Neat Ace did a thread on this yesterday, but it's pretty neat for those of you who missed it. Lost in 1915, Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance found off coast of Antarctica
Endurance did not reach land and became trapped in dense pack ice, and after they were stuck in the ice for 10 months, the 28 men on board were forced to eventually abandon ship. They escaped in lifeboats and on foot. Captain Frank Worsley marked down the coordinates where it sank and the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust said that these played a key role in their discovery of the vessel.The men of the expedition lived on the boat for over a year, trapped in pack ice, before taking to the lifeboats to travel over 800 miles to safety. Those were men! Shackleton returned to the Antarctic a few years later, but died of a heart attack at age 47. Years later, when talking about the great age of Antarctic exploration, a fellow Antarctic explorer, Sir Raymond Priestly, said "Scott for scientific method, Amundsen for speed and efficiency but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton"

Well, watching it tonight, I know "why not." It's because it's terrible. And before you ask, I don't care how many ancient film techniques FFC resurrected to make this--technique does not make a good story. Technical challenges that are forced on a production does not make a good story. Good grief, RLM donked on "Boyhood" because "It took ten years to make!" Can they not look in the mirror now and then?

Yeah, Coppola's Dracula is not very good. It's watchable; it has moments. But it's not good.
Langella's version may be the only really good one.
I like many of the Hammer ones, because I like Hammer horror. But they are B films all the way.
It's weird that Dracula is almost always so poorly done.

And I proved it when I went out to check my mail this afternoon. I was proud of how well I'd been walking lately, so I didn't take my cane. Stupid move. I made it to the mailbox fine, got the mail, and made it almost back to the house when i caught my foot on something and fell. No real damage, just a couple of bruises, but lesson learned. TAKE THE CANE EVEN IF YOU DON'T THINK YOU NEED IT!

I did, too, in undergrad, grad level elective. I concur, except in the masks and IVM. I masked early, then when 99.8 or so percent survivable data was available, then no. I believe TPTB knew it was a lab leak, expected bioweapon, and thus, the gross overreaction.

The second line is "Sam I am"
I think the third line is "would you like green eggs and ham." Then they get into that whole dialectic thing, so your line is pretty deep into the dialog.

I've always been partial to the Outer Banks, Hatteras Island to be exact, not up near Nags Head. Staying on Ocracoke Island is also a treat, though it can be boring if boring is what you're looking for; there is no night life as they roll up the sand at dusk.
Ocracoke Island has the only non-embassy British territory in the US, a graveyard with British sailors lost when their ships were sunk by U-boats. The Coast Guard Station on the island raises and the lowers the British flag in that tiny cemetery every day with full honors.

I liked grunge culture, because a lot of the music was basically classic rock played hard and the look was actually pretty close to what "freaks" wore in the late 70s. I also looked young so even though I was about ten years older than the usual crowd I fit right in at the time. But yeah, I knew I wasn't really "them" just like I wasn't there for peak Boomerdom, just read about it later.

One of my late cats I adopted had huge mats - she was a Persian. I held the pointy end at the groomers and she only bit me seriously once, in the bath. She was shaved entirely except for a 1 inch stripe along the backbone. She was so relived, her legs were all tied together by the mat.

Full disclosure - unlike most of you I'm not former military. But I do remember a plane show over Lake Washington in the early 90's (after Gulf War 1) where an A10 Warthog went by almost standing still. It was not hard to imagine it tearing shit up as it did so. Truly impressive.

We never went out much as a kid - too many kids, single mom and Frisch's Big Boy wasn't on the list. KFC was an extremely rare treat, like a time or two a year. It doesn't seem special now.

I remember a story about an author who has a stalker, sending postcards every so often, always getting closer. Finally he gets there and its one of his characters, who said that he will kill him unless he can name something good he wrote about him. KFC when I was a kid gave you squeeze packs of honey for the rolls. I liked all of their stuff as a kid, Cole slaw, mashed potatoes and gravy. I haven't been forever. I will have to try it sometime.

Space Viking is a good story all around, almost as good as Cosmic Computer, and bvoth of them are pretty poorly known
M.A. Foster did a similar book, called The Warriors of Dawn, but the background was about the bioengineered species of humans called the Ller who were at strained relations with the main branch humans, when it appears that barbaric Ller are raiding human worlds in an ancient globular spaceship in violation of treaties.
It is an odd book, one of the unsung new-wave sci-fi books like The Godwhale

KFC, hadn't eaten there in years, tried it recently. I judged it not too bad at all, and quite a lot of food for the money, compared to delivery pizza. I expect it's more work than slinging crappy pizza, too. They were trying to do a good job, unlike a lot of pizza joints.

One A-10A took an SA-7 in the wing. The explosion took out two of the three wing spars and the plane still managed to return to base safely, be repaired, and fly again.
Republic had only designed the A-10 to lose one wing spar and return.

I'm pretty solid on Piper. Plus Pappy Jack would never do a bad shooting.
I like Piper's historical grounding and his twists in most of his books, how it doesn't quite end up where you think it is going. Even Little Fuzzy starts out as cute animals, turns into a legal battle and struggle to prove sapience of the fellows. Then in the next book, the big enemy get converted to allies.

And then there was John Scalzi's butchery of Little Fuzzy that turned Jack into a shyster lawyer, got rid of half the characters, and wrote a novel of 300+ pages when the original paperback was only 174 pages. Plus gave Jack a semi-intelligent pet that liked to play with explosives.

Plasma jet from the tungsten penetrator melting the armor on it's way through, and then sucking the molten armor into the hull behind it, as it passes through to the other side. Crew is horribly burnt into charred meat, but it's not exactly Sous Vide. More like 3,000 degrees for a quarter second.
Would not want to be on a Graves Recovery crew trying to work those Well Done tankers out of their turrets and hulls.

Well. In Kuwait there was this puzzling thing of Iraqi tanks with their turrets blown off, or the entire tank flipped upside down, after we had sent our greetings via our Air Force.
Mavericks penetrated all the way through many tanks, only detonating when hitting the desert hardpan. Thus, flipped tanks.
They worked. Which really wasn't possible, since Beltway media had revealed and decided they didn't. Puzzling.

I did pick up the non-sequels, Bones irked me because they tried re-picking up the "fuzzies aren't native sapients" of the first book by saying they weren't native. Like any sensible system wouldn't make hundreds or thousands of years of occupancy into a claim. Never was tempted by Scalzi, read the blurb and noped right out.

I do glance at the daily updates by a few outfits, but no longer try to keep up with milblogger/online types (all sides).
Bottom line is all that matters. Russia went in to achieve specific political objectives, almost surely, and fairly obvious ones, and hard to see them stopping or withdrawing until they get them (well, most of them). However slippery any "wins" will be in the medium term.

Yes, that's where I left it too. I just felt in the hints I got of the plotline in Pournelle's collection books were too far. Syphon was down, there might be other problems for Kalvan and his empire going forward but a reformation for Syphon just wasn't going to cut it.

I disagree - theyve been cleaning up the east border around Kharkov, fixing the main forces in the east near the disputed regions, and moving along the coast from Crimea to Mariupol and not being stopped. I think about the WWII footage of that tail gunner who was so badly mangled from an AA burst they buried him at sea in the plane. My view ... Russia has underperformed, it is getting expensive for Putin in many ways, financial and domestic support, and maybe some breaking in the military ranks. ... But another twist, Finland Sweden seem to see the bigger threat and are supporting Ukraine resistance, even considering NATO as necessary.
The Zelansky side ..idk, seems willing to lose a lot more lives, or hopes sanctions will wear down Putin. China side ... beyond me, the smart people say Russia is now a China client state ... I'm not so sure, from my armchair general position.

1.) The Russian state is committed to their course... Subjugation of Ukraine. Perhaps with a rump state in the West, perhaps not. But a suzerainty, with no more Western influence or threat. And they will almost definitely achieve it.
2.) The US is desperate to precipitate a broader war, but will likely (hopefully) be unable to do so before Russia presents the fait accompli.
3.) The sanctions will be wholly ineffective, to the point of being a non-factor in the short to medium term. If Russia decides to counter by ceasing energy and materials exports, their needful things will outweigh the West's luxuries.

The TBD equipped VT-8 under Lt Cmdr Waldron went to sea. The VT-8 under Lt. Fieberling had the TBFs and only arrived in Hawaii after the carriers departed.
Six TBFs then flew on to Midway and attacked from there.
So between both VT-8s there were in fact three survivors of the attack on the Japanese carriers - two pilots and one gunner.

Now you have me thinking about my ongoing War in the Pacific game and whether I could fly reinforcement TBD/TBF bombers to Midway. Perhaps with drop tanks?
In the game the AI was obsessed with Midway, hanging out off Hawaii for a week after PH, and raiding and sinking ships I used to re-enforce and resupply it. I managed to get enough in to keep an actual invasion from happening.
An annoying thing was losing 2 BBs and a CA in an accidental collision with a Midway raid - like the fifth or so In Feb 42. Kido Butai deserves respect, as do the crack Betty squadrons.
The BBs were just on a workup cruise, Midway and back.

Gay was the only survivor of the main VT-8 attack, with the rest of the Hornet air group. Which was entirely disorganized due to the egotism of Hornet's CAG.

A difference in our organization from the Japanese was the carrier squadrons werent tied to the carrier. So the ship could just swap in a new squadron and sail on.
In contrast, when at Coral Sea when one carrier had its pilots shot up and the other had some damage, both had to stand down for Midway.

Although given the zany Japanese planning, they might have sent those two carriers around the Horn to attack the East Coast as a 'distraction' rather than have them in a sensible place.
I guess I should admit I don't think much of the MI plan, even without it being exposed by code breaking.
