillies? Yeah, at least back then we till had SOME new properties like Bourne (not a fav of mine, but at least it was different.) Creative Bankruptcy is not a good sign.

That this arrest took place in the politically contested state of Pennsylvania is not likely a coincidence.

Yeah, but it's stupid. We already know that the epicenter of (D) votes is Philly - who always outperform *cough* fraud *cough*. Stir up the 'burbs and the 99.9% of the land area of the state which is not Philly and you may not like the result.

Same here -- well, yesterday. TheJamesMadison mentioned House By the River, so I played it on YooToob last night. 38 I hate rollicking theaters. I like the quiet when I am trying to enjoy a movie. If they need 'rollicking' it makes me think the movie is shit and they need to one set the tone (which the movie is supposed to do on it's own) and also do not trust that you can watch the movie in a vacuum and actually enjoy it.

82 As previously reported, the feds seized $86 million in cash, precious metals and family heirlooms stored in about 800 safe deposit boxes in Los Angeles in spring 2021.

A class-action lawsuit claimed the FBI “exceeded the search warrant approved by the court” when it raided storage provider, US Private Vaults (USPV) and snooped through the contents of the safe deposit boxes.

I have read the warrant: 1) Can look and Count contents. 2) No touch or removal of valuables or collectibles, 3) No confiscation of moneys.

I would check with WattsUpWithThat, but I am pretty sure the global temperature - such that it can even be estimated at all - has gone up closer to 0.0012 degrees, not 1.2 degrees. Yup. The "climate change" activists have been lying about it for decades. But their lies are used as the basis for every economy-crippling energy policy in every Western nation and every corporation (i.e. energy companies, auto companies, etc.).

Just like they did with the Plandemic. Did not matter that everything regarding the Plandemic -- masks, lockdowns, social distancing, "vaccines" -- was a lie. All of the lies were used as the basis of every economy-crippling and life-destroying policies put in place by governments and corporations worldwide.

138 Facebook users sue Meta, accusing the company of tracking on iOS through a loophole

Apple’s major privacy update to iOS last year made it much more difficult for apps to track user behavior beyond their own borders, but a new lawsuit alleges that Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta kept snooping through a workaround.

The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and embedded below, alleges that Meta evaded Apple’s new restrictions by monitoring users through Facebook’s in-app browser, which opens links within the app. The proposed class-action lawsuit, first reported by Bloomberg, could allow anyone affected to sign on, which in Facebook’s case might mean hundreds of millions of U.S. users.

In the lawsuit, a pair of Facebook users allege that Meta is not only violating Apple’s policies, but breaking privacy laws at the state and federal level, including the Wiretap Act, which made it illegal to intercept electronic communications without consent. Another similar complaint (Mitchell v. Meta Platforms Inc.) was filed last week.
