One would think that after the debacle in Afghanistan, where we left Americans, allies, and more than $80 billion of military equipment, that the Biden junta would try something different. Like being just a little bit better than catastrophically, pathetically bad at...everything! What sort of contingency planning did they do...I mean besides working tirelessly to sculpt the media response and improve the administration's image? Clearly none.

Are they confident of their marvelous communications skills and are betting...hoping...that they can play some silly sleight-of-hand game with the American people? The answer is yes. They have such contempt for America and Americans that they are incapable of operating in any way other than craven political triangulation, damage control, and most of all the traditional Biden mindset of "What's in it for me?" But they suck at it. Just like they suck at everything else. We have elected (Hah!) the most shockingly incompetent administration possibly in history. Look at their track record. The policy changes they made were primarily executive orders; they were almost perfectly incapable of legislative changes. Hell...they couldn't even buy off Manchin and Synema and get their big, economy-killing infrastructure bill passed. How difficult is it to bribe a politician? Yet they couldn't even manage that because of their arrogance and inability to identify potential stumbling blocks; something that any competent executive understands is vital to success. I guess we are lucky that the flaccid-thinking apparatchiks who are pulling the drooling, nasty imbecile's strings aren't better at basic political machinations, but I imagine the Americans who may be caught in a war zone in Ukraine, or were (and possibly are) stuck in Afghanistan would much prefer some simple competence, even if it came with mean tweets.

Sometimes they need to feel it good and hard. My wife is fairly liberal. As of a couple months ago, the "State" is raining hellfire down on us. Their actions are unwarranted, there are no good options and no end in sight.
My wife is slowly starting to realize that the "State" is not your friend and they do not care about you. But we're upper-middle class, so the "State" has always been sort of a fuzzy, abstract notion to her. Lower income folks who cannot afford competent legal representation know full well what the state can do. They feel the brunt of it much more often than the upper middle classes.

We have elected (Hah!) the most shockingly incompetent administration possibly in history. Look at their track record.
I read this and think about that NJ Biden voter who showed up at that mandate protest rally over the weekend. She's angry about what Biden has done, but she didn't express regret for voting for the guy. I shouldn't throw stones - it took me years to lose my respect for the GOPe after blindly following them for most of my adult life. That said, she and the other Biden voters have to admit regret before we can move on as a country. If my personal example is any indication, we could be in for a rough ride.

Americans in Ukraine: the country is about to be invaded by Russia. If you want out, leave now. You want your troops to get accidentally bombed or attacked? I have a TEFL certificate and did it in Rome. I could have lived pretty well if I wasn't sending so much money back home every month to pay off the credit card debt I had accumulate to simply get to Italy.
And yeah, it's pretty much conversation. The idea is the all English classroom, so early levels are very simple conversations and later can go pretty much any direction. There are textbooks to help guide things as well.

What ended up working better than all of those was showing young people that they were being lied to by the tobacco companies. That takes the onus off the individual and puts it on something they can blame - it makes the 'victim' into a figure that is 'right' and has agency to change.

Collector cars and even semi collector, ie 20-30 year old unique cars have gone absolutely nuts. I bought one such car, last year. I can sell it for $15-20k more now without any effort. On BAT they are going for $30k more. It was a better investment than real estate on a percentage basis. The world has gone truly mad.

Yeah the bids are insane this year. I think its a combination of a few things, such as no auctions last year (so people saved up), the desirability of cars going through the roof as new cars are so computerized, controlled, and clinical to drive, and at least some of it is people have spent the previous year watching shows about cars and just have gone nuts wanting them.

It was like a year later that Russia tried to invade Greece and we sent tanks and soldiers and planes to help defend Greece, which made the Soviets back off.
I agree that nobody wanted to go to war again, but Russia was basically broke, out of ammunition and arms, and most of its fighting men were dead. You think WE were war weary? They had nothing left. We could have pushed them back.
The problem is that we were allegedly allies with the USSR, and pointing guns at them immediately at the end of the war would have looked really awful. By that point the lefty idiots were in charge of France, England, etc. They would have seen the US as some kind of conquering invasion force for a new Empire and freaked out. The public in the USA would not have understood what was going on and hated Truman.

When I was in college, enterprising bootleggers would make Reservation Runs to get cigarettes. They'd take orders from the whole dorm, mark 'em up a bit, and pocket the difference. I care about sovereign individual nations being simply attacked because a bigger country wants something they have or wants them to do things differently. We hashed this out long ago in the Treaty of Westphalia, and it was so ingrained into our consciences that even Hitler had to come up with plausible excuses for invading countries.
I don't think its worth our blood and treasury to fight Russia over there to stop them, but its worth our time and all the pressure we can bring to punish or dissuade Russia from being evil.

As for ports, Sevastopol supplements Novorossiysk, which has decent capacity (had to check it out for possible use once).
There are some limited areas in the east with ethnic Russians where there's a real/stoopid issue with this world's finest "ethnic" distinction, which predates Putin and is incredibly dumb, but real. Russia has not the slightest interest or intention, or probably even capacity, to "take" all of Ukraine.

So I just finished walking the dog. It took 10 minutes, and we cover about a quarter of a mile...lets call it 450 meters. For me that is 515 steps. For Joey, its about 4,112 steps. On four legs. It takes us about 12 minutes, included pee times, and making the dookie, so for him, its 84 dog minutes. A few minutes longer if he sees a squirrel.
He's happy. I'm cold.

The powers that be want to curtail online tobacco sales. They've made it a requirement that the tobacco retailer has to collect the tobacco tax in the state the product is shipped to, if the state has such a tax. That's in addition to the sales tax. I think only a handful of states do this, and Utah IIRC prohibits tobacco sales online anyway.

The only advantage is Samizdat informal media technology has improved to the extent that official narratives can be trashed in hours and facts that contradict official explanations can be obtained by those that look. Much easier than having to rely on illegal broad band receivers or smuggled information for news.

I saw a snippet of a female reporter pressing Kirby on how we were going to defend Ukraine from posts in Germany and Poland. He kept saying it's important to have a show of force in the region for defense. She repeated: But how is having troops in Germany helping defend Ukraine? And he just kept coming back to the optics of force.
He basically said, "We're not going to fight. Ukraine is on their own." Which, to me, is the lesser of two evils. There's no winning a conflagration with Russia under this president with these generals with this administration showing they have no will to fight "but you better not, Putin."
I do feel sorry for the Ukrainian reformers, who were finally getting a foothold after years of oligarchic rule by thugs. But we have zero leverage now with Biden's energy policy. You can't give a competitor everything they want and then say, "You better not do X." The biggest tool we had against Putin was oil and natural gas, and we cut off our dick to spite our face on that count.

Just read a detailed report about the woman who is ill from the loose monkeys. She was driving behind the truck and when it crashed the monkeys crates fell out on the highway. She got out to help and bent down to look closely at a monkey in a crate . It hissed at her. She developed pink eye, and some viral symptoms. "Pinto" became a punchline so fast, we forget how popular they were right up until then. Ford partisans held forth for years about what a setup the case was (like the 60 Minutes Chev pickup case). They were sportily under-powered and so required being driven hard, didn't handle badly especially for the era, and formed the basis for an SCCA open-wheel class.

Never let it be said that the constant drumbeat of America is bad is ignored here and the gloom and doom isn't rampant.
I see nothing wrong with acknowledging the gravity of the current climate.
Wallowing in despair is inevitably going to result in a self fulfilling prophecy, however.
Fighting the problem is a part of our heritage, by doing so we continue the struggle of those who preceded us to ensure the survival of our Republic and that which made us so exceptional.
In short we CANNOT allow this to prevail. We've met and conquered issues even more serious in our history, with an unbroken string of success. Take a look back if you don't believe.

Okay, look; any American in the Ukraine now has known and has plenty of warning about possible conflict. And that American has had plenty of time to get out of country if he or she chooses. Those that have refused to leave so far have made their choices; why should taxpayers foot the bill to get them out later when the shooting starts?
