Welcome to this weekly respite from most of the outside "civilized" world -- the Ace of Spades Pet Thread.

Thanks for stopping by. Sniff out your best treats, kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Reminder: For current events and politics, the Thread before the Gardening Thread (a couple of threads below) is almost always an Open Thread.

Watch out for skunks.

Hello,

Long time lurker, very very occasional poster Pilum57. This is Wessex. His original family returned him after only 4 or 5 months as he had taken to sleeping on top of open doors, shredding curtains, and constantly testing if gravity was only a local phenomenon with full glasses of any given beverage. A very rambunctious ginger. Upon first meeting him he strolled into the room and immediately jumped from the floor to my shoulder in a single bound and took up permanent residence. He clearly knew I was his person from the moment he saw me. Wessex died last August 13th and as this year, August 13th falls on a Saturday, I thought the Pet Thread would be a great memorial for him. He was a fantastic, wildly entertaining, and very sweet cat.

Wessex looks very sweet, with loads of personality. Glad we could do a special anniversary memorial today.

I am long time lurker, SteveF and I finally decided to share photos of my buddy Dudley. He is an Australian Shepard and he turned 16 this year. We have had him for 14 of those years. He is very chill in his old age and has always been super friendly. We love the pet thread and check it every week, keep up the good work. In one photo he is trying his new winter coat and in the other he is trying his favorite chair.

Looks like a different dog in his winter duds!

Howdy - long time lurker Greywolf here - have sent pet pics in the past (Magnum and Samson the wonder-Collies) and some kittehs.

Wanted to contribute some more - we currently have 5 cats and 2 dogs (as well as one fish and 7 chickens). Being 55 years of age and married for 32 years but not having kids means having LOTS of pets.

I present to you Empress Anastasia - aka Anna Banana - aka Nanner. - A wonderful young woman rescued this old gal from an Italian restaurant's garbage dumpster - she had either been dumped there or had escaped/ran away from her owners and was barely surviving on leftover dumped Italian food. One of her eyes was almost gone and her other eye was not in great shape, either. But she kept begging and crying to anyone who came to the restaurant to save her. We initially decided to foster her (we had previously adopted a cat from this lady) but we fell in love with Ana as she was so sweet and no one seemed to want to adopt an older, special needs cat. She ended up losing one eye but the other is pretty good. She doesn't like our other cats (we assume she was attacked by the other strays in the colony at the Italian restaurant) but is cool with the Collies, and she just loves us.

I highly encourage everyone out there, if you can, to give these older, special case cats and dogs a chance. They have so much love to give, are pretty easy to handle, and they deserve a second chance.

You are treating her like an empress!

Dunson big stick.jpg

This is Dunson the yellow lab.

I like big sticks and I can not lie

You other doggies can't deny

That when a lappy walks in with an itty bitty stick

And a skinny thing in your face

You get sprung, want to pull up tough

'Cause you notice that twig was stuffed

Deep in the purse she's wearing

I'm hooked and I can't stop staring

I like 'em round and big

And when he's throwin' a gig

I just can't help myself, I'm actin' like an animal

Now here's my scandal

I want to get you home

And ugh, double-up, ugh, ugh

I ain't talkin' bout Playdog

'Cause silicone parts are made for toys

I want 'em real, thick and juicy

So find that juicy double

Dunson's in trouble

Beggin' for a piece of that bubble

Pike Place Pete

We love dog poetry at the Pet Thread!

I adopted a new kitteh yesterday. I'll be sending in pics and the story info for next week.

Allie the cat needed a home, so she's taken to mine. Right now she's hanging out in the sunroom. Still adjusting to a strange environment and strange kittehs...

22 Eulogy to my friend:
He was a good dog. He was my buddy. He was a mutt with a hillbilly pedigree, thus the five names. Marcus Barkus Rufus Dufus O'Malley was my dog longer than any other canine companion in my life. Almost made it eighteen years. Showed up on my porch one morning a frightened, hungry pup with signs that he had been mistreated. He learned to trust me and I him. Fond memories of the walks in the woods and then him standing chest deep in the crick cooling off. Getting him to do the circle dance with me would always illicit giggles from my grandkids. Mrs. Sock found him this morning about 5 and came and gently woke me. I am glad that he passed with relatively little pain. He's up on the hillside now underneath the shade of Old man pine with three of my other four legged friends. Gid speed Dufus.

25 Wow. Got up from my nap and the pet thread is not past its comment-by time. Hi, pet folks.

Our little (but rapidly getting bigger) adoptee Belgian Malinois, Daisy, continues to train MiladyJo and me in how to behave. Sometimes she needs to give us a little nip to keep us in line. This morning on my wrist, hardly drew blood at all. I now have "Malinois" arms.

Seriously, when she gets all excited with a squeeky chew toy, one has to watch out for the frantic snapping jaws of destruction.

A name like Daisy may sound like pretty flowers, but lately I think of her last name as "Cutter" -- look out!

Off to read the post.

It is a real lesson to me, about patience and understanding, that when our pup does wild things like trying to drag my arm away, or barking frantically right in my ear, she really is trying to tell us something. Usually. She is smart and we are dumb. So we ask her what she needs, and she'll run to her dish, or the door, or a toy. We're learning. What is it, Daisy? Did Timmy fall down the well again?

We're dealing with how she was treated by whoever raised her from a puppy; much to learn, and unlearn.

39 Skunk spray is a mixture of sulfur compounds, mainly thiobutane. That method with the bicarb paste/20 minutes? Good luck keeping the average animal still and not wanting to lick or rub it off. I haven't tried what I'm going to suggest but either a 1-2% solution of hydrogen peroxide (with or without a little dish soap) or a similar 1% solution of bleach (with or without soap). 1% bleach is called Milton's Solution and is used to gargle, disinfect baby bottles, etc. Quite safe and cheap. The bleach worked in the lab when I worked with butyl mercaptan, another name for the same stuff. It's also added to town gas so that a leak is obvious. I have a lab story about that for maybe later if there's interest.

51 Afternoon, folk! Handsome beasts today. And yes, the cat would indeed be concerned only with who *else* is going to change the light bulb. After he had a chance to play with the old one, naturally.

Stirling the Evil Black Kitten of War and Pestilence is here on the cushion next to me on the sofa. He is growing like black-furred kudzu. I don't have an official weight, but a rough test with a bathroom scale (set so it displayed my doctor's-office weight result) seems to indicate he's over 7 lbs. already at 5 months. He was 6.2 at his 2nd vet visit in July and 5 back in late June. His tail is bushing out a bit too. Now if he will just grow into those ears and lose the one white whisker . . . and stop acting like a kitten on meth!

I've bought some double-sided carpet tape and will apply it to the couch and other places he's been likely to scratch. The scratching post is in good shape and has catnip on it. Maybe this will work.

I do. He and I shared some good times. We shared the guarded wariness of unfamiliar two leggeds. I attributed his to mistreatment by some unknown asshat. Mine is a bit more complicated. The one exception in his life was my father. When dad moved in with us Marcus took an instant liking to him. Dad liked to sit in the back yard and enjoy the peace and quiet. Marcus would sit or lay next to his chair the entire time. When my dad passed Marcus kept coming into the backyard as though he was looking for him for quite a while. I knew he was close to being done. He stopped going with Mrs. Sock on her morning walks a couple weeks ago. He gave me a look several evenings ago that told me he was done. It was a good run. Our eleven year old cat disappeared in May so we are without four legged friends for now. I think we will wait until next spring, God willing, to find another friend.

68 Having a vet come visit Monday but has anyone had a cat that simply stopped peeing in the litter box? We got new hardwood floors last year and she thinks they are a much better place than the litter box.

I think it's behavioral because she's had this issue off and on ever since we got her from the shelter years ago (which is why I think she was at the shelter in the first place, someone else couldn't take it any more.) It has not been a problem until the past couple weeks. She's never had a UTI, but checking that with the vet. Checking everything with the vet.

75 11 ... "I've apologized to my cats a few times. Mostly when I've accidentally stepped on their paw and they let out a blood-curdling yowl to let me know about my clumsy misstep."

Our dogs were always small and would let me (and the rest of the neighborhood) know if one of my size 15 shoes came down on a paw. I got in the habit of shuffling when in the house to avoid that. They appreciated the effort. Even after the last one passed, it took months to get used to walking normally.

81 A few summers back, Omaha had an incredibly hot, dry summer. It was so hot and dry the wild day pillows burnt to a crisp, putting out nary a flower. Years ago, the XO made a lovely low stone bench in the front yard, then dished out a piece of sandstone to make a birdbath. It was practically the only dependable watering hole in the neighborhood, and evetything, including skunks, came for a drink. Doggie #1 got nailed first -- A direct hit to her chest. She caught a little bit again a few weeks later. Doggie #2 caught a bit of the fall out from another skunk a couple weeks later. We became skunk smell removal specialists. Fill a plastic bucket with water. Dump in some hydrogen peroxide and Dawn dish detergent. The Dawn breaks down the oil. The hydrogen peroxide helps wash out the stench. Just keep scrubbing and rinsing. The dog will hate you, but keep scrubbing and rinsing. And for God's sake, do not let the dog into the house until every trace of skunk is gone. Doggie #1 got into the house before we realized what had happened. It was an atomic explosion of stench that took days to clean out.

89 Boo and Banjo both got sprayed about a week apart. I guess I’d never smelled skunk spray fresh outta the spigot. It was like nothing I’d ever experienced and different to what I thought skunk spray smelled like. In a bad way if I wasn’t clear. For eight months the stench would rise again when I bathed Boo.

95 Great eulogy for your puppy, Sock. Many condolences to all those who have lost furry and precious friends over the years.....we are glad we can bury our beloved pets in our backyard- would be hard to leave them behind at the vet...:{. We just had to bury one of our outdoor kitties the other day. Don't know what happened; just got sick-- couldn't ear or drink, and was gone in about a day. He was fairly wild, but would stop to b get a pet when he ate. We are down to 1 outside now. Have 2 totally spoiled brats in the house though.(Maine Coons). They are de-clawed, though, so can't go outside. Rescues.........

97 Having a vet come visit Monday but has anyone had a cat that simply stopped peeing in the litter box? We got new hardwood floors last year and she thinks they are a much better place than the litter box.

I think it's behavioral because she's had this issue off and on ever since we got her from the shelter years ago (which is why I think she was at the shelter in the first place, someone else couldn't take it any more.) It has not been a problem until the past couple weeks. She's never had a UTI, but checking that with the vet. Checking everything with the vet.

Cats....
Posted by: Colonel Travis at August 13, 2022 04:43 PM (Cgo1x)

Sometimes if climbing into the box hurts or there is a UTI they will change their habits. If they are using the floor you might try a lower sided tray or make a ramp to get in.

98 No skunks up here, but we do have porcupines. They are cute, but can be nasty to a nosy dog. One of our dogs when I was young decided to try one on. Dad spent all afternoon in the garage with a pair of pliers pulling out quills. Bobo was remarkably stoic about the whole thing. Of course, Bobo was also a cat killer, due to being clawed rather horribly on the snoot when a puppy. He'd wait until a neighbor cat perched on top of the fence, and then hit the fence at full speed, leaving the cat in the air over his open yap. End of cat.

Dogs, and what they do.

101 Can confirm hydrogen peroxide/ baking soda antidote for skunk spray. I have relocated many many skunks and took a point blank hit once. Got it in the eyes and the pain was screaming agony. Got home and pasted up in the yard and hosed off, end of drama. Works a treat on dogs too. Ozone machine for truck.

102 Great lineup of beautiful animals.

Dunson and Max look like they would hit it off.

I'm curious about the "Anatolian" reference. Is Max from Asia?

103 My neighbor has an Anatolian, they are from Turkey from what he said. I had to walk it for two weeks when they went away. That is a BIG dog to walk. If she wanted to go a certain direction that was where we were going. I almost bit it a couple of times going down our street which is dirt and a bit gravely, she was pretty excited to go out and I had to run to keep from getting pulled over. But she is one of the most docile dogs I have ever known. Very sweet tempered.

105 The best formula for skunk spray is, 1/4 cup of baking soda, pour 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide from a sealed container onto it, add a teaspoon of dish soap. Mix quickly and then sop it onto the sprayed areas.
