I watched an entertaining documentary about a trove of ancient Egyptian archives found which among other things contained a record of an official trading expedition to Cush in the south (today's Ethiopia, roughly) One of the funny bits was that they put a lot of effort into drawing a picture of the Queen of Cush, a woman who would rate as one of the black ultra-plus sized models today. It was clear that the Egyptians were astounded by her, as they themselves were all pretty uniform and none of them had ever seen a person who looked like that before.

In the days when people were healthy and matured a bit earlier, those are completely healthy and normal 13 and 14 year olds, which is why they were picked as handmaidens. It may seem kind of sketchy to us with modern moral sensibilities, but the ancient world didn't see things that way. Hence, I rate Collier's interpretation of them as very likely accurate.

Robert Graves (of I, Claudius fame) wrote a novel called Homer's Daughter which retells the Odysseian homecoming from the point of view of a young princess. (Characters are changed and it takes place on Sicily, not Ithaca.) It follows the theory that the authors of The Iliad and The Odyssey were different and that the latter might well have been written by a woman.

They seem to be obstructed in their effort by the Obama 2009 memo authorizing sweeping presidential rights to unilaterally declassify anything at all, merely by saying so, and the formal Trump declassification of ANY and ALL Russia-gate documents, without limitation.

Despite all that, the DOJ is trying to find even one document with which they can charge him, because the "Obstruction of Congress" charge is so laughable.

Kings have always tried to claim Divinity, starting with the ancient Pharaohs themselves. In the ancient world, the Church IS the State. Of course that never stopped anyone from killing the old King (or Pharaoh) if they thought they could get away with it; they just claimed that they were the New Blessed One of the Gods sent to take back power from the Old, Evil, Apostate Enemy of the Gods. As long as they had enough spears behind them, nobody would question it.

Yep, if you notice, it became more prevalent around the 15-1600's in political theory which coincided with Gutenberg's printing press, the formation of the nation state, the end of feudalism, and the Reformation. Prior to that, the Roman Catholic church often threatened excommunication during the age of faith for anyone trying to overthrow a king. Made it unnecessary for a king to proclaim it but as the Church's authority began to break down, Princes and kings took it upon themselves to declare divinity to gain commoner support against the nobles.

381 Kings have always tried to claim Divinity, starting with the ancient Pharaohs themselves.

Egypt basically was a theocracy with a king as titular head of the religious bureaucracy. India had its Brahmins but a fair number of civilizations had distinct religious and secular authorities which did not always agree on claims of divinity, that is especially true for nationalities that elected their kings. China, as usual, due to its long history showed its own cyclical claims of god-emperors.

399 Our lefty DU friends are still "big mad" over DeSantis' veterans teaching policy: DeSantis: "For too long, the requirements to be a teacher have been too rigid." When DeSantis says teacher requirements are too rigid, what he’s actually saying is it needs to be easier to install unqualified teachers who can indoctrinate children using conservative ideology and revisionist history. Schools are sliding in educational outcomes and indoctrinating kids with lefty crap with the current system, so maybe a change is in order?

DeSantis youth camps. Indoctrination of children. Who will rat out their parents and friends to the GOP storm trooper militia. Don't laugh, this is the plan.

I wonder if DeSantis believes his own shit? I wish the studio had had the guts to go with Mankiewicz' original 6-hour cut as either a stand-alone or as two separate movies, Caesar and Cleopatra and Antony and Cleopatra. Part of that wish is that, while Cleo marries Caesar and bears him a son, in the second half, Antony becomes the great love of her life, so much so that she wants to be buried in the gold dress from the Entry to Rome so Antony "will know me from a long way off". How did her love for Caesar fade?

467 I wish the studio had had the guts to go with Mankiewicz' original 6-hour cut as either a stand-alone or as two separate movies, Caesar and Cleopatra and Antony and Cleopatra. Part of that wish is that, while Cleo marries Caesar and bears him a son, in the second half, Antony becomes the great love of her life, so much so that she wants to be buried in the gold dress from the Entry to Rome so Antony "will know me from a long way off". How did her love for Caesar fade?
Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at August 15, 2022 10:48 AM (AW0uW)

I saw an interview with Hume Cronyn, who played Cleopatra's wisest counselor. He lamented that there was a full hour of very good scenes that he played a big part in that got left on the cutting room floor - leaving him with only about 15 minutes of screen time.

Notice that Objectivism absent its author is rapidly becoming a footnote. Ayn Rand was trying to create a third way of rugged individualism between the traditional west emphasizing both individual and society and the crushing oppression of the Sov. Union emphasizing only society.

You have to balance the social contract with the real life behavior of individuals--even Rousseau recognized that.

499 209:
Odysseus and Penelope did have a daughter, named Ktimene, which is considered pronounceable in Greek, like Ptolemy. She's mentioned in Book 15 of the Odyssey, where Eumaeus the swineherd tells the wandering beggar (Odysseus in disguise) that he and Ktimene played together as children, but now she's married and moved to a far-off island so he hasn't seen her in years.

If you ever meet one of those annoying people who says "The Odyssey is my favorite book! I've read it six/seven/eight times!", ask him/her "What was Odysseus' sister's name?". If the answer is "What? Odysseus didn't have a sister!", just quietly say "I don't think you've read the _whole_ Odyssey six/seven/eight times. It looks like you skim the duller parts." (Books 14-15, where Odysseus hangs out with the swineherd telling lies and planning his revenge, is nobody's favorite part.)

By the way, I once met a high-school student named Ktimene. Not Greek, but child of a poet and an English teacher. Her friends called her Kate. Much older now.
