A Music Thread: Rock Opera And Boom Boom!

The internet, social media, amazing access to pretty much the sum total of human achievement and incredible digital storage has made switching to another genre or album or song effortless.

And thoughtless too, which I think is too bad. I find myself switching stations or tracks or streams after just a few seconds when I don't like the first notes of whatever is playing. That is okay if I recognize the music and I know it, but what about new stuff that isn't immediately appealing? Am I missing out on incredible music just because I have the attention span of a gnat?

Yes, I went through a "Guided by Voices" phase. Why do you ask?

The Who's "Tommy" was the first album I heard that made sense to me as something besides a random collection of songs. The movie wasn't bad either, especially going into the city to see it without adult supervision!

Murray Perahia plays Beethoven Piano concerto No 5, called "The Emperor" for sort of mysterious reasons. Old Ludwig was no fan of Napoleon, so he certainly didn't call it that. But whatever it's called, it is an absolutely magnificent work, especially when done by one of the greatest pianists in history!

46 Off topic, but some dreams I have intergalactic travel, and can move around far past the Earth. I love those dreams, they are quite unique, but also have their own geography, so when I do have them I always know where I am, in that peculiar Dream Geography.
Space stations, galaxies.
I mentioned it to The Kid today and she was quite shocked, had no idea I'd had these kinds of dreams since I was a little kid.
In those dreams the Star Systems are very amazing and quite beautiful. Sometimes there are 'Stations' but they are just points, there are no super-Asimov Real Science, after all, it's My dream.
I don't ask for them, would never, but when they happen they are always super fun and I'm always loathe to wake up, and return from The Stars.
Usually The Cat wakes me up, "Get your head out of the clouds and feed me, God Damn it!"

It had some catchy tunes and scantily clad, busty babes. I made sure to watch whenever it came on. Told the folks it was 'culture'. Hey, it's a legit musical!

78 I'm a little bit of an opera nerd. JJ even accused me of being a Frasier Crane (with a smiley emoji). There's a production of Le Nozzi di Figaro by Britain's Garsington Opera Company. It comes and goes on YouTube, depending on the opera season. The whole cast is great, superb acting in addition to singing. Jennifer France is the cutest Susanna ever. Give it a look if you can.

84 "Tommy" holds a uniquely pivotal role in rock history. I think it's fair to say that The Who of the 60's was good, but didn't stand out much from any of the other English groups that were making a name for themselves at the time, such as the Yardbirds, the Animals, the Kinks, and many others. All good groups, of course Then they took a year off to write a Rock Opera, and "Tommy" came out - unlike anything that had been done by anyone else. Groundbreaking.

and that wasn't the end of it - it wasn't clear where they would go after that, until they came out with the seminal album "Who's Next" and I guarantee everyone reading is likely familiar with every song on that album, whether you know that's the source or not. It wasn't just a great album - coming when it did, it marked the change from the folk/pop rock roots of the 60's and with it's style set the tone for the Stadium Rock of the 70's, which every major group jumped on. And it started wtih Tommy.

90 @24 JT -A humbucker is a type of guitar pickup typically seen on a Gibson Les Paul, SG that has two coils in which one cancels out noise/hum hence "humbucker" from electric, radio static noise near the guitar. Pickups "pickup" the vibration of the string. Single coil pickups are common to the Fender Stratocaster, Telecaster. Single coils tend to be noisy and pick up static though technology has advanced and helped eliminate or reduce it for single coil pups.

93 Romeo13, I guess we were in different timeframes. Everyone I knew took Rocky Horror as a guide to dress and behavior. Bowie is an interesting subject. My friends back then dragged me to 2 live shows. Never saw any appeal. As young and ridiculous as I was, at least I wasn’t a Bowie fan. Still have friends who’d hate hearing that, LOL.

106 The thing about Rocky Horror was that regardless of what anyone thought about the content, the music itself was good and singable, unlike anything that's been made in the last 20 years or so. (I would take Rocky Horror's musical score over that hip hop Hamilton crap any day)

And it has fun with lots of styles - for example "Hot Patootie Bless my Soul" done by Meatloaf is a hilarious, and excellent take on the 50's be bop style.

(a window into how nuts I was as a youth) Background: I had seen James Bond kill a snake by turning an aerosol can into an impromptu flamethrower, so I experimented a lot. Turned out most things don't work, some things likes spray paint are just too dangerous, but Lysal of the day amazingly was perfect, and would make a beautiful torch.

So I'd been a couple times with friends, and decided it was time to impress everyone. I knew that everyone was pulling out their lighters when they sang "There's a light..." so I sat in the very front row, where everyone could see me, and when "there's a Light..." came on I pulled my lysol can out from under my coat and made a 3' tall burning torch over my head. Most everyone gasped, some screamed, staff was not amused. I was quickly and ignominiously thrown out of the theater and told never to return.

There is apparently a style of country music now called "bro country" which sounds like rap with a little twang to it. been around for a few years now, and like any other rap, it sucks mightily. The "classic" country we all know and love still exists in the "alt country" genre, which gets little airplay on so-called "country" stations. But OTA radio itself sucks mightily, too.

For instance, my brother says Judas Priest's "British Steel" is a concept album about alienation, individuality, and the threat of technology. I think it's a great album.

For me it's the pinnacle for them, before they decided they needed to be thought of as rock and rollers.

The heart and soul of the band, IMHO, were Bernie Leadon and Randy Meissner.

Bernie's virtuosity, and the fact that I believe the band dropped using a banjo after he left, creating a hole in the fabric of their musical roots. Listen to Take it Easy with Bernie's Banjo, and then listen to a later version without it...very sterile.

Randy's vocals are unmatched...fuckin' Timothy B Schmidt...carpet bagger. He followed Randy from Poco to the Eagles, and I have a bit of a hard on for him.

Anyway those two guys, while not the headliners that Henley and Frey were, constituted what to me was the sound of The Eagles...and thus the heart.

And it also explains why Garrett has ghosted the PNW MoMe for three years and running. She was past the peak of her years, starting as a guitar playing accompany for her Mom’s Gospel show, I think in the 20’s. I think she was the first female rock and roller, and its a shame she doesn’t get more recognition in the history of things musical.

253 118 I was one of the few people who got kicked out of a Rocky Horror show for doing something too extreme. (a window into how nuts I was as a youth) Background: I had seen James Bond kill a snake by turning an aerosol can into an impromptu flamethrower, so I experimented a lot. Turned out most things don't work, some things likes spray paint are just too dangerous, but Lysal of the day amazingly was perfect, and would make a beautiful torch.

Knees and hips, dictate a lot of rest stops to stretch and walk. Add to that, that I don't want to drive in the dark. Also, my constitution being what it is, precludes a quick getaway in the AM.

So I'm driving 7-8 hours a day at max...

I drove from Calgary to Portland, non-stop, in about 18 hours one year, with a non-driving friend riding shotgun. And I had just gotten back from a well in the Peace River country. I don't know how I did it.

E 350 with 7.3, pulling a 20 ft wells cargo enclosed trailer

would leave at 4 am so not to catch NYC traffic

usually drive to Knoxville and then get up and make it into Dallas, easy, no problem

once I took an employee but he drove me nuts. and he got us pulled over in TN
