Former Obama Economic Advisor Larry Summers: We're Heading for 1970s Stagflation and a Major Recession

Via John Sexton at Hot Air, something else his coblogger AllahPundit will soon be blaming on Donald Trump.

Last week, Summers wrote in the Jeff Bezos Corporate Newsletter that the Fed's 0.25% hike in the fed funds interest rate was wholly inadequate given the crisis they (and Biden) had created:

Anything is possible, and wishful thinking can sometimes prove self-fulfilling. But I believe the Fed has not internalized the magnitude of its errors over the past year, is operating with an inappropriate and dangerous framework, and needs to take far stronger action to support price stability than appears likely. The Fed's current policy trajectory is likely to lead to stagflation, with average unemployment and inflation both averaging over 5 percent over the next few years -- and ultimately to a major recession.

He elaborated in an interview published in the New York Times:

I'm probably as apprehensive about the prospects for a soft landing of the U.S. economy as I have been any time in the last year. Probably actually a bit more apprehensive. In a way, the situation continues to resemble the 1970s, Ezra. In the late '60s and in the early '70s, we made mistakes of excessive demand expansion that created an inflationary environment...

And so now I think we've got a real problem of high underlying inflation that I don't think will come down to anything like acceptable levels of its own accord. And so very difficult dilemmas as to whether to accept economic restraint or to live with high and quite possibly accelerating inflation. So I don't envy the tasks that the Fed has before it.

More of his thoughts at the link.

Right, Larry. Just the past year. The idiotic, insane response to the 2008 crisis - itself entirely the result of policies and choices, not something out of the blue sky - and the continuation of much of that idiocy for a decade, followed by the utter insanity of the last 2 years, are not the problem.

39 The most secure metals to buy, would be Gold, Silver and Ammo.

Ammo, of the three, might just have the most practical value, in many ways. At velocity, or as a "currency" for when the paper money moves by the wheelbarrow-full.

Should you have the room for stowage, it might also be wide to buy distilled liquors, and those by the multiple cases. Buying by the Pint will result in a higher unit cost, but they'll be closer to "negotiable" volumes than the larger bottles.

Yeah, that rate hike went Directly to consumer Credit Card interest rates, thus exacerbating the biden miserable debt-heavy economy.

That stupid rate hike was done to curb spending, specifically to stop People from spending Money They Don't Have, i.e., credit card debt-spending. All it accomplished was keeping people in debt longer and depleting even more personal wealth.

81 Summers is an old head who seems to care about inflation if only because he thinks it will have an effect upon Democrats' political viability. Ezra is a juiceboxer, who seems to think that inflation is only a problem if the institutions the left controls like the Press, the Universities, and the Entertainment Media can't coerce the public not to notice inflation - or to make it uncool and low class to care about inflation as a political issue which will determine for whom one votes. The way the new left has historically dealt with its political problems as to "bread and butter" issues is to lean hard into its cultural insurgency to distract/make caring about American cost of living/living standards de classe.

They have gone completely YOLO and turned out proposals on climate change and a host of other issues that are well outside their mandate. Those proposals will not only cost the sector billions, but it will bleed over into private companies and market activities over which they have no statutory authority. It's going to cause a substantial impact to corporate profitability, ultimately hurt the individual investor, probably result in litigation and subvert the entire sector.

Many smart people have been calling this ... for a decade or so. Jim Rogers thinks this war ends, then that jacks up stocks for a final blow off rally ... THEN ... collapse of stocks and other things.

Thing is, we are in uncharted waters, there has never been money creation like this. All central banks are pumping, but the other "world banks" are inflating as well, leveraged everything, always with BigGov bailout underwriting.

It should have collapsed, but no one wants to quit the game of infinite free money, distributed to friends and family.

And verily verily, inflation is due to all that big money looking to trade into real assets. And too much of that BigMoney is China and the oligarchs. tick tock.

They can't raise interest rates. Not even a little bit. If they did, the national government will be unable to do anything but pay interest on the existing debt. Also keep in mind, the entirety of the existing government debt rolls over about every 4 years.

They were fooked 10 years ago on this or more, and I seriously doubt the government balance sheet has improved in that time. Everyone talking about pulling a Volcker move.

That. Will. Not. Happen. Ever. Again. At this point they have a choice, they can save the dollar, or they can save the markets. They can't save both.

The M4 Sherman has been unfairly maligned over the years. While hardly perfect, it wasn't the horrible creature that one particular book on the subject made them out to be, and was actually a very solid medium tank (certainly better than the Pzkpfw IV that was one of its two primary German counterparts).

Victor Loza, who was a Soviet tanker, used them during the war. He was impressed by them, and said as much in his book about his experiences during the war.

In 2008, Democrats and Fake News ginned up a minor recession into a "Global Financial Meltdown," scaring the shit out of people. Layoffs began immediately, out of fear of what's to come, not because of the present economy, thus creating a major recession, just in time for clinton or obama to "fix" it.

Maybe not. The gold:silver price ratio is pretty whacked right now, near historical levels. Could be a good time to buy silver, if you can find some with not too much of an over-spot premium.

BTW, the US Mint announced they're out of silver for the year.

I am not so sure. If you saw my comments yesterday, I expected this based on video of many russians with leg amputations in Russian hospital.

But, Since it may be fake news, I thought I would give as much attention to the refutation.

The Democrats know this. It's why they were pushing so hard to lock a bunch of new entitlements into the budget now through Build Back Better. Right now, entitlements are written into law as mandatory funded items. Meaning they will always be funded, even if everything else including the defense budget is cut to zero after the budget is consumed by funding the payments on the debt and paying the entitlements. The current crop of Congresscritters will be long gone when that crunch comes.

Maybe future Congresscritters will change the laws to make paying some or all of the entitlements discretionary, not mandatory. Maybe they'll enjoy being lynched.

400 That's just it, gold is not an "investment", by definition. It never has been. It's money, and an investment is something other than money that also provides a return. Real estate, stocks, etc.

Gold is a currency. So you don't "invest" in gold. You might decide it makes more sense to hold dollars if you live in say, Venezuela. But you aren't making an investment.

Now that we're clear on that, any of the supposed downsides to buying coins are equally applicable to buying paper gold. The major difference, is you don't have any control over it.

Rendering the whole point of owning gold moot. Again, I'm not telling anyone to buy gold. That's a personal thing. All I can say is most people could convert their entire net worth into gold bullion and it would fit into their front pockets and nobody would notice.

I submit there are better ways to hold gold than to buy Krugerrands. For one thing, you don't have to schlep an exchange traded gold fund back & forth to a coin store-- and then pay a commission when you buy and again when you sell.

Stock trades (to include gold funds) have been commission-free for years now.
