Supposedly, Republicans Considering Shutting the Government Down Unless Funds for Vaccine Mandates Stripped Out of Budget

Yeah I don't believe this. The GOP is useless. I don't even know why I'm linking this.

Several Republicans are considering shutting down the government if the next funding bill includes money for federal COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

Fox News Digital exclusively obtained a letter signed by a growing number of Republicans, led by Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, pledging to pull support from government funding legislation that includes language giving funds for vaccine mandates.

The current funding for the federal government will expire mid-February, meaning Congress will have to pass a continuing resolution or appropriations legislation to keep the lights on.

Good for Chip Roy and his band of doughty* fighters, but we all know the GOP is nothing but a favor bank for mega-business.

The 2022 agenda for House Republicans may be out of touch with the current political moment, but at least they can say they're trying. Over on the other side of the Capitol, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the leader of the Senate's Republican conference, has announced he's not even putting out an agenda for 2022.

According to reporting by Axios last month, McConnell told a room full of donors, lobbyists, and in-cycle senators that he would not be putting forward an agenda outlining the priorities for his conference should Senate Republicans regain a majority in 2022. When asked by CNN last week what the GOP agenda would be in a potential majority, McConnell responded, "That is a very good question and I'll let you know when we take it back." He went on, "This midterm election will be a report card on the performance of this entire Democratic government, the president, the House, and the Senate."

In other words, McConnell and GOP senators seem prepared to run solely on a platform detailing how bad the other guy is, and that scrupulously and intentionally avoids discussing what they intend to do about it.

As Rachel Bovard concedes, it is standard advice to not get in the way when your opponent is busy setting himself on fire.

But on the other hand: if you never tell voters what you're going to do, you have no mandate if you do win. So you do nothing.

Which is Mitch McConnell's eternal plan.

As more voters turn to Republicans in desperate hope they'll make the beatings stop, Republicans have to commit to doing it. Simply promising to defend the status quo won't cut it this time, particularly for new voters who have no long-held attachment to the party.

The multi-directional onslaught unleashed on voters by Democrats, public health tyrants, and the corporate sector requires a bold and kinetic response from Republicans.

Indeed.

I don't often quote the Joker, but Mitch McConnell is like someone who is always defending "The Plan," never stepping back to notice that The Plan... is horrifying.

Or perhaps he does notice that. Perhaps he just supports it.

It's the standard line, but Congress can do little on its own if it can't get veto-proof majorities. Promising anything right now other than committee based theater is going to be a lie.

However, this leaves open a messaging opportunity for whomever ends up actually taking control of the GOP in 2024 as the nominee for president. They will then get to decide what the platform is because the Congressional GOP has simply ceded the field.

Not to mention the long-time Republican voters who increasingly hate them for their constant failure theater and unwillingness to ever pursue victory on anything. This is a setup for more of the same, and way too many people know it.

"I'm better than X because I can't be any worse" is a piss-poor strategy. "I'm better than X because I will do Y instead" is much better.

137 The most exhausted, wrongheaded and self-defeating cliche in politics, and one only practiced by Republicans. When has it ever worked?

It works every few congressional sessions. They win control over one or both houses, continue to do nothing, then lose control after a while.

Democrats realized that no matter how crazy, stupid, corrupt, or evil they acted, in a few elections they will be back in power, and nothing ever gets rolled back....

Because the Republicans realized that if they do nothing the Democrats will eventually get so toxic that they will be thrown out of office for the reluctant alternative.

It works out great for both parties in terms of graft and changes for earning. Democrats get whatever they want and Republicans get the money they lust after.

We lose as the American people. Until this dynamic is broken.

161 I suspect you are getting calls from wholesalers wishing to gain the right to sell your home to investors and add a commission on the sale for themselves. These are usually people with no money to buy your house but wish to get it under contract which they then assign and transfer to an investor who is the real buyer but always will want to pay a very low price. You can think of it as a local scam even though this is perfectly legal to do provided you are dumb enough to go for it.

Or they will ask you for bank information to close a too good to be true sale.

I like a different approach. The cabinet and president and congress should have to sequester their assets upon assumption of their office. If they pass a budget that is underwater, their own asset base gets reduced proportionally. Spend 10% more than your revenue? Assets go down by 10% and are transferred to the Treasury. Spend 5% less than your revenue? Treasury increases your assets by 5% as a dividend.

Taxes would have to skyrocket, even if we cut 95% of all current discretionary government services (like defense, doj, doe, etc) - entitlements and interest on the enormous debt (aka mandatory spending) is $4.018T in 2022 - in 2021, the US govt collected $4.05T. So, we'd have a deficit before we paid anyone else. That's how bad this has gotten...and then the fed wants to raise rates...so the interest on the debt only goes up.

The anti-Catholic bigot who invented separation of church and state out of whole cloth and declared Korematsu kosher? C'mon now. Once Hugo Black, you never go back. Posted by: J.J. Sefton

Look to Black's later opinions on free speech etc. Black originally supported Gobitis but both he and Justice Douglas changed their votes on Barnette partially because the US was at war with Nazi Germany and its blood oaths to its leaders.
In Engel v. Vitale, the vote was 6-1 on the court and Hugo was more or less arguing consistently that forced speech is not allowed whether a secular pledge or a religious one as a condition of attending schools. His opinion on government aid to religious schools in Everson v. Wall actually cited the Jefferson letter as allowing NJ to aid religious schools regarding bus fares which was later extended by the court. Re Korematsu, by that time, FDR had appointed 8 out of 9 judges and it was in the middle of the war. There is some evidence that FDR misled the justices re intel.

Supposedly, Black regretted his opinion in Korematsu and did vote quite differently on segregation shortly thereafter.

Palo Alto is the center of the universe. It's ripples on a pond outward. A bungalow near University, 1200 sq ft 2 bed 1 bath can run $5M. Granted, those old lots are big. I did a place in Los Gatos, literally on the freeway and one of the most travelled main drags, sound wall on 2 sides of backyard, stock 1968, 3 bed 2 bath - $2.5M. And that was 2 years ago. Even Monterey which has been largely stagnant has exploded. What I can't figure out is why. At least half of the homes I do the client is leaving the state. Somewhere a vacuum has to be forming - unless somebody is buying it up.

There's basically 2 types here - either realtors or investment companies. The latter will buy anything in any condition. Realtors usually try the handwriting or envelopes that look like bills and you need to open. Typical start is "I have buyers looking for a home..." usually something like coming into state, love your area or home, try to make it personal. I used to do a lot of these for the ex. I do know that parts of the East Bay are not doing well - but there's been a huge shuffle with Covid. A lot of the ones staying in state are moving to my town, so they can buy larger homes, more property than they had in Mountain View. I have yet to learn of any investment firm buying the Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Los Gatos etc. type homes - they all seem to be families. If there's an exodus from CA, a vaccuum's gotta be forming someplace as most need to sell in order to buy. Hell, a bunch of commercial buildings literally popped up overnight here. Really? What about all the empty ones right now? They're too old? CA makes as much sense as the DOW.

Last time I checked, Netflix had nothing new I wanted to watch. All the older stuff I liked or had gone through had no new content, and all the new stuff was awful and stupid looking.

Netflix made its bones on having kickass older content and fresh releases I liked to see, plus fun streaming stuff I'd missed or never heard about.

Now its mostly "original" content nobody asked for like Don't Look Up, crappy documentaries, and lame knockoff crime shows. At least they've dialed back the gigantic catalog of queer shows and movies.

I'd say dump it but its bundled for super cheap with a ton of other channels I don't watch, so why bother? My brother gets Disney+ for as long as it takes to watch Mandalorian, then dumps it again.

Prime has a bunch of stuff I want to see but about 80% of it is behind a paywall and they can kiss my hairy white buns for that.

That's enough to cross Savannah off the list. That's one thing I'll hand to my city (and the two counties it straddles): they recognized about 15 or 20 years ago that the property taxes were limiting their growth as compared to nearby cities. They took a hard line that property taxes would *not* increase for ten years, and then they should cut at least once from years 10-15. They did it. The tax rates here are now competitive against the rest of the region.

But why? The purpose of the GOP at best is enriching the GOP, and at worst, enriching the GOP by taking money from the left to be Prog-lite.

Neither of those things are in good faith or have anything to do with representing voters. Our political class is a mix of corrupt and insane. We're not going to see a horse in the senate... but there is a good chance we'll see someone who CLAIMS to be a horse. Mitt Romney and Egg McMuffin and their like ARE the GOP, people need to just admit it already.

That's one thing I'll hand to my city (and the two counties it straddles): they recognized about 15 or 20 years ago that the property taxes were limiting their growth as compared to nearby cities. 427 414 CA Democrat politicians are DYING to blitz Prop. 13 here to jack property taxes up through the roof. It's a twofer for them: they get all that lovely cash, AND they get to stick it to the bourgeoisie.

OTOH, Prop. 13 is kind of a third rail in CA politics, so they're trying to nibble away at it instead of going for the whole burrito.

Mitsubishis are cheap, so I suspect that's how. The ones I see and have been in recently are pretty bare-bones and simple and have a price to match. They get you from A to B with no frills. Not my style and I don't like them, but there's a place for them in the market. As far as I know, Mitsubishi might be the last player in that space since Kia and Hyundai moved up-market.

455 Oregon actually is pretty good for big business, but the way the tax structures work, they cannot offer as attractive a tax break deal as other states.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor

Generally, what OH does is provide BIG FIRM with zero property taxes for decades. The city though, doesn't really lose. It makes it up in property taxes levied on the employees of the new plant. One of the first things New Albany did is put into motion annexing the real estate that Intel was looking at. It was farm land before the Intel offer. So, the tax burden, just like always, will fall on the working person.

It was only when he declared that COVID was over that his COVID rule violations became a super big deal.

It is so expensive. Probably one of the more expensive colleges in the nation. For an art degree. They're getting big into tv and film now and making connections with Hollywood. They better have rich parents.

504 These days with the price of heating oil that may not be a bad business move.

What's a normal heating oil tank? 200-300 gals?

So between 50 and 75 gals @ 3.50 gal? == 175$ - 262.$

Yeah. I'd put in for that.

506 Spotify is going to remove Neil Young music.

Too bad
I know he's an out-of-touch hippie douche, but I'm not going to lie and say I'm not a fan of his music from the 60's through the '90's.

I listen to him on Spotify

We've been where we are now since 1993 ($375K) and, well we fudged a bit on the cost of an almost teardown remodel 2002-2003 we're paying $6K a year. I'd guess current valuation as a single residence is around $2.5M.

House to the left, they bought almost new ('60s), they're probably paying a third what we are.

House to the right, they bought maybe five years ago, they're paying at least three times what we are.

We have a far bigger lot than anyone else here, the state is trying to force municipalities to allow multiple-units on a lot and ours would be good under that law for three or four. I keep telling my wife "let's put it up as a makememove at $7.5M" but so far no.

Neil Young deleted the letter. As it turns out, he sold most of the rights to his music. He had no right to demand Spotify remove "his" music. He is maybe a victim of elder abuse. There needs to be a conservator appointed. Who really wrote that letter?

"Do not play my music that I sold the rights to."

Hahah this is incredible, and it's a testament to the fake news ecosystem that this HIGHLY RELEVANT fact about Neil Young's music wasn't omitted from coverage.

I get the constant drumbeat of offers for low-cost car insurance (ha, I'm in Lousy-ana) and for a vehicle extended warranty. We all get those last. But somehow one of my late cats got on a list somewhere, and I get hard copy mail for extended warranties addressed to "Tatiana Sibirsky."

I'd really be scared if they listed an actual vehicle for her.
