"Batgirl" Film Was Nearly Completed and Cost Between $70 and $100 Million, But Test Audiences Found It "Unspeakable"
It had finished principle photography and was in post-production, where special effects and music and sound effects and editing would be completed.
And also, mostly likely, reshoots. Especially with big "blockbuster" movies, and especially with big bad "blockbuster" movies, you probably need a two or more (maybe even six) weeks of reshoots with the cast and crew, which can get expensive. I heard a guy estimate that post-production costs could run maybe $80 million more. And then advertising and prints could cost, well, a hundred or two hundred million, i they were going to run it in theaters. But a source said the film was "unspeakable" and "irredeemable" -- and likely to damage the DC Brand, which is already in the toilet. So Zaslev is putting a completed (or near-completed) film in the vault, forever. Andrej from Midnight's Edge thinks that the "poor test screening reaction" story might be a cover story for what's really going on, but let's deal with the cover story for now.By the way, there was yet another race-swap in the casting, and another Gingercide. Barbara "Batgirl" Gordon, a white redhead in the comics, was made into a black (or half-black) girl. If you haven't heard of "Gingercide," it refers to Hollywood's weird insistence on race-swapping every single ginger in the comics to a black actor or sometimes a Hispanic one. Disney does this too (The Little Mermaid). I sort of can explain this: In comic books, "redhead" is usually "the other other other color" to distinguish from the "main color" (brown hair) and "the other other color" (black hair) and "the other other color" (blond hair). I guess maybe Hollywood figures if red hair is just used in comic books to indicate "some other color besides the usual ones," it's a fair move to change all the redheads to black or Hispanic. The gingers -- who are a real minority, of course -- can't be happy about this, though. Where's their representation?
The DC Comics film "Batgirl" will be completely "shelved" by Warner Bros., a top Hollywood source told The Post. That means it won't hit theaters or the streaming service HBO Max. Fans will not see it. The reportedly $70 million movie (the source said the budget was actually more than $100 million), which was doing test screenings for audiences in anticipation of a late 2022 debut, would rank among the most expensive cinematic castoffs ever. Those tests were said to be so poorly received by moviegoers that the studio decided to cut its losses and run, for the sake of the brand's future. It's a DC disaster. "They think an unspeakable 'Batgirl' is going to be irredeemable," the source said. The Post has reached out to Warner Bros. for comment.

With that in mind, WB is said to be searching for a head honcho to run the flailing DC Extended Universe and whip it into coherent shape, like Kevin Feige did with the far more successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is owned by Disney. The current president of DC film production is Walter Hamada.Not for long.

Instead, power will be wielded by an all-controlling DC film production head who will attempt to turn things around. Before they arrive, killing "Batgirl" is Step 1. "This is the end of DC as a hobby," the source said."We are leaving ClownWorld," I read that as meaning. Now, is this really being shelved because of poor audience reaction? Virtually every DC movie has been poorly received; that hasn't stopped them from shitting these things out into American theaters. Probably the movie is terrible but so what? They're all terrible. Here's the backstory as to why Andrej from Midnight's Edge thinks that the real reason for the shelving is about the #Woke path the film was intended to commit the DC movie universe to. Yesterday I reported that David Zaslav, CEO of Discovery Warner, had fired female CEO Ann Sarnov and had replaced her not with a White Man but with... nobody. He just fired her, and replaced her with no one, deciding that what she had been doing simply did not need to be done by anyone. And what was she doing? Well, Andrej says she was pushing Feminist Agenda into movies. Specifically, he says she was the motivating force behind the master plan to eliminate the "problematic" figures of the troublesome, toxically-masculine figures of Superman and Batman from the DC Extended Universe, and replace them with... Supergirl and Batgirl. Note that the Robert Pattison Batman movie exists in its own separate Batman universe where there are no other superheroes or real superpowers so that isn't affected. This refers to the crossover universe, the "Justice League" universe. And in that universe, Batman was going to be replaced by Batgirl, and Superman by Supergirl. Now, I don't think this is only about agenda: Ben Affleck simply does not want to play Batman ever again, and is only playing him in short appearances to finish up his contract, and DC cannot come to terms with fan favorite Henry Cavill, who wants a multipicture deal and a firm commitment to make standalone Superman movies. Maybe it's a mix of both Feminist Agenda and the brilliant idea of "Let's just replace the male actors with female ones, who work for 70% of the male actors' salaries!" The plan goes like this: In the Flash movie, due to time-travel and multiverse-crossing nonsense, the Michael Keaton Batman enters the Justice League Universe and gets to share screen time with the Ben Affleck Batman. But the Ben Affleck Batman dies, making the older, retired Michael Keaton Batman the official, and only, Batman of the Justice League universe. Being older and retired, his main role will be to serve as a Mr. Miyagi like mentor to his replacement, the race-swapped Batgirl. Meanwhile, the Flash movie also introduced Supergirl (also race-swapped, if you can believe that!). She will be replacing Superman. Henry Cavill isn't coming back to film a death scene, so they'll just have to claim he went back to Krypton but died on the way back to his home planet. When Zaslav -- or whoever the source for this story -- says that the Batgirl movie will irreparably damage the DC brand, he's almost certainly not just talking about the film's quality, which is, of course, almost certainly down to the low level we've come to expect from DC. He's also talking about this movie establishing that Batman -- the real one, the active one -- and Superman are dead in this universe and have been replaced by Younger, More Diverse Female Replacements Who Are Superior In Every Way, Bigot. Which he suspects won't play as well with the mostly-male comic book movie audience as Girlboss feminist CEOs might. Activist Twitter lunatics demand that Hollywood make movies for them... and then never actually see these movies. They just want the movies taken away from straight men, whom they hate with the intensity of a burning cross. Andrej further speculates that if Zaslav is willing to #cancel a $70 or probably $100 million movie just to save some of the remaining brand value of DC, he's probably also willing to #cancel the $200 million Flash movie, which both sets up all of this #Woke crap -- in fact, the movie hardly seems to have any other purpose except to set up the future #Woke assumptions of the DC universe -- and also stars a violent, woman-strangling groomer lunatic. The Ace of Spades Decision Desk is ready to make the call: The Flash movie will also be cancelled, decision to be announced within the next two weeks. Ethan Van Sciver points out that feminists are whining and complaining (no wait, there's more, that's not the story) that this Batgirl movie was cancelled, but that the woman-strangling, underage-girl-grooming Ezra Miller's Flash movie has not been cancelled yet. Which is, you know: A rare good point from the feminists. Which makes it even more likely the Flash will be cancelled. Jezebel -- the AllahPundit of film commentary -- also suspects... racism.
Although Variety's sources say the decision to axe the project wasn't due to quality, I have to wonder if the studio would really cut a $90 million movie altogether solely because of a sudden strategy pivot. $90 million is, like, a lot of money!! The "badassery" quote certainly raises a question or two about possible cringey "girlboss" lines and plot points, but still, just scrapping the entire project--starring, written, and directed by women and people of color--seems... dramatic. All the more so given other projects Warner Bros. still appears to be moving forward with: Ezra Miller's The Flash, for instance, remains slated for a 2023 release. This, of course, is despite how Miller is accused of grooming teens and going on the run with an Indigenous teen whose parents have accused Miller of grooming their child. Miller has been missing for almost two months now, evading being served court papers. Trouble started brewing for Miller earlier this year when they had several run-ins with law enforcement on vacation in Hawaii, allegedly starting fights, breaking into guests' hotel rooms, and making threats to other tourists. Warner Bros. has reportedly been weighing how to handle Miller's upcoming movie given their recent behavior--but it certainly hasn't pulled the plug on the project. Nevertheless, the studio clearly had no trouble throwing out a movie starring an Afro-Latinx heroine. Grace, her fellow cast-mates, and others who worked on Batgirl have yet to speak out on what exactly happened, and we all have lots and lots of questions.The Ace of Spades Decision Desk stands by its call.

I watched the new Doctor Strange "In the Multiverse of Wokeness" last night. Wtf? It did, but it didn't have great legs. It made a lot (no doubt), but not as much as it could have.
Thor 4 I was convinced would pull a billion worldwide without trying, but it's stalling around $700,000,000. I imagine it might get to $800 million.
Are these failures? No, not at all. Are they meeting expectations? No, they're not. And let's not forget Eternals that made only $402 million worldwide, which probably represented an actual loss on the investment. The MCU is in a very precarious situation.

So why did it do so well? For one thing Sam Raimi, who is a fan favorite and real talent. For another, Dr Strange was really liked and so is Bandersnatch Cummerbund. And this looked like the film that would actually give Phase Four some meaning and was important in the storyline (although it was not). So people went hoping they'd get old MCU and got new MCU without much Dr Strange and a pointless odd storyline and crappy writing.
And Sam Raimi tried to make a movie then got stomped all over by the studio, again. You'd think he would have learned his lesson after Spider-Man 3.

The first Wonder Woman movie did well. The sequel, however, was not well received. Aquaman and Shazam were both popular, and are getting sequels.
That's pretty much it for DC successes.
Marvel's been slipping lately in audience returns.
Sony did well -again - with their last Spiderman movie. I've heard the Venom sequel was well-received. But Morbius bombed. And then it got rereleased to bomb again.

Batgirl, and especially Robin, were always intended to be sidekicks to Batman. Making them the central point of a movie much less the starring role is dumb.
That's because when you're fighting criminals, you need a big hulking guy who's trained for years in hand-to-hand combat. Robin was always intended to be a self-insert for the young readers to relate to. I mean come on...how much help is the average 10 year old in a fight?
Batgirl was added later in a reaction to charges of homosexuality by some idiot who wrote a book no one remembers. Later comics managed to fit her into canon fairly well despite the lunacy of a hot 110 lb woman going up against bad guys just because she has a utility belt and a batarang.

The MCU brand was built up very strongly over a decade. It takes more than Captain Marvel punching a dude because he told her to smile to tear that down.
It's not an overnight thing, but none of these movies (Spidey-excepted) are making the right kinds of money anymore. They're profitable (except Eternals which probably cost Disney a couple hundred million), but not the same kind as profitable. If things continue, they're going to be barely scraping even soon.
What's obvious is that it's the heroes introduced before Endgame that are driving sales. The ones after are less enticing for audiences. Plus, over-saturation with all the Disney+ shows.

Unless they diverge from the comics, she eventually ends up in a wheelchair playing a support role. So an absolute dead end for an action hero vehicle. The team of screenwriters for DC movies have been pretty awful at making original content so not following the published material seems ill-advised too.

The premise is intriguing and reasonable; Arnie didn't beat the Predator with superior strength and firepower either. It has the requisite grrrl power dialog in the preview but otherwise didn't look terrible.
I am not sure how honorable and skilled a hunt against stone age people is, but apparently that's where the Predator is going this time

Those male characters were only popular due to male privilege (white privilege) and thus their existence was at the expense of women (people of color) and at the expense of female characters (characters of color) that were *not* written. By undoing the male character (white character) and replacing him with a woman (woman of color), they are bringing about restorative justice, both by destroying the character that existed only because of privilege (thus destroying the manifestation of privilege) and also through reclaiming the colonized space by replacing the character with a new archetype that had been previously oppressed.
The old character existed only because of privilege and so replacing it with a new counter-colonial, counter-oppressive character of the same name is a meaningful realization of justice.

I saw it. It was fun, but very uneven, imo, with Taika Watiti going too far on some of the stuff that made the third Thor film fun. So I suspect word of mouth hurt it.
There was also a plot leak just before the film released. The leak wasn't entirely accurate, though, and the inaccuracies tended to be subtle ones that made the plot look worse (including the resolution). That also may have hurt the film's chances.

The problem with Batman has always been (in both the comics and movies) that he is supposed to not have super powers but they always have him doing things no human being could ever do and/or survive.
Also, at some point any rational person would simply kill the joker. After the 1,000th time the Joker escapes and kills people, you gotta just give up the "no killing" motto b/c it ain't working.

They don't WANT to make a good movie like the Fugitive. They want to make a movie that is remembered and enjoyed like the Fugitive that includes their messaging. That is why they have gone so hard after the comics and games. They want to use those as a vector to get their message out.
The thing is that their message is toxic to the medium. Remove attractive women that guys like to look at. Mess up characterization, not as the intent, but it is VERY hard to write a good character and story when your prime focus is getting out your message.
They CANNOT write heroes. They do not understand them. That is why Superman is so fucking difficult for them to do (or Captain America.) These are just decent men, who happen to have super powers. They are characters first, the story is about the characters, not the powers.

When it comes to Waititi, I think you need to separate his big comic book movies with his smaller things like Hunt for the Wilder People. His comic book stuff is about colors and hitting lowest common denominator. His smaller stuff is quieter and sweeter.
I don't care much about him, but he got a good performance out of Sam Neill, though, to be fair, Sam Neill could give a great performance in a Star Wars prequel.

This is why the Joker was better written when he was crazy and dangerous, but not crazy and a mass murdering psycho. He'd kill a person, threaten people with dangerous stuff, do crazy unknowable things, but he wasn't killing entire fairgrounds of little kids.
Joker back then was a menace, but he didn't require any moral person to end him to stop the horror. Today he's written so evil and bleak and awful that his every reappearance makes Batman look even more weak and terrible.
People had to one-up the previous Joker story every time and it spiraled into just horror.

I get that, but it makes the hero seem pretty lame when the same villain he catches time and again keeps at it. I know, I know, - it's just a comic book.
I guess it's like in action movies where the protagonist's kid or wife is kidnapped and the protagonist and the rest of the police force destroy half the town, kill tons of civilians in police chases and shoot-outs, and tons of un-named cops die in those chases and shoot outs all to save the wife/kid.
At the end of those movies I'm always like - was the death of 20 cops and 50 civilians plus the destruction of all of downtown worth saving your wife?

It's a replay of last year's tourist volcano. One of the volcano youtubers says that they've mapped the magma chamber this year and concluded that it's double the size of last year's. If that is correct then they may be able to predict exactly when it fizzles out.

It came from the Silver Age comics. Both he and Superman killed people not uncommonly in the early golden age stuff (Batman was a Shadow ripoff, he even carried a holstered pistol for a while). The Silver Age they toned back all that and came up with the "superheroes don't kill" motto which I think is a great one.

You write a good antagonist and he comes after the Oracle.
Act 1 is introductions of your cast and world
Act 2, you have Oracle do her talking and camera thing which breaks the plans of the antagonist
Act 3, the antagonist begins figuring out what went wrong while the Oracle has a physical relapse of some sort, has to go to doctor, etc
Act 4 is Oracle realizing someone is tracking her and playing cat and mouse covering her tracks
Act 5 is the physical confrontation
Totally doable and not rocket science. And that's without using all the story lines from the comics, which you could use for story ideas.

The thing is, back when they knew how to write comics, one of the main themes they used was the illusion of change. They'd have a special issue where Spider-man quit and took off his costume, but he'd be back the next issue. Bad guys got caught but came back when someone had a story to tell about that bad guy. Nothing really changed; Sue and Reed Richards got married and had a kid in the 60s; the kid is still a toddler. Kitty Pryde was 13 1/2 years old for 10 years.
It works because comics were a medium people picked up, read and threw away, they weren't considered hot commodities to collect and re-read or put in a graphic novel collection. They didn't care that much about continuity because each issue was its own story.
Now... all that's been forgotten.

He is growing like a weed. He gained 1.5 lbs. in his first month with me, about a 25% increase. At only 5 months he already looks like a very small adult cat!

I saw Vengeance this past weekend, BJ Novak's directorial debut.
It was a couple of decisions away from greatness. I wanted to love it so much, but those couple of decisions held it back a fair bit. He needed a writing partner to go through that script of his and iron things out.

THIS. I have been thinking for a while about a phenomena I have observed for about two decades. Everyone hates or likes something because everyone else hates or likes something. However, there may be good things in the show or game that NEVER get mentioned and are just thrown out with the bathwater. Also, a lot of the most strident defenders or critics of something never seem to have actually played or watched the thing. I respect a critics position (if he agrees with me) but I do that AFTER I have formed my own opinion.

Yeah he was terrific in the animated series (so was Harley Quinn who just annoys me now). Hamill's Joker is both chilling and funny and pathetic and serious at the same time. He's great at it, but of course the writing helps, too.

The premise is, Selina Kyle hangs up her suit and ends up married (or not actually married could go either way) Bruce Wayne (big scandal). They have a kid, and then Selina vanished. The public assumption is Catwoman took Bruce Wayne for a chump and bailed. Nobody actually knows what happened to her, she's just vanished.
Kid figures out that her dad is/was Batman, and after growing up in the shadow of the whole living scandal thing, thinks this would be an awesome thing to do/be. Bruce thinks that this is an incredibly bad idea. She's not ready for that, and the Joker will kill her. (He's right btw.)
She doesn't listen, and this ends up in the Joker figuring out both who she is, and who Batman is, and realizing, why yes if he kills her horribly, that will get at the Batman.
This culminates in Bruce realizing the only way to stop this is if he kills the Joker. Since Batman does not kill, he abandons the cowl and ends up killing the Joker as Bruce Wayne in a cataclysmic fight. Then turns himself in for life in prison.

The premise is, Selina Kyle hangs up her suit and ends up married (or not actually married could go either way) Bruce Wayne (big scandal). They have a kid, and then Selina vanished. The public assumption is Catwoman took Bruce Wayne for a chump and bailed. Nobody actually knows what happened to her, she's just vanished.
Kid figures out that her dad is/was Batman, and after growing up in the shadow of the whole living scandal thing, thinks this would be an awesome thing to do/be. Bruce thinks that this is an incredibly bad idea. She's not ready for that, and the Joker will kill her. (He's right btw.)
... Then turns himself in for life in prison.

It came from the Silver Age comics. Both he and Superman killed people not uncommonly in the early golden age stuff (Batman was a Shadow ripoff, he even carried a holstered pistol for a while). The Silver Age they toned back all that and came up with the "superheroes don't kill" motto which I think is a great one.

Yeah its not that Maverick is such a great movie, its just that its a pretty fun movie that finally delivers what fans want: fun. Its not trying to make a grand statement, its not trying to subvert expectations, its just entertainment.
The ENORMOUS success of that film (which has made Tom Cruise even more stupidly rich) should be a huge tell for movie studios: people are starved for just fun entertainment.

The rule of thumb is movies typically have an ad budget equal to their production budget. So they don't start making money until after that.
The 2007 and 2009 movies are just breaking even domestically. By the 2011 movie, they're slipping fast. The 2014 movie was 210MM production and only 245MM domestic, which is a DISASTER if you don't factor in the worldwide box office numbers.
That's one reason those movies get even dumber and more action-y over time. They're not appealing to an English speaking audience anymore. It's all flash.

I'm not sure what comics of Punisher you've read but I read him since his beginning (when he was a bad guy Spider-Man fought who tried to literally shoot a Jaywalker). He's not a good guy at all. Not even a little. He's a total bastard who kills bad guys. There may have been a print run you read where someone tried to make him more likable and nicer, but the greatest bulk of his existence in the comics makes it pretty clear.

I saw about 10 mins of Bill Burr the other night, some Netflix special that my oldest wanted to watch. He's another one, like early Colbert, who I would call a "white-conservative minstrel." The Punisher is a Mack Bolan knock off who avenges the death of innocents, like his family's murder. I started with the Steven Grant series, on thorugh Carl Potts editing it, with Mike Baron. Grant recots the stupid 'shooing jaywalkers' bullshit Conway wrote. From there to (1986) to 1995 I consider the canonical Punisher. Before they turned him into a zombie and other bullshit.

And in spite of the fact that I'm not super typical, I think statistics shows that most women, who might be more interested in a woman hero or lead are not into the super hero genre. If I want to see a tough woman character I want the Gunsmoke Miss Kitty model. Tough w/o any BS about being stronger than the Marshall.

Bill Burr and his Wife made a Documentary about Patrice O'Neal and because the Bill Burr's wife HATES Anthony Cumia didn't interview him or include him in the Documentary about Patrice's life and they were best friends.
Anthony and Patrice did a bit where Anthony wearing a NAZI helmet see's if a Taxi will pick him up vs a Black Man Patrice O'Neal. it's some of the funniest radio I have ever heard.

How awful did the Batfemale movie have to be to fail clearing a very low bar? One can only imagine. I suspect something else had to make this movie too toxic to risk. Sacrificing and using young girls isn't enough for Hollywood: so what is?

True, mostly, though I liked Susan quite a bit in the early novels as well. She and Hawk are manifestations of different parts of Spenser's personality, the way McCoy and Spock are of Kirk's.

As someone in this business it's hilarious how people somehow think that a white kid walks on set and the next day is made a director. Most work 18 hour days for slave wages, for years, before maybe moving to something better. These low level jobs almost always white or Asian kids, because the others walk in on day one and think they should be the director, and quit days later after minimal hard work.
