Axios: "CNN+ Looks Doomed"

And Taylor Lorenz looks like a melted waxwork figure of Dom DeLuise. Tell me something I don't know.

They're cancelling all external marketing for the streaming "service" (it's not a service, it's an imposition), which means they're not spending money to promote it. They'll only be promoting it where it's free to promote it, like on CNN's twitter feed.'

Or on CNN+ itself. Which no one watches.

They might run an ad on CNN, but I imagine they won't run many of those.

Warner Bros. Discovery has suspended all external marketing spend for CNN+ and has laid off CNN's longtime chief financial officer as it weighs what to do with the subscription streaming service moving forward, five sources tell Axios.

Why it matters: Inside CNN, executives think the launch has been successful. Discovery executives disagree.

CNN+ has roughly 150,000 subscribers so far.
Warner Bros. Discovery wants to eventually build one giant service around HBO Max.

...

Executives are frustrated that new leadership is moving quickly to dismantle what they see as an eventual lifeline for the cable network.

CNN's original plan was for CNN+ to become profitable in four years by investing $1 billion into the service.

LOL.

...

CNN+ launched on Roku last week, which should've prompted a subscription boost.

Why would that prompt a subscription boost? Just because garbage is available, doesn't mean people will buy garbage.

I have Roku. (Great service, lets you cut the cable cord almost painlessly!)

I haven't seen any ads for CNN Minus. (Roku advertises shows and services on the side of the boot-up screen.)

I just searched for new channels and did find it, but who is going to bother searching for this? It's like trying to find Taylor Lorenz's phone number to date her. No one wants to fuck an orc. They nasty.

Also, CNN Minus isn't branded as CNN Minus. It's branded as CNN.

So apparently people also don't want CNN itself! Because Roku is offering them CNN, not CNN Minus, and apparently that's not budging the subscription numbers, either!

But with marketing around the service suspended, there are concerns that growth will be short-lived. A point of pride amongst CNN staffers is how smoothly the app's rollout has been technologically.

You know what really helps apps roll-out smoothly? When almost no one is pinging the server to actually use it.

Discovery executives are focused mostly on returning CNN to its journalistic core, a point Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav reiterated in a town hall last week. That includes less of a focus on primetime perspective programming, and more of a focus on hard, breaking news. CNN+ features an array of soft news content, which doesn't align with Discovery's broader vision for CNN.

...

CNN+ executives were originally hoping to attract 2 million subscribers in the first year and 15-18 million over four years, as Axios has previously reported.

We should definitely believe CNN. They seem to have a really good bead on reality.

Around $300 million has been spent and hundreds of jobs have been created to support the service.

I insist, it's not a "service," it's an imposition.

Chris Wallace will soon have more time to spend with his hair dye.

I predict that they won't run an ad. That would eat up time to advertise their actual CNN shows or to actually sell that ad space. What they'll do is they'll have Chris Wallace or whoever else they have on it, appear on CNN for a segment. And right before for the commercial, "Thank you Chris. A piece on here by ACE a few days ago showed how there's a small movement to call being relaxed and taking a day off "goblin mode". I don't know where that came from, since goblins are not known for being lazy, unkempt, and slothful, but whatever. My guess is it somehow comes from that.

The entire "business model" of CNN+ depends on millions of people agreeing to pay for content that when it was free they were avoiding like an Ana Navarro-Taylor Lorenz mudwrestling match. 104 I still don't understand how the "math" even works at a network like CNN. Someone like Anderson Cooper gets tens of millions of dollars and has the same ratings as a small YouTube channel. And that's like their flagship show. How does this model make money?

the theory behind stakeholder is that there is a trained technocratic elite who can rationalize society to run more efficiently for everyone, and justify it by developing a system where everyone has to play to profit.
What is done instead is a system where everyone has to do what they are told without consideration of profit or benefit just to keep what they have, and the technocratic elite set up as an oligarchy to suppress competition, create their families as inherited royalty and run multi-million dollar rape tents

121 Axios: "CNN+ Looks Doomed"
++++
Late to the party, Axios.

I called this *weeks* ago when, shortly after launch, they started that "50% off for LIFE" promotion. That was a big, flashing red light with a warning klaxon that things were *not* working out. You don't do that kind of offer unless one of two things is true:
1. Adoption is slow but you think you're about to hit your growth spurt and you want your early adopters to evangelize the service.
2. Your service is doomed and so the "lifetime" pricing isn't going to matter because the lifetime is going to be brief.

It clearly wasn't door #1, because if it had been then they would have *opened* with that offer, not tacked it on a couple of weeks after initial launch. That leaves door number two.

Notice how this is much more interesting than talking about CNN+. From the LOTR fandom wiki on Goblins:

A clear illustration that Tolkien considered goblins and orcs to be the same thing, the former word merely being the English translation of the latter, is that in The Hobbit (the only one of Tolkien's works in which he usually refers to orcs as goblins) Gandalf asks Thorin if he remembers Azog the goblin who killed his grandfather Thror, while in all his other writings Tolkien describes Azog as a "great Orc"

Common usage is that orcs are big green monstrous humanoids and goblins are little green monstrous humanoids (gnome or dwarf sized). LOTR roughly treats them that way iirc.

I think Tolkein meant orcs and goblins to be the same.

But he used the"goblin" in the Hobbit, mostly, and "orc" in the Lord of the Rings.

Since the Hobbit is aimed at a younger audience the goblins don't seem as vicious as the later orcs in LOTR to the extent that they could be different races.

What most people don't realize is that Tolkien's underlying idea of the books was that we are reading in English that which has been translated from a language called Westron.

That language was also referencing words and things from other languages, some of which were translated into Westron and many that were not.

It's entirely possible for different regions to have different names for the same creature. I mean it's not like Europe hasn't done that for centuries.

That said, as others have pointed out, there are in-canon reasons for the difference.

Right. I am a Roku guy. Affordable devices, simple interface, lots of application coverage, you can block out its telemetry with some convenient firewall or DNS rules.

I am in the camp that CNN was trying to handle, in that if there isn't a Roku app for it, I don't subscribe. I am not running multiple platforms or trying to "cast" my phone or whatever. Not interested, unless it's something absurdly compelling. So if I were in CNN+'s market, the Roku availability would have been a big deal.

335 This is completely off an amusing and heart-warming topic, but I realized something last night as I was drifting off: nearly all fantasy has a very "conservative" or traditional good vs evil moral and world outlook. Its almost always good people who are traditionally and Biblically understood as righteous, against evil people who are traditionally understood as evil.

There are some more recent aberrations like the woeful "His Dark Materials" crap and some more woke silly fantasy that hasn't caught on at all, but fantasy is one of the few, rare pockets of old fashioned understandings of good and evil.

Westerns used to be, but they've gone full deconstruction and now there's no real daylight between the hero and their opponents (see Unforgiven, for example).

I am sick of Marvel putting out movies with 2000+ year old Thor having to rethink his life and moping about all sad because he has doubts and anxiety like a 14 year old girl.

He's literally been there and done that with EVERYTHING as a hero and "god" for millennia. There is nothing new he has not experienced after all this time. There's nothing that CAN happen to him to make him turn into a wreck fat loser who gave up on life and is so deeply sad and rethinking everything OVER AND OVER in film after film.

Thor is a complete character, when we see him, he's at the end of his story arc, like Conan. He's just who he is and he deals with situations.

421 317 Why would that prompt a subscription boost? Just because garbage is available, doesn't mean people will buy garbage.

Right. I am a Roku guy...I am in the camp that CNN was trying to handle, in that if there isn't a Roku app for it, I don't subscribe...So if I were in CNN+'s market, the Roku availability would have been a big deal. The problem is that I am not in the market for CNN+, and neither is anyone else.
Posted by: Joe Mannix

I have been using Roku since it was first rolled out and I agree completely. If a service doesn't have a Roku app I don't even bother with it; it is not my job to make it easy for me to access content. Of course, in the case of news and information content, it has to at least be tethered to reality somewhat. That is something CNN stopped doing in any form 20 years ago. As an example of how pathetic CNN is to me anymore I find RT to be more honest than CNN.

Speaking of bazoongas, I've been getting a kick out of watching a few old episodes of Match Game '75 on the Game Show Network the last few days. One of the contestants was a young woman who looked to be in her mid/late 20s. She was normal body sized, but she had enormous sweater puppies. Almost caricatures. She wore super tight tops and even talked about them when introducing herself. I thought I saw literal drool coming out of Richard Dawson's mouth. Gene Rayburn, hell all of them, were saying not-so-veiled comments about her boobs. If this were today, the studio would burn down with the Phony Rage Warriors on a rampage. The entire concept of a news channel is more or less dead, gone the way of the radio drama show. They still subscribe to newspapers.

Everyone else gets their news from youtube clips, online, twitter, blogs like this, reaction shows like V and Tim Pool, etc. You get the news as it happens, from where it happens, directly in your feed. 470 Thor is going off to think about his life for the umpteenth time because the script is being written by a room full of feminists with the creative depth of a damp countertop and rethinking their life over and over is the sum total of their existence.

I think that's it, basically. And I think Chris Hemsworth really prefers it that way. It gives him easy stuff to emote and he doesn't like playing the stoic, strong-jawed hero at all. After 2 Thor movies he was about to just break his contract and quit then they put out goofy Thor movie and he loved it.

I mean it was a fun movie, but it wasn't Thor.

It's not the divorce case. They've been divorced for a while now. The current case is a defamation case. 548 Um, how can they just decide to move judicial decisions to themselves?

This is just one more example of the Biden Administration's "do it with executive orders because the courts are slow to respond and maybe we can get away with it" strategy.

True. I'll admit that in some cases (1980s "X-Men"?) they are often much better written than the lurid covers indicate, sort of like some pulp-ish 1950s paperback originals on the drugstore racks. But if you'd asked about having a rack of comic books at the public library when I was a teenager, the look of horror on the librarians' faces would have suggested you had a horn growing out of your forehead.

566 Speaking of fun movies, which aren't...

Saw "Everything Everywhere All At Once" yesterday.

Whatever you think this movie is going to be from the trailer, it isn't. Fun multiverse romp? Nope.

Literally, the whole movie, everything everywhere (!) in this flick is about getting the Mother to say to her fat, gay daughter - "I love you and accept you fat, gay daughter, mostly because you're gay.

The daughter is the villain attempting to kill her Mom throughout the multiverse cuz she's not accepted every time every where(!). But, really the whole movie takes place in the Gay-O-Verse. Example? Antagonistic warriors power-up by sticking deildo-like objects up their butts, which waggle around as they fight.

Anywho... Yes, there are some funny sequences and moments. But, mostly this movie is for you if you can't get enough gay and fat angry lesbians in your life and viewing experience in a movie that operates at the lamest of the lame Chinese lame, silly comedy level.

Well Bombadil did do something (rescued the Hobbits when they were paralyzed by the Barrow Wights and going to die) so they could arm themselves with powerful ancient magic weapons, but... that entire sequence could have been written much better.

I think JRR Tolkien had a type of character from other myths he wanted to blend into his myth but couldn't figure out exactly how to work it in. So it feels jarring and out of place and to me at least unlikable.

579 I can't see the link, but are they moving it to administrative courts?

Posted by: sniffybigtoe

From the existing administrative courts. That just might be illegal under existing laws but the difficulty is standing to challenge the rule. Probably have to be states.

Ultimately, the AG was the final arbiter of asylum claims from what I remember but with ICE now in Homeland Security, that would now be the Sec. of Homeland Security I guess. But, I don't think that the Secretary would be able to delegate authority on asylum cases to regular bureaucrats. Asylum claims are fact based applications of immigration law and regular bureaucrats would be unable to do that job. A similar example would be an administrative rule that granted the Social Security Administrator plenary power to decide who got Social Security or Disability. Congress itself provides the delegated authority and the guidance on how that authority is to be used--not legislative rules by an agency designed to circumvent the congressional limits on administrative discretion.

580 Lifting Tom Bombadil wasn't the worst change made by Jackson. Changing Theodan, Denethor and Faramir in order to beef up Aragorn was much worse.

(Briefly, Aragorn learns lessons from Theodan, not the other way around. Denethor was treated poorly by the movie -- his is a tragic story of what happens when a good man falls into dispair, not one of him simply being crazy. Faramir utterly refuses any temptation from the ring -- he doesnt divert Frodo to Osgiliath like in the movie. There is a contrast there between his Numenorean side (which was more prevalent in him than Boromir) and that of "lesser men" who would be tempted. Jackson annihilated that distinction.)

Quite. Tolkien was anti-technology. One of Saruman's great evils was poluting and defiling Orthanc and the surrounding area and then doing the same to The Shire. Tom is unspoiled nature. He's the personification of Middle Earth.

Yeah its pretty awful what he did to many key characters especially in the 2nd and 3rd films. I didn't mind skipping Bombadil, but leaving out what I consder the highlight of the series with the scouring and turning Denethor into a monster and Faramir into just one more guy who gets corrupted by the ring was unforgivable.

Even in the LOTR books, most of what Aragorn did was condensed aside from his Strider alter ego. Epic literature has that problem--you can't focus much on individual character development.
