Time for our ancient order to celebrate the marching of the memes. Lets start with a classic from the ancient texts. Truth hammer
Inflation I know tonight is supposed to be meme night, but I thought I'd put this here regardless. I was going to put it in last night's ONT, but yesterday I spent a couple of hours painting the football field for Little's homecoming game tonight. (The school requires students and parents to do a certain number of “volunteer” community service hours each year. I like the concept, but I snicker at the “volunteer” part. Sure, you can buy your way out of it, but at $50/hr I'll just do the service. Truthfully, I enjoy it, because I “volunteer” to do things where I would be anyway. I get most of my hours by setting up and tearing down the inflatable tunnel that the kids run out of at the beginning of the game and after halftime) Since it's homecoming, I spent most of the time painting the school logo at midfield, which strained the tendons in my forearm. I didn't feel much like typing last night when writing the ONT. Anyhow, we're all dealing with the inflation caused by our government's insane spending policies, I thought I'd solicit tips on how y'all are stretching your dollars. I'll share a few that I use WRT food. First, each year I buy a half of a cow. Got a local rancher who provides them, butchered to your specifications and vacuum sealed. Nice guy, you can even come out and meet your cow before it heads off to the abattoir. For $8-900 bucks I get enough beef to last damn near a year. This requires a freezer to store the meat in, but I have one of those. Two, actually, along with two more attached to refrigerators. One is a 24 CF commercial freezer that I bought a while back, it cost a pretty penny, but the other is a 12CF chest freezer I picked up on Facebook marketplace for like $100. Second, I watch the local grocery store's manager specials on meat like a hawk. It's the first place I go when I hit the grocery store. Often it's empty, but when it's not I pounce. When packages of meat get within a day of their expiration date, the butcher marks them down 60%. If it's something I eat, I usually buy it. Yesterday there were two packages of 14 chicken legs on sale for about $3.50 each, and four 1lb pork loins for about $2.50. I bought them all. Brought them home and vacuum sealed them into meal size packages and into the freezer they go. Meat for 8 meals for the family – plus leftovers, lunch! - for $17. Not bad at all. Third, I check the weekly flier for specials and stock up. I budget $20/week for this. The idea is to build a supply of staples that you can restock one at a time as you use them. Usually this is canned stuff. Last week I got 20 cans of corn for $.69 each. I converted an extra coat closet into a pantry. I date the cans and stick them in there. When I use one, I replace it, back to front so the stock gets rotated. I bought the large stockpile at a good price, as long as I replace it one at a time as I use it, even if I can't find $.69 cans, the weekly bite is manageable. So, that's it for now. What have you got to add? Howdy I want my baby back, baby back, baby back ribs

Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart
He was a legend, and was in China vs Vinegar Joe Stilwell. (He was entoute to China when his plane crashed off of Italy. He swam a ways to shore. Italy was where he escaped a POW camp, with some prominent help (like the aide de camp to General O'Conner.) Between WWI and WWII he was living on an estate gifted him by Poland. He hunted every day. Real oddity: He married an attractive noblewoman, fathered two daughters, and did not mention them at all in his autobiography. Posted by: NaCly Dog (u82oZ) at September 23, 2022 10:15 PM (u82oZ) 43

California strikes again! If you thought that the FAA regulated air travel, think again - the correct answer is the FAA and the State of California.
Back in 2016, the flight attendants for now-defunct Virgin America argued that California-based flight attendants should be covered by a California law mandating that employees get a short break once every x hours, and a meal break once every y hours. In flight. A California judge agreed with them. The slight problem with this is that the FAA mandates minimum staffing levels on aircraft of people who are "on duty". If flight attendants get mandatory breaks, they aren't "on duty", so the airplane has to have an extra flight attendant to cover for people taking breaks. Well, this wound through the courts, and the US Supreme Court said they wouldn't hear the case, and you'll never guess what happened next! American Airlines eliminated its San Francisco flight attendant base, and announced that their LA base was "full", so if you want to keep working, you'll have to move out of California. There has been much wailing and gnashing of teeth by the SF-based attendants. Posted by: The ARC of History! at September 23, 2022 10:43 PM (I2/tG) 153

Reason for inflation? Total government spending all levels? $9.32 Trillion dollars (Fed, State, Local).
GDP? $25 Trillion.... Meaning 37% of total GDP is JUST GOVERNMENT WHICH PRODUCES NO GOODS NOR SERVICES. Government, does not 'make' anything. They do not produce goods. In fact, much of that money is spent on making it HARDER to make goods. Now, not saying all government is bad... but unless you understand how large and intrusive the government is... you can't understand how its SPENDING, especially deficit spending, increases inflation. "necked down to .416" means a cartridge built for a projectile of nominal .500" diameter has been reduced to take a projectile of .416" diameter. Correspondingly narrower barrel, too. Mean, most likely, a faster-moving bullet with a flatter trajectory. Guessing here, but it sounds like a 1 moa target subtends one minute of angle at 4.4 miles, as seen by the shooter. We SPEND $9.2T on government as someone noted above...and they can't be bothered to stop robocallers. "Its too hard". Bullshit. If the government wanted to it would be trivial. I'd suggest making it (and a number of other things) a capital offense for a while. Watch the number of robocalls drop to zero right after the first person gets eaten by a shark with a laser on its head. I would suspect that GM would have used a standard type of speedo gear fitting in their line of transmissions, in the interest of making assembly-line work easier. I unscrewed the cable from the transmission today, and found a twisted-off stub of the core in the gear. It pulled out easily. Cable burned through and seized about a foot forward of the bottom end. I will pull the whole cable out of the car tomorrow, and see if I can make up a replacement. Coming back home, got in the country, sun went down, and I look and the truck says 60F. Then dropped to 59F. Had to roll the windows up. They're projecting 48F low early this morning. AOP, those splitters scare me, I can see myself wrapped around the splitting head, or getting lazy and sloppy and get beaten to death with my own hunk of stovewood.
it does look handy though, that one would be good for making fence posts and rails. Posted by: Kindltot at September 24, 2022 12:44 AM (xhaym) The nice thing about the auger is that it works more or less slowly, and you can direct it exactly to the spot you want to split. Talk about scary splitters; there is one in the Reynolds Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin that is a big flywheel, with one huge axe blade welded onto it, and the flywheel was driven by a flat belt from a tractor pulley. It had a split platen to place the wood upon, and when the blade came around, Whack! Weren't no stopping it. The Reynolds Alberta Museum is an amazing place to visit for anyone interested in old cars, trucks, airplanes, farm equipment, or household gadgets. I just say no to this home automation shit. Big Tech (and Big gov) want to control. It could be done right, all local control, and that might be something I would play around with. But take that stupid wifi garage door opener. Here's how it works. It has to connect to the cloud, some server farm. Now, you take out your smart phone and use the "app" (I hate this word) to command the door to open. What happens? Your phone, via cellular (or wifi if in range) connects to that server, and tells it you want to open the door. The server then connects to the opener unit and commands it to open. Sort of stupid, ain't it? And note the third party Big Brother is watching and noting everything going on. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at September 24, 2022 12:56 AM (Mzdiz) 438

All of these things, like the smart T-stats, all connect to the cloud/internet/company servers. All of them. The control loop has to go up to the internet and back. All of it, now. They put in one of those wifi garage door openers here. I told them I didn't want any of it, but that was all they could easily get. The wifi is disabled, and it will never connect to my network here via any means. They also put in a security system. That thing, well the power supply is disconnected and the battery disconnected. It would do wifi as well. I messed around with it, and soon thought about just ripping the control panel out of the wall. But it would've left a hole and Miley wouldn't have liked that. He was very lucky a sheriff's deputy showed up before he bled to death, and managed to put a tourniquet on and get him to the hospital to save his life. He sued the county because the deputy forgot to bring the leg along too. He lost. He did have a party trick, he would bet for drinks that he could stand flat on one foot and touch the ceiling with the other. He would then unbuckle his prosthetic leg and touch the bar's ceiling with it. Posted by: Kindltot at September 24, 2022 01:12 AM (xhaym) 467

Posted by: SMH at September 24, 2022 02:43 AM (1Srlr) ---- Cape to Cairo (or the reverse) is 3000 miles and has been a challenge for a long time. It has been done obviously by monoplane, but also by car, motorbike, bicycle and on foot. Lots of countries, mostly friendly people but with tribes, bandits and armies one can never know. Did anyone enjoy 463 and 497, the cat funnies?
Posted by: Ciampino at September 24, 2022 02:42 AM (qfLjt) The dracula one was funny. My brother had this one cat, an all black cat, and every time I brought a guitar there, and opened the case and pulled out the guitar it would jump into the case. The gibson cases have a strap that kept the lid from opening all the way, so it would jump in the case, pull the strap and the lid would close on it. I started calling it catula. lol Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at September 24, 2022 02:57 AM (VwHCD) 514

Coming out of my encounter with COOF that began Tuesday evening. Tested positive Wednesday morning. Treated it just like any other severe head cold -- isolation, rest, fluids. Tonight begins the great unsnottening of my head. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars at September 24, 2022 03:39 AM (pNxlR) 518

"First, each year I buy a half of a cow. Got a local rancher who provides them, butchered to your specifications and vacuum sealed. Nice guy, you can even come out and meet your cow before it heads off to the abattoir"

I am making $45 an hour working from home. I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning $10,500 a month by working on a laptop, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply.
