Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | It Was A Dark And Stormy ONT. Suddenly, A Shot Rang Out! The Maid Screamed! And Then The Murders BeganGood evening Horde! How's the day going? Apparently, the White House claims we're on a “war footing” now. I wonder how an invader would fare if we really were at war? Hard to tell anything in the deluge of propaganda coming out of Ukraine, from both sides, but the mighty Red Army doesn't look to be doing so well. Assuming reports of a stalled column 35 km long are true, don't they have a logistics department? And how the hell can they unwind that, it's blocking the road, how will fuel get to the front? Public Service From Washington to Biden, Here's the Net Worth of Every US President Biden comes in at $9 million. If you ever want proof that he's utterly incompetent, this is it. He's been in DC since Hector was a pup, and he's crookeder than a dog's back leg, yet he's only worth $9 million. He's not even good at being corrupt! What a chump. Thursday Night GameI do believe that he may be right. In the beginning, God created the heaven and the Earth. And then the murders began. It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. And then the murders began. Squire Trelawney, Dr Livesey, and the rest of these gentlemen having asked me to write down the whole particulars about Treasure Island, from the beginning to the end, keeping nothing back but the bearings of the island, and that only because there is still treasure not yet lifted, I take up my pen in the year of grace 17-, and go back to the time when my father kept the Admiral Benbow inn, and the brown old seaman, with the sabre cut, first took up his lodging under our roof. And then the murders began. (The Bible, 1984 and Treasure Island, respectively.) Now you try. What would be your nomination for best first line, before the murders began? Road Trip Idea Remember These Chain Restaurants? They're Still Hanging On How much fun would it be to mark all of these on a map and then plan a road trip down memory lane to visit them? You'd probably have to omit Chi-Chi's and Kenny Rogers Roasters from the itinerary, they only survive overseas. I know that the last remaining HoJo's is in New York, and I'd love to go there, sit down and order a clam boat. I'm less eager to go to New York, however. One childhood favorite that made the list is Gino's. Started by Baltimore Colts hall of famer Gino Marchetti, the restaurant was big in the Baltimore area. In the 70s it had the local KFC rights, so when you wanted the Colonel's chicken, you went to Gino's. By the 80s they all turned into Roy Rogers, another childhood favorite that has withered away to just a few locations (I ate at Roy's 2 weeks ago, the day after I had a wonderful visit with Doof. Man, either my taste buds grew up or their quality has gone wayyy down), but a few opened back up a decade or so ago. The last fast food burger I had before I moved to Texas was a Gino's Giant, at the store on Joppa Rd in Towson. Real Work
Neat Ace did a thread on this yesterday, but it's pretty neat for those of you who missed it. Lost in 1915, Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance found off coast of Antarctica Endurance did not reach land and became trapped in dense pack ice, and after they were stuck in the ice for 10 months, the 28 men on board were forced to eventually abandon ship. They escaped in lifeboats and on foot. Captain Frank Worsley marked down the coordinates where it sank and the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust said that these played a key role in their discovery of the vessel. The men of the expedition lived on the boat for over a year, trapped in pack ice, before taking to the lifeboats to travel over 800 miles to safety. Those were men! Shackleton returned to the Antarctic a few years later, but died of a heart attack at age 47. Years later, when talking about the great age of Antarctic exploration, a fellow Antarctic explorer, Sir Raymond Priestly, said "Scott for scientific method, Amundsen for speed and efficiency but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton" Fly The Friendly Skies Up in the Air: Flight Attendants Share Secrets Only They Know I'm not sure “Don't let your baby crawl around on the floor of the plane, it's dirty” is a huge secret, but OK. So, many years ago I watched "Bram Stoker's Dracula" by Francis Ford Coppola and thought "Eh."
But some time ago the RLM folks did a "re:view" where they praised it, and when it went on sale, I thought, "Why not." Well, watching it tonight, I know "why not." It's because it's terrible. And before you ask, I don't care how many ancient film techniques FFC resurrected to make this--technique does not make a good story. Technical challenges that are forced on a production does not make a good story. Good grief, RLM donked on "Boyhood" because "It took ten years to make!" Can they not look in the mirror now and then? And I proved it when I went out to check my mail this afternoon. I was proud of how well I'd been walking lately, so I didn't take my cane. Stupid move. I made it to the mailbox fine, got the mail, and made it almost back to the house when i caught my foot on something and fell. No real damage, just a couple of bruises, but lesson learned. TAKE THE CANE EVEN IF YOU DON'T THINK YOU NEED IT! Feeling kinda stupid, and may wear a mask if I go out in the next few days. "Um, you know bad hair days? Well, I'm having a bad face day!" That branch of the Lake of Como, which turns toward the south between two unbroken chains of mountains, presenting to the eye a succession of bays and gulfs, formed by their jutting and retiring ridges, suddenly contracts itself between a headland to the right and an extended sloping bank on the left, and assumes the flow and appearance of a river. And then the murders began.

1984 murder mystery? There's a thought. Totalitarian society investigates a series of murders, but they're incompetent naturally, so instead of catching the killer he dies in some accident (due to state incompetence, natch) while the police never solve any of the killings. The investigator drinks himself to death while the supervisors get promoted for loyalty. The end.

Ocracoke Island has the only non-embassy British territory in the US, a graveyard with British sailors lost when their ships were sunk by U-boats. Everything coming out of media is a giant, blatant lie. However, I saw something from a not completely reliable source that says the Russians have split the Ukrainian forces apart, basically surrounded them all, have taken very low casualties, and are just waiting for their collapse rather than assaulting them. Putin doesn't want to destroy the country or kill lots of Ukrainians and look bad. This is somewhat backed up by the Ukrainian president offering terms based on Russia getting no NATO for Ukraine, keeping the two split off regions and the Crimea, and a goodly amount of Ukrainian disarmament. Basically everything Putin said he wanted except the removal of the current government. Not what you offer if you are winning or stalemating.

One thing I know for sure, I never really felt like I fit either description for the Boomers or X. I was wondering when someone would propose that there was another category inbetween.
I liked grunge culture, because a lot of the music was basically classic rock played hard and the look was actually pretty close to what "freaks" wore in the late 70s. I also looked young so even though I was about ten years older than the usual crowd I fit right in at the time. But yeah, I knew I wasn't really "them" just like I wasn't there for peak Boomerdom, just read about it later. Posted by: azjaeger at March 10, 2022 11:07 PM (3/XaG) 420

Back in the late 80's, there was still a Dog & Suds in West Central Florida, off I-75 north of the Tampa area. They were pretty good. After they closed, their sign was still a landmark visible from the highway for many years.
Bennigan's was probably the best casual dining chain of the 90's, which isn't saying much. Chili's was a close second. Anyone remember Wag's? Previous bouts of fiscal imprudence and monetary jiggery-pokery were remedied by raising interest rates very high, almost 20 per cent. This caused great pain, wholesale destruction of jobs due to recession.
They can save the dollar, or save the markets, but they sure as shit can't save both? And they can't raise interest rates to any meaningful level. IIRC Jerry Pournelle had the permission to write a sequel to Space Viking but realized that Piper had packed so much into such a tiny story a sequel would be a hard act. So instead we got Falkenberg's Legion.
Then there were people who did try to write Fuzzy novels. Golden Dreams does not quite fail because the author does not attempt to ape what Piper wrote. Now Fuzzy Bones fails miserably because it tries to follow the Sunstone Heist but knowing that Piper's lost third novel was still lurking out there to be found nothing happens to Hugo Ingerman. And then there was John Scalzi's butchery of Little Fuzzy that turned Jack into a shyster lawyer, got rid of half the characters, and wrote a novel of 300+ pages when the original paperback was only 174 pages. Plus gave Jack a semi-intelligent pet that liked to play with explosives. Posted by: Anna Puma at March 11, 2022 12:10 AM (h3NN9) 671

Well. In Kuwait there was this puzzling thing of Iraqi tanks with their turrets blown off, or the entire tank flipped upside down, after we had sent our greetings via our Air Force. Mavericks penetrated all the way through many tanks, only detonating when hitting the desert hardpan. Thus, flipped tanks. They worked. Which really wasn't possible, since Beltway media had revealed and decided they didn't. Puzzling. Posted by: rhomboid at March 11, 2022 12:14 AM (OTzUX) 681

Posted by: Anna Puma at March 11, 2022 12:10 AM (h3NN9) I did pick up the non-sequels, Bones irked me because they tried re-picking up the "fuzzies aren't native sapients" of the first book by saying they weren't native. Like any sensible system wouldn't make hundreds or thousands of years of occupancy into a claim. Never was tempted by Scalzi, read the blurb and noped right out. There are apparently a bunch of Viking sequels and Kalvan sequels by John F Carr and a couple others. Not really tempting, the first one was pretty meh. I've stopped trying to follow the actual situation on the ground in Ukraine, I figure the bottom line is enough for me: do the Russians manage to squeeze the Ukes hard enough for the deal to be made, or not? While I'm skeptical of almost all outside observations about meeting timelines, logistics, etc, it is difficult to conclude the Russian forces have done extremely well, and seems reasonable to say that (so far) they have not impressed.
I do glance at the daily updates by a few outfits, but no longer try to keep up with milblogger/online types (all sides). Bottom line is all that matters. Russia went in to achieve specific political objectives, almost surely, and fairly obvious ones, and hard to see them stopping or withdrawing until they get them (well, most of them). the three traditional solutions is default, devaluation and renegotiation of repayment. The first is to say, "sucks you trusted us" The second is to say "we repay face value, sucks you trusted us to follow the intent of our contract" the third is to say, "we repay you at a new schedule and at the interest we choose, but we gotta get it first" Eventually we wind up with a currency the central bank can't faff around with. Oldcat it's clear the Russian line of advance is the river (though some units involved in the rather casual effort to surround Kiev have gone a bit west of it there). Well, and in the south, over the river, a bit. But if reports of Ukrainian persistent ability to harass or interdict supply lines in the east are accurate, it's trending towards a resistible-force-meets-moveable object situation.

Now they seem to have broken out and have a loose cordon surrounding the basically static Ukranian army. Outside of propaganda pap I've seen little resistance to this Anything near Kiev is just a distraction. They have made few serious moves there now that they are close enough to move in if a ceasefire calls for it. Posted by: Oldcat at March 11, 2022 12:43 AM (EJbIh) 731

>>>From our school district: It's been brought to our attention students have taken an interest in purchasing and playing with, "splat guns, or Orbeez guns". So you know, any type of gun, be it a toy or look-a-like is not permitted anywhere on school grounds or school events. If any such gun is found today, they will be confiscated and turned over to our school resource officer. Tomorrow or in the future, if any type of toy gun or look-a-like weapon is found on school grounds, students could face expulsion... Look-a-like weapons can easily be mistaken for a real weapon. If law enforcement were to see a student point or shooting a toy gun from a car, I fear they would respond as if it were a real weapon. We are not immune to gun violence in Iowa, just this week, a teenager in Des Moines lost his life, outside of a high school.

OK, "the complete breakdown of Ukraine, all you need to know" ... that is how YouTube guys title their videos, so that people will watch. Or .. "The one thing you must know, that no one has heard, to understand Ukraine/Russia". and usually the video does not deliver. My view ... Russia has underperformed, it is getting expensive for Putin in many ways, financial and domestic support, and maybe some breaking in the military ranks. ... So while he could prevail, maybe he's accept a little less in a deal. But another twist, Finland Sweden seem to see the bigger threat and are supporting Ukraine resistance, even considering NATO as necessary. The Zelansky side ..idk, seems willing to lose a lot more lives, or hopes sanctions will wear down Putin. China side ... beyond me, the smart people say Russia is now a China client state ... It must have been a Thursday night when I met her for the first time- at the dance hall. I reported to work in the morning after an hour or two's sleep looking like a somnambulist. The day passed like a dream. After dinner I fell asleep on the couch and awoke fully dressed about six the next morning. I felt thoroughly refreshed, pure at heart, and obsessed with one idea-- to have her at any cost. Walking through the park I debated what sort of flowers to send with the book I had promised her (Winesburg, Ohio). I was approaching my thirty-third year, the age of Christ crucified. A wholly new life lay before me, had I the courage to risk all. Actually there was nothing to risk: I was at the bottom rung of the ladder, a failure in every sense of the word. And then the murders began.

Quite a bit of talk in the Russian press, and parliament, about trying to avoid dependence on the west after this. Talk. Though I think the (understandable) punitive treatment likely for some outside businesses when they try to return to status quo ante, and the displacement of some by opportunistic third parties in the interim, may change the landscape there for quite a while.

Berzerker. That tail gunner was not really a TAIL gunner, but a rear-gunner in a USN carrier plane in the Pacific. Dauntless or such, AnnaPuma would know. No gun in the tail, but a swivel mounted gun in the aft cockpit, canopy slid open for combat. The story is true, and correct, as you've stated. There's an emotional, non-practical, non-strategic element to Russian dealings with the west that is material to the issue here.
Yesterday the Russian foreign minister had a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart in the form of a group setting hosted by the Turkish foreign minister. Lavrov's statement afterward, I thought, was a perfect illustration of what I'm talking about. Not gonna go look it up, but close to verbatim - "it's not just about life, it's about Russia's right to a place and respect on the world map". The 30 year process of NATO expansion, but especially the case of Ukraine, has stepped on this permanent raw Russian nerve. Practical security calculations suffice for Moscow's discomfort with a militarily robust/western integrated Ukraine, but there's even more to it. It's definitely tough to figure out anything from the Lugenpresse on all sides. And it is dragging on longer than I figured at first. But my basic gut-check assessment remains essentially unchanged:
1.) The Russian state is committed to their course... Subjugation of Ukraine. Perhaps with a rump state in the West, perhaps not. But a suzerainty, with no more Western influence or threat. And they will almost definitely achieve it. 2.) The US is desperate to precipitate a broader war, but will likely (hopefully) be unable to do so before Russia presents the fait accompli. 3.) The sanctions will be wholly ineffective, to the point of being a non-factor in the short to medium term. If Russia decides to counter by ceasing energy and materials exports, their needful things will outweigh the West's luxuries. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at March 11, 2022 01:28 AM (SKVme) 779

To sow confusion at the Battle of Midway, there were in fact two VT-8s.
During work ups, USS Hornet became the last carrier to be issued the TBD and the first carrier to be issued the TBF. The TBD equipped VT-8 under Lt Cmdr Waldron went to sea. The VT-8 under Lt. Fieberling had the TBFs and only arrived in Hawaii after the carriers departed. Six TBFs then flew on to Midway and attacked from there. So between both VT-8s there were in fact three survivors of the attack on the Japanese carriers - two pilots and one gunner. Posted by: Anna Puma at March 11, 2022 01:32 AM (h3NN9) 784

Posted by: Anna Puma at March 11, 2022 01:32 AM (h3NN9) Now you have me thinking about my ongoing War in the Pacific game and whether I could fly reinforcement TBD/TBF bombers to Midway. Perhaps with drop tanks? In the game the AI was obsessed with Midway, hanging out off Hawaii for a week after PH, and raiding and sinking ships I used to re-enforce and resupply it. I managed to get enough in to keep an actual invasion from happening. An annoying thing was losing 2 BBs and a CA in an accidental collision with a Midway raid - like the fifth or so In Feb 42. Kido Butai deserves respect, as do the crack Betty squadrons. The BBs were just on a workup cruise, Midway and back. Posted by: Oldcat at March 11, 2022 01:42 AM (EJbIh) 787
Several of the VT-8 pilots remained at Pearl to pick up the new TBFs. They flew them to Midway. They attacked the Kido Butai as part of the ramshackle series of attacks from Midway.
Gay was the only survivor of the main VT-8 attack, with the rest of the Hornet air group. Which was entirely disorganized due to the egotism of Hornet's CAG. Posted by: Fox2! at March 11, 2022 01:43 AM (qyH+l) 788

Posted by: rhomboid at March 11, 2022 01:37 AM (OTzUX) A difference in our organization from the Japanese was the carrier squadrons werent tied to the carrier. So the ship could just swap in a new squadron and sail on. In contrast, when at Coral Sea when one carrier had its pilots shot up and the other had some damage, both had to stand down for Midway. Bush claimed a right to fight them there so we don't have to fight them here. Maybe fine to some extent ... but not if it was only cover for his globalist friends that had even USA on its target list. Certainly encroaching on Russia was on his list, and lately we broke promises in order to move into Ukraine (while ignoring China expansionism). Catholics seemed pretty safe in Russia, not so much is China. But I can't see the big picture, except Deepstate/oligarchs have A Plan ... and it sure seems the plandemic was part of that plan, along with climate change malarky, and the whole Party of Davos, NWO, build back Brandon insanity. Most countries are nationalist, with heavy doses of what the left calls xenophobia, racism, intolerance, etc. when it is done in the USA. But nationalism ... mostly good. I still tend to cuss out people in pidgin or Hawaiian, which the hub and the kids, and even the grandbabies think is funny.

There was once a Velveteen Rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid. And then the murders began. Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of this head, behind Christopher Robin. And then the murders begin. Until he was four years old, James Henry Trotter had had a happy life. And then the murders began. He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. And then the murders began. It was love at first sight. That map woefully misunderestimates Northern Californians and Southern Oregon, which, specifically, as anyone who is familiar with the area knows, WOULD BE tough on foreign invaders. It is densely populated with highly armed pot growers, among many other off-the-grid types who don't like outsiders.
