Gun Thread: Dark Range Edition

dark range scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Welp, it hasn't been the greatest week here at the ol' blog. Late last year we lost Tami, and this week learned of the passing of our pals Oregon Muse and redc1c4. These were three people I had never met in person, yet each one was important to me. This blog and the community it has inspired is very special. It offers a refuge from a world gone mad, and provides just a little bit of stability in our otherwise chaotic and uncertain daily lives. Make no mistake, the friendships we develop here are just as tangible as those in the more traditional 'real' world. The holes left by individuals such as these will never go away, but with time, do become a little bit easier to navigate around. Raise your glass to those we have lost, and appreciate those you have while you have them.

With that, let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

Happy Birthday!

012322 jmb scaled.jpg

Today is John Moses Browning's 167th birthday. And he doesn't look a day over 29!

And speaking of Browning...

Boy howdy did I ever get an amazing response from my lame-o pictures of the 1911 taken in a lightbox last week, both in the comments and later by email. Thank you all very much! In case you missed it, here's one of the pictures I asked for help with.

012322 bad 1911 rs scaled.jpg
terrible, terrible picture

So the overwhelming consensus was the stark white background was freaking out the camera's light sensor and underexposing the gun portion of the image. I think I have that right. Anyhoo, the lightbox came with a few other backgrounds (black, gray and green) so I tried a couple of them out.

Here's gray:

012322 1911 ls gray scaled.JPG

012322 1911 rs gray scaled.JPG

Here's green:

012322 1911 ls green scaled.JPG

012322 1911 rs green scaled.JPG

Well will you looky right there! It worked! Oh sweet baby Jesus it worked!!! A bigly Gun Thread Thank You to all of you photographers with big brains who identified the problemo. I really appreciate it!

Now two questions; a) which background do you like better, and 2) is the color spelt grey or grAy?

First up, our pal Scuba_Dude heads to the range with a purpose!

After so many months since I last fired a shot when I was at the TXMoMe, I decided to dust of the Sig case and head to the indoor range close to me.

When I got there I decided I wanted to start checking out potential conceal carry firearms. I plan on checking a new one out every time I go to the range. The first one up was a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield in 9mm. I found the gun fit nicely in my right hand but when I would then put my left hand into position my thumb came close to getting into the trigger well. Something to be conscious of in the future. The trigger was decent but the reset just was not as crisp as my Sig. A couple times I thought I had reset the trigger when I had not. and I think that led to one of the rounds being struck but it did not fire. You could see the dimple left by the firing pin on the primer but the round did not go off. I showed it to one of the RSO's who took the round and put it in his gun where it did fire after he pulled the trigger. Strange. I also had problems manipulating the slide lock but I will put that down to me.

So my drill was this. Put target at 7 yards and took 14 shots (2 mags) at the center of the target. Then 7 shots one handed in my dominant hand at the head of the target. 7 shots one handed in my weak hand just to the right of the center of the target. Then 7 shots normal stance just above center of target.

012322 scoob MPShield7Yds scaled.jpg

I then folded the target and shot at the small circle targets at the bottom. I numbered where each shot had hit. Total of 49 shots at the target.

012322 scoob MPShield7dsFinal scaled.jpg

Next I took out my Sig Sauer P226 Legion RX1 in 9mm and proceeded to do the exact same drill at 7 yards. Only difference was I only took 10 shots (1 mag) for my 1st shots on the target. Then folded the target and shot at the small targets as fast as the range would permit. Left to right on top then left to right on bottom. 10 shots.

012322 scoob SigP2267ydsFinal scaled.jpg

I then put my last target at 10 yards and repeated the same drill as above. Just that I shot 30 rounds at the small circle targets when I folded the target.

I think I did Ok, had a really bad flyer with the Sig weak hand at 7 yards, That hit near the bottom of the target (I circled it) but I think I did a little better when I was shooting at 10 yards.

Nice shooting and great report, amigo. Thanks for sending it in!

More Flintlocks
Recently we featured a couple of flintlock shooting videos which always draws considerable interest. Here's a (hour long) video on how they made them in the olden days.

If you're ever in Virginia, I'd encourage you to visit Colonial Williamsburg! If you are a fan of American colonial history, it's a must-see.

More NRA Shenanigans?
More accurately, more Wayne LaPierre shenanigans? If this is true, it pisses me off, and I am beginning to really, really, really not understand how LaPierre hasn't been kicked to the curb.

Anyone heard of the Guns & Gadgets guy? Is he legit? Are you hearing the same reports, and this story in particular?

******

Full-Auto 1911
A while back we looked at a fully automatic 1911. Our pal Blasternaz later spoke up saying he knew the guy featured in the video, Bob Ferris, and had actually fired the very weapon! Here are a couple more videos on the gun.

Thanks for the follow-up, Blasternaz!

******

Some time ago, we had a discussion on what to do after a self-defense shooting, and though there was a general consensus on the big items, opinions varied on some of the finer details. I ran across a couple of videos from the Armed Attorneys which might be worth your time. I think part of being a prepared individual is running through scenarios like this in your mind and mentally rehearsing the key steps you would take so you're not making it up as the smoke clears.

What do you all think? Agree? Disagree?

Also, "you people" seem to be all the time losing your shit in canoes. 'Sup with that? Here's what they suggest if it happens to you.

There are some electronic word games that will not accept one way or the other of spelling the word-of-which-there-are-50-shades. (Actually, technically, there are 254 shades on a computer, if you exclude full white and full black.)

17 I think that the green helps bring out the detail on the grips say and lightens them so they show up whereas even the gray darkens the grips a bit.

Both are much better than the straight white.

21 Gray, Weasel. The green makes the finish look too green. Also, as others said last week, you also need light coming in from the sides, and maybe one from the top. But, never straight on.

Posted by: OrangeEnt at January 23, 2022 07:07 PM (7bRMQ)

22 Green seems odd but I think it shows more detail.

Posted by: Tonypete at January 23, 2022 07:08 PM (mD/uy)

24 Scuba_Dude, I think you meant to write "one hand" not "off hand" on your target. If you have a dominant AND a weak "off-hand" I want to shake all three of yours.

But, not bad groupings at all. If anything, with that weapon it seems your weak hand is steadier - all left-right, compared to the head group.

Posted by: GWB at January 23, 2022 07:08 PM (A2G/3)

25 Weasel, the Guns n Gadgets guy is legit. Been watching him for about a year or so now. His content is pretty much 2A news.
And it sounds like this stuff is coming out of the NYS lawsuit against the NRA, so there is that. How much bad stuff leaked verses good stuff.
At this point in time I just can't trust the NRA. But that is my opinion, I could be wrong.

But it would be one handed dominant, one handed weak.

And I was surprised that I shot the M&P better one handed weak than I did one handed dominant.

39 Weasel,
Thanks for bringing up the "Gunsmith of Williamsburg" video. I've mentioned it in past threads. My VHS copy just plain wore out. The DVD version is holding up so far. And it is available on YT. I probably watch it a few times a year to remind myself to take the time to do a good job with firearm related matters. Plus, I enjoy the David Brinkley narration.

The first time I went to Colonial Williamsburg the rifle Gussler made was still on display. It is a masterpiece. Not sure if it is still displayed.

If you get to Williamsburg prepare to spend serious time in the gunsmith shop.

47 Poured a wee dram of Buffalo Trace, in honor of Absent Horde.

Oh, and moar bad news. It does appear that The Arms Room, a rather nice indoor range, store and classroom facility in League City, TX, has gone kerplunkt. It occupied the space left vacant by the very last Circuit City store ever built, and the late William James had bought the building, land and lot next door, in order that the shopping center developer could not ever squeeze him out.

In that, he succeeded, but alas, his heirs seemed to have not been able to keep it going. *sigh*

I just had renewed and a month later they sent a letter telling me it was gonna be expired soon. That did it. Eff those people. Then I find out this useless dork is using the money to play around? No thanks.

I also quite GOA because (get this) they send you letters with big GUN OWNERS OF AMERICA on the envelope. Nothing like telling the world that here's where a gun owner lives. I told them to take me off their lists and why and they did do that. I don't think they changed their policy of putting their name in big letters on the envelope.

66 I just read an excellent new biography of Browning: "The Guns of John Moses Browning, The Remarkable Story of the Inventor Whose Firearms Changed the World" by Nathan Gorenstein, 2021. I highly recommend it.

One detail I found rather amusing in it is not gun related. Browning was a Mormon. His father was an early convert and had three wives. John Moses was a son by his second wife. At one point JMB thought about following his father's example and taking a second wife. However, when he told his wife about this idea, her response (according to family tradition) was a very simple one: "Over your dead body." Browning dropped the idea.

Posted by: JTB at January 23, 2022 07:29 PM (7EjX1)

71 And gay or not, the green color does make the details on the grip show up better.

Better slightly than the gray and of course the solid white just buries all the detail.

72 Oh, and moar bad news. It does appear that The Arms Room, a rather nice indoor range, store and classroom facility in League City, TX, has gone kerplunkt.

I stopped in there a couple of times and they seemed to have very little in the way of inventory. I don't know how you could not make $$ with a gun store these days but I guess not having stuff to sell would do it.

74 Finally, a range report:
I put my big-boy pants on and ventured out in 15-degree NH weather. Also, my fleece-lined jeans, my long sleeve t-shirt, my flannel shirt, my parka, my snowboard gloves and my blaze orange wooly watch cap. Quite a fashion figure, huh?
LGS guy sold me some Eley .22 ammo. Match, at $17.50/box, and Team, at $16.00. He wanted me to let me know if they were any good.
Short answer, yes.
Longer answer is real cold weather affects barrels and ammo. Both the Christiansen Ranger and the Ruger Precision Rimfire devoured them both, grouped around 1/2" at 50 yds, but threw an occasional flyer, largely after the barrel cooled when switching to the other rifle.

87 Joined private range. Yesterday was orientation and gun handling 'test' that was a one-on-one with an RSO.

The test was mostly to see if you can keep the barrel pointed downrange, load and clear the gun.

They had .22 pistols for those that didn't bring their own guns or never shot before. Those lanes moved a bit slower with on the spot training. The takeaway is that these were all volunteers, very helpful, and even if you never shot before you could join the club.

122 Popping in for just a sec, got a puppy I need to wear out before it gets dark!

Looks like somebody already told you digital camera sensors want white to be a 16% gray. Not sure what you're using for your pix, but even phones have some pretty sophisticated software to fix that shot on the white background - just dial back the shadows (not exposure).

The gray is the best background, too much color transfer/reflection from green - plus if you have a nice wood or G10 grip, the simultaneous contrast will make the colors look way off. You could in fact shoot on a black background and find the gun pops. But the gray card you've got has nice, even lighting and that's good enough IMO. Nice!

LaPierre knows he's drawing scrutiny and he seems to be daring people to do something about it. But he seems to control the board and has a lock on that flank. Nothing good is going to happen at the NRA until he is gone.

I expect some of these expenses will be reviewed as potential income for different people and that leads to tax fraud and evasion charges.

Posted by: Darrell Harris at January 23, 2022 07:53 PM (mdjgu)

140 The master opener card arrived and as I feared it did not work. Other sources on the internet suggested an air wedge. This is a thin bladder that would insert into the gap in the shelf and a hand bulb inflates it applying pressure. This one says up to 300 lbs. Insert. Pump. (Hey that's not a straight line!) and in short order the shelf opened by breaking the wooden mount for the plunger on the lock. Not ideal but the damage is minimal and reparable. And the contents are out but of course later fell in the creek. And as I suspected, the wiring from the external socket for the battery pack to the lock mechanism was not well connected and that is why that fail safe, umm, failed. 2/4

Posted by: GWB at January 23, 2022 07:54 PM (A2G/3)

143 I think this design needs improvement. First it seems possible that the issue with the internal wiring is user error (read me). It is essentially a 3.5mm stereo extension cable. The plug was inserted into the lock mechanism but not fully seated thus causing the external battery pack to be not useful. I may have pulled it loose during installation. This could do with either a permanently attached cable or a locking one. I can see why they don't. The lock itself is a generic made in China component and there needs to be some flexibility on cable length, etc. But it would resolve this issue. 3/4

146 Another thing might be to have the batteries accessible externally. Again, I can see why they wouldn't. You have the generic lock component as well as disturbing the lines of the floating shelf. I am sure it could be done but it would be more difficult to make. Perhaps some mechanical or magnetic fail safe that allows opening when there is no power. Regardless in its current design it seems somewhat risky.

I am looking at the thing now trying to see how I might replace that wooden mount with a 3D printed one that incorporates some type of mechanical failsafe. 4/4

The only reason this happens is because the IRS, and legislatures, and gov. allows it. There has to be auditing and transparency requirements, as well as justification for extraordinary expenses when spending other people's money.

The reason gov. allows it is because the "right people" are in control and they want to harass deplorables and not their friends. We have built a corrupt society and something has to change.

When the Obama thing blew the lid of handgun ammo pricing, and then with Joetato and WuHu bringing it back even stronger, ammo pricing tempts me into just selling all three and getting a Sig P229 Nitron.

Two CCW ago, in CO, where you gotta take a one day thing with a certified instructor, the guy leading the class was the chief range guy for the Adams county sheriff department, and on its lead SWAT team. They were first into the Arvada theater where the guy did the batman mass murder.

He carries a Sig P229 and described a hollow point load he always uses that he claims makes it as deadly as most any 45.

174 One detail I found rather amusing in it is not gun related.

I'm going to hazard a guess that the early Mormon theology regarding multiple wives was based in no small part upon actuarial tables that showed that women tended to outlive men and therefore there was a surplus balance of widows vs widowers.

Armed wives could change that equation.

If the reports are right, and I tend to believe G&G was accurately reporting what was filed, it makes this Life Member regret actually becoming a Life Member. I still get tons of calls from NRA, but I keep telling them that GOA is getting my money now until Wayne leaves. I'm disappointed by that since I think NRA has more clout, but Wayne's behavior disgusts me and I don't want anything from me going into his pocket.

I have only shot a 1911 .45 a few times. I was surprised, actually, how easy it was to shoot, and did not think it was heavy (about 1984). Since it shoots a heavier but slower projectile than a 9 mm, it's not hard for a modest built person to shoot.
I have shot a lot of bad 9 mm pistols that I frankly hated, but there are a lot of really fine 9 mm semi-autos that have bigger mags than a typical .45 1911.

I did get to shoot my new Glock 17, Gen 5 last December, and really liked it a lot. Lighter, easy to grip and shoot. Shot great right out of the box.
My son and I shot together at the range, and a funny thing happened. My son is natural left hander, and shot the Glock left handed. He kept rubbing the magazine release button, and after every shot, the Glock would jam, and stovepipe a round. Bothered me really bad, until we figured out what was happening.
So this is not a pistol for left-handed shooters.

187 No range time, too cold to go outside, but hoping to get a group to an indoor range next week.

Side note on revolvers: lead bullets kind of suck. Even in a snubbie, digging all that lead out requires solvents or extra elbow grease.

One of the nice things about having a magnum-compatible revolver is that you can shoot the weaker rounds (i.e. .38 Special) and then at the end of the session throw some jacketed magnums through as "bore cleaners." This actually works.

I've been hoarding my .32 H&R Magnum rounds, but I'm going to have to touch a few off after using .32 Long because digging that lead out is a pain.

It's already been said, but both of the new background colors in the 1911 photos do a good job of bringing out the details. The original photos do have one point in their favor though, because they make it harder to see the big circular reassembly scratches on the left side of the pistol. The scratches even go up onto the slide! I'm not judging or anything, just saying. And it's JMB's birthday today, too...

200 Weasel, you might have to change the backgrounds depending on the gun's finish. That 1911 looks parkerized (or something close to it, so the green or gray sets off its color pretty well. If you photograph a gun w/ a different finish, say a Colt Python in the Ultimate Bright Stainless Steel finish which is super shiny, a darker color might contrast better and thus, do a better job of showing off that finish.

* "potentially" because the court without pausing or breathing hard makes epochal rulings that are not only absurd but also well outside their competence to begin with - but such an easy, actually routine thing like the Second Amendment ..... AWOL for generations, usually won't even consider the cases, and when they do, micron-sized narrow rulings - except for Heller ..... which is toilet paper to the states and inferior courts, so far

219 Range duty day this past week. Incredibly beautiful day. As has been the case for a while, rather slow in terms of traffic. Speculation is - ammo prices/availability, but who knows.

Another RO had his new CMP M1 in .308. Beauty. However - en bloc clips wouldn't load. They'd go down in, to a point, but couldn't get them seated all the way. Weird, have never seen this. He single fired, and got his elevation clicks @50 and 100 yds. He's going to consult with CMP this week.

Was able to set up steel on the small range end of the day, had it to myself, and puffed on a nice Avo Classic robusto while practicing with both the XD9 and the Colt Magnum Carry revolver.

221 I have not been to the range but just cleaned out and divided a reloader's 20 year stash. Several thousand rifle and pistol reload rounds of dubious quality, primers, dies, powder, brass, mags, etc. Set up a young man for reloading who is the serious and responsible type with part of it, his father with some more including factory ammo, and I took on the troublesome stuff with some equipment and obscure factory ammo like 32-20.

233 In 1941 and early 1942, the US Army embarked on a project to see if the M1911 could be converted into an SMG. The conversion included a stock, extended barrel (10", 12" and 16" if I remember correctly), and, of course, removing the sear to allow full auto fire from 20 round magazines. It didn't fare well in testing against the M1 Carbine. Users said the stocked pistol conversion handled poorly and was difficult to shoot due to its configuration. The introduction of M1 Carbine and M3 Grease Gun in mass quantities killed the project.

237 Also today sharon(willow's apprentice) rented a couple of pistols (she's going through a selection phase right now). A Glock 48 and a Sig P320 - the M17 style one.

First, the Sig. I was shooting my P226 today so it was a good comparo. I'm going to say that as a shooter really not much difference between the two. Despite the polymer frame, very close in heft. And the P226 gives you DA/SA. Then there is the "modularity" of the P320. If you value that, then there it is.

Buying new off the shelf a P320 is a couple hundred less than a new P226, so there is that, too.

Given that I already have the P226 I don't think I would pursue a P320 for purchase. But if I had a space for a full size 9mm in the stable, I think I would.

239 The grip was a big part of the BHP design. Not sure why they would change that just to stack a 17 round mag. I'm not a huge SA35 fan. There seem to be a lot of teething issues and the quality doesn't seem to consistently be there. I would pay for the new BHP if it felt right compared to the original. It doesn't.

240 He carries a Sig P229 and described a hollow point load he always uses that he claims makes it as deadly as most any 45.

I like a 9mm Sig with that round. I carry a 9mm Sig with that round. The problem is they make that round in .45ACP, too, and it performs even better.

(not to you, just in general) Carry what you shoot well, but don't feel the need to justify what you carry. That guy that you see twice a year at the range isn't carrying your pistol every day and making the decisions for your family. Those are yours and yours alone.

I understand that FN changed the guts of the new Hi-Power so field stripping the gun can be done with a flip of a lever instead of removing the slide stop, which required the user to hold the slide just so in order to do this task. Also, there are a few countries that still use the High Power as their issue sidearm; Canada still uses leftover WWII Inglis-made weapons, and Australia still uses FN-made weapons. FN might be trying to pitch the new BHP to military users to replace these old guns.

Congrats. The 10/22 is high on my "everybody should have one" list. I bought a second one last year that I'm going to build up for my wife. I just got a Boyd's stock and ordered a barrel. Expected wait time 10 weeks! Guess that'll give me plenty of time to round up other parts and send the bolt out for some work.

294 I was also shooting my Ruger P95 today. The good one that shoots all the time. Except today. Some sort of magazine issue with a Promag 15 rounder. I am going to have to diagnose this, and if its not something obvious, off to the trash it goes.

295 whig thanks for the SCOTUS info, that's definitely the case.

And for some reason, people were discussing 32-20 at the range this week. Probably because one of the Schutzenguilders, who is an amazing expert on historic guns, was there.

On the M1/.308 - whig if you mean the block down inside the magazine, up against the front side, yes, it was there. White, appeared to be plastic, which surprised me, but I have zero background on the .308s.

I agree, but the biggest thing in SIG's favor is cost. An M17/M18 is about $750 retail. The new BHP will come in at $1300 retail. Unless the military in question is nostalgia heavy for their old BHP's feel, ergonomics, and history, I'd bet on SIG. Canada and Australia aren't known for spending tons of money on their militaries, let alone military sidearms. Cost may be the deciding factor in any future competition.

308 I did order a couple holsters for the P365XL (one OWB, one IWB) so when I manage to get it sighted in I'll be ready to carry it. Maybe next weekend.

FWIW one of the only places I've found that makes molded tuckable IWB holsters with about every available light/laser option is a little gun store near Tryon, NC. Gunners Haven. He has a storefront but also does internet/mail order. Worth a call or email if you are looking for something particular.

He was the only one who could fit my 365XL with the Crimson Trace light (not laser). None of the big names had the mold. Very reasonable, too. Something like $35 or so for the appendix IWB tuckable, and I've worn it daily for two or three years now.

Good guy. Marine IIRC. Highly recommended to anyone looking for holsters.

327 Shooting with the aspirin shooters, I'm learning stuff.
Like any .22 that uses 10-22 mags, only use the 10-rounders. All of the larger ones move fore and aft in the mag well, and the angle of stripping makes a huge difference in accuracy. Too much of an angle will scrape a miniscule amount of lead off one side of the bullet, causing a minute wobble.

Any Americans In Burkina Faso?

Gunfire rang out late Sunday near the home of Burkina Faso's embattled President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, raising the specter that a military coup might still be under way after mutinous soldiers seized a military base earlier in the day.

Sure! The P-07 a polymer frame with the CZ 'inner rails' setup. Takedown is ala the CZ 75. It's NATO spec, 15 round mags in 9mm. You can swap out the 9mm slide and put on a factory .22 adapter (the Kadet). That way you use the same frame, same trigger to run your .22 drills.

Great, great pistol.

456 187 Side note on revolvers: lead bullets kind of suck. Even in a snubbie, digging all that lead out requires solvents or extra elbow grease.
Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at January 23, 2022 08:15 PM (llXky)

That's the manufacturing of the piece. Shooting cast really requires bore diameters not increase from cylinder/chamber to muzzle.

Cylinders are pretty much gang bored and the holes usually don't match and frequently a a couple thou undersized. Torquing the barrel into the frame often introduces a constriction there. Either or both of these result in a bullet being squeezed down to less than bore diameter and then you get gas cutting and lead deposited ahead of the bullet.

I've fixed that in a couple of revolvers. There's worse ways to spend my time.

460 IMG - main fix is resizing the cylinder chambers, correct?

I get a tolerable level of leading in the Model 66 from lead bullets (just some dry scrubbing with all-copper ChoreBoy wrapped around an old .38 brush), but in my snubs I've opted to go with plated bullets. Laziness, er, efficiency, really.

I actually got a kit to check bore size on the 66, but the damn uneven number of rifling grooves makes measurement challenging. I've tried to regulate leading via charge/pressure, seems to work OK. Same-same with lead in the 1911, 200g SWC standard (like many guys), usually just a bit of lead "wash" near the chamber.

470 56 I'm still on the hunt for my "unicorn"--the new Springfield Armory SA-35. Its their updated take on the Browning Hi-Power. Haven't found one in person yet, only glowing online reviews and empty stock when checking brick and mortar stores and online sites.

Very late on this thread but it seems that the hangup on availability could be a problem with the extractor failing after about 1000 rounds. People who have sent them back to Springield get a new extractor and no further problems. They may be replacing the extractor on manufactured ones before shipping which would explain the delays and they don't want to tell people that.

471 I looked it up.Rev. Simon Woodman of Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church. I have never seen Baptist clergymen wear collars but maybe they do things differently in England. Bloomsbury in London was always the center of progressivism in England and if you read their website they are very left wing.

How much equipment are we going to accidentally leave the Russians?
----
Don't know. The Russians haven't dropped off their requirements list yet.

473 426 Great accent.

Adorable and sexy. I had an acquaintance from SA who was a six, but her voice was a ten!
----
I'm probably not adorable and definitely not sexy but everyone seems to love my accent - I spent 16 odd years in East Africa and another 26 in South Africa.
LOL

474 Gray! The lightbox overlay needs to be GRAY! The green overlay imparts way too much of a color cast, whereas the GRAY (hint, hint) is NEUTRAL and allows the natural color of the gun to be seen as it should be, not with an imparted color from the plastic overlay. GRAY! GRAY! All the way! GRAY!

475 392 I still use Upper Volta for Burkina Faso.

Hate these modern, fashionable, pretentious names for countries.

Changed it's name on August 4, 1984.
Anytime I see mention of this country I am reminded (yet again) of (yes, I'm beating a horse to death) my fourth-grade teacher. A big "international day" was coming up in school and as part of it, we all had to write book reports on various countries. I was assigned Upper Volta. I immediately corrected my teacher and said it was "Bourkina Fasso" (the way it was spelled in my almanac at the time). Did she immediately kick my ass for doing that? No. Hell, I think she gave me extra credit.

To the topic at hand: a range visit looms in the near future. Things are pretty dismal in Catch Thirty-Thr33 land so I need the break. A Zen moment. A time to focus and recalibrate my brain. Range time forces you into focus.
