It Wasn't There Again Today, How I Wish The ONT Would Go Away!

Friday night and the meming is easy. Next stop: Weekend! Anybody got any plans? I'm gonna be planting. It weird to me to be doing it this early, but average last day of frost around here is March 15, and that means that the “5 weeks before last frost” plants can go out this weekend. And what the heck, it's going to be 75 tomorrow anyway. Hope we make it, the moon is melting.

65 Life in the blue zones:

The Usual Suspects in Portland were out protesting, saying that mass transit (bus and light rail) should be free. This got written up in Bike Portland, a blog which unsurprisingly is dominated by leftist car haters who love bicycles.

One or two commenters chimed in: "Yes, transit should be free!"

However, about ten people (including the blog moderator) then commented that they used to ride mass transit through about 2019 or so, and encouraged their kids to do so; but now they won't ride mass transit, and they won't let their kids ride mass transit. Apparently having to constantly deal with the mentally ill and drug addicts (especially meth addicts) makes riding mass transit less than appealing.

They noted that making mass transit safe enough that normal people can ride again it is perhaps a higher priority than making it free.

Typical Portland - the people running the transit system are so afraid of not being perceived as "caring" and "inclusive", that they have given up on enforcing the most basic norms on light rail (for example, not allowing people to s**t on the seats).

They have successfully created a mass transit system that now caters solely to the deranged and addicted, that normal people won't use.

Their "caring" just takes localized misery and makes it generalized misery, and nobody comes out any better than they were.

The initial problem was at the beginning of Covid, when everyone stopped using mass transit in Portland, except for the druggies and the insane.

Now, as things get back to normal, no one wants to be one of the first normal people to get back on mass transit to be assaulted.

The transit authority needs to have a well-publicized campaign of "getting back to normal", where they bring in cops from all over the metro area to ride the trains (the trains only have two cars, so you don't need that many cops), plus constant fare checks on the trains. Keep that up for a couple of months, and the normies may start returning.

They don't have the guts to do that, of course. After all, the "activists" would scream bloody murder.

181 There's a trippy pizza place in Georgia called Mellow Mushroom. The inside walls and menus looked like a yes album. They redecorated most of that because hippies are all dead or billionaire tycoons now. The pizza is ok. The crust tastes a bit weird like it's cornmeal-based. They do have one good pizza with odd toppings called Mystic Karma. It has an oil and pesto sauce over spinach and garlic. It really works as a combo.

My go-to regular topping at any other place is all-meat, bacon, sausage, and pepperoni.

If I'm getting a calzone, which is a pizza taco, I get a sausage calzone.

185 During Lent, I make what we called 'Friday Pizza'; normal dough topped with Kosher salt, oregano, basil, Romano cheese, garlic chunks, and lots of olive oil.

It is critically important to make depressions in the dough before pouring on the olive oil.

My Mother, God rest her soul, loved onions and would have me cook sliced onions down with what seemed like 2 pounds of butter until translucent. Then, pour out that mixture onto one half of the pizza dough, fold it over and bake as usual.

I didn't get it either but it was Mom, you know?

187 Seriously, when I moved away from NY - first time I ordered a pizza, I called up and said I wanted a large pie. Lady on the phone goes "You want a large pie?" like all sarcastic and confused.

See, they don't call it plain or a pie. They call it "cheese". You say I'd like a cheese.

Four years later I'm back in NY, so excited to get some real damn pizza for once. I walk in the shop and out of habit I say "I'd like a slice of cheese". Woman looks at me super frustrated and squinty and says "You want a slice of cheese?"

Going solely by the tone of the question, it could have been the same woman. True fucking story.

Police staffing is pretty atrocious at this point. By law, Minneapolis must have something like 750 full time officers. I think they want to expand into the upper 800s. I've heard they're down to mid-500s before New Years.

Walz did a sit-down interview last weekend for local Sunday political media. He actually said juvenile carjackers shouldn't be charged as adults 'cause harsh enforcement wouldn't have an equal deterrent benefit. Such tortured logic.

What I loved most was how independent we were there. Each troop had its own camp area, but that consisted of a lean-to for the leaders in the center, and then platforms with tents, 2 boys per tent, in the woods around it. Our leaders stayed in the lean-to and did their own stuff while we all pretty much got to run wild through the woods all night. And take merit badge classes all day. One of my favorite spots was the reptile house where you could watch mice and rats being fed to the constrictor they had there.

That was about 1 in every 15 Italians, assuming the population of Italy was about 30 million. (It was half the number who went to the United States, but a bigger proportion of the population)."

438 .. and Berserker. There's a pizza joint up near IAH Bush Intercontinental Airport. "Brooklyn Pizzeria". The real thing. My co-worker IS from the Bronx, and when he took his first bite of a slice, he said "I"m back in New York!" They fly shipments of ingredients in, every week.

Sadly, there IS NOT a pizza worthy of the name here on this island. "Adequate", at best, but that, only marginally.

Know what makes up for that? *pours bourbon* yeah. Cheers!

Would be a poor choice to attack Kiev anyway, doesn't really fit into any sane strategery of coercion. The dog doesn't really want to catch the truck.

493 Russian action is not unlikely, but it would be aimed at 2 specific goals, one small, one much bigger and more complicated. 1 - stupid ethnic conflict in Donbass, easy to "settle" in sense, 2 - much bigger, basically guarantees Ukraine will be de facto "finlandized", not continue on present and logical path to more and more integration with western militaries, upgraded military capacity, with/without formal NATO membership.

Don't see how hitting Kiev would advance #2. Coercion doesn't require it, and it achieves nothing directly. Hitting Uke military assets in phases, with diplomatic off-ramps constantly offered, makes sense.

512 They locked me out of the last meeting at the Kremlin, but can't imagine Moscow wants any more ports - Sevastopol is just fine, one of the main reasons from grabbing Crimea, itself a ballsy move by modern standards. Along with Novorossiysk, plenty of Russian port capacity on the Black Sea.

The Russian formations most likely to be used in any ground action are in the east (Donbass) and south (Crimea) - but I cannot see what the objective would be there. Crimea is secure, Kerch bridges are in and the area cannot be readily isolated from Russian territory.

Possibly leverage operation, grab some more territory in the south to be returned when Ukraine agrees to limit its military future.

537 SMH one could say the leadership situation in the west is the worst it's been since perhaps the 1930s.

However even with an actual American president, or Brit or French leaders worth anything (narrator: current ones aren't, though ironically Macron probably gets the nod over the pathetic Boris) - there's an inherent problem and dilemma here.

Maintaining pristine Ukrainian freedom of action (as in developing its military, integrating it with/gaining from western militaries, even Ukrainian territorial integrity - are *not* vital interests. That simple. May lie somewhere on the spectrum, but not close to vital.

Russia grabbed Crimea 8 years ago, next to Saddam in 1990 the most naked old-school act of war (with international implications) since Korea or WWII (Falklands was just fun).

I haven't noticed it having any effect on American or west European interests. It's baaad, for sure. But not that important outside those directly affected. The lack of vital interests here is the key - the absurd absence of any seriousness or leadership in the west is actually just a detail.

Yes, I know there are those there that think I'm a nutjob, but I don't care.

No, we push the rhetoric around here, but I think you're one of the most level headed.

There is room for argument about the signs. For example, we don't live in particularly violent times, statistically speaking, but we're more aware of it because of technology. Of course one could argue that Jesus would have known that when He spoke of wars and rumors of wars.

Also we tend to have a dire view of things because the country we live in is coming undone. But we wouldn't be the first to have done so, and might not be the last. Or maybe enough people will wake up and turn around to salvage it.

Or maybe things go pear shaped with Russia and we're in a nuclear war next week, with no one really in charge on our end, which leads to worldwise chaos that the man of lawlessness comes to 'solve'. I don't know.

588 Fact is, a few thousand US troops in Poland will not do a thing to help Ukraine when Putin makes his move.

This is what happens when there's a vacuum of leadership in the West. The US is no longer a superpower, except on paper.

China will soon make its move on Taiwan, and like the Ukraine, we will be helpless to do anything about it.

589 You hope that the war scare with Russia is just that.

You expect there will be some small scale "incidents" that don't go anywhere and a bunch of face saving for everyone involved.

Ben then you realize the American leader is Joe Biden and realize we might get that WWIII we haven't worried about in 30 years.

590 Pretty funny. I stopped by the pub to have a beer, and a drunk guy asked me about "my awesome car" (1949 Olds). And he started in on my not selling it to him. I said what? And he said "I offered you 60 grand for it, standing right over there (vague wave)" I said "if you'd given me 60 grand for my car, it'd be your car". Then he wandered off. If the banks were open, I'd chase him down.

Well, I think the primary reason for the special kimchi fridge is that ideal conditions for kimchi are not what you would find in a standard Western refrigerator. Kimchi gets chewy and rubbery when stored in a standard fridge for very long.

Trump took truck loads of shit for stopping Nord Stream 2. We got endless articles about how he was going to break NATO and how he was turning our feckless allies against us by pushing NATO member to live up to their commitments and stop just relying on the US to defend them from Russian aggression, the entire reason NATO exists. And Germany, as the most powerful country in Europe, was the centerpiece of that argument.

One of the first things Biden did when taking office was give Putin Nord Stream 2. He got nothing in return and no reason was given other than Germany wanted it. And here we are.

Putin has a Master Blaster hold on Germany and the rest of NATO is a meaningless joke. It was never about Ukraine although that is a crucial piece for him, it was about breaking the NATO alliance on his doorstep.

Biden is a corrupt puppet. He did his part. NATO is an alliance in name only. We are on our own.

680 BTW, as far as drug-enabling and stuff like that, Portland ain't got nothin' on San Francisco. All the stories and such you've heard and seen, it's all real. You can see sales going down a block from both the state and federal courthouses. There's a police station *in* the middle of the Tenderloin; barely slows commerce down. Hell, you don't even need to be vaxxed to buy. Then you can walk a couple of blocks and do your junk in private with city-sponsored docent to make sure nothing bad happens.

Young Master Justin Castreau shows the template for western leaders: full of ego, inflexible, assured of their righteousness, and committed to a global agenda that we're not exactly privy to. I'm not sure if they are capable of backing down to a direct challenge to their authoritay, which the trucker protests are. I have a feeling this is going to be Thunderdome: them or us.

714 SFGoth, how about your own 'hood? Good friend lives near you, he never says anything about "conditions" in the city in general, but it's time I axed him about it. And he's still got one kid in town, in high school.

Your area was always a pretty clean and orderly one, go over the hill on Divisdadero into the Castro and still OK, just, well, you know, the Castro. Didn't get gritty til Market, but it was a typical thoroughfare-kinda grittiness.

Down the hill into the Mission was grittier. Up the hill towards the peaks was even nicer than Noe of course.

Been about 8 years since I've been there. Used to be there a few times a year.

Some short videos from tonight in Minneapolis. I'm going to bed now, but I will wander out in the morning to see how bad it was. Lack of police response does work me though.
