Twitter Whistleblower's Revelations Are Even Worse Than Imagined

Zach Edwards went through the former head of cybersecurity at Twitter's revelations about the horrible situation at Twitter, and posted his findings on Twitter.

This Thread Reader roll summarizes his postings.

I'll quote his statements. For the actual references to the documents upon which he bases his statements, refer to the link.

I've gone through mudge's redacted whistleblower complaint and there are some really spicy sections that relate to ad tech + privacy + foreign intelligence... brief thread of what I think is most interesting (link to documents in tweet below)

First up... folks have known for awhile that tons of Chinese advertisers were/are buying Twitter ads... But no one had pieced it together that those Chinese advertisers would be using ***Twitter Custom Audiences to doxx VPN users who verified with real contact info...**

"Twitter executives opted to allow Twitter to become more dependent upon revenue coming from Chinese entities even though the Twitter service is blocked in China...."

It seems clear that Twitter is becoming "more dependent" on China.. via.. Twitter advertising. Uhh @Congress ??

If I understand this right -- and I probably don't -- the Chinese government flooded Twitter with fake ads which were not designed to advertise anything, but to merely tag anyone viewing them with tracking cookies. They hit users with so many tracking cookies that they were able to pierce the anonymity of Chinese Twitter users accessing the platform through a VPN -- and punish them, obviously. They weren't evading China's ban on Twitter use and posting on Twitter to say supportive things about the Chinese communist government, after all.

Twitter was warned China was doing this and didn't care-- they just accepted more ad-buys from China, because they wanted that filthy money. They didn't care that they were helping the Chinese communists identify, locate, and imprison (or kill) dissidents.

"After Chinese entities paid money to Twitter, there were concerns within Twitter that the information the Chinese entities could receive would allow them to identify and learn sensitive information about Chinese users who successfully circumvented the block..."

I would show this in a native twitter ads interface but I'm banned from twitter ads for unknown / probably doing weird stuff reasons. But Twitter's Custom audiences can be built with *emails* (historically phone numbers too) + MobileIDs == DOX risks

link

If the Chinese entities had specific lists of people to dox, and had their protonmail emails or androidIDs, they could load those up into twitter ads campaigns w/ custom audiences filled w/ bad data, so that you "accidently" only target 1 person or a small group. == DOXX city

And what Mudge is describing is a common Doxxing scenario -- if you let someone spin up countless custom audience segments, upload countless variations of the same data, don't police them doing weird ass shit with their campaigns, and don't care who pays those bills? DOXX CITY

"...the Chinese entities could receive would allow them to identify and learn sensitive information about Chinese users who successfully circumvented the block, and other users around the world."

**the Chinese entities uploaded Custom Ad Lists w/ non-Chinese data**

So they can do it to any user, anywhere, not just to Chinee dissidents.

Do you understand what it means if Twitter isn't policing Chinese entities who run content ad farms from uploading custom audiences with data from people all over the world? And if Twitter lets them run ads with that data? Doxx city Doxx Doxx city

Twitter apparently used their cookies for "all purposes" (security cookies used for advertising) ++ once told by the French CNIL to change this, they kept it on purposefully for another month "in order to extract maximum profit from French users before rolling out the fix."

"Twitter employees were repeatedly found to be intentionally installing spyware on their work computers at the request of external organizations. Twitter learned of this several times only by accident, or because of employee self-reporting."

Which external orgs????

Interesting process to redact an external audit so that you can't be held accountable to the findings:

"Twitter counsel explicitly told Mudge that this was intended to hide the findings and prevent them from becoming known internally or externally"

"Twitter maintains a list of hateful terms and slurs that cannot be used for ad targeting. But Mudge learned that the list was not "stemming" properly, meaning that even minor variations on slurs were able to be used for targeting for an unknown period..."

uhh who used those??

That was confusing. I think they mean that Twitter supposedly doesn't allow advertisers to serve ads based on what racial slurs a user uses -- so that you can't target for racism -- but they either deliberately or negligently implemented the code stopping this poorly, so that you can, in fact, buy ads specifically targeting people using racial slurs.

This is... interesting. And alarming.

"...The Indian government forced Twitter to hire specific individual(s) who were government agents... it was believed by the executive team that the Indian government had succeeded in placing agents on the company payroll..."

So Indian spies at Twitter, huh? neat.

Agarwal, huh?

Ending this thread w/ :

"Shortly before Mudge was [REDACTED] terminated, Twitter received specific information from a U.S. government source that one or more particular company employees were working on behalf of another particular foreign intelligence agency."

g'night, goodluck!

Clicking on the ad isn't the issue, I don't think. Just downloading the tagged ad onto your device allows the govt to track where the ads are going and who is viewing them (based on IP registrations and whatnot). VPNs I guess are meant to try and foil this to an extent, but the tracking cookies can still report back to their Master Control Program.

48 Twitter ads are notorious for not being very lucrative -- that is, they get very few through clicks and are not worth the prices Twitter charges for them. That's not my opinion, its proven by multiple studies and analysis. But that doesn't stop idiot companies from buying ads there.

I mean none of this really surprises us does it? That Twitter is coopted by Chinese spies, is gathering user data to use, is ripping off people, etc? I mean a recent study showed that 60% of Internet traffic is non-human: bots, spiders, programs gathering info, etc.

97 Ace didn't quote this part, but it reveals just how incredibly poorly Twatter is run.

"Twitter employees were repeatedly found to be intentionally installing spyware on their work computers at the request of external organizations. Twitter learned of this several times only by accident, or because of employee self-reporting. ... in addition to a large portion of the employee computers having software updates disabled, system firewalls turned off, and remote desktop enabled for non-approved purposes..."

All of these things can be controlled by network administrators properly setting up group policy. Microsoft has basic certification processes that, upon completion, you would know how to make it so you can't disable updates, can't turn off your firewall, and makes it so you can't turn your computer into a RDP endpoint.

Besides being shitbags, these people are COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT at basic security practices that are stock standard in the industry.

99 Something stinks here. Twitter, Facebook, Google, etc. are instruments of the state, more or less. Yet, our government allows China to infiltrate them and not only go after their own citizens but spy on Americans. I presume to pass on relevant information on "bad actors" to the authorities here.

Yet, when Elon Musk made overtures to buy Twitter the state's first impulse was to create its own "Disinformation Governance Board," again, presumably to fill the gap in citizen monitoring and whatnot.

There's more to this story...

Twitter records the details of your interaction with you and yes you could theoretically be doxxed if a government agency was interested in doing so. This was also true of any webpage with facebook icons on them--the icons had phone home scripts running just from accessing a page with those on it. I suspect Google or Twitter do the same thing with their icons and so on.

For criminals, it is less likely that they would take the trouble unless you are a billionaire or something because the costs of doxxing you would exceed the value extracted. Criminals are lazy and pick the low hanging fruit first.

Yeah, but at least that is opted in. You choose to use Gmail, you choose to accept that Google will use your data. That sucks and it's unfair and opaque, but you did technically agree to it by subscribing to their services.

The far more profound problem is the non-users. The social media "buttons" on websites set a cookie, and that cookie gets a unique identifier. The tracking is now in place. Even if you are not - and never have been - a subscriber to those services, they have an increasingly rich dossier on you regardless. And Zuckerberg told the Senate that this did *not* happen and if you're not a member, it doesn't apply. That was a lie and that lie is trivial to prove - all you have to do is look at the cookies. It isn't exactly hidden.

As always, nothing happens. Lying to Congress is just good fun for all parties.

I cannot recall who it was now but there was one of those "webring" companies that tried to get people to sign a terms of agreement that said everything hosted on any page that they connected to belonged to them.

Another huge flaw in the "if you're not a subscriber then it doesn't apply" argument. You don't even need to be a subscriber, they can still tag you (at least, they used to be able to). Essentially mission creep and budgets lead to everything being a threat. It is the same strangulation that the Stasi put on E. Germany only to see it collapse when the Wall came down. If you are intercepting everyone's mail, you cannot see the forest for the trees. Essentially, modern techo fascism involves targeting individuals and burning them like a magnifying glass can burn an ant. But, for every ant burned, the anthills are busily producing more and more. So, it is pretty much useless to kill off an anthill using a magnifying glass.

That is where you get the opposite reaction like Swallowell D (Cong) boasting that they would use nukes on the non compliers (fill in with tanks, jets, missiles, etc.). That is the kill them all solution which obviously does not work in a heterogeneous society. You do not spank a baby with a flamethrower.

You don't have to sign up for it yourself. If someone else has it and uses it on you they can figure out who you are with an analysis of the connections on that persons social media and cross referenced photos with DMV photo. Your birthdate, sex, zipcode. Will identify you with 99% certainty, and the facial recognition, done by a computer is the cherry on top of the sundae. 310 My wife's home feed is MSN when she logs in - which I see is really no different than logging into the DNC home website really.

She says oooh she gets the 'news' there, its not 'click' based advertising - which is true.

I have to tell her, over and over, yeah, they're not selling something YOU want, they're selling you something THEY want you to buy. It's not news - no one writing bylines at RawStory or the Guardian or Business Insider or Vox or theHill.com gives a flying fuck about the news...they have a script, and they had better follow it or they'll be selling CookiePuss ice cream cakes at Carville's tomorrow morning. And they know it.

That's all well and good for individual purposes, but I'm operating on the assumption their plans are for the billions of us collectively, not individually.

All you can control is yourself and your bailiwick and remind others that they too can play. No different really than religion--the only soul you can save is yourself--you can aid others but they have to make decisions for themselves.

313 We're at the stage where big brother is forming right before our eyes. So what are we going to do about it?

316 Really Twitter should just simply be shut down. This article only begins to address the national security threats there but also Facebook (see Alex Stamos), Google, Apple, and Microsoft. Enterprises should ask these questions about Salesforce, Workday, Oracle, and other SaaS providers who are similarly vulnerable to compromise.

There is an opening for SaaS that is run in America with zero foreign nationals on the team.
