Seasons Fleeting Cafe

Swiss winter scene, by Senna Relax

Driving away an alligator with a frying pan.

I think this critter is real and not CGI, but it's harder and harder to tell. Update: Gourmand Du Jour identifies this mystery critter as a Pallas's cat or manaul, which is a pet you can get when you reach level 30 as a Hunter in World of Warcraft. But is also apparently a real animal.

Content warning: Has a bit of surprise vermin in it.

A picnic table with a view.

Dog is a champ at balancing a ball on his nose! Or, alternately, he is an abused animal whose owner glues things to his snout. Your choice. I think the first one is cuter.

Guy drives off a boa which had a fawn in a deathlock. Did he do it to save the fawn, or just to clear the road because he was late for his tanning appointment?

Blended fur-family.

Time lapse photography of fog practically boiling over the sea.

Best dancing boy.

This parrot is putting the moves on this girl, and totally winning.

Gun does impressions of... people's running forms. Some of these are pretty good.

Steven King's Roost.

Don't celebrate until the race is won.

Dog going crazy as his owner uses all of his favorite Trigger Words on a fake phone call.

Apollo 22: The Duck Mission.

Nice little jogging path:

Always swim with a buddy:

18 Found the source of Squats contention that Baris saying Republicans are going to lose. Just watched Baris tweeting out what he did today. It was an emotional response to a rumor that someone passed him with no backup.

Baris is a good pollster, but he is overly emotional. He will say things that his numbers don't support.

I chose the latter and have never looked back. And I've never known a woman that can cook better than me (I know some that can bake better). In Virginia 1994, we were without electricity for four days after an ice storm. We cooked on our Weber grill in our screen porch and spent the day with friends who had a wood-burning fireplace. We slept at home under down comforters without a problem. Since it was so cold, we didn't sweat or smell too badly!

HOWEVER, when I was about 7, Hurricane Agnes blew through the Baltimore area. The sound of the wind scared me to pieces--I still freak out when the wind is high.

Keeping extra things on hand isn't even about out-lasting the current crisis. Its about having enough things on hand to wait out the other idiots that don't have the luxury of waiting out the current crisis.

Some of those idiots have very long-winded reasons for why its a waste of time and money to stockpile those extra things. They're very smart. They'll tell you so. Even when you don't ask.

Yep.

I read a hit piece on DeSantis, that basically said this is all calculated by him - a political move designed to curry favor from the masses.

It never occurred to the writer that such a strategy would only work if the masses really, really wanted to be "pandered to" in such a way. I've watched, for over a decade, while the Left went through every trope from 1930s Germany. Every single damn one. Been called a crack pot for making the comparisons.

But it never occurred to me that the Left would play the role of the German Communists. And that's exactly what they're doing. Without a clue of how that turns out.

199 I thought the Reichstag fire really was started by the Dutch commie. There's a book on it I haven't yet read.

Of course it's the malign use to which the incident was put that was the point.

I suppose in the weak minds of the remarkably ignorant and dumb people dominating the Beltway and the media, they thought Jan. 6 could work the same way. But countries, populations, and times very different. Of course the "seizure of power" by the Nazis was a multi-step process, and they hardly limited themselves to whatever "public opinion" would support.

There are animals that can survive long falls. They're light enough compared to their cross-section that their terminal velocity isn't literally terminal. But that's only critters up to about the size of a mouse or hamster.

Some slightly-larger animals can survive long falls by splaying themselves out into a natural parachute; squirrels (even non-flying squirrels) can do this.

A housecat might land on it's feet, but it won't be going much further.

219 Well ammo, booze, and canned goods are in pretty good shape here. Real issue (and it's earthquakes I consider, not too worried about general civil disorder) is water and sanitation. This is something I think few ever think about.

Heat a non-issue, in a place with a mean low of 63 and mean high of 74, or something close to that.

But water. And sanitation. I've got a sanitation plan - but I have a big yard. What the hell are people in condos and apartments going to do?

Water. Storing very much is difficult. Neighbor's gotta pool - I've got plenty of calcium hypochlorite and filters, so, maybe a solution there.

Talk to your primary care provider. Tell them you'd like to have an emergency stash of your prescriptions. Other than controlled substances, this should not be a problem. 256 Preparation for natural disaster is largely coterminous with preparation for civil disorder, up to a point. Prudent to do as much of the former that you can, of course what that means varies wildly by location.

For earthquakes, it's the basics: power will be gone, water pressure will be gone, presumably retail commerce will be greatly reduced. Getting ready for that is sorta like prepping for the unlikely apocalypse many here fret over.

Maybe enormous amounts of ammo and plenty of platforms covers a bit of the disorder requirement?

I am near the 1st Infantry Division these days. Not terribly impressed. We have a lot of combat formations in the EU. Including our strategic reserve.

I know we try and cover Taiwan with the Navy, but they are in bad shape. The simplest answer would be to have the Japanese, South Koreans, and Taiwan all get nukes. Nuclear weapons keep the peace.

277 Trump proven unfit for power again
by Washington Examiner June 29, 2022 12:01 AM

Former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson's Tuesday testimony ought to ring the death knell for former President Donald Trump's political career. Trump is unfit to be anywhere near power ever again.

Hutchinson's resume alone should establish her credibility. The 25-year-old had already worked at the highest levels of conservative Republican politics, including in the offices of Sen. Ted Cruz (TX) and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (LA), before becoming a top aide for former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows.

316 Folks, start talking with the neighbors you can trust.
Not about what you have, but what you can plan on.

L-shaped ambushes are not the immediate solution to the big problems.

Those with critical drug needs have at most a 90 day supply. Then they die.

Posted by: NaCly Dog (u82oZ) at June 29, 2022 09:15 PM (u82oZ)

317 And that's just patently false. There comes a time when it's entirely prudent to panic. And summoning every ounce of energy you can to a single goal. Like getting out out before the door shuts behind you.

Or getting the Hell out of Germany if you are a Jew. Even if it means flipping the key to your home and business to the neighbor while you take the last boat to America.

There's always folks saying "don't panic". I'm sure they see it as a virtue. I'm also sure they ignore all the spots in the history books when panic is entirely justified.

Well basically the way to approach things is limited distribution and not telling people you have excess, unless you're trying to set yourself up as local head honcho(this too can be a reasonable course of action). If you want to use a modern reference, there's Venezuela. People will often be able to improvise or supply themselves imperfectly, so you don't need to be their sole supplier (which would immediately reveal your storage).

357 If you have never been fishing, give it a try. You can gear up with the basics cheap (think like Zebco combos) for fresh water. Learn fish preparation like smoking and canning. Learn fish types. Don't turn your nose up at less desirable fish, like carp, which are abundant (not bad smoked). I don't fish much, but I have the basic set up and a river full of fish a mile away.

It's more of a human capital and governance problem than infrastructure as far as the food goes. If we were so inclined, we could produce enough to feed the entire planet, let alone ourselves. The border issue promotes balkanization and lets the cartels in but isn't tightly tied to food issues.

381 Well it depends on your definition of "panic" I suppose.

The quote I referenced, I first heard it mentioned by a test pilot. Panic is not considered a desirable trait in that line of work. What he was saying was if you start flipping switches and stuff, you have to flip the correct ones. Take your time, paradoxically.

Or like Wyatt Earp said. "Speed is fine, but accuracy is final". I've been driven to do things that didn't make much sense at the time, almost to an obsession. Only later did I realize the wisdom.

387 Wildfire's the other plausible contingency here. Of course that's different - mostly "what the F can I toss in the car and haul ass with, quickly?". Have done a bit of prep for that, definitely need to flesh out the plan. A "go bag" of stupid personal items is easy. Most key documents/copies long in the safe deposit. Few will be shocked that the focus is on how many gunz can I quickly take. But it's reasonable. Not into "stuff", have very little in the way of "valuables", gunzz easily the most valuable small objects here. Family treasures/photos really the only other things I'd want.

A community of defenders can help.

If I put on my hat as a raider, then tax records show the good targets. Drone flights can scope out the defenses, if any.

Well there are two types of raids, though intended to grab stuff, and those intended to destroy. Problem with the latter is they can just start setting things on fire, and it's not implausible we'd see something on the scale of armies doing that. If an army is retreating doing scorched earth or Sherman is marching on you, not much you can do besides book it as fast as possible with what you've got.

412 There's a small zoo on top of a small mountain in Roanoke that has Pallas cats - or did when I was there 3-4 years ago. Then it was a grumpy dad in one cage, mom and one or two cubs in another so they'd be safe from dad. I don't think they're as tameable as ordinary cat-cats, Felis felis.

That's exactly what they look like. They're from Central Asia and adapted for the cold: really thick fur, and short ears so they won't get frostbit. Not sure why their eyes are so wide-set: they may have to depend more on sight and less on hearing and scent than other cats: wide-set eyes would help them judge distance when they're pouncing on their prey like evil Republicans.

Besides the well-known big cats - lion, tiger, leopard, cheetah, mountain lion - there are dozens of species of small and medium-size (e.g. bobcat, lynx) cats. The Pallas cat is the cutest of them all.

There was one major spice, can't remember, they kept its growing location a secret. Under pain of death. For years. Many spices go stale pretty quickly, and turn to sawdust. Many don't - cloves, cinnamon, cocoa, ginger, cardamom, whole nutmeg and others last a really long time.

The information included names, date of birth, gender, race, driver's license numbers, addresses, phone numbers, and criminal history for those who were granted or denied a concealed and carry weapons permit between 2011 to 2021.

Spice Islands maybe. Some ship crewmembers or captain, on a sailing ship could smell it from a nearby island - and had an "Aha!" moment and managed to take some plants back and clone them. Before that, they had a monopoly on the cultivation and sale. It was expensive as hell for that reason.

I say in all occasions panic is bad. You lose situational awareness.

Like in a fire you are fighting. You need to think on where your hose is going, your oxygen level, where the nearest or the best exits are, and where is your firefighting team.

You panic -- you lose.
