New York Shit for Pants Jerry Nadler wins primary.

Rep. Jerry Nadler triumphed on Tuesday over his onetime ally Rep. Carolyn Maloney in a primary race that pitted the two incumbent Democrats against each other for control over a newly drawn congressional district.

Nadler, who under New York's outgoing congressional lines represented a district that hugged Manhattan's west side and continued into parts of Brooklyn, will become the Democratic Party nominee to embark on what will likely be a cruise-control ride to the November finish line in the 12th Congressional District after a double-digit victory over Maloney, according to the Associated Press.

Federal appeals court OK's absurdity.

In a split decision on Aug. 16, a three-judge panel of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that “gender dysphoria” is a protected class under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The court ruled that a male identifying as a female, named Kesha Williams, who was imprisoned in Fairfax County, Virginia, should be housed with the female inmates, even though he retains male body parts.

The prison has a policy that “male inmates shall be classified as such if they have male genitals,” and “female inmates shall be classified as such if they have female genitals.” That’s surprisingly sound for Fairfax County—certainly better than their schools—but it was too commonsensical for the court.

When is enough, enough? USA wants to continue its proxy war with Russia.

The Biden administration is set to roll out with another $3 billion in Ukraine defense aid, including funds to train and equip Ukrainian forces "to fight for years to come," according to US officials cited in the Associated Press.

Also, higher energy prices for years to come? higher food prices? greater scarcity? It appears precisely this is what US policy-makers and Pentagon planners are settling in for: "As Russia’s war on Ukraine drags on, U.S. security assistance is shifting to a longer-term campaign that will likely keep more American military troops in Europe into the future, including imminent plans to announce an additional roughly $3 billion in aid to train and equip Ukrainian forces to fight for years to come, U.S. officials said," according to the AP report.

We've seen some selective banking preferences here in the USA. Australia gets into the act. Banks shouldn't be woke.

Bank Australia has announced it will stop funding loans for new fossil-fuel-powered cars from 2025 onwards, reports The Guardian.

The company argues that denying loans for new fossil-fueled vehicles makes sense. It believes the move means it won't "lock customers into higher carbon emissions and increasingly expensive running costs." Given this year's sky-high fuel prices, that's understandable, even if things are now starting to ease temporarily.

Of course, new cars are expensive, and not everyone is buying in this sector of the market. Thus, the policy will only apply to new vehicles. The bank will still consider loans for pre-owned ICE-powered vehicles for some time to come.

Washington D.C., you wanted to be a Sanctuary City.

Now suck it up Buttercup.

For the second time, the Pentagon denied a request on Monday by Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser to activate the National Guard to assist with thousands of migrants who have been arriving in the nation's capital in recent months.

Bowser first asked for National Guard help last month, but it was rejected by the Pentagon on Aug. 4. She then sent another letter on Aug. 11, requesting that 150 National Guard troops be deployed to "help prevent a prolonged humanitarian crisis in our nation's capital resulting from the daily arrival of migrants."

Defense Department executive secretary Kelly Bulliner Holly wrote in a letter to Bowser on Monday that the D.C. National Guard is not trained to assist migrants and activation would lead to "diminished readiness" for the troops.

Actions? Consequences? Whostaa talkin' about?

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is expected to announce Wednesday at the White House that he will cancel $10,000 in federal student loans per borrower making $125,000 a year or less.

He is also expected to extend the federal student loan payment pause for several more months, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

Although Biden had previously said he would make an announcement on student debt cancelation by the end of the month, the White House has insisted that no final decision had been made yet.

“The President will have more to say on this before August 31," White House spokesman Abdullah Hasan said. "As a reminder, no one with a federally-held loan has had to pay a single dime in student loans since President Biden took office, and this Administration has already cancelled about $32 billion in debt for more than 1.6 million Americans — more than any Administration in history."

Speaking of government spending, it looks like France is loaded as well.

France’s government increased the size of the subsidy it offers to people who trade in their gas-powered cars for electric bikes to as much as €4,000 (approx. $3,976) per person, according to The Times. The money is meant to incentivize people to ditch their polluting modes of transportation in favor of cleaner, more environmentally friendly alternatives.

People who live in low-income households in low-emission urban zones that trade in their cars are eligible for the full €4,000 subsidy to put toward the purchase of an e-bike. (Traditional, non-motorized bikes also qualify for the incentive.) French citizens from higher income brackets can claim smaller subsidies.

Patron Assaulted Papa John's Worker With Metal Pizza Paddle Over Missing Toppings, Cops Charge

Incensed that his pizza did not include the requested toppings, a Maryland man allegedly assaulted a Papa John’s worker with a metal pizza paddle in an attack that ended with the employee stabbing the customer in the stomach with a “pizza spear,” according to police.

Investigators say that after purchasing a pizza Wednesday evening, Herbert Harris, 40, returned to a Papa John’s in Woodbridge, a community 20 miles outside Baltimore, to “complain that garlic sauce and pepperoncinis were not included with the pizza.”

Harris, cops say, argued about the missing Italian peppers and garlic sauce with Robert Klein, a 26-year-old Papa John’s employee. During the dispute, Harris went behind the counter and “began chasing Klein around the store, physically assaulting him with a metal pizza paddle,” according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

Why let a 'handicap' bog you down? Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

David Aguilar was surrounded by toys as a child, from the tiny ones inside Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs to Transformers robots, which he knew instinctively how to turn into vehicles, with no need for instructions. Most of all, he loved Lego. “With Lego you can build anything,” he says. “All you need are the pieces and you can build whatever you want.”

He built his first model of Titanic from them at the age of five — and then, “one day in his room”, just four years later, “he assembled an arm”, his father, Ferran, recalls. It was made from “a wire, a key chain, duct tape, parts of a robot and the most traditional Lego pieces”.

155 From the first link ("We call on materials scientists..."):

"Lithium-ion batteries are most famous for powering electric vehicles, which are set to account for up to 60 per cent of new car sales by 2030."

They say that so casually and matter of factly, and everyone hears it as maybe the most absurd thing that has been said out loud in years. But the people in NY and DC truly believe that all they have to do is say it. No one needs a truck, after all.

The interesting part is to ponder if they are telling the truth. If they *will* be 60% of new car sales by 2030 because cars won't be sold to people like they are now.

179 But when we think of extraction, we think of fossil fuels like coal and gas. Unfortunately, lithium also falls under the same umbrella, despite paving the way for an electric future.. Lithium can be described as the non-renewable mineral that makes renewable energy possible - often touted as the next oil.

Which is an outright lie. Hydrocarbons (aka "fossil fuels") can be pulled from the earth from a relatively small hole in the ground. I have dozens of wells around me, I can see one if I go out to the edge of my property. Lithium mining doesn't create any energy, it doesn't extract it or otherwise generate it. Lithium is an expensive way to store little bits of energy generated elsewhere.

There is no comparison.

229 From a thermal retention of heat (and cool) view, I'd think basements in Arizona would make sense. Kinda like building into caves. ... In Louisiana it is an issue due to the high water table, ... but idk .. the whole "earth sheltered housing" thang is interesting.

Still, cheap and efficient use of fossil fuels makes a lot of sense, when done cleanly. But efficiency tactics also make sense. Basements in most places are cheap extra space, and energy efficient.

I'm sure that country's government is just thrilled with her insinuation that they provided life-threatening accommodations to the Queen of England's great-grandchild.

The builders here (think tract homes) are usually trying to get in and out in as little time as possible to maximize their return. Digging holes for basements when there's no frostline to worry about cuts into that.

You can get a basement in a "custom" home, but you're going to pay a premium for it.

The hybrids will be interesting. Mercedes, not content with their AMG V8 twin turbos variants pulling 500+ HP, added electric motors to the drivetrain just to enhance the launch.

If it gets real bad, auto manufacturers can always tune a 4-cylinder to run highly optimized for a particular engine speed, and have it drive a generator powering electric motors at the wheels - same way a rail locomotive works.

That should provide a very satisfying launch and give good fuel economy too.

303 As I've said, Hybrids are compelling in that you can potentially get the best of all worlds, high HP, high torque, high fuel economy.

The main downside is it's heavy tech and the idea that 20 years from now you are going to be able to get the systems and components to fix your vehicle is laughable.
Posted by: Thomas Bender at August 23, 2022 11:10 PM (cjQC

Except when the battery packs need to be replaced. Hybrids make sense- it is a self contained system for both power generation. On the other hand, I do not think they are economical. Maybe scale would make a big difference, but you still have to dig all the minerals out of the ground and have the power to do so.

314 I live in a duplex on a hilly street. Basement runs the whole length and width of the house. Not sure if you'd call it a cellar because there's no interior access, just from the front and back. Anyways, the front of the basement is below grade but the back is at grade. (It doesn't slope since you have to walk down several steps in the front.) The basement is always cool, even on days when we've hit 100F (which has happened the last few years -- did that several times in 2020 and a lot of 90s). House I grew up in had a true, inside-accessible basement and it was chilly. During the Summer, I loved going to the pool in the morning then playing D&D all hot and muggy afternoon long.

A basement is underground shelter, but nevermind that cuz I got a short story that's related.

The year is 1999 and a guy I worked with was freaking about Y2K, so much so that he bought guns, pallets of ammo, hundreds of pounds of silver rounds, pallets of MRE's and he built a small space in his basement that was so insulated it could be heated and lit with a candle. Sounds nuts, right? Nothing happened and he was "stuck" with all this stuff.
He made out like a bandit on everything except the MREs, selling just enough silver when it peaked in 2010 to make back everything he spent on and still had more than half his silver.

Crazy? Like a fox. Maybe just lucky.

But yeah, basement are more a northern thang ... although those "Earthships" that go off grid are dug into the earth ... seems to me that the cooling of a basement would basically be free ... and cooling is the big cost ... but I guess people like to live in the natural light more than underground ... so northern climes cling more to their basements and their safe (from freezing) spaces.

There's nothing really wrong with hybrids. It's just an innovative power train that allows a relatively small gas engine to drive a car with the performance of a larger engine. Damned near every taxicab in Calgary is a Prius. Cab companies are all about economy of operation. And the battery lasts a long time because it is not deep-cycled.

I don't disagree. They're rejected because they still involve gas engines, though, which is hilarious. They're unpure. Impure, maybe? Doesn't matter. Nothing can burn fuel, no matter if it is better for the environment and population.

410 I saw a video, on YouTube, which was a short documentary about a guy who became an engineer by inventing prosthetic arms for his child.

He lives in a country with socialized medicine... I think it was the UK and it might have been Scotland but I'm not sure. There was some kind of screwup after his child was born and his child lost an arm. (I don't remember the details but I was certain that this wouldn't have happened at a US hospital.)

Under the health care system, the child would receive a prosthetic at no charge... someday, probably about age 19.

The father was convinced that it would be far better to get some kind of prosthetic, anything, while the child was as young as possible, so the child would grow up using two arms. He went into the kitchen and got a sponge and made a tube out of it, and put that over the stump of the arm of his baby child, and the child started using it to bat at the dangling baby toys.

The father then taught himself how to do 3D printing and started making ever-better arms. Eventually he became an engineer. A great, heartwarming story.

465 Student loan forgiveness should be taxed as a windfall profit. Because that's what it is.

Anyone who is having trouble managing student loans isn't going to be in a position to pay taxes on the forgiveness.

The sad joke here is while this is obviously an effort to pander to folks with a ton of student debt around their necks, it isn't really enough to help.

The actual solution here is to let the specific people who can't pay for whatever reason discharge it in bankruptcy like any other bad debt, with the usual credit rating penalties for them, and lesson learned by whatever fools lent them the money.

I haven't really used my marshalls in years. They were the shit back in the day, and I still have all mine, and 3 of them are tweaked out the wazoo, real fire breathers, but 1 trick ponys. I went on an amp rampage a few years back since a handful of amps finally rose from the shit storm of crappy amps. I think I ended up with 8 newer amps in a 2 year period. I kept finding nice clean used or barely ones in too cheap to pass up territory.

Wow, I sure hope I never end up talking to a counselor or psychiatrist or psychologist or whatever. Their solutions are mutilation, chemical sterility, killing yourself. It seems like desire to harm or kill oneself used to be the symptoms of problems these people were supposed to help you solve.

Well, I did do that, and found people who've never killed anybody. Then they tried to return me to a normalcy I'd never experienced.
When I told them that wasn't working, they drugged me.
You know, for people like me, KILL someone.
THEN talk to me.
Other than that, FUCK YOU.
Push it, I'll then kill you, because I'm used to it.
Dumb fucks.
Kill someone, then we'll talk.
Otherwise, there is no feelz.

Got to go back to work today after a very nice day off. The library author night was exactly the horror I'd envisioned. Bad streets, driving through shabby neighborhoods, hard to park, and the A/C was overwhelmed by the number of people. There was some food, but the topic (Sicilians and their food in the early 20th century) was not my interest.
