Daily Tech News 3 July 2022

Top Story

  • One of the things I want to do fairly soon is replace my four Synology boxes with one new one. They're from 2012 and 2013 and so are the drives - I rescued them when work was going to throw them out.

I was planning on a new DS1821+ but when I looked there were none to be had anywhere. That was going to give me a nice topic for a rant but when I looked again they were available so now I'm just confused.

It's not a perfect device - the default network configuration is 4 x 1Gb interfaces which is just irritating - but filled with 12TB drives it would give me the same capacity as the existing four units without the drive failures and performance limitations of decade-old hardware.

  • Meta's Novi - formerly Diem - formerly Libera from formerly Facebook - is toast. (CNet)

This was a technically promising crypto project backed by over a dozen industry leaders that withered and died because (a) all the industry leaders hate each other and (b) absolutely everyone hates Facebook.

24 Family asked me if I was traveling home for the holiday, and I thought, that $75 fuel cost I could put toward buying a new grill. With free shipping. And with 7/4 being national BBQ ribs day and Independence Day, I'm looking at some hard nap time.

I may have to dig deep in my pockets and get another couple of baby back rib racks for the road trip.

Also, I'm not sure I need a new gaming rig, but I might need an office type rig to get hooked up with a Joe Biden mid-term depression job. These times are getting tough. Rain, rain, rain.

30 And I really do need to wash and spray-wax the car, though it's a 50% chance we'll get rain this pm. Around here you got to fit in outdoor activities *around* the worst of the heat. So do the rest of you, I expect, but I have to deal with that for the majority of the year.

But some of you have snow. So there's that.

42 Pixy, small world.

I just turned on my very first NAS within the past hour...a DS1821+. Still in stock on AMZ (USA) but I guess that doesn't help you

8x18TB EXOS X18 drives in RAID6. Installed a 10GbE network card (10Gtek X540-10G-2T) due to the irritating built in 1GbE interfaces. Neither drives nor network card are on the compatibility list but they seem to work out of the box. Got a cheap TP-Link TL-SX105 unmanged five port switch and card for my PC to go with it.

CrystalDiskMark tests at 1213 MB/s sequential so 10GbE is the bottleneck. I wasn't expecting that but I wasn't willing to spend for 25 GbE with all the SFP mess anyway. Card in the NAS has two 10GbE ports but from what I've read link aggregation doesn't help for single client (my PC).

Any tips for a first time NAS user, especially security? Still getting up to speed on the DSM and such. Complex but fairly intuitive. This is just a home file server. Storing movies ripped from my Bluray collection and copied over from the PC. Playback with a Dune HD Real Vision media player connected to the TV. So no apps or media server needed on the Synology...just simple network file storage.

43 I'm interested to see the generational improvements in GPUs. It seems like there is a real improvement there, but there will likely be relatively slack demand due to all of the used mining cards hitting the market around the same time. Hopefully I can snag a nice 4080 or 7900XT for less than a kidney

44 Pixy, I have to replace my RTX 2080 Super (it ramps up the fans and turns of the picture if I try to do anything 3d, ie Skyrim or LotRO) and the only solution through the company I got my PC from, since I'm under labor, but not parts warranty, is to ship them the box and replace the part *at the current market rate*.

For half that (and more importantly not shipping my computer across the country), I think I'd prefer to replace it with a RTX 3060 TI, which appears to be superior in the benchmarks run on it (per an article you linked yesterday), but they didn't test it in 4k (which I don't understand as Nvidia's site says it will do 8k). I have 750W power supply so that shouldn't be an issue.

I had more surplus cash two and a half years ago so the 3060 TI is probably as high as I can manage. I'm just wondering if this is sensible (all I really need it to do is Skyrim AE 4k at 60fps and not burn out in the foreseeable future).

45 I once rescued a computer from my work trash (e-waste) and took it home; it had been my former computer and was still perfectly good. A day later, I got an email that essentially said, "Return the Computer or you will be terminiated", so I returned it. It was such a waste. This time, they decided to break stuff inside (e.g. snap the DRAM SIMMs in two).

Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at July 03, 2022 11:25 AM (ynpvh)

46 When I was laid off last year (366 days ago today) they let me keep the computer I had been using. I'm typing on it now, in fact. So, when they rehired me five weeks later, they had to give me a new computer. The good ones were out of stock, so they gave me a, um, less good computer.

They also let me keep the severance pay. That's life in a big company.

47 I like my DS418play - 3x4TB and a hot spare, 40% full - but the idea of moving/merging that much data from multiple NAS to a new mega system makes me a bit twitchy! Is there a good, non-klugey way to do it that doesn't take a decade???

I can picture the tech checking to see if mgmt was watching, breaking some celery stalks, and taking it home for himself...
