The Morning Rant: The US Forest Service Started the New Mexico Fires Which Were Blamed on Climate Change

You’ve probably heard about the recent forest fires in the western US, blamed - of course – on climate change. (By which the climatistas mean that the wildfires were caused by all you selfish SUV drivers, McMansion owners, and other enemies of Gaia.)

Climate change is why New Mexico's wildfire season started early this year [Yahoo News – 5/04/2022]

‘Like an inferno:’ US West burning at furious pace so far [Associated Press – 5/12/2022]

Wind-driven flames have torn through vegetation that is extraordinarily dry from years-long drought exacerbated by climate change.

It’s not climate change. These are man-made fires and the US Forest Service is largely responsible. This isn’t even a case of one uncontrolled fire set by the USFS…it’s multiple uncontrolled fires!

Forest Service says it started all of New Mexico's largest wildfires [Reuters – 5/27/2022]

Two blazes that grew into New Mexico's largest ever wildfire were both started by the U.S. Forest Service the agency said on Friday, prompting the state's governor to demand the federal government take full responsibility for the disaster.

Forest Service investigators determined the Calf Canyon Fire was caused by a "burn pile" of branches that the agency thought was out but reignited on April 19, the Santa Fe National Forest said in a statement.

The Calf Canyon fire wasn’t even a controlled burn that got out of control, it was simply a burn pile.

On the other hand, the Hermit’s Peak Fire was a “controlled” burn, except that the Forest Service lost control of it. Both of the wildfires started by the USFS then merged into one hellfire.

That blaze [Calf Canyon] on April 22 merged with the Hermits Peak Fire, which the USFS started with a controlled burn that went out of control on April 6, the agency previously reported.

Blazing a more than 40-mile-long (64-km-long) path up the Sangre de Cristo mountains, the fire has destroyed watersheds and forests used for centuries by Indo-Hispano farming villages and Native American communities.

Burning down centuries-old villages of Indo-Hispanos sounds kind of racist to me. Was diversity training not provided to the Forest Service?

By the way, the US Forest Service isn’t the only “good guy” going into the woods and starting deadly wildfires.

Do you remember the awful Dixie Wildfire in California in 2021? It burned almost a million acres, incinerated over 700 homes, and destroyed the town of Greenville.

A college professor who had taught at Santa Clara University and Sonoma State University set at least four fires that were part of the greater overall conflagration.

College Professor Gary Stephen Maynard Charged With Intentionally Starting California Wildfires [CBS Sacramento – 11/18/2021]

The fires happened in the area of the Dixie Fire in Shasta Trinity National Forest and Lassen National Forest while the Dixie Fire was burning. Some of the fires were behind firefighters battling the Dixie Fire, the indictment alleges.

According to this NPR story, Professor Maynard’s teaching and research includes ”environmental sociology,” whatever that is. Perhaps starting wildfires as a way of bringing attention to “climate change” is a form of environmental sociology. Outside of faculty lounges, however, murder via arson is not generally embraced as an acceptable form of sociology.

I am starting to suspect that wildfires out west are like vandalism “hate crimes” on campus, and that until proven otherwise, I should assume any such occurrence is a false-flag event ignited by left-wing activists. Or by incompetent government agencies.

31 Controlled burns are usually better than the alternative, which is significant build-up of both slash and tree density, which makes the fire much worse and much hotter when it inevitably comes. This is what happened in the Buffalo Creek fire in Colorado, which got hot enough to sterilize. It was a decade or so before so much as some ground cover regrew in the burn zone.

But a controlled burn in high wind is begging for a loss of control to occur. I don't know if the wind was high at the start of the burn or not, but windy conditions should cancel a controlled burn. Yes, this is expensive - but it is also necessary.

TBH, the burned areas will bounce back better than before. Well, except for any structures and/or fences that were burned (posts burn and wire loses its tension and rust preventing galvanized coating).

Native Americans, AKA American Indians, deliberately set wildfires, especially on the Great Plains.

The drought is bad in the Southwest. But 'climate change' has sh*t all to do with it.

++++
That is so entirely unacceptable that I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around it. "Thought it was out?" Based on what? How long did they wait before withdrawing fire support? How big was the "burn pile" and were the practices and equipment and personnel in place to deal with it?

Wildfire is awful, and I have had some nail-biters from when I lived in CO (evacuated, ready to run, kids in school losing their houses (though not mine, by the grace of G-d), etc.) and fire is a deadly monster. Controlled burns and the like help keep some of those risks down and is a vital form of active management. Controlled burns in high winds (if that's what happened) or failing to determine that your damn slash pile is actually extinguished post-burn is unconscionable.

If a camper said, "whoops, sorry, I thought my fire was out but it flared back up and there was nothing I could do," he'd likely be criminally charged and would be exposed to damn near limitless liability.

out here in CO it doesn't take much, because of winds and low humidity setting the stage. Fires have started out here from vehicles parking on dry grass (hot exhaust pipes), cigarettes tossed out car windows, wind knocks down a power line and sparks a grass fire, and mainly lightning

arson too, of course, but that's not common

Make any bets there are protocols in place for such a thing and those protocols were ignored?

By the way, I got an up close and personal look at how quickly a fire can go out of control. Where I used to work, every afternoon, a strong breeze would come up. Also, high desert, so, very dry. Anyone with a lick of sense would know better than to burn their burn pile. Well, a guy did it, the fire spread to a field of tall dry grass, and, "whoom" that fire was off to the races. Fortunately, local fire fighting got on top of it early, but, it was scary how fast that fire moved. Also, dry pine trees go up like a roman candles in a forest fire. Amazing and scary sight.

Funny, how when normal people own something, they take care of it so it does not have the CONDITIONS for large fires... but BLM? (Bumbling Land Mismanagement?) sure seems to have a LOT of large fires.

The funny thing is, you really don't have to de-thatch zoysia as much as you do other lawn grasses. It likes a thin layer of thatch just to act as a mulch, and it doesn't really get thicker than a half inch or so as long as you're maintaining your lawn properly.

(I moved in to a house with a zoysia lawn... i've been doing a lot of research on it. It really isn't like cold-season grasses at all. )

107 Recall this --

The 2015 Gold King Mine waste water spill was an environmental disaster that began at the Gold King Mine near Silverton, Colorado,[2] when Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) personnel, along with workers for Environmental Restoration LLC (a Missouri company under EPA contract to mitigate pollutants from the closed mine), caused the release of toxic waste water into the Animas River watershed. They caused the accident by breaching a tailings dam while attempting to drain ponded water near the entrance of the mine on August 5.[3] After the spill, the Silverton Board of Trustees and the San Juan County Commission approved a joint resolution seeking Superfund money.

Three million gallons of highly toxic waste water was dumped into the Animus river, from which many communities downstream drew their drinking water. It was a spill caused by the EPA. And of course they fought any lawsuits against their actions. Claimed damages were $1.2 BILLION. I dunno what the final outcome was, except this...

116 a good portion of USFS worker annual income comes from their extra pay for fighting wildfires. This contributes to the USFS not aggressively using water tanker aircraft - the employees don't want to lose their $$ from fighting fires by hand and so on.

Thanks to various enviro-nazi groups even an agency or private landowner that wants to do sensible land management to clear underbrush (with goats, cattle, or bulldozers under power lines) gets bound with red tape so the conditions are ripe for any fire to become an out of control wildfire.

One of the covid articles JJ linked this morning said that the CDC gets over 40% of its funding from vaccine patents and vaccine products.

But yeah, the CDC certainly had no reason to push inadequately-tested covid vaccines, and unlimited boosters, on the public, right?

Remember last year, when the CDC was assuring Americans that the rumors that covid vaccines could change human DNA was all a bunch of ridiculous anti-vaxx conspiracy nonsense? "The vaccine can't penetrate the cell nucleus, so of course it can't alter your DNA, you deplorable fools!" said the CDC authoritatively.

Then some Swiss scientists did experiments with the vaccines and human liver cells, and oopsie, not only can the vaccines penetrate the cell nucleus and change cell DNA, but they do it within mere hours of the vaccines being injected in the body.

But yeah, trust the government.

Let's see if we can follow the logic. *Puts on his geriatric retard hat*. What are your lungs for? You breathe oxygen into your lungs. Lungs hold oxygen. Guns shoot bullets. Bullets put holes in things. Shooting someone in the chest will cause the bullets to travel through him. The bullets will travel through the lungs. The lungs hold the oxygen. Bullets will put holes in the lungs. Oxygen will blow out the holes in the lungs made by the bullets.

Ergo a 9mm will blow out a lung.

You don't need controlled burns to tend to a forest. Just brains and elbow grease.

Our Forest Service employees need to be sent to Germany for training on the proper care and feeding of forests. Germany does a great job with theirs.

332 The US Forest Service Started the New Mexico Fires Which Were Blamed on Climate Change

Nothing new. Remember the national fires in Australia a few (?) years ago. They blamed that on "climate change", but it was actually caused by radical "climate change" activist policies.

The environazis have been doing this shit for decades as radical activists. And now they are in control of every institution in the world.

Same bullshit with the Left for every issue. No racism exists anymore so they perpetuate fake race crimes and cry "racism!". No sexism exists anymore, so the feminazis lie about issues (i.e. "unequal pay") and cry "sexism!". No anthropogenic global warming exists so they cause crises and blame it on "climate change". Enforcing laws stops the illegal alien problem so they stop enforcing laws and then cry "we need comprehensive immigration reform!"

Same playbook they've used for decades on every issue.

It's one of those movies that covers years in two hours, and nothing is covered all that well. The centerpiece is Depp's performance, and it ends up so mannered that he ceases to be a character and becomes a caricature. I didn't buy it. The director, Scott Cooper, is something of a hack, I think. His style is arthouse friendly, which gives him automatic cred with certain critics, but his movies consistently disappoint.

415 In 1933, the Ellery Queen cousins set one of their novels about Ellery the detective in the middle of a forest fire. Ellery and his father the Inspector are on vacation in the mountains in upstate NY when they are caught by a fire and have to take refuge at the home of a doctor/scientist atop the mountain. He's murdered, and the twists and turns of plot take place amid the steadily encroaching fire as it works its way up toward them. An adroit switch on the old "people isolated by a snowstorm" trope -- with extra suspense built in.

This is The Siamese Twin Mystery, and yes, there are Siamese twins in it!

418 398 I think its a heresy here but I really did not like the first Top Gun very much. It was kind of cheesy and at points awkward, and was really a worn out kind of plot. I don't really want to see the new one, and honestly "its not super woke" isn't a huge selling point to me. That should be the default not the selling point.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 31, 2022 12:03 PM (KZzsI)

========

Top Gun is two movies in one. The first is awesome. The second is awful. I've yet to find a real fan of Top Gun who really disagrees with me that the romantic half is garbage. They just ignore it.

That being said, all I've heard of Maverick is that it's really good, and I like the director a lot. I tried to get Dolley to go this weekend, but she refused outright because she just didn't want to go to a movie. We went to a BBQ restaurant instead.

The sequence of events isn't quite that. They added the flags back (Japan also) after Tencent pulled funding on CCP orders to not glorify the US Navy. A nice middle finger.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 31, 2022 12:15 PM (ZGrMX)

443 Sharkman, there actually used to be fuels crews that did exactly what you suggested. But over the years, funding has reversed its flow from the field to the office. Even our very own Tom McClintock got in his dig at the boots on the ground, and he should know better! Today, you get your beat up fire crews that have worked 1200 hours of overtime in 6 months and try to squeeze in some projects between fire seasons. Not a recipe for good management.

446 The Ruidoso NM fire a decade or more back was also caused by the USFS "controlled" burning, and almost burned the entire town. People died. Try to find it in a search, though. Oh right, that was before the default cause was determined to always be climate change.

Posted by: Born Free at May 31, 2022 01:10 PM (N3ztU)

447 I was in Santa Fe a few weeks ago. The locals told us that the local weather people urged them not to burn, as they were predicting high winds for that week.

I was also told the locals were overruled by the feds, who did not agree with the local weather people and started the fires anyway.
