108 I like old time gun advertising, some of which have great art work. Smith and Wesson had one, showing a fly fisherman in waders, and a yuge bear, probably a grizzly crashing out of the woods with lunch on his mind. The sportsman is reaching for the Smith and Wesson, holstered on is hip. Unfortunately, this ad was for the K17 Masterpiece, .22 caliber.

The no-conscripts thing has been an issue from the outset, but isn't responsible for the main problem, which has been/is simply insufficient first-line forces of sufficient quality for the task, compounded by poor management and command.
I keep repeating it but it's basic and true: the Russian army as constituted in February was too small for the task (assuming no quick political settlement, which clearly was assumed), and could only be augmented by stripping other military regions of even more forces (some Far Eastern BTGs were involved at the start). Which wasn't done. Russian observers were openly discussing the mismatch of resources and missions almost from the start, at least from April. Of course there are quality and morale issues and command performance in addition, but actually what the Russians currently hold is pretty reasonable for the resources they've put into it. Putin isn't boxed in, and has never been crazy or unpredictable. VDH brings very little to some discussions.
And no the serious losses for the Russians have not been minority nationalities (the Russian/Soviet term and concept). The losses have been in the first-line BTGs, which are very blue-eyed. Peruse the announcements and photos of KIA, and funerals, which are tracked by some intrepid online observers. Names and faces aren't minorities. The big losses in Donetsk and Lugansk were disproportionately local militia ("allied forces" in Russian terminology and media), as they were/are the bulk of those involved. But they're "ethnic" Russians, which is kind of the point of the stupid antipathy between them and a lot of western Ukraine going back forever. There is lots of good and fairly direct information about what's going on, and with background and understanding some assessments can be made on certain things.
But you have to go get it yourself, and sift it yourself. Open-source intel (OSINT) has reached a pretty remarkable level in this case, thanks to commercial overhead imagery, the wonder of geolocation, the ubiquitous phone cameras on the Uke side, and the remarkable lack of opsec in Russian rear areas (phone camera imagery regularly posted online which is easily interpreted by expert observers). None of this tells you what Putin's thinking or what Zelensky's having for lunch, but it is aggregated by various observers so that one can in fact have a decent understanding of the day-to-day situation and map. I do Posted by: Long John Silver at September 23, 2022 09:59 PM (63Dwl) Heh. Streets are all torn up here. Had to walk across a plank to get into the ATM. A friend's wife was in there ahead of me, when she came out, I said "Aaaar!". She looked at me funny, and I said, "well, I have to talk like a pirate, I just walked the plank." She got the joke.
