Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist EditionAmerican energy independence. Border security. American Standing on the world stage. And many, many more! One would think that after the debacle in Afghanistan, where we left Americans, allies, and more than $80 billion of military equipment, that the Biden junta would try something different. Like being just a little bit better than catastrophically, pathetically bad at...everything! What sort of contingency planning did they do...I mean besides working tirelessly to sculpt the media response and improve the administration's image? Clearly none. Biden Has No Plans For Using Military To Evacuate U.S. Citizens Out Of Ukraine If Russia Invades "If Americans are still in Ukraine, and things start happening with Russia, are they pretty much on their own?" a reporter asked. "Well, we are conveying very clearly now that now's the time to leave and that there are a means to do that," Psaki said. "Of course, there's commercial airlines, you can depart over land. There's obviously the embassy there to provide assistance. And this is very similar to what we did in Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, and many other countries over the course of the last several decades. But there is not an intention or a plan for any military evacuation." "We?" Who is "we?" And interestingly the psquawking pschlock merchant didn't mention the greatest foreign policy failure in generations.... has she and the Biden junta forgotten Afghanistan? Are they confident of their marvelous communications skills and are betting...hoping...that they can play some silly sleight-of-hand game with the American people? The answer is yes. They have such contempt for America and Americans that they are incapable of operating in any way other than craven political triangulation, damage control, and most of all the traditional Biden mindset of "What's in it for me?" But they suck at it. Just like they suck at everything else. We have elected (Hah!) the most shockingly incompetent administration possibly in history. Look at their track record. The policy changes they made were primarily executive orders; they were almost perfectly incapable of legislative changes. Hell...they couldn't even buy off Manchin and Synema and get their big, economy-killing infrastructure bill passed. How difficult is it to bribe a politician? Yet they couldn't even manage that because of their arrogance and inability to identify potential stumbling blocks; something that any competent executive understands is vital to success. I guess we are lucky that the flaccid-thinking apparatchiks who are pulling the drooling, nasty imbecile's strings aren't better at basic political machinations, but I imagine the Americans who may be caught in a war zone in Ukraine, or were (and possibly are) stuck in Afghanistan would much prefer some simple competence, even if it came with mean tweets. ++++ This was Trump's failing, too. He did a lot by EO and had a hard time getting legislation passed. In his case, it was because the Republicans hated him and wanted to keep the Uniparty gravy sluicing into their mouths. Biden is in a different situation, I think. His party doesn't hate him, but his party is at war with itself and all of the power players are radicals, which leaves the lower-level guys out in the cold. They have a problem with party unity. I read this and think about that NJ Biden voter who showed up at that mandate protest rally over the weekend. She's angry about what Biden has done, but she didn't express regret for voting for the guy. I shouldn't throw stones - it took me years to lose my respect for the GOPe after blindly following them for most of my adult life. That said, she and the other Biden voters have to admit regret before we can move on as a country. If my personal example is any indication, we could be in for a rough ride. Pearl Harbor and 9/11 were still pretty big govt screw ups/failures. Hindsight is 20/20, but neither event came completely out of the blue, there were warnings that something was up.
Posted by: sniffybigtoe The day before Pearl Harbor (Dec. 6, 1941), the War Department and the Navy Department sent out a War Warning. Vigorous commanders, like Adm Bill Halsey put the Enterprise carrier battle group on alert, and had his planes up flying CAP missions. Admiral Husband Kimmel, not as vigorous a commander, didn't take many measures based on this. I mean, it was Sunday morning. Biggest screw up I have seen in my life? The Viet Nam War. Much bigger and more costly than Afghanistan. And Ukraine could be much bigger. I think we lost something like 2,100 men in 20 years in A-stan. Caution Rant Ahead;
We've gotten a look at what contemporary women look like in government leadership positions- and it's not good. These women are intent on being nannies and running a Nanny State where it's "I know best, do what I say". I can't find a single example where that statement does not apply or they haven't yielded to the impulse. You want to be a mom? Stay home and raise your children instead of running around trying to make everyone else their stand-ins. You want to be in government, our government, yield to freedom and individual liberty. You want to argue this point with facts? Have at it. You want to substitute ad hominems and call me misogynistic? Go punch yourself in the throat. You actually think that we would send US troops into a country that's currently being invaded? This is actually something that I absolutely agree with Biden on, as rare as that is.
Americans in Ukraine: the country is about to be invaded by Russia. If you want out, leave now. If you don't leave, you're on your own, if for no other reason than we really don't want to send US troops into an active war zone that we're not involved in for reasons that really should be obvious. You want your troops to get accidentally bombed or attacked? Because sending random troops into an active war zone is a really good way to get your guys killed and get involved in a war that you don't want to get involved in. If you have never read it, a good read (by all means, not totally inclusive) is "Guests of the Ayatollah", by Mark Bowden. Easiest way is to persuade that friend that the authorities are lying to them and the conspiracy includes the media. Generally speaking, people are more likely to blame others than themselves for bad outcomes. Depressives are the exception. Want to learn how to move masses, then study rhetoric--people have not changed very much since the ancient Greek and Roman times. Technology has changed but it has been adapted to do the same old problems in rhetoric and dialectic confronting the Greeks. Posted by: whig at January 25, 2022 11:24 AM (Iq9dF) whig, this makes a lot of sense. I was struck by a report on NPR years ago about the campaign to get young people to stop smoking. Yeah the bids are insane this year. I think its a combination of a few things, such as no auctions last year (so people saved up), the desirability of cars going through the roof as new cars are so computerized, controlled, and clinical to drive, and at least some of it is people have spent the previous year watching shows about cars and just have gone nuts wanting them.

Darrell, a Biden voter (!) admitting regret might be nice I guess, but the ignorance, misinformation, laziness, stupidity, bigotry, or extravagant delusion (mix/match) required to vote that way ..... are not things that "regret" will change, or fix.
There are actually important pivot points or road-forkings in history - we just had one. "Fixing" it is largely not possible. Opportunity costs. As bizarrely improbable as it seems, Donald Trump as president was likely a key opportunity. That's squandered, and another such opportunity is more than uncertain, at least for an indefinite period of further degradation and damage. You avoid/lessen the emotional response by the fallback of simply asking questions about the world. That makes the person dig up the evidence themselves to 'prove they are correct' but often leads to evidence that they are wrong via the presentation of discordant information. This method works poorly with relatively unintelligent people because they cannot be bothered to do the analysis. Also, this technique does not work with ideologues but those are relatively few percentage wise of a population--roughly 10-15 percent of the population. Ideologues already have firm axioms on how the world operates and cause and effect. Thus, they tend to rationalize discordant information as either false or not relevant. It was like a year later that Russia tried to invade Greece and we sent tanks and soldiers and planes to help defend Greece, which made the Soviets back off. I agree that nobody wanted to go to war again, but Russia was basically broke, out of ammunition and arms, and most of its fighting men were dead. You think WE were war weary? They had nothing left. We could have pushed them back. The problem is that we were allegedly allies with the USSR, and pointing guns at them immediately at the end of the war would have looked really awful. By that point the lefty idiots were in charge of France, England, etc. They would have seen the US as some kind of conquering invasion force for a new Empire and freaked out.
Posted by: rhomboid There are examples in history where rejuvenation is possible. For example, things got pretty bad in Merrie Old England under the last part of King John's reign. After his death, due to more or less being forced by circumstances, Henry III made peace with a fairly rapid recovery of the state. Same with several iterations of Byzantium, and so on. Both linearity and circularity are examples of regime change in history. Posted by: whig at January 25, 2022 11:42 AM (Iq9dF) 237

Times of inflation and market insecurity leads to hedging activity by people that have lower risk tolerance for more abstract times. Maybe Putin doesn't want Ukraine in Chinese hands. Don't blame him.
-- If the Ukraine is for sale. China's a buyer. If the Ukraine is disappointed in Biden as a sugar daddy, then Ukraine could cozy up to China. Having China to your eastern border and with a chinese vassal state hosting bases and armies to their west, it probably on the list of things that Russia can't tolerate. I saw a snippet of a female reporter pressing Kirby on how we were going to defend Ukraine from posts in Germany and Poland. He kept saying it's important to have a show of force in the region for defense. She repeated: But how is having troops in Germany helping defend Ukraine? And he just kept coming back to the optics of force.
He basically said, "We're not going to fight. Ukraine is on their own." Which, to me, is the lesser of two evils. There's no winning a conflagration with Russia under this president with these generals with this administration showing they have no will to fight "but you better not, Putin." I do feel sorry for the Ukrainian reformers, who were finally getting a foothold after years of oligarchic rule by thugs. But we have zero leverage now with Biden's energy policy. You can't give a competitor everything they want and then say, "You better not do X." She ended up at Geisinger medical center where she was placed on antivirals and given a rabies vaccine as monkeys carry a host of viruses along with rabies. Its why they are required to spend time in a quarantine facility before being sent to a lab. They came from Mauritius and typically cost $10,000 each.

Posted by: Anti doesn't matter at January 25, 2022 12:03 PM (sUMfc) Rhomboid is an expert in foreign relations and defense policy and probably has held security clearances that go far beyond top secret. I disagree with him at times but mainly on general issues on history, law, or perhaps politics, rather than specific sets of facts in those areas as he has a much better command of them than do I. So, when he is issuing his opinions on foreign relations and defense, he is speaking from his deep well of extensive knowledge and experience. So mere opinion does not quite make the grade if you care to debate him. Posted by: whig at January 25, 2022 12:15 PM (Iq9dF) 383

I'm convinced the appeal of "collector" cars is rooted in aesthetics. Certainly not engineering on today's scale.
Most new vehicles have all the appeal of a tree stump, they're just an efficient transportation module that looks like every other module. A period Ford, Chevy or Mopar exudes and honest, simple charm of an era gone by that in today's environment is sorely missed. Posted by: irongrampa at January 25, 2022 12:17 PM (KATBx) 397

Another reason why the right fails. "Pinto" became a punchline so fast, we forget how popular they were right up until then. Ford partisans held forth for years about what a setup the case was (like the 60 Minutes Chev pickup case). They were sportily under-powered and so required being driven hard, didn't handle badly especially for the era, and formed the basis for an SCCA open-wheel class.

Never let it be said that the constant drumbeat of America is bad is ignored here and the gloom and doom isn't rampant.
I see nothing wrong with acknowledging the gravity of the current climate. Wallowing in despair is inevitably going to result in a self fulfilling prophecy, however. Fighting the problem is a part of our heritage, by doing so we continue the struggle of those who preceded us to ensure the survival of our Republic and that which made us so exceptional. In short we CANNOT allow this to prevail. We've met and conquered issues even more serious in our history, with an unbroken string of success. Take a look back if you don't believe. So rip my ass if you disagree. Posted by: irongrampa at January 25, 2022 01:00 PM (KATBx) 416
Okay, look; any American in the Ukraine now has known and has plenty of warning about possible conflict. And that American has had plenty of time to get out of country if he or she chooses. Those that have refused to leave so far have made their choices; why should taxpayers foot the bill to get them out later when the shooting starts?
