The Morning Rant: “Record Heat!” (When Heat Waves Are Reported By The Statistically Ignorant)

Every summer, there are heat waves somewhere on the globe, with “record heat” recorded in multiple locations. Along with these heat waves, the prophets of climate apocalypse warn that all these “extreme” new temperature records are proof of global warming.

I apologize for throwing math at you this morning, but I can only take so much statistical ignorance without wanting to respond.

First off, temperature records have been kept, depending on location, for about 100 to 140 years. Let’s split the difference and call it 120 years on average. Each weather station has a historical “record high” for each day of the year, and also a “record low” for each day of the year. Therefore, with 365 record high and 365 record low temperatures at each station over the past 120 years, an equal distribution (e.g. 365 divided by 120) would mean that each station records about 3 record highs and 3 record lows every year.

How many times have you heard a fear-mongering journalist or politician hyping “an all-time record high for this date at the South Succotash weather station.” So what? Statistically, anything less than three record highs per year at South Succotash is below average.

And how many weather stations are there in the US? NOAA’s domestic database is composed of almost 15,000 weather stations.

So with 15,000 weather stations across the US, and with each expected to have on average 3 record highs per year, there should be approximately 45,000 record daily highs per year in the United States.

Any MSM journalist reading this is probably already lost and unable to comprehend that “new record highs” doesn’t simply mean “hotter than it used to be,” but if they’re still with me, their follow-up question might be: “But what about meteorological stations that are suddenly recording an all-time record high temperature, ever?”

Here’s a recent story to that effect.

European cities set all-time temperature records amid unrelenting heat wave [CNN - 7/15/2022]

New records have been set as temperatures topped 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) across much of Spain and Portugal Wednesday amid a persistent heat wave across western Europe.
On Wednesday, Zamora set its own record after reaching 41.1 degrees Celsius (105.98 degrees Fahrenheit), according to climate statistician Max Herrera. Soria set a record of 38.7 degrees Celsius (101.66 degrees Fahrenheit) that same day.

OK, let’s do some math again. There are over 22,000 European meteorological reporting stations across Europe and the Mediterranean. 22,000 stations divided by 120 years means that on average there should be 183 European weather stations that report an all-time, record-high temperature, each and every year.

Of course, “average” doesn’t mean “normal,” some years have nasty heat waves with lots of new records, and others are milder with no new records.

And don’t forget, when there are record low temperatures, the climatistas still blame “climate change” for “extreme weather.” Everything I wrote about record highs up above applies to record lows – there are just as many.

Aside from the math up above, don’t forget just how dishonest climate science has become. Remember how NOAA was caught systematically altering historical temperature records to create warming trends that did not exist before they made the adjustments?

NOAA has made repeated "adjustments" to its data, for the presumed scientific reason of making the data sets more accurate.
Nothing wrong with that. Except, all their changes point to one thing — lowering previously measured temperatures to show cooler weather in the past, and raising more recent temperatures to show warming in the recent present.

Also, bad data collection is accepted in climate science if it serves the agenda. The weather station in Pinhao, Portugal just recorded an all-time temperature record of 47 degrees Celsius. Take a look at the weather station. It’s sitting atop a stone wall, next to a brick wall. Any data collected there is worthless, because it’s capturing heat stored in the rocks and bricks.

How many other “all time records” are being recorded in urban areas with weather stations adjacent to stone, rock, and parking lots?

The most primitive religious belief of humans underlies the climate hysteria – that bad weather is caused by sinful human behavior, and if the virtuous don’t stop the sinners, then apocalypse is imminent.

It’s way past time to stop listening to the statistically ignorant evangelists of climate science, and start mocking their ignorance and credulousness instead.

25 Besides the doctoring, there's also the the, shall we say, optimistic level of precision with the available instrumentation.

"Ocean temperature in the Atlantic rose by a staggering 0.2 degrees over five years" is the kind of stories that leads to. There aren't enough buoys, they don't stay in place well enough, they aren't online and reporting over long enough time periods, etc. Divining hundredths or thousandths of a degree's worth of difference from such sparse instrumentation and then using it to define regulatory requirements crosses the line into academic and policy fraud, but they do it routinely. Even if all the buoys (and the land-side stations, for that matter) were well-placed, plentiful and always online, there aren't enough of them to measure changes to the level of precision that they report.

Space-based observation (weather satellites) are probably much better solutions to the climate data problem, but those all too often show the wrong kind of evidence.

I distinctly remember summers when I was a kid when temps regularly broke a hundee. You almost never see 100+ temps in NYC any more.

Redin has a "climate risks" section provided by some climatology big data outfit. In that section, they go over predicted climate-related events - number of severe thunderstorms, drought probability, etc. - for the year 2050. They put this up with a straight face (presumably).

Local weather reporting bats about .850 on predicting storm activity for the day after tomorrow, yet these jokers put out that for the house you're looking at, you should expect 23 severe storms in 2050. It's preposterous and stupid, yet presumably there's a market for this idiocy (that, or Redfin is looking to up its ESG score).

54 The "adjustments" that NOAA made to the temperature record of the US that lowered past temperatures were adjusted based on the CO2 induced warming hypothesis. CO2 was lower in the past, so the temperatures were lowered.

Then they use it to "prove" the the CO2 induced warming hypothesis. They admitted it, in writing, at some point and I've seen it, but I doubt I could find a link.

It's not deliberate exactly, but a lot of them are in places that were shaded and are now surrounded by miles of blacktop, like airports. They *are* slow-walking relocating them.

Also, satellite temperature data is now a thing, and NOAA is busy "adjusting" it to agree with global warming.

We to totally account for those changes by manipulating the raw data with super-accurate adjustment factors. Darndest thing, they still show a rise! Oddly, the raw data from stations that AREN'T impacted by human construction and such don't seem to show the same rise, so we "adjust" that data, too, because it's obviously off.

79 Saw a couple funny maps from the UK over the weekend. They were weather maps of the UK, one from a few years ago and one current. They used little sun graphics and temp readings to show the high heat in various location around the UK in the earlier map but in the current map they just painted the entire country red along with the temperatures.

The funny part was that every single temp reading in the older map was higher than the current map.

Oh, there's probably some record. It's pretty easy to find records. If it isn't the one-day highest temperature, it's the highest temperature on that date, or the that day moved the 50-year daily average to it's highest point ever, or there were more weather stations in the area reporting over X degrees than ever before, or the hottest 2:00 PM hour recorded, or ...

You can find records anywhere if you're willing to decontextualize or change the scale arbitrarily. "This is the greatest song ever written about a 25 year-old man getting laid off from a coal mine in August of 1932 and then having to go work for the TVA instead."

Duh, hot. When I lived in FL, the weather gauge at Tampa Int Airport showed a daily precipitation of some minor amount. Never saw any elsewhere. Someone finally went out to look and found seagulls perching on the thing. So, a tenth of an inch of seagull poop was being recorded.

I have two digital thermometers in my bedroom and they never match. The temperature varies between .2° and 1.7°. I also have a mercury thermometer on my porch sitting next to a digital thermometer. The digital thermometer always reads higher by 1 to 2°

CA sort of took care of the strike. CA made it unnecessary for truckers to strike, because, due to their insane regulations, took 70K truckers off the road.

What I'd like to see, though, is truckers demand a premium for delivery into big cities. Now that would make things very interesting.

147 While watching my local weather, one of my favorite things to look for is the difference between the average and record high temperatures. In the Houston area, it’s not unusual for average to record highs in the summer to be as close as 4 degrees apart.

That tells me we don’t vary the usual highs very much, probably because we sit on very high humidity and getting much above normal takes a lot of heat to bake out the water first. It also means it doesn’t take much of a change to set a new record.

This piece on how frequently “record” highs get set is something new to me, but it makes a lot of sense. People don’t understand statistics very well.

Am I the only one who finds this extremely suspicious? Not ONE officer among 400 had any 'toxic masculinity' to say "fuck this, I'm not waiting any longer, let's roll"? Not ONE?

I run my own prosumer grade weather station. It pumps info up to The Weatherunderground and Ambient Weather. The hoops and hurdles you have to go through to get it onto a NOAA National Weather Service site is absurd. There's a huge QoS debate going on about how NWS seems to arbitrarily flag stations as having "data quality issues." Read that to mean "we don't agree with your instruments." Nothing the government pushes with regards to climate is rooted in fact.

238 Homes in warm and hot climates in the southern states were (were) built with ventilation, and many ways to keep cool. You see old homes in Florida that are open air homes. Now the condo I sometimes stay at is all sealed up, and if the A/C goes out, your hot as hell. A/C units in Florida have to replaced about every few years, ask me how I know...I have the billings that show another 6K every time, and the old ones look beat up after just a few years. Ours is on the roof, and they have to hire a crane to move it.

Watt's Up With That did a long series (several years) showing the placement of weather stations and how nearly every urban station is placed in a spot where its going to pick up higher readings than it should. When combined with WUWT's stories showing how the national weather services adjust the temperatures of weather stations outside urban areas up to match the urban ones and you can see the fraud unfold before your eyes.

Each station would have to have a record high and record low for a given day so that should be about the rate which "records" are produced(independent of the climate doing anything special) though we'd expect it to decline over time as we built a larger data set.

The 400 number, and from numerous agencies, just baffles me.

None of them thought to ask "Why are 4 HUNDRED of us here when likely just 4 of us could take down one school shooter?" or "Why did they call 4 HUNDRED of us here to... stand around and do nothing?"

Not to mention, who the hell sent the word out to all the different agencies to send a combined 400 officers?

I would bet that if the school simply sent calls out to all parents with firearms to come help, they would have arrived and put down the shooter within minutes. Didn't one mother defy the on-site law enforcement and go inside to rescue her children?

Over 600 students at the school.

Potentially 1200 parents could have shown up, which would have required a lot of officers to detain them while they listened to their kids screaming out.

the only problem with your plan is that Lake Erie is a fairly shallow lake and when there is a couple of years of drought the levels drop quite a bit and so you have less volume to absorb, what in drought conditions is a higher average heating time frame. More sunlight, less cloud.

its a wildly complex system and you can't take its temperature in one place at one time, or even multiple places and times and come up with a meaningful number to apply to the whole thing over time.

And we had been living there since just before I started school in 1960. Iron, and everything below it, are the result of fusion reactions inside of stars. It takes more energy to fuse Fe than you get out, so that's the end of that.

Above Fe, the elements are only formed in supernova explosions, which are spewed forth. Thus, literally stardust. The calcium in your bones was made by an (much larger than our sun) exploding star.

Thorium reactors are a pie-in-the-sky stalking horse used by the Greentards to delay the use of perfectly safe and efficient uranium reactors for energy. I know they can work, but we don't any standardized designs, and we don't have a vast supply of easily-mined thorium, like we do for uranium.

Build the uranium reactors now, get them to work putting power into the grid, and then add the thorium reactors into the mix if the tech matures and cheap thorium becomes available.

There were recent reports of "record high temps" in the Pacific NW where retreating snowpack/glaciers exposed entire villages of previously unknown human inhabitants...and the gist of the story was that these temps were now going to make the preservation/study of the sites harder. Totally devoid of the disconnect from logic in the stories.

I saw someone on a financial forum discussing how they wanted to bury their pool because they think its "just going to get hotter" from global warming and it will be unaffordable to keep it. Even if you want to believe the earth is 1 degree hotter than it was 100 years ago, its absurd to think it effects available water.

I really think much of this "drought" talk is self-inflicted and just the enviro left gaslighting us.

We have plenty of water, it's how that water is managed.
