The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"And I think John Durham knows what that 'insurance plan' is. I know we figured it out during Russiagate, and we have tried to educate the American public on it, but it remains classified, partly,"Kash Patel, a former top House Intelligence Committee aide

Quote II

The issue is not the type of firearm, it’s not the magazine capacity, it’s not even the fact that it’s a firearm, and it’s surely not what flavor of politics the killer claims or espouses. The issue is mental health and criminal behavior. As long as we are letting the crazies and the crooks run the streets, we’re going to have dead people.William Lehman

Quote III

"I am tired of hearing about being the best state in the country to do business when we are the worst state in the country to live.” Stacey Abrams

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out of the state.

Quote IV

"I gave them the valet ticket and they said, no you took it at 3am," Vehicle's driver Johnny Nahlous

What goes up doesn't always have to go back down. Fuck Joe Biden!

Citing estimates from JPMorgan, over the weekend Bloomberg wrote that courtesy of a Biden administration terrified of what soaring inflation will mean for the Democrats in the midterms, and a Fed that is determine to do anything - even crash the market and spark a recession - to do Joe Biden's "kill inflation" bidding, the US faces a new scary threat: a plunge in wealth which JPM estimates at least $5 trillion, and could reach $9 trillion by year-end.

In short, the world’s richest nation is waking up to an unpleasant and unfamiliar sensation: It’s getting poorer... and worst of all, it's getting poorer at the behest of its own leaders.

Since the start of the year, the S&P 500 Index is down 18%, the Nasdaq 100 has lost 27% and a Bloomberg index of cryptocurrencies has plunged 48%. That all amounts to “a wealth shock that is set to drag on growth in the coming year,” JPMorgan economists led by Michael Feroli wrote in a note Friday

I'm a sportsman. I hunt and I fish. That's why we call it hunting and fishing, not shooting and catching. If this guide is guilty as charged, throw the book at him.

Utah hunting guide faces felony charge for Donald Trump Jr.’s big-game hunt
Court documents say guide Wade Lemon used ‘a pile of grain, oil and pastries’ to lure a bear that Trump Jr. then killed.

Utah hunting guide Wade Lemon faces five years in state prison for the death of a Carbon County bear killed during a guided hunt on May 18, 2018.

But Lemon, a well-known guide, didn’t pull the trigger — Donald Trump Jr. did, according to the Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Trump Jr. is not named in a recent filing against Lemon, but the DNR confirmed his identity as the person named in the felony complaint as Lemon’s “client” on the hunt. Prosecutors have indicated there was no evidence showing Trump Jr. would have known about the alleged baiting that went on during the hunt.Emphasis Added

It used to be that only politicians stole from you in the light of day. Not anymore.

Employees punched, kicked and weaponized a chair to fight off thieves armed with hammers during an attempted smash-and-grab heist on Sunday at a jewelry store in the Bella Terra shopping center in Huntington Beach.

The thieves bolted into Princess Bride Diamonds at 7821 Edinger Ave around noon, police said. Four people dressed in dark clothing immediately used a hammer to smash a display case, as seen in surveillance footage the store shared in an Instagram story.

The intruders had pulled into the outdoor mall’s parking lot in a Honda, said an employee at a nearby store who declined to give his name for safety reasons. He said he saw three or four people wearing ski masks and carrying hammers get out of the car. One of them was carrying a backpack with a camouflage print.

“As soon as I saw them get out of the car, I knew they were going to rob Princess Bride,” he said.

A good time could have been had by all. But no. Genius Award Winners. Plenty of them tonight.

This year’s annual "go topless" Jeep weekend in Texas resulted in more than 100 arrests and dozens of people, including a sheriff’s deputy, sent to the hospital during the event attended by tens of thousands.

More than 80,000 revelers attended the weekend-long event for Jeep enthusiasts at Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula, a popular beach destination in Galveston County, Texas.

Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset told FOX 26 Houston that more than 100 people were arrested over the weekend, as deputies responded to multiple assaults, fights and DWIs.

124 This year’s annual "go topless" Jeep weekend in Texas resulted in more than 100 arrests and dozens of people, including a sheriff’s deputy, sent to the hospital during the event attended by tens of thousands.

If you 'missed' this event, you are in luck. There is a "Jeeping The Coast" event scheduled for MS 6/1 to 6/5. Last year, it was cancelled due to covid, but thousands still showed up the the non-event, many sporting t-shirts saying in essence "Fuck the cancellation".

Oh yes, there were many Jeeps. Some topless.

133 Interesting article in the Daily Mail.

The head of RT, Margarita Simonyan, said on a Russian news program, along with her usual threats of nuclear war:

When people ask how long this will go on, in terms of our alienation, confrontation with the west, I see only one version of events: People, this is forever. Get used to this new life.'

She said the 'brave new world' will no longer be open to people who want to study in the west, telling viewers to get used to Russia's growing isolation and saying people would be thankful their children did not study in western institutions in the future.

In other words, Russia is going to turn back into the Soviet Union - no iPhones, no foreign vacations, no foreign media.

It will be interesting how Russians react to this - Greg Yudin, a very perceptive professor in Moscow, noted that the relatively low level of protest in Russia was based on the assumption that this would all blow over in a few months (like it did after Crimea in 2014). Realizing that these changes are intended to be permanent may change public opinion.

My pastor in grad school said he never made the mistake of taking the spellings of girls' names for granted (I think he said girls in particular - not sure).

243 It is a mash up of two or more names. It's supposed to be cool or something. Problem is, most normal people see a name like that and assumptions are made, right or wrong. Unfortunately, the assumptions made are usually right. So saddling a child with a "unique" name is actually a strike out from the get go.

Russian airlines no longer fly outside the former Soviet Union (they're afraid of having their planes seized), and there are just a handful of foreign flights into Russia.

US Embassy Moscow keeps a daily tally of flights out of Moscow and St. Petersburg - there are a grand total of 15 flights out of Russia today, 9 to Turkey (5 of those flights are full). Only one flight to Antalya, which was the biggest tourist destination for Russians. No flights to Thailand, which used to be a big Russian tourist destination.

That may change, but at the moment mass tourism from Russia is dead.

I don't have a problem with this in theory, because AAs are in the unfortunate position of being probably the only Americans whose heritage was erased. So I understand the desire to try to connect with it.

My issue is with not bothering to even do a rudimentary amount of work to even try to be accurate or learn about it. You have people running around claiming they originated from Egypt, or ignoramuses like Oprah excitedly saying on one of her shows that she hoped she was Zulu. As a West African, I lost all respect for her when I watched that episode. It's like people want to claim everywhere except where they actually came from - West and Central Africa.

At least, even though Alex Haley lied, he chose an appropriate country.

He unloaded the horse, and then pulled an ol timey plow rig from his truck bed and after rigging up the horse, he plowed the vacant lot to fresh dark brown earth which by then was being watched by every kid on my street.
When he was done, he looked across the street at all of the assembled kids and stated, "My horse likes carrots and apples for a treat." We all ran home and gathered up quite a feast for that horse. I saw him again the next year and then never again as they built a house on that site soon after.

If you talk to police, it's incredibly common for perps to run their mouths about what they've done, even though it destroys them. They can't stop themselves; my guess is that people who have self control rarely end up in this type of situation. It's why Defense Lawyers will almost all say that their top 3 pieces of advice to their clients is "shut up, shut UP, SHUT UP!!!"

399 When I was a kid, I went to school with some kids who had an abandoned house on their acreage. They primarily used it as an auxiliary hay barn.

They'd leave grain lying around on the floor all year long (no door on the place).

Then, when deer season arrived, they'd sit at the top of the stairs with their rifles.

Sporting? No. But they had a lot of kids to feed.

Robert A. Heinlein told the story of how his 90-something grandfather died -- bulldogging a deer that was stuck in a hole in the ice on his frozen pond. He'd left the cabin without his gun, but could not afford to let that meat escape.

He slipped and fell, and a point of the deer's antler went into his heart.

I don't know, poached eggs can be pretty good.

474 463 I dumped a couple of pounds of mildewy feed oats into my compost last week and today I noticed they were sprouting. I wish I had given them to the lady across the street for her chickens instead, they like green stuff but she doesn't want them eating her lawn and garden, and doesn't want the hawks to eat them.

Turn it over, and it will rot nicely. Not to worry. If you need worms, get some.

481 FWIW, a "bodice" in pattern making refers to the top part of a woman's dress, specifically the pieces which go from the shoulders to the waistline, sans the sleeves.

I thought "bodice" was pronounced "bo - deese" until Miley corrected me. It's just "bod-is", and Merriam-Webster confirms.

I've probably made a fool of myself pronouncing it before.

486 Had to laugh at raindumbo's coat hanger remark...

Sure, buddy. Instead of hangers, maybe the demonrats could supply a few tabs of "Plan B" with their crackpipe kits. You know, if they *really* gave a damn. LOL

487 Morning, folken! Are we all still here?

I got up to work out, and that is the *last* thing I feel like doing. Which is true nearly every morning. I'm bored with the same routine and same route. Maybe it's time to drive to the 24-hour gym place about a mile away and see about a membership. I can drive over there early, work out, get cleaned up, snatch a quick breakfast, and head off to work, but run only a little later than I do now.

490 Petfinder shows a cute black fluffy girl kitten for adoption, 4 months old, about 3 hours' drive away. The rescue place, however, still natters on about being closed for the Coof, wants you to call them with a vet reference (!?), and has not replied to my question as to whether they have Saturday appointments. This don't look good.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at May 24, 2022 04:13 AM (c6xtn)

491 Hullo, JQ! What nefarious doings bring you up and about at this dark hour?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at May 24, 2022 04:14 AM (c6xtn)

492 Jack Cassidy was the best Columbo murderer. Prove me wrong.

Patrick McGoohan was great and did the most stints, 4 total, 2 in the '70s and 2 in the '90s, but Jack Cassidy, who did 3 in the '70s had a certain je ne sais quoi you want in a murderer.

Related: William Shatner is playing a murderer (I think, it's early) on a '73 Barnaby Jones.

493 Nefarious doings? Well, no... just staying up too late, as usual.

Sucks that adopting a pet can be such a PITA. Does this place not ever answer their phone? Meh, my 2 cents says keep looking.

They answered my first email, which is how I found out the kitten is 4 months old. But they've been silent on my second Q. If they aren't available on a Saturday (or Sunday, which is unlikely), I'd find it hard to get there. Any longer drive would make for a complete day, 4 or more hours there and the same back, and time at the actual shelter.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at May 24, 2022 04:27 AM (c6xtn)

495 Aw, sorry Wolfus. That situation sucks.

Trust your gut. If they can't reply to an email within reasonable time, how can you be sure they're caring properly for the animals?

Posted by: JQ at May 24, 2022 04:37 AM (dpnJh)

496 Ugh, I'd better sign off.

Suddenly very sleepy. Go figure. Wish I could've nodded off 2 hours ago!

Good night.

Stopping in and rushing out thr door. Been a few rough days for mom, subsequently for my son and I. She's been having absence seizures. Just another step closer to the end I guess. Prayers for her would be appreciated!

Make it a good day, all
