The Morning Report — 8/17/22

lizdicked.jpg

Good morning, kids. Well, it's a good day insofar as Liz-ard Cheney got her ass kicked in yesterday's primary by Trump-supported Harriet Hageman. Also, up in the Last Frontier, Sarah Palin has advanced in her bid for a House seat but unfortunately, the emu/Skeksis-looking hybrid Lisa "the Alaskan Snowblower" Murkowski won her primary.

UPDATE/CORRECTION: the HQ's polling and election guru Dave in FL states:

Murkowski didn't "win". It is a ranked choice jungle primary. Top 4 after ranking will advance to the general. Don't black pill this. Murkowski is not doing very well here and will need massive Democrat votes in the general to hold her seat. We won't know final results until after Sept 2nd.

I stand corrected.

But the Cheney drubbing sends a number of clear messages. Primarily, it's a good barometer that at the very least, the vast majority of those who vote Republican (the phraseology there is intentional) see her as the traitor and collaborator with those who actually committed actual insurrection in stealing the 2020 election and then creating the giant entrapment sting and process crime resulting in the J6 kangaroo court and show trial. In short, the myth the Left is attempting to sell the American people is not being swallowed. The other aspect of this is, of course, the fact that Hageman was backed to the hilt by Donald Trump. Get ready for the media post mortem which no doubt will range from "the victory is meaningless," to the invective of the late, grating Peter Jennings that "the electorate had a temper tantrum" all the way to "serious irregularities at the polls." Give me a break.

Look, it's only one House race, but on a symbolic level it sure is perhaps one of the most important of the entire primary season. Cheney is not just a nemesis of Trump and the MAGA movement. She was who the Democrats "groomed" as the alleged voice of reason, symbolic of the majority of Americans and most Republicans appalled at Trump and Trumpism. Myth status: exploded. Cheney represents everything wrong about post-war American government: cronyism, dynastic nepotism, elitist entitlement in the service of pursuing of policies that transformed society from a nation where the power was supposed to be vested as close to the individual as possible to one of an ever growing, ever more omnipotent and omnipresent central government — with her and her ilk as the warders, and us filthy ungrateful lumpenprole the inmates.

But, all that said, let's not kid ourselves that Liz-ard Cheney is finished or washed up. She'll be rewarded with everything from gigs on the propaganda house organs to book deals to seats on the corporate boards of the military industrial complex who could care less that American blood and treasure is sent off to the world's shit holes in stiletto fuck-me pumps and pregnancy flight suits so long as their balance sheets are solidly in the black. Just like dear old dad. Her oleaginous mien might be less evident on your TV screens going forward in the long term, unless of course there is an actual Trump show trial, but her and her kind are like radioactive alien herpes: there is no cure and the eruptions are both painful and happen when they're least convenient.

And speaking of the metastasizing, all-powerful State, that insane "Inflation Reduction Act" was signed into law by Pres. Sponge-Brain Shits-Pants yesterday, wasting 3/4 of Trillion dollars that we do not have on both destroying what's left of our industrial capacity and petrochemical sector in the name of "saving the planet," something the vast majority of Americans do not think is a problem at all, while super-sizing an already feral IRS to go after ordinary citizens.

An audit notice from the IRS is scary. Up to 87,000 more IRS agents in the “Inflation Reduction Act” President Joe Biden signed Tuesday is troubling. And the IRS stockpile of 4,600 guns and 5 million rounds of ammunition is downright unnerving.

How many of the new agents will be packing heat? Democrats won’t say.

The IRS arsenal of 4,600 guns includes 3,282 pistols, 621 shotguns, 539 rifles, 15 fully automatic weapons and four revolvers. It’s unclear who agents plan to shoot at. A recent IRS job posting says applicants must “be willing to use deadly force.”

Democrats voted in lockstep to take $80 billion from taxpayers to supersize the IRS. A possible 87,000 new agents are a force larger than the combined personnel on all 11 US aircraft carriers. Four times the number of Border Patrol agents. Enough to fill every seat in Madison Square Garden four times.

Why does the IRS have guns and play police officer? The agency got into the policing business in 1919 and over time became abusive, conducting armed raids on innocent small businesses exposed in 1997 and 1998 congressional hearings.

Democrats won’t tell you there are significant criminal-justice ramifications to giving the IRS this much money and power.

As inspector general reports detail, the IRS doesn’t respect your privacy or the concept of due process. Evidence-handling practices are abysmal. Handing the IRS a huge pile of cash won’t change the agency’s culture.

The IRS’s official government watchdog, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, has flagged severe problems with IRS gun management in numerous audits over the years. . .

. . . As the IRS deploys tens of thousands of new agents, expect fishing-expedition audits of small businesses. Corner stores, bodegas, barbershops and cash-intensive enterprises should be on alert because the agency has proven to be a bit slippery when approaching small-business owners.

A 2017 inspector general report, for example, detailed the ways in which IRS agents violated taxpayer rights and due process when investigating Americans for allegedly violating the $10,000 cash-reporting requirements. It seized assets before it even interviewed property owners. . .

. . . An audit can easily take two to three years and weigh heavily on a small company. Time, money, stress. America’s small businesses have been battered by politicians over the past three years. A fishing-expedition audit could mean lights out for some. With more agents, you’ll see more law-abiding small-business owners give up and write a check to settle an IRS bill they don’t legally owe, just to get the agency off their back. . .

. . . Biden and the Democrats say they’re simply targeting the rich and corporations. But there are only 700 or so billionaires. The rest of the country is you and me.

Yeah, I know it's from Grover Norquist but he's on the money here. The one thing that he does not say is the real reason for the supersizing and arming to the teeth of these pencil-pushers. Make no mistake; it's not about finding tax cheats. It's about silencing and intimidating the people into towing the junta line, and stepping on the neck of anyone who opposes them.

What happened at Mar-a-Lago, what happened to Roger Stone and Paul Manafort, what happened to Michael Flynn, what could have happened to the parents at the Loudon County school board meeting, the scores of hapless Americans still languishing as political prisoners in the Garland Archipelago in the wake of the J6 entrapment scam, and frankly what did happen to Ashli Babbitt and Roseanne Boyland is what is in store for all of us.

Take that to the bank.

2 Election round up.

I was too generous to Cheney, thinking she would get 35% of the vote. She didn't even get 30%. Possibly the worst performance by an incumbent in history.

Palin will win in AK.

Murkowski is not seeing the lead she should have in the early vote. She will very likely still advance to the general, but there is a larger than expected vote against her happening.

AK will literally take weeks to determine due to the ranked choice system.

Democrats were destroyed last night everywhere. MAGA turnout was extremely strong. Primary turnout is highly predictive of performance in the general. The results from AZ, MO, MI, WY, and AK should frighten Democrats.

18 What isn't normal, what is worrying, is the glee with which many in America celebrate each new step guaranteed to make larger and larger slices of the population stop believing in the system's legitimacy. Brought up from Tech Thread:

Wyoming allows anyone to switch parties up until the day before the primary, pretty sure a metric a$$ ton of democrats switched parties to vote for the lizard because there were only 4,500 votes in the democrat primary versus 113,000 on the republican side. That's extremely lopsided even in Wyoming.

Way back when, the IRS stored tax records on tape reels. In a local IRS location they somehow 'lost' some of the reels. Five years after the fact my business started getting dunning letters claiming a weekly tax payment wasn't made. The basement of the business got flooded where 'my side' of the records were stored and I had no proof. It went on for years. They finally 'took' the money from the corporate bank account.

So 87,000 more agents should scare the shit out of any person in business. More people equals more screw ups.

74 I foresee the big car manufacturers trying to outrun one another in a woke competition to kill production of their gas-fueled cars for electric. The avalanche is already starting, first with Ford, now Dodge. Maybe all the empty car lots who can't get any inventory on their lots is a hidden plan to make it all the harder to buy gas-powered vehicles altogether. What I hope happens is that they spend $millions making these things and nobody buys them. This is all woke driven. And I hope they reap their just rewards.

76 I read that article on the Krauts, electric heaters, and the power grid. While living in Erie, the boiler conked out. The landlord brought some electric space heaters over until the boiler could be fixed. This took about a week as the old monster needed replaced. My Penelec bill was pretty consistent, about $30-35 a month. Five days running that little heater maybe 12 hours a day doubled it for the month. So lets get a zillion cars plugged in.

This turns my stomach. And you can bet your bottom dollar it's the norm. Why is this allowed to happen? Each and every member of Congress should be required to disclose their personal financial worth each and every year they "serve." Like charity organizations are required to do.

Yea, FordMoCo is grifting off this bullshit. However they're also making it harder to buy an EV. Almost as if they're either not fully onboard with the program and are trying to;
1. Tank it

2. Not have to build many EV's

If Ford was truly on board with the EVangelicals they'd make them as easy to by as a F-150. But they're not. Perhaps they know the end goal is really no personal transportation.

It's not just that they waited over the weekend for this absolutely vital national security information, Trump had been out of office nearly two years. If the documents he had were so damn sensitive and urgent, why didn't the FBI and DOJ go after them a lot sooner -- like in January or February of 2021?

Letting the evil Trump retain those vitally important and highly urgent national security records for nearly two years was the height of malfeasance and irresponsibility by the DOJ!

-----------------------
Ike was no fool. Attempting to repeal Social Security would be a fools errand at the time on par with Bush II's social security reform.

Medicare also became embedded in a similar way. So, the only way you can even 'cut', not eliminate either of these programs is to essentially eliminate zero out all the agencies and return those functions to the states AND go back to the pre WWII defense posture and manning.

Congress would never go for that and so we will borrow and borrow, tax and tax, spend and spend until a) the US loses reserve currency status or b) we accelerate into hyperinflation where we default by making the currency worthless.

Think of your bank as a sub-agency of the IRS. Any money you deposit the IRS can see - not only see, but remove from your account, sitting at their desks. If you are depositing too much to your personal account, way outside of profits you report - well that's why they want more agents.

Given what's at stake here, and the fact that there was prior lying and criminal behavior by the government in the FISA courts, the SCOTUS should really intervene. They should reach down and pull the case up to them for review. It would be unprecedented, but this entire case is unprecedented.

We have a corrupt and senile POS president and a clearly unfit AG using a weaponized FBI and DOJ to target an ex-president, whom they repeatedly tried to take down during his presidency, using falsified affidavits in the FISA courts. These criminals are destroying Americans' faith in the justice system and turning our country into a banana republic (even the president of the Dominican Republic remarked the other day that if a similar raid had happened there, the U.S. and U.N. both would have condemned it).

Trump has been fighting these bastards for 6 straight years and doing it largely on his own. As far as I'm concerned he's earned the right to fight back in the way he sees best and while we might be wondering exactly why they did this I doubt he is. He knows what the documents say.

It's his ass personally on the line.

212 206 when things look too pessimistic, it's good to remember that in 2017, there were at least 50 House republicans that adamantly opposed Trump in everything he did, led by Paul Ryan. In the new Congress, there will only be 2 - and they are keeping their heads down and being very quiet about it. Newhouse and Valadao, and there's no guarantee that either of them will win their general races in November.

214 Yeah, I know it's from Grover Norquist but he's on the money here. The one thing that he does not say is the real reason for the supersizing and arming to the teeth of these pencil-pushers. Make no mistake; it's not about finding tax cheats. It's about silencing and intimidating the people into towing the junta line, and stepping on the neck of anyone who opposes them.
++++
It's both. You don't need 87,000 more people - more than doubling the size of the IRS - to selectively target subversives. They can do much of that with AI and "shadowban" them from society. They need more people to do it, but not *that* many more people.

I suspect the reason for the big workforce is, by and large, probably what they say it's for. There will be nice bonuses involved like more effectively suppressing subversives, but the core mission is to squeeze the middle class. The more of them that can be thrust into poverty, the better.

Yeah, the arithmetic blows that up.

Per the IRS itself, 1.8% of returns are for $400k or more. There were 154 million returns filed. 1.8% of 154 million is 2.77 million. With 87k new IRS agents, they could be assigned to those individuals at a 1:32 ratio - each new IRS employee would have 32 high-income individuals to manage. That's easy, even at government productivity levels. It would be absurd overstaffing.

That's not what these guys are for.

The practical goal was never to turn the GOP into Trump-clones in the space of a couple of years. It's a war of attrition that takes a very long time. Hell, it's arguable that we're still in some late phase of the Tea Party fight.

The GOP of 2007 and the GOP of 2022 are not remotely the same. Most of leadership from 07 is gone. The GOPe's host of loyal backbenchers were wiped out (by Ryan himself, which, in retrospect, is hilarious).

It's a slow grind that takes a long time and a lot of effort. Not every victory will be ours (Crenshaw is a pain, and if I lived in his district I wouldn't vote third party, I'd vote Democrat), but the overall direction of the GOP is obvious, and it's not towards a more W-like compassionate conservatism.

Now Liz Cheney is comparing herself to Abraham Lincoln. Seriously. She is talking about how Lincoln lost some elections before he eventually won. Cheney’s delusions of grandeur were too much for even Fox News which cut away from her speech when she discussed herself as in the mold of Lincoln. Side note, Never Trumpers already tried a group called THE LINCOLN PROJECT, which failed spectacularly when actual pedophilia scandals tore apart the organization.

286 Second look at abolishing the 17th Amendment?

Posted by: Divide by Zero
------------------
Waste of time. You might as well call a Convention of the States to propose a list of amendments which would be far easier than getting Congress to propose revoking the 17th.

The real story of the 17th is that by the time it passed, most states legislatures had delegated their powers to the people to pick senators via referenda anyway. Only a few still had the state legislatures involved. Illinois was one of those states during the Lincoln-Douglas debates. State legislatures picking senators broke down during the party system and often seats remained vacant if the legislatures did not agree on a candidate.

You want more responsive government--have voting done electronically from the home state by senators and representatives who only meet ceremonially in DC and ban any funds from outside of a state to be spent on campaigns. At least one of those would take amendments currently.

340 In a very divided district, Newhouse won his primary with only 25% of the vote - terrible for an incumbent. He is counting on the Trump supporters in his district to say "oh well gotta vote R in November, no matter who it is." But if they believe that they're better off with an honest Dem rather than lying piece of shit Newhouse, he's not going to get much more than the 25% he got in this race - and that will be against only one opponent, not a big list.

353 This is the thing that gets me. MTG has no trouble raising money from small donors, and her shop gets to keep all the money, rather than give a vig to the 'consultants' who represent the Bigs. If you have a strong message and a website, you'll get all the money you need - especially for a House race.

Posted by: Darrell Harris at August 17, 2022 09:08 AM (OB+je)

In most states, there is an enormous difference in the money needed to win a Senate race versus a house race.

And, trying to be somewhat fair to conservative senators - it is much easier to be a firebrand conservative in a +20 republican district than in a state-wide race where the difference is usually much smaller and many of the republican voters aren't really that conservative.

I can understand GOP senators being less aggressively conservative than a MGT - what I can't understand is when they refuse to do conservative things that ARE popular across the board, such as border security and dealing with illegal immigration.

They've also screwed up the Boy Scouts of America bankruptcy 'deal'. They were supposed to put millions into the pot, in return be absolved of responsibility for any scouts sexual abuse in their troops - and apparently there was plenty. They re-wrote the deal to absolve themselves from any and all sexual abuse including stuff outside of scouting. The bankruptcy judge read all the fine print and caught it.

It's a material argument at this point. The only question is how far it will fall. The problem is, it cascades. You have historically high prices because of demand and cheap money. Now you have historically falling demand, higher rates, growing inventory and to top it off, falling prices. The last part is bad for people who bought in the last 18 months since they are going to watch their equity slip away. I don't see that trajectory as a good one. Real estate value are already falling in major markets and a record number of people are backing out of contracts, especially for new homes. It's becoming a shit puddle very quickly.

Absolutely no - a new Congress can cause a lot of trouble for Biden and his bureaucracy and create some chaos, but there's nothing they can do to actually make things better - gotta control the bureaucracy, the only true source of power in our government, to do that.

They are letting the enemy know they have footage, and that they don't want them to know what they have.

This isn't standard Project Veritas we have something big politics. Their lives are on the line here. The feds would put every Trump in jail if they could. Easy to forget from our vantage point that it's real for them.

416 Rank Choice Voting is a scam to prevent conservatives from winning elections when nobody gets a solid majority.

Liberal / mushy republicans will vote for Murkowski.

Conservatives will vote for the conservative, but b/c she's GOP, will at least put Murkowski 2nd because at the end of the day, they'd rather see a GOP senator than a dem senator.

Dems will put Murkowsi second b/c they don't want the conservative.

Independents who don't vote Murkowski will likely put Murkowski 2nd if they voted Dem and even if they vote for the conservative.

So, if nobody gets 50.1% of the vote, they go to second choices, and low and behold - Murkowsi wins.

I doubt there is a scenario where a true conservative wins after they go to 2nd choices.

421 I'm still dubious about "voting." I'm also (ahem) way past 29.

Voting Republican is a lot like playing the lottery. You can spend a lot of money trying to get your preferred candidate in, but you're still likely to lose. Politicians are no longer beholden to their constituents. The second they take "the oath of office" they are off to the grifting table to grab a seat. Putting your faith, real religious-like faith in a politician is never a winning strategy. Yet there are millions of voters out there who do just that.

If you're a leftist however you're more than likely to get exactly what you're paying for.

I hate doing crystal ball stuff, but all indications are "no". I believe at that point we will be in a solid recession. Corporate earnings, which drive a lot of the economy are going to take a hit. The new Manchin Tax bill is going to sting from the corporate sector down to consumers. Ditto the growth engine, small businesses, who will continue to struggle. Also, this doubling of the IRS is no small matter. They will be going after a lot of people and that's going to hurt the economy. Same for the job market. It will roll along, but it will continue to sink, and the quality of job, hourly wages will take a hit. We already have a record number of people working two jobs, that will continue. That said, I don't see where the equities market rallies, or when.

If the only stoves, water heaters, and furnaces for sale are electric due to Gov't regulations, you'll buy electric. If the only food for sale is insects and quinoa, you'll eat insects and quinoa.

No explicit laws are required for these steps. All it takes is a Porkulus bill giving the heads of Exec Departments and Agencies the power to "issue appropriate rules and regulations to meet The President's emission goals."
