The Saturday Night Joke

A pastor was 10-minutes into his sermon when he noticed his young son in the balcony with a pea-shooter.
He was leaning over the "balcony"—aiming, and popping people in the head.
As the pastor prepared to deliver a very public scolding of his boy – the 7 year-old son hollered out, “You keep preaching Dad, and I’ll keep’em awake! (H/T Isophorone Blog)

Yes indeed folks, it is the Overnight Open Thread, but it's Saturday night as well. So let's try and have some fun, okie dokie?

If you think socialized medicine is bad. Check out socialized dentistry.

A mum has pulled her own teeth out three times after failing to get a dentist’s appointment.

Layla Waters, 52, contacted every NHS practice within 70 miles of home but could not get a face-to-face appointment in over two years.

After her first infected tooth became loose and the pain unbearable in 2020, she resorted to desperate measures.

Family Spends 48 Hours in the Wild Due to Google Maps, It Should Be a Lesson for Everyone

Google Maps is an incredible piece of software that can make the experience behind the wheel a lot safer and more convenient. But a family of four from Australia learned the hard way that the navigation offered by Google Maps isn’t always flawless.

Cool stereo. Lousy wheels.

The bright yellow car pulled into a Wilmington parking lot after 1 a.m., the half-dozen speakers mounted to its roof blaring, according to town police. The car’s license plate, from New Hampshire, read “STATICK.” In three separate towns, residents phoned the police with noise complaints.

It was roughly 1:30 a.m. Monday when Wilmington Police responded to the lot, in the area of Woburn Street and Eames Street, after multiple calls from local residents. Officers found a 22-year-old New Hampshire man, his sun-yellow vehicle and six “full sized” speakers affixed to its roof, they said.

That is a lot of ambulances to chase.

That means a Columbia law student could spend more than $330,000 to complete their three-year degree.

“It’s a pretty crazy large number,” said University of Iowa law professor Derek Muller. “People will point out, ‘Well, there are scholarships.’ But not everyone gets very big scholarships, and very few get anything for cost of living.”

Muller sparked a discussion about the price of attending Columbia and its peer schools this week when he tweeted about the latest cost estimates. New York University School of Law’s estimated annual cost is $109,290; both Harvard and Stanford come in at $107,000; the University of Chicago’s estimate is roughly $106,000; and Georgetown Law's is $103,400 per year.

The ONT Is Always Looking Out For YouTM And tonight is no different. Move over Sous Vide machine, the microwave is the hero.

There are so many ways you can put your microwave to good use, even if you don’t use your device very much. Whether it’s juicing a lemon or reusing stamps, your microwave can do all kinds of cool things that you may have never realized.

Here are 10 things you never knew your microwave could do:

On the bright side it wasn't a lightning bolt. Genius Award Winner.

A burglar got a bit more than he bargained for after a skunk sprayed him while he was being arrested.

Grant Simonson, 28, was detained last Thursday morning after he was caught rifling through a church’s audio equipment in Washington state.

Deputies from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene just after 3am after a caller notified them that they could see someone with a mask and a flashlight in the church on its surveillance feed.

Long day. Six dogs groomed today and feet and nails trimmed Took about an hour for each. Except Dan. He has one of those huge, cottony Swedish coats that he inherited from his great-great grandfather Birk. It picks up dirt, leaves and branches like a vacuum cleaner. So he took nearly two hours to finish. Worse than that, he's a big baby. He looks like a stallion dog but he whines, frets and thrashes when laid on the grooming table.

Tomorrow everyone gets a bath.

Well since this is the movie thread I should mention our movie showing tomorrow in Sterling, IL if anyone is nearby and it will be shown at 2 pm, 611 E Third St, Sterling. It's about the start of the abolitionist movement which was integral to the fires that started the CW.

Partially filmed in the Dillon Home in Sterling "Sons and Daughters of Thunder" is the story of the start of the abolitionist movement. if you are interested the the evolution before the CW it is very good.

89 The story about a limey taking out her own tooth because it would take two years to get a dentist appointment hit home for me.
The weekend before last I had a lot of pain in the back of my mouth. I called the dentist first thing Monday morning and they got me in that day. Big relief it was just that I brush too hard and the gumline was exposed. Nothing that needed treatment.
Not only did they get me in right away, but the dentist told me about their weekend hours if something happened in the future.

None of this, wait two years for an appointment shit.

107 That means a Columbia law student could spend more than $330,000 to complete their three-year degree.

It's kinda like buying a lottery ticket, innit? You shell out major bucks to go to a "top tier" school in the hopes of joining some famous firm or becoming an activist judge. A lot lose on that bet. Or you can go to a lesser known law school and do family law or whatever is considered less glamorous. 170 "So let's try and have some fun, okie dokie?"

so the next comment about "fun" ...

"A mum has pulled her own teeth out three times after failing to get a dentist’s appointment. -- After her first infected tooth became loose and the pain unbearable in 2020, she resorted to desperate measures."

Fun, fun, fun. heh. Is it Safe? Hell NO, it is not safe or fun.

OK, but the next was more positive "Family Spends 48 Hours in the Wild Due to Google Maps, It Should Be a Lesson for Everyone ... where they were eaten by Dingos" (I may have used a little literary/poetic license there).

"Literary License came to mind, but I searched it to be sure, and I guess "poetic license" is more common, but I ain't no poet, and I know it.

hahaha ... it's all good, carry on mate.

171 I have a AAA Route 66: America’s Highway I want to use soon.

And on my checklist of things to do before any major trip is “download maps” of the areas I’ll be traveling in. Some of the backroads shortcuts I like to use don’t have service. Two years ago I was reduced to “take any road going east, and if there isn’t one, go north” while crossing from Illinois to Indiana on the way to Michigan. I’d accidentally canceled the map and there was no service to restart it. Stupid thing couldn’t even recall the route it was just doing seconds ago.

173 The phone & Google Maps "GPS" are NOT actual GPS. They triangulate your estimated position by measuring time between signals to/from two or more celphone towers. And if cel coverage is weak, so is the degree of accuracy of that estimated position. Plus, a weak cel signal will introduce much "latency" (lag time) into the results, meaning you'll often pass up a turn before the phone knows to say "Hey, TURN!"

Garmin, Tom-Tom and other TRUE GPS systems, read the time differentials from low-earth orbiting Global Positioning Satellites, and as long as three or more can be read, deliver remarkable accuracy, worldwide.

HOW accurate? A land surveyor using a very high end antenna & receiver, can drive the bronze marker into the ground on the boundary line, to about a MAXIMUM ERROR of 1/8th inch from true.

Advantage. Real GPS. Buy Garmin with free lifetime updates. And always study your atlas and smaller scale maps, so you know where things are RELATIVE to other things and places. GPS can make for geographical illiteracy.

Agreed! And always carry paper maps or a road atlas anyway. GPS has extreme tunnel vision. It is built to give you the fastest, most direct route from Point A to Point B. It really cannot cope well with alternates, until you actually venture onto one! 249 I really enjoy using the DeLorme Gazetteers. I have them for most of the western states. Sometimes, I'll take a forest service road to get to where I'm going when I'm on a road trip. You never know what you're going to find.

250 AC, cont.:

His lawyer said that AC wanted to prosecute-- the drunk really pissed Cooper off-- tore his shirt & stuff.

I said, fine. Mr. C needs to come into the warrant office. We're open to midnight. We had that requirement to show up in person, to make sure the victim will show up in court three months later.

Lawyer said that I could take his word for it that Cooper would show up as needed. I said, "No-- can't have one rule for him & another for everyone else."

On a recent trip to OH my wife and I confessed to her family that we not only had inn our possession, but actually used a Rand McNally US Road Atlas, published 2022. 269 Alice Cooper seems like the decent sort, and has navigated fame a lot better than many of his contemporaries. To hear him tell it in radio interviews, said contemporaries' early demises were a big influence in him not getting in too deep, and then diverting his obsessive tendencies toward golf when he was on the edge.

Also, I visited STL once in the 90s when I was young, and thought that Adam's Mark place looked pretty cool from the outside. This was back before the city got promoted to full shithole status, obviously, when one could walk around during the day and not get mugged.

Posted by: LRob in TX at August 13, 2022 10:36 PM (KTPXo)

There are a lot of recipes for kimchi, none of which call for dog.
They all require varying ungodly quantities of ground chili peppers of the hottest sort, and a lot of them require raw oysters, raw shrimp and tiny raw octopodes or squid. It ferments down to kimchi and self made fish sauce.
The hottest I have had is the type made from Daikon leaves, but I think they were going easy on me.

Traditional Korean cooking has a lot of ingredients that have been left in jars in a cool place for up to a couple of years.

Leaving Silverton, rode the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray, then on down the hill to Grand Junction, and onward to the West.

My ride was a '89 Honda Gold Wing, GL-1500. But frankly, and bike with engine enough to pull the hills would be fine. Still the one single most handful of miles I've experienced thus far. I haven't ridden in Switzerland, but I imagine the Million Dollar Highway provides a pretty close match.

Column distilled from molasses and aged in ex-bourbon oak casks. No additives.

For any aged rum afficionados (the rum, not the afficionado) I recommend trying 1731's offerings, if you can find them (I got them from a liquor specialty store up in LA, free shipping). Priced in the $30s, some distilled by prestigious distilleries in the various countries.

Not exactly low profile behavior. I don't really know if he *was* low profile, otherwise, so not going to instantly declare this (yet another) FBI failure.

The US response to the fatwah against Rushdie, from the start, was disgracefully and pathetically limp, given the symbolic nature of the terror. Of course now I expect nothing, since the idiotic electorate has returned to power the dumbest most destructive people at the helm in a century or more, whose signature idiocy is seeking to appease the vile dangerous Tehran regime.

419 Aetius I doubt 1731 is widely distributed, think they're small - if the owner is email me responses to questions.

You might try Drizly or winesearcher.com for a broader search. And I think you're in KY? Dunno your state's laws, but if you can ship booze in, you can find just about anything via national searches like the ones above (there are others) and have it shipped.

But if you're interested in trying some good aged rum that's much more widely distributed, I'd suggest looking for Doorly's 12-yr or Seale's 10-yr (both from Foursquare distillery in Barbados, both under $30). That is, for an additive-free (no sweetening), somewhat oaky style. If you have a specialty/good liquor store nearby, or a Total Wine, I can suggest a few other names to try.

426 Sat on a jury for an attempted murder case in DC, wherein the perps shot the victim 13 times (he survived, paralyzed).

Two young, white suburban-ish types on the jury would *not* convict on the attempted murder charge (gee, what was typical or a forecasting of our current descent about that?). 13 hits. I remember the young guy saying "but, but .... they didn't walk up and finish him off! and stuff!". Umm - because they *shot him 13 times, they kinda figured he was a gonner, duh*.

Will never forget the black women on the jury, who were furious with the stupid young white jurors. One had a classic response: "they shot him 13 times!! what was that, a valentine???". The young idiots laughed but didn't change their vote.

DOJ feds are the prosecutors in DC, one of them saw us in the hall after, we asked about the verdicts (3 other counts, guilty), he said it was OK, this would allow the perps to be put away for a good amount of time). This was back at the tail end of the crack war years.

My takeaway: WTF?

Posted by: Taqiyyologist, Rickrolled by Jesus at August 13, 2022 11:53 PM (M9XmQ)

I enjoyed it, but it's been some years since I read it. And I preferred Midnight's Children and The Ground Beneath Her Feet. Essentially it's a take on religious devotion (Rushdie, like his departed friend Hitch, is an atheist), doubt, and the struggle of good vs. evil, all told through a typical Rushdie lens of magical realism. The title doesn't refer to the Quran, but to a couple misunderstood verses that in the story the prophet Mohammed (in the book Mahound) mistakenly quotes after being deceived by the devil. But because to Muslims Mohammed is supposed to be infallible, this was considered a terrible blasphemy.

481 The Zaporozhe AES of course predates Ukraine's creation as an independent state in 1991, I don't know if the existing grid/service area extended beyond the new border. Meaning I can't assess the (no doubt) Ukrainian claim that Russia is re-routing the output of the station.

But risking a meltdown, by damaging the conventional fuel-powered power supply that is used to maintain cooling during a reactor shutdown via artillery attacks, is truly a ballsy approach.

But - according to Russian claims - there was a concerted attempt a few months back to destroy the dam at Nova Khakovka via missile attack (negated, per the russkis, by missile defenses. That would have been "interesting" for its impact on the populace of that part of Kherson oblast.

Not judging, just observing.

494 Zettai, it's a fairly peculiar war, though most of the oddities can be understood. Whatever the strategery or cynicism etc in official Russian statements about the fraternity of Russia and Ukraine on a cultural and everyday level, there's a core of fact to it. And all the familial and other inter-connections. And the oligarchic entanglement (both ways).

In any case apart from selective attacks on specific fuel-related infrastructure, and rail transport infrastructure serving eastern Ukraine, there hasn't been any serious or systematic attack on general infrastructure.

Husbanding precision munitions, no relation to war objectives, desire to avoid broader/deeper animosity in the wider Ukrainian populace, whatever the rationale, it hasn't happened, and won't. Which is just as well for everyone.

500 Zettai, gotta head out, but the Warsaw Pact sort of collapses on its own - recall this started 2 years before the USSR dissolved. Don't think there was any specific foreign commitment of any kind related to this.

There were a dizzying mish-mash of commitments and statements related to NATO expansion that followed. But the Baltics, Poland, to a lesser extent the Balkan members (Hungary/Romania/Bulgaria) - you'll notice that didn't produce outsized Russian reaction, for good and practical and historical reasons.

But Ukraine was never admitted as a member, despite seeking it a good portion of the last 30 years. Why? For good reasons. But this is a question one never even hears asked in our dumbed-down-beyond recognition country. Would love to have the last 4 SecStates on live TV and ask why - if "countries" like North Macedonia (!!) and Albania are NATO members, why TF isn't Ukraine - long ago? They can't answer without engaging the two real reasons, one of which is ..... clearly risky provocation of Moscow. Follow up question would be: why does NATO still exist? (spoiler - this question was put to such people starting in the mid-90s, they had no real answer)

504 They’re still claiming Trump had the nuclear codes. So they hadn’t changed them in over a year and a half? People who use computer at work know that passwords change regularly and the more important they are, the more often they get changed. So now the people in charge are telling us that they’re just too lazy or stupid to do that?

They’re also telling us how important nukes are, the enemy can have the codes for over a year and a half before we do anything about it. We support transgenders and that’s what matters! The transgenders say so!

This brings to mind a situation where the spinning in one's head is so bad that one has to hold on. Yikes! I don't think I've ever gotten to that point. I like to enjoy the spinning, not be in fear from it.

lol. And now not only might I bounce around the room because I can't hold on to the floor, I might actually fall into space because I can't grip a blade of glass.

511 Weasel's nightmare.

(weasel does not drink)

Being SO drunk, as to have to figure in the Corialis Effect to his near alcohol toxicity drunkeness so as to counter-effect the spinning and floor grabbing.

Figure the floor has a 1:8 twist, at zero percent drunk thirty BAC.

And I'm not EVEN going to try to postulate Weasel's ballistic coefficent. I'm just NOT.
