40 Many of the images in this work should be read as symbolizing the reality of mortality. The skull is the most obvious, as is the hour glass. The spent candle with a flame about to go out and the bubble are others. Even the trompe l'oeil image of the canvas falling off its frame could be one. It is old or not well stretched and fastened. I'd be interested what the letter says.

44 Absolutely remarkable skill. His still life paintings combine incredible realism with myth, legends and proverbs. He also has a sense of humor in the way he shows that it is a painting. (One of his other works is the back of a framed canvas. That's comedy!)

I need to see more of his paintings. Thanks for using this one, CBD.

50 Maybe it's my classical illiteracy, but I'm always irritated by these Where's Waldo puzzles. Give me a clue of what you're doing, otherwise, it's just an unattractive painting of a bunch of random items. 127 83 According to the internet: Nautilus shell is a symbol of nature's grace in growth, expansion, and renewal. It is also a symbol of order amidst chaos as reflected in its spiral precision. And a symbol of strength.
Posted by: Iris at August 01, 2022 09:46 AM (foa6+)

Thanks for this. The wine jug in back(?) and the pipe in the ashtray could be symbols of life's pleasures and luxuries. The letter's meaning depends on what it says. These are all fleeting tho, "a chasing after the wind." The shell then becomes renewal?, symbolizing the eternal order of all things? Vanitases are religious paintings. In among the reminders of death, perhaps a image of hope for resurrection and God's ordained order from the chaos of life?

Hmmm.

199 These Old Med School Sayings come from a novel of the 1950s, Not As a Stranger, about a young man's journey through med school and on into practice.

Many years ago, though, I discovered in my mother's papers a brochure of what we'd call memes today: cat pictures with doctor or nurse-themed captions. One featured a Siamese kitten with its mouth wide open as if yelling. Caption (a la surgeon to nurse): "Don't give me what I ask for, give me what I need!"

I kept the brochure, but now I don't know where it is.

People that tattoo skulls or have them as decorations (not talking trophies or old cow skulls with horns found in a desert). I'm not exactly a religious person but how some people use skulls as decorations/tatoos kind of creep me out. I guess they can symbolize a multitude of things to people. I've always associated it with death and some sort of acknowledgment of evil. Something always made me feel that if I had a tattoo or skull an end table, I'm tempting or inviting something not good. I guess I'm a big pussy when it comes to certain things, this would be one. No skulls for me.

286 she wants to do reconstructive plastic surgery we'll see if THAT holds up. a lot of years of training for that. but she's a really good artist and she's been interested in it for ages. nothing rattles her or grosses her out either. in middle school she was getting those weird "suture fake human skin" kits from amazon and trying to do the smallest possible suturing.
=
When the wife was training they tried to get her to go into surgery specifically on kids with burns. They have a hard time filling those positions. Lots of burn out. She did a rotation on burn service. She opted for primary care. Plastics is more than just boob jobs and tummy tucks, but that's where the money is. In the coming years it will be all about turning people in to lizards or tigers or whatever stupid thing they think would make them feel better about themselves.

297 I actually do have one skull artwork. Decades ago my sister did a gravestone rubbing of the Susanna Jayne headstone. It's incredible, but protected against rubbings now.

Atop it, bones by an hourglass (tempus fugit, man's mortality). The main square has angels in the top corners over bats in the bottom corners (heaven over hell). Death is in the middle (skeleton with scythe) but the laurel signifies Christ's victory over death. The skeleton is holding the sun & moon (moon's been chipped away over the years). I guess the snake symbolizes eternity. Check it out: https://tinyurl.com/5d4t76fm

Even Lloyd's Klingon captain in Search for Spock is amazing -- in a serious performance he makes us realize that Klingons just don't think like humans. (In fact his character didn't think like most Klingons; I always had the impression his crew thought he was nuts.)

Posted by: Count de Monet at August 01, 2022 10:50 AM (4I/2K)

You're right, that is a great movie with a great cast! Of course they're doing a comic remake of "Strangers on a Train" by Hitchcock, but they make that hilarious by talking about "Strangers on a Train" throughout the entire film. "Criss Cross! Criss Cross!" And DeVito's mother, "Momma", is one of the best horrible characters ever seen on film.
