2 There was a story yesterday that Newsome was thinking about spending money to keep the only nuclear power plant in California operational. I can't believe environmentalist would ever allow that. It might just be a Newsome attempt to show he cares, when he really doesn't.

9 From the EV subscription article.

The subscription model has some logic for consumers. In part because of fast-evolving technology, EVs have traditionally shed value much quicker than gas-powered cars. On a depreciation scale, consumers typically lump them in with cell phones.

Well, hold me back doggy daddy. Cars that depreciate like cell phones.

China controls most of the minerals used in solar panels, or buying up the rights.

50 Hydrogen is very hard to contain. I understand it leaks from everything.

Posted by: Dr. Bone at August 15, 2022 04:43 AM (WHt4f)

When you turn hydrogen into a liquid, which ain't all that easy, it turns into a superfluid. And a superfluid does some strange things, like climbing UP the sides of a beaker. And since hydrogen is the tiniest element, it can find leaks that other gaseous elements go "no fucking way".

55 49 The whole maintenance gang, millwrights, electricians, fitters, riggers, and others (union) had so many rules, real and imagined, in the bargaining agreement their boss, the plant engineer wouldn't even contest a grievance. Used to see guys get 4 hours pay sitting at home because of seniority and job description. I was cut back, down to driving a Tenant sweeper, and lent a hand to two of the millwrights. Steward saw it, didn't grieve me, got me an hourly premium for four hours and somebody off shift got paid.

It only lasted until I could find another job.

The supervisors would have to keep track of who got what OT. If the wrong person got to work OT nothing would be said about it until the next day. Then it would be grieved. The one who didn't work would then get the OT pay without working it.

60 Hydrogen not only leaks from everything, it has an extremely low energy density. A large volume of liquid hydrogen has much less energy that just about any liquid fuel and it has to be kept under extreme cryogenic temperatures (20 Kelvin) and that requires additional volume for insulation. If you let it boil off during transport, you have about 75% of what you had when you left unless you have a large electrical energy source to run the incredibly inefficient refrigeration equipment to reliquify the boil-off.

70 I do a lot of work around union people, but our shop isn't union. It's too damn small, and 90% of the employees are related to each other anyway. We get a bit of flack out in the field when other outfits find out we're the dreaded "Non-Union" (gasp! Scabs!), until they actually work with us. Then they realize that we're basically the water that flows between the stones. We'll work through breaks. We'll work any time of day. We'll do whatever needs doing. But that's because we get paid and treated very, very well by our company, so we don't mind going out on a limb sometimes.

I can still appreciate how trade unions need to exist, because I've seen how bad workers can get screwed by management even *with* a union in place. 76 Hydrogen production using wind: I don't get why it's inefficient; a large part of the cost is electricity used to separate the the H2 from water. Putting aside the unreliability of wind power, and its devastating effects on birds, you do have the innate stupidity of two governments.

77 Continuing my useless rant.......

And then you loose all that energy at the point of use when you turn it back into gas.

Liquid hydrogen has 27% of the energy content of LNG by volume. Four ships instead of one.

Liquifying hydrogen takes about 33% of the energy in the liquified hydrogen, as opposed to the 10% required for LNG.

This idea is ridiculous.

If this moves ahead we are truly doomed.

I have a co-worker who was looking forward to leaving the union when we became a right-to-work state. Crunched the numbers on carrying liability insurance and decided to stay in.

96 Looks like somewhere around six folks suffered the indignities of only making minimum credit card payments, and dying of gunshot woulds in Baltimore this weekend.

But mostly, dying of gunshot wounds.

The CDC now acknowledges that "primary series" vaccination "provides minimal protection against infection and transmission" and boosters offer only "transient" increased protection. Earlier CDC research suggested unboosted vaccines become worse than nothing.

101 " Earlier CDC research suggested unboosted vaccines become worse than nothing."

So it was statistically better to remain completely unvaccinated, rather than the vax, followed by no booster?

No, you have to get the booster to the boosters, then it is effective. To make the symptoms less serious.

"Earlier CDC research suggested unboosted vaccines become worse than nothing."

In ~2020, before the vaccine was released I read an article out of Australia that every prior effort to create a vaccine for corona-type disease had resulted in 'enhanced disease' in animal studies.

At which time I decided there was no fvcking way I was engaging in human guinea pigging.

113 Mentioned a while back I was making efforts to de-Google using an old Samsung Chromebook. So: Gallium OS; LibreOffice; Zoho for gdocs-type function, and usually Yandex for a search engine. The whole thing is very light weight, and if anything more is needed for storage, USB sticks.
I don't do anything that requires 'Big 'Puting Powah' so it's perfect for me.
I like the setup a lot. Oh! If you use a Chromebook for this, DO NOT!!! try to log into your Google account with it! It will try to reload Chrome and screw the whole thing up! Use a phone for that.
I despise gmail anyway, after I caught them blocking emails about Covid, when I got quarantined in... uh... Balkan Country. Yandex Mail (Russian, yes, they read it all) has never censored anything I've sent, ever.

115 In the Fall of 2020 we packed up our rental house in Houston and prepared to live out of suitcases for at least four months. Which turned into almost six months until our household goods finally arrived to our house in Spain. I'd been trapped before with inadequate access to the internet/computer games, so I packed my 26" computer monitor into one giant suitcase with all of the accessories and bought a small carry-on suitcase into which I placed my tower. No problems and everything traveled without incident.

117 Hydrogen also has another fun effect for the greenies. What do you get when you burn it? Gaseous water.

What is gaseous water *extremely good at*? Trapping heat.

The whole worry about CO2 is the concern that it might trap enough heat to increase relative humidity levels, which would cause a thermal feedback loop. Now I gather there are open questions about whether humidity's heat trapping out performs clouds thermal reflection capacity, so it could just as easily be that a thermal bump is countered by cloud layer.

However, the greens has decided to skip the CO2 lever and go directly into dumping raw energy into cracking and vaporizing water.

Cool beans. Now we get to be lectured on how polluting the hydrogen economy is, after spending tons of time and energy on switching over to it.
