The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

I’m 80, and I’m going to do what I want.” John Davidson

Quote II

“There is no statutory ability for the City of New York to issue inconsistent laws permitting non-citizens to vote and exceed the authority granted to it by the New York State Constitution," New York State Supreme Court said in the decision

Quote III

Dedicated to the craft of gun making. Dedicated to your freedom. Quality, security, and the promise of this great country.

You want spite? Nose, face, meet knife, some assembly required.

The original charging fee was £80, but attendees complained so much that organizers lowered it to £50 for that partial charge.

“This service is for emergency use only,” the statement warned, “and cannot be guaranteed.”

Maybe you’re thinking this is no big deal, and I’m inclined to agree. You can’t just flip a switch and turn a rural area into a massive charging station for untold numbers of electric cars.

But you can flip a switch, so to speak, to turn on the diesel generator that powers those chargers.

Wait, what?

Yeah, those green batteries are kept powered by the farm’s diesel generator which is “switched on as and when it is required,” according to the report.

But wait just another moment because it gets even better.

“This system is thought to be better for the environment than installing a Tesla Supercharger.”

I’m not sure how to write a punchline here when the environmental movement just did.

Performing ONT research I do run across some interesting things. Did you know that the NYPD has its very own beekeepers Division?

June 27 (UPI) -- The New York Police Department said its beekeepers division was dispatched to a midtown Manhattan eatery over the weekend to remove 2,000 bees.

"The [bees] will now be relocated to an area where their pollenating skills will be put to good use," the official NYPD Twitter feed said Sunday.

Well it looked good on paper. Damn!

A new product recall is here to put a damper on your summer get-togethers: a light-up patio umbrella powered by solar panels and sold by Costco has been recalled following reports of the umbrella’s panels catching fire.

There is nothing quite like a relaxing summer kick-back with your loved ones—that is, until the party is interrupted by your umbrella bursting into flames. SunVilla’s Solar LED Market Umbrella, which was sold at retail giant Costco, was recalled in a joint filing by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Government of Canada on Thursday.

I love transparency. Don't you?

WAYLAND — Police Chief Sean Gibbons remains on leave and there is no time frame for a resolution as to when or if he will return to the job, acting Town Manager Stephen Crane said.

"Hopefully, we will have an update soon," Crane told the Daily News. "Speaking generally, there are certain matters that take time to get sorted out, and this is one of them."

Crane said he could not disclose why Gibbons is on leave, other than that it's a personnel matter. Lt. Ed Burman has served as acting chief since Gibbons was put on leave.

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance. Baffle them with bullshit and money.

In convenient timing for his upcoming reelection campaign, far-left California Gov. Gavin Newsom has struck a budget deal with the Democrat-controlled state legislature that includes handing out stimulus payments to voters in the name of “inflation relief.”

At the same time, lawmakers reportedly turned thumbs down on a suspension of the gas tax.

California reportedly has the highest gas tax in the country, clocking in at nearly 60 cents per gallon. According to the American Petroleum Institute, when state and federal taxation is factored in, it rises to about 87 cents per gallon in gas taxes.

Nancy Pelosi once again demonstrate she's a classy broad.

Update

The office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) responded after a newly elected Republican lawmaker accused the speaker of pushing her young daughter.

Rep. Mayra Flores (R-Texas), who was recently elected into Congress in a special election, claimed Pelosi nudged her daughter during a group photo.

But a spokesman for Pelosi wrote in several Twitter posts that those allegations are unfounded. Pelosi, he claimed, was instead trying to move so that her daughters wouldn’t be hidden behind her.

“It’s sad to see ‘news outlets’ that know better misrepresent the Speaker’s effort to ensure Rep. Flores’ daughters wouldn’t be hidden behind her in all of the photos of such an important moment for their family,” spokesman Drew Hammill wrote, referring to Fox News’ reports on the matter.

Be honest, the old hag pushed the kid out of the way. It won't make any difference to her constituents. They may be offended she didn't try to abort the child.

Obviously you can pick and choose which SCOTUS decisions you like.

State Attorney General Suggests Considering Applicants' Ideological Viewpoints in Denying Carry Licenses
The California AG endorses denying licenses based on the applicant's "hatred" or "racism."

Friday, the day after the New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n v. Bruen Supreme Court decision, the California Attorney General wrote a letter to California law enforcement and government lawyers, expressing "the Attorney General's view that the Court's decision renders California's 'good cause' standard to secure a permit to carry a concealed weapon in most public places unconstitutional." California thus seems ready to promptly shift to a fundamentally shall-issue regime, in which pretty much all law-abiding adults can get licenses to carry concealed weapons. Nor will this require legislative action, I think; California already has a may-issue regime in place for licensing, so—as the AG's office notes—licensing authorities ("sheriffs and chiefs of police") can just use that regime but essentially without applying a good-cause requirement.

Because brussel sprouts were meant to be cooked with bacon in your cast iron skillet. Then white pepper sprinkled on them and topped with molasses.

Proteins in plant-based meat alternatives may not be as accessible to human cells as those from real meat, a new study has suggested.

While plants rich in protein, such as soy beans, are commonly used worldwide, researchers, including those from the Ohio State University in the US, say it is unclear how much of the nutrient makes it into human cells.

In the study published on Wednesday in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, scientists assessed if human cells grown in a lab absorb the same quantities of the protein building blocks peptides from meat alternatives as they do from chicken.

Self-defense is a God given right. And there is one more country realizing that.

Zamfara in northwest Nigeria is encouraging its residents, especially farmers, to apply for licenses that will allow them to carry guns and other weapons, for self-defense against worsening insecurity in the state.

The state’s plan is to start with 500 gun licenses in each of the state’s 19 emirates, to be issued by the police. That means nearly 10,000 guns will soon be in private hands in the state but it is not clear what the criteria for issuing licenses are, including what kinds of guns are permissible.

There is drunk, then there is Drunk

We’ve all been there: you go out drinking for a night on the town, down a few drinks, only to wake up with something... missing; maybe it’s your wallet, or your keys, or your phone. Or maybe, if it’s the case of one unnamed contractor working out of Japan, it’s a flash drive holding the personal information of about half a million residents.

According to the national outlet NHK, which first reported the incident late last week, the unidentified dude was a contractor working with the city of Amagasaki, specifically tasked with dispersing subsidies to residents that were hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Details about those specific residents—and the rest of Amagasaki’s 465,177 taxpayers—were held on a single flash drive, which somehow found its way into a bag that he took with him for a Wednesday bender.

33 You should probably clarify that in NY, "supreme court" is not the kind of "supreme court" in 48 other states (looking at you, Md) and the federal courts. It's the equivalent of trial court/superior court/circuit court. It's where most big cases (over $25,000 for instance in state court and equity) start.

The advantage of cooking at relatively low temperatures is that you don't have to deal with a huge temperature gradient between the outside and the inside.

Chicken benefits greatly from lower temps!

That's how restaurants get them super crisp.

You could probably get similar results shallow frying them in a skillet.

It helps if you dry them out as much as possible, as deep frying basically boils the moisture out of the tiny leaves.

The Usual Suspects managed to vandalize a grand total of three businesses and two vehicles.

Pathetic, by Summer 2020 standards, where the violence was so extensive that just about every business downtown boarded up, along with a lot of businesses in neighborhoods near police facilities.

Nature is healing.

They're trying again tonight in a different neighborhood, and are specifically trying to take out a pregnancy resource center - my prediction is that they won't get very far.

The environmental groups demanded that.

You see, suspending the gas tax rewards the evil people who use a lot of gasoline, while "stimulus payments" rewards the genderqueer person who rides xer bike two miles to xer job at the left-wing nonprofit.

To do that, put butter and fun stuff under the skin and cook at 375. You may want to put foil over the breasts. But the trick is is to flay the bird properly so it sits flat. If you do 325, you may end up with sad skin and so so breast/dark.

I watched the video. To me, it looked like the child is used to positive physical contact with adults and so was making contact with nancy. Nancy wanted more space between them and elbowed the child out. The child stepped back in, in her innocence not understanding that this adult didnt want contact. Very telling re n.p.'s mental state.

Anyway, yeah vegetable based protein bioavailability generally sucks.

Meaning you have to consume 2-3 times as much as animal based protein, and it costs more per equivalent dose.

And if that's not enough for you, seeing as you're all 29 y/o's here. You do realize that we don't absorb protein as well as we did when we were really 29 y/o.
Normal protein synthesis takes place when you ingest 20-25 grams of animal based protein, but if you're AoSHQ age level, you might need 50+ grams of protein to get the same effect.

Short of supplementation, that's a lot of meat to eat at one sitting...

490 And my electrified string trimmer is now a success! I thought, "before I put a bigger motor on it, maybe I should just try running it on 24 volts." That's all it took. Running on 24 volts, it cuts pretty darn well. Not quite as fast as the gas motor at full throttle, but fast enough to do truly useful trimming. And the motor did not overheat. Two 12-volt batteries on the deck of the golf cart, and I cruised around the yard, and got a bunch of needed trimming done.

I looked it up. In 1959, by international agreement, the "standard foot", or international foot was defined as exactly 0.3048m (sometime around there, and starting well before all "US customary units" have been defined in terms of standard SI units).

Now, the survey foot was defined in 1858 as 1200/3937 m (this comes from defining the meter to be 39.37"). That works out to be 0.30480061m.

The survey foot is just a smidge longer.

I think something like strict border laws today would help. 2 million illegals entered this country last year. How many will end up voting for president in 2024, with no idea of our structure of govt and individual freedom?

651 Morning Horde - or afternoon here in Hong Kong. Saw the court decision about non-citizens voting in NYC elections. Seems that at least one jurist in New York has a brain. Interestingly enough, I actually know the judge personally, Justice Porzio at Richmond County Supreme Court (Supreme Court is the lowest trial court in New York State - the Highest is the New York Court of Appeals in Albany - don't ask me why the lowest court is called "Supreme" in New York - there's lots f-d up about the state so don't get me started!). Anyway - Justice Porzio (Ralph!) is a decent guy from Staten Island and a damned good runner. Attaboy Ralphie!

Also - saw Top Gun Maverick and it was very good - and in this age of bloated, woke bombs with Mary Jane characters running around destroying every good story and franchise, it seemed like a real breath of fresh air. As I said to my sister; "It wasn't the movie we thought we wanted, but it was the movie that we damn well needed."

I remember reading something about the minimum number of people you'd need to repopulate the earth. Two, one man and woman, wouldn't cut it. It would quickly degenerate into an inbred mess that wouldn't last but a few generations.

IIRC, you could do it with as little as 30 people, but you'd have control the breeding carefully for the first number of generations. It would go something like 15 men and 15 women.

They all need to be unrelated. If any two are too closely related, it messes up. You'd have to do something like, each woman gets impregnated by each of the 15 men. This would make a whole bunch of children as non-related as possible.

Then, you have to mate all those children together in a careful, similar way.

659
Once you did that for some number of generations and expanded the population enough, you could go back to normal, but not before then.

The minimum number of pairs needed to do things the normal way to start with is much higher than 15.

There used to be a scale of mental retardation that formally defined "idiot", "imbecile", and moron based on IQ.

An idiot was the lowest, IQ of 0 to 25. Imbecile was 26 to 50, and moron was 51 - 70.

So, sub-moron meant someone below the moron scale, either an imbecile or an idiot.

So, yeah, Hot Gas commenters.

>The current elites in the West, who are totally committed to progressivism, are beyond redemption and must be replaced or else the entire system must collapse.

>There is no meaningful difference between the establishment parties – Democrat and Republican, Labour and Conservative – these represent two wings of a “uniparty” who differ only in the speed at which they wish to accelerate progressivism.

Generally speaking apart from the C-19 stupidity (still masking in public except for when exercising outdoors and one week quarantine, in hotel, at your own expense, when you return from travelling abroad) it has been quiet. No more political riots since the security laws passed and they rounded up a bunch of "dissidents". My status as a "Chi-sin Gweilo" generally inoculates me from being bothered by government types. However, I do think my time here can be numbered in months and not years. Likely moving on to Singapore by November. Its a shame, Hong Kong, back in the old days, was really amazing. Ah well, your "Old China Hand" will simply have to move on.

I'd say "come and visit for a MoMe" before it all passes on but the quarantine rules make that a non-starter.

Alas.

686 NY Gubernatorial Primary today. Not sure for whom to vote. Either Zeldin or Astorino, maybe Wilson. Giuliani's son is a little too young IMHO. Wilson, a business guy, which is a kind of an endorsement right there. Astorino is a former Westchester County exec (home of Sandy from Westchester!); never heard of him while in office. But he did run against Cuomo the last time and held him to 54% of the vote (a low for Cuomo, besides resigning) with NYC, natch, putting Cuomo over the top. Zeldin seems to be decent in the US House at the moment.

So, three out of four choices and not much difference between the three. It's weird to have so many Republican choices for any NY statewide elected office.

Gotta vote for somebody who can defeat that Hochul scrunt. I'm thinking I'd rather have Zeldin stay in the House and go with either Wilson or Astorino. Politician or non-politician? Decision, decisions. This is one election where I think we may just get a Republican governor in the fall. Maybe not a MAGA Republican, but hey, it's NY -- I'll take what I can get.

May you make a wise choice, and your candidate reach the runoff (if there is one in NY).

I go to the polls today, bringing along 3 'in the bag' moar votes, for the MS R primary runoff race of incumbent GOPe Steve Palazzo vs a former police chief Mike Ezell.

Palazzo has been in the House for 12 undistinguished years, looks like he's added 5#s of pork to his body every year, is fully captured by the MS GOPe, AND I get a chance to vote against him??? Primary him gone*.

*He'll probably win, turnout for runoffs is usually abysmal, and he ain't completely horrible.

But whomever wins the primary wins the seat. The Dem doesn't have much of a chance. But at least he'll know he's on the radar.

Posted by: GnuBreed at June 28, 2022 03:42 AM (F0YaR)

690 GnuBreed, turnout for primaries and off-year elections is horribly bad in this State. That's how we ended up with that prick de Blasio as mayor with something like around 30 or so % of the vote. NYC mayoral elections are held on odd years so not even in conjunction with Federal off-year elections. An off-year election was how the country ended up with Sandy from Westchester in the House.

But thanks. I do want to make a good choice, one that has a better than decent chance of winning in the upcoming supposed tsunami. Gov. Hochul is an idiot scrunt no better than Sen. Kirsten Jellybean.

Posted by: RickZ at June 28, 2022 03:50 AM (ldL4g)
