Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Welp, your ol' pal Weasel is in the depths of hell, work-wise, so I haven't been able to even think about shooting (not really), much less do any shooting (really). At some point I'm going to need to get down to the farm so I at least don't forget where it is. Hopefully things will lighten up after January and I can skedoodle on down there. In the meantime, Gun Thread must go on!

Note: I'm a little behind on my email correspondence, so please forgive me if I haven't responded to something you've sent!

Halp!

more terrible pic

Because WeaselCares, I picked up a photography light box to improve my pictures here on the ol' GT, but instead, it seems to have made things no bueno. I'm using a reasonably decent small Canon digital camera which I know takes good pictures, but as you can see, the results in the light box suck. I have tried turning the LED lights up and down (inside the box) but something ain't right.

Any of you photography people out there have any suggestions on making these not look like shit? I suspect I need to do something camera-setting-wise.

Our pal blake has been to the gun store and the range!

Well, I lasted all of 31 days, couldn't take it any longer, and headed to the nearest gun shop here in AZ to see what they had to offer. I was in luck, they had guns galore in stock! In fact, they had guns on the wall that would have put the owners in jail for a long while, had they been on display in CA! Yeah, plenty of short barrel carbines, evil black rifles with the shoulder thingy that goes up, detachable magazines capable of firing a zillion bullets per trigger pull, etc. The shop was everything CA politicians have nightmares about.
I'd had a hankering for a 1911 style pistol chambered for 9 mm, but, a bit shorter barrel than my Kimber. As luck would have it the store had a dandy 1911 with a 4.25" barrel built by a company out of Turkey, Girsan, which is considered a "budget friendly" firearm.
I asked if the store would accept a trade, specifically, a Lee Enfield, Mark IV. (before anyone has a conniption, the Lee-Enfield was a jamomatic for me. No matter what I tried, rim jams were a constant problem.)
In the end, the trade covered most of the cost of the new pistol, but, I added a few bucks to the final purchase price buying a spare magazine, some practice ammo and some defensive ammo.
Gun purchase note: I did fill out the 4473, but, no background check. AZ CCW permit, baby!

I have to admit, after putting up with the gun buying nonsense of CA these last couple of decades, it was nice to walk in, look at a gun, say, "I'll take it" and walk out an hour later. (it took a while to get the appraisal done on the Mark IV)
So, my new purchase and I headed to the local range, to see if the gun would go Bang! when I pulled the trigger. I got to the range, took the gun apart, wiped it down and oiled it with some Otis CLP, put it back together, and proceeded to run some ammo through it. And, by golly, the gun shoots quite well. (sorry, no target pics, but, it appears the gun shoots pretty much dead center, though a bit low. How much was the gun and how much was me, no idea.) I'd add, reassembly after take down was a bit of a headache. Getting the slide lock to engage the barrel link pin was a bit tricky.
I had two hiccups, both with the factory original magazine. On the last round, the gun stove-piped, twice. However, this wasn't an issue with the non factory mag. I would also mention the magazines I have for the gun are functional, and that it. The lack of basepad makes magazine insertion problematic. No worries, though, because I ordered some stainless magazines for the gun from Sig.
After shooting some paper, I moved down to the steel portion of the range and, sitting casually on the tailgate of my truck, put a few rounds downrange at some plates and the plate rack, I'll be darned if I didn't connect and, I estimate I was shooting roughly 20 yards at the time.
After that, it was time to get out my full size Kimber, and see how I did with it. I'm pleased to report I scored, at 18 yards, paced it off, on 7 of the first 8 shots shooting steel, Made my day, it did.
I ran a few mags through the Kimber, called it a day and headed home.
I'd like to also note the Girsan comes with a standard 3 dot setup, which I plan to get rid of. I'll switch it out to a fiber front sight and standard black rear sight. My thinking is: Handguns are all about the front sight. Lining up 3 dots for targets, great. Lining up three dots for defensive purposes, not so great.
So far, I like the Girsan, but, I've only run 50 rounds through it. Fit and finish are okay, price is good, to soon to make a call about reliability.

Went out with SiD to our local range to burn some powder on what is becoming our Friday date night.
She shot well indeed, but she can render her own range report....
I took my Ruger 10/22, which I had not shot in a while. This was fairly close range like 30 feet. I just wanted to sight it in. The target is 50 rounds of Norma Tac 22, and I never shoot this well. I shot 1 box and quit for the day. I have 2 magazines, so one group is 20 rounds, ( 2 x 10) and the other was 30. All fliers are on me. I had brought this to the MOME in case someone wanted to shoot it, but had no takers. It was another great day at the range.

Nice shooting, amigo! Is there really ever a bad day at the range?

Next up our pal JerseyDevilRider needs some help with a rifle identification and sourcing a part.

I need some help. I ended up acquiring a .22. Can't tell the the brand. I took it to the range with the old ammo. Jammed about 20% of the time. Tried new ammo and ended up less than 10% jams. So I stripped it down. The guy it came from never did and he had it for years. Just for varmits. I probably fired it more in a day than he did the whole time. Anyway, I bent the firing pin spring on reassembly. I could blame the old spring but I must share in the credit. I ordered a set from KIDD but none of them fit. Can you recommend a place and help me figure out the model and size of the spring? I attached some pictures, including one that show the dirt from one pass on the bolt/chamber.

So how about it? Anyone recognize the make and model? How about a supplier for the firing pin? I recommended Gun Parts/Numerich, but figure there must be some other sources out there.

From time to time I get it into my head that I really need an antique flintlock. So far, I have managed to resist the urge, but it's probably only a matter of time.

Magazine Loaders
Loading magazines has never been something that bothered me much. I suppose I always figured loading was part of shooting. I do know it's something a lot of shooters don't particularly like to do, and that's why we have the speed loader. Here's one for the AR-15 platform from RSS Speed Loaders

So how about it? Do you load magazines before you head to the range or after you get there? What's your opinion on this product; great idea or just another thing to take up space?

Stabby Things

Here's a fun little bear fighter, an original Blackjack A.W.A.C. knife. A.W.A.C. stands for All Weather All Conditions, and it's one hell of a solid unit. A bought this example many years ago, and it's still unused in the box. Something happened to the Blackjack Knife Co., and this model is no longer produced, but there are still knives being produced under the Blackjack name. Warning! More lousy photos!

I get the sense the original maker is no longer involved and the line was purchased by someone else. Anyone know what the story is with the company?

9 Weasel, you probably don't want light coming from underneath your photographic subject.

Try positioning two light sources at 45 degrees vertically, one on each side. You may want to use some diffusion on them.

10 I'm gonna say that the light box problem is diffused, directionless light ... if you want to bring up surface detail & such, you need directed, point-source light which can be adjusted for position and angle until you have both nice contrasty surface detail and a lack of reflected hot-spots.

20 Sent the compact 1911 a1 back for repairs. Along with last round failure to eject, the firing pin stop plate started coming out allowing the firing pin to drop onto the table.

Cant wait to get it back and try again.

21 Regarding knives, and All Weather All Condition, there is a modern alloy, LC200N, that is claimed to be utterly impervious to rust by definition. I got Mrs Splunge a Spyderco in that alloy, and it is holding up perfectly, but we do live in a desert.

23 Hello, Weasel and horde! Weasel, for gun pictures, I try using natural sunlight as much as possible. Partly sunny days seem to work best for me, but a lot depends on how sunlight comes through your windows or onto your preferred photographic spot.
I forgot who was asking about .303 British ammo last week and a couple of weeks ago, but SG Ammo has Prvi Partisan .303 ammo in stock in both bulk (200 rounds) and individual boxes (20 rounds, I think) as of this afternoon.

24 Photographing dark objects against a light background is always difficult. Can take quite a bit of aperture/exposure fiddling.

27 Weasel, I got some decent photos of leatherwork I used to do using a plastic tub on its side. Light through it is diffused and even. These days I'm sure there are more options given the cam industry.

I think diffusion is part of the problem, but I guess try diffusers over the spot lights it if direct lighting is too harsh.

32 Get that flintlock! I got a T/C Hawken .50 cal back in 1978 and have had a lot of fun with it. Pennsylvania has had a flintlock-only deer season since the '70s so the rifle has seen some practical use.

41 Is the light box one of those that is lit from below? Usually those are only used for transparencies and slides, things like that.

The main issue with the photos is the light is too flat. Needs to be put to one side or another to bring out the detail.

44 Shot the Henry .357 16" barrel lever gun last week. The action is slicker than snot but it shot ~4-5 inches low out of the box. Had to move the rear sight up 3 notches to get it close to the bullseye. 5 shot groups at 25 yards are about the size of my thumbnail, and that's with buckhorn sights and 65 year old eyes.

At first I thought it was me so I had the gun range guy take a few shots with it and he was shooting to the same POI. Got the rifle rest out and locked it in and started shooting. That's when we had to move the rear sight up 3 notches to get it close.

Bought a skinner sight and put it on yesterday and am taking it out again tomorrow to see what I can do. Got a feeling that I am shooting .38 Special +P in it instead of .357 magnum and that may be making a difference. Can't find .357 magnum anywhere near me.

47 There are a several flintlock kits out there. The cheapest is probably Traditions. Some give them a bad rap because they are inexpensive and not overly fancy. I have several and they have all been fine shooters. Years ago CVA sidelocks got the same crap but their barrels were excellent. Kibler (not the elves) has a great reputation.

Kits can be anything from basically screw it together to function with most of the inletting already done, to a barrel, a lock, brass fixtures, and a chunck of good wood. The last type requires tools and knowledge to make even though the parts are top notch.

A cheap alternative might be to find an old used CVA or Traditions flintlock and get a drop in replacement lock for it. (Check for availability.)

49 The gun buyer sniffing dog caught me unawares last week. PSA had a daily deal for a Taurus GX4 for $299! Played with one at a gun show last month but they wanted list price at $450. Felt good in the hand and good trigger, but didn't need it in the collection for that price. Snagged it for $299 though! Damn you PSA......

50 Outdoor lighting will be a narrow yellow source and a broad bluish source. Get two lights with different directions, sizes, intensities and temperatures (2700F and 5000F bulbs for example).

53 Image advice: Backlighting bad. Key directional light from one side, maybe a small fill or bounce card from the other. You want to pick up the texture and detail. I would lose the lightbox.

58 @48 It may be that the light is too evenly distributed. It seems to be coming from all directions, and it kind of cancels itself out in terms of showing details.

I know what you mean. I probably think about it twice a day or so.

I remember one time I met a friend of mine at a Cabela's in PA. She came in, saw a Sig that she wanted to check out. Salesman took it out let her handle it. Afterwards she gave it back to him and said "I'll take it". Half hour later she was walking out the door with it.

62 No range trip this week and actually a good thing because the weather is pretty nasty.
I finally got to shoot the brand new Rossi Gallery gun last weekend. Only got to it at the very end of our session so maybe put 30 rounds through it.
Came and put it away. Took it out yesterday to take a look and the screws on the formed were a little loose again. Is there something I can use to keep this from happening?

64 Weasel, the lighting cure is called a "snoot". Tube which covers the front of the flash head, directing light to the subject on a more focused basis than the diffuse light of the lightbox.

You can make your own, just line a toilet paper tube with white printer paper, trimmed. Then a bit of blue tape (so as not to mar the flash unit), affix the tube and make sure it's properly oriented. You'll either need a wireless trigger, *or* a light-activated trigger, which will fire in sympathy with your lightbox's strobes. Keep using the lightbox, but this'll put contrasty illumination on the subject and it's rollmarks or engraving. Experiment with distance and angle, and you'll soon find a solution. Oh, and this isn't a job for a Monster Strobe. Go small and go (relatively) weak. Won't take a blinding flash of the sun to get it done.

70 possibly heresy, but I'm gonna say that my favorite 1911's are all stock Colt or clone, built to GI tolerances - never accurized or modded in any way. well, okay, the Combat Commander has aftermarket sights installed, back in the day I had the front sight fall off from firing ... Milletts were all the stuff back in the 80's, and more importantly they had huge posts for staking in place.

78 Bought a skinner sight and put it on yesterday and am taking it out again tomorrow to see what I can do. Got a feeling that I am shooting .38 Special +P in it instead of .357 magnum and that may be making a difference. Can't find .357 magnum anywhere near me.

If you are shooting .38 Special +P instead of .357 magnum, that is a big difference in velocity and so at a given bullet weight, it will affect your POI significantly. In addition, magnums use slower powder than the pistol powder in a .38 Special so they gain more velocity over barrel length that any regular .38 SPC load would.

My guess is that the sights were regulated from the factory for .357 magnum with a 158 gr. semi wadcutter or round nose bullet.

I've done OK with just a workbench light, and flash.

Weasel featured my Colt King Cobra snub on an early gub thread. Not knowing what I'm doing, and with no special gear, I did OK. I actually lernt myself up on photography waaay back, but that interest atrophied and dain bramage seems to have fogged my grasp of the basics. Like much else, would need a thorough review to get serious at it again.

80 Weasel's links to muzzleloading videos are good. Probably the best I've found on YT are by Mike Beliveau. His YT channel is under 'duelist1954'. He covers all levels of assembly, shooting, and maintaining for black powder guns.

On YT, the Townsends channel has an episode 'Flintlock Rifle Breakdown and Cleaning'. The reenactor shows how a flintlock would be completely cleaned and maintained on the frontier. It is excellent.

I've probably mentioned this before but the best video I know of for building a flintlock from scratch, circa 1760s, is 'Colonial Gunsmith' on YT. It's about an hour long but is fascinating. It was made in the 1960s for Colonial Williamsburg. If the narrator's voice sounds familiar (and if you are old enough) it is David Brinkley. I had it on VHS tape, which I wore out, now I have the DVD. But the YT copy is free.

84 Addendum. I see descriptions of two kinds of lightboxes here. Primarily, folks are referencing the "slide-illumination" type, which shines light through a white plastic slab, so you can clearly see 35mm slides (or X rays in a larger scale), when laid atop.

Otherwise, a "lightbox" is a semi-closed fixture, circular or box shaped, either wholly made from diffuser material (such as white fabric) that the lights shine through to create a shadowless area, or a white-reflective interior rigid structure, with penetrations for lighting sources from various angles. Both will result in flat, featureless images. You need a "keylight"/"sidelight" arrangement, with about 20% diffuse light as the weakest lighting source, just to even out demarkations between light and dark, highlight and shadow.

This is where my actual schooling in school "focused". Three years of Occupational Photography, back in Ye Olde Filme Era.

I got outside today to shoot my first ever reloads. 15 rounds of 45ACP through my 1911. I didn't blow up the gun, blow off my hand or face, every round went boom, and every round cycled through the gun correctly. Calling that a win.

Many thanks to Hogmartin, who emailed me this week that Brownells had primers for 45ACP. I instantly bought a pack of 1,000. I believe their stock lasted less than an hour.

Most screw heads are a bit soft nowadays on modern firearms so if you do use threadlocking compound, apply lightly and do not use anything that requires heat for removal.

If the screw is used to dismount the action for cleaning, I would suggest something like a dab of grease on the threads instead or a bit of clear nail polish (after cleaning the screw thread of course). On a gallery rifle, you shouldn't need much to keep the screw from backing out.

98 sock_rat_eez, I too am a very boring gun nut. No mods or even additions to anything I own, everything "stock" (including the near-century old Russian rifles).

I've been waiting for the 1911 trigger to smooth up through use, always preferring the "shoot more!" approach to gun issues. It's not great, and pretty funny next to the serious competition 1911 triggers I've tried on guns other guys have at matches. But I still prefer to modify, or fix, the shooter, vs. the gun.

Sock, my favorite gun is a Colt LW Commander that my dad gave me as a commissioning present nearly 50 years ago. Always shot well with the factory sights, but a few years ago I replaced them with Trijicons as a concession to age. Still my favorite iron. Sentimental favorite as well.

106 The issue with the photos seems to be the auto-metering.

Ideally you'd want to expose for the gun - not the background. This means the background paper should photograph as pure white (or close to it) in your final images. However, since the camera sensor is "dumb" (and doesn't know what the primary subject is in your frame), it sees the white background as being too bright and then stops down the aperture or speeds up the shutter to compensate. There are spot-metering options to avoid this, but that gets into some advanced controls.

Try to use the camera's MANUAL settings and override the auto-settings. This means you may need to overexpose the image (only based on the camera's metering), but the gun should come out looking sexy, while the backgrounds is closer to a pure white.

Use the inverse focal-length rule to avoid blurred images... if using a 50mm lens, stay about 1/50 shutter speed. If using a 100mm lens, stay about 1/100, etc. etc. And play with your aperture to get that exposure up... don't be afraid to open it up to f/5.6, f/4, f/2.8, or more!

Remember - it's digital. You can always delete the pictures you don't like.

That is the great thing about digital. You see the image immediately and make the necessary adjustments. Film was shoot and then wait until the film gets developed and then notice it was out of focus, to dark, to bright or anything else that makes a crappy picture.

142 Weasel! Horde! I may be drooling over all the 1911s...

Had date night at the range Friday after several weeks of no shooting. I had been in an all day meeting so I was ready to shoot. I put about 50 rounds through my P365. I'm slowly improving, all but 1 shot on paper this time. I noticed when I switched from my 10 rd mag to the 12 rd that I started missing high instead of low. I got a couple shots in the center circle, I'm proud of that.

I also shot the .22 S&W revolver, both single action and double action. I'm a bit all over the place shooting it double action, but can get a pretty nice grouping single action.

Finally I shot 12 rounds with Jesse's S&W model 28 "Highway Patrolman" (appropriate because there were some LEOs practicing while we were there). It's incredibly accurate even in my grubby hands and fun, fun, fun to shoot. Not to mention really pretty...

147 Muad'dib - maple syrup question.

Back when I first discovered real maple syrup, probably the late 80s, in New England and Quebec, I learned quickly that I preferred Grade B, for the depth of flavor. It was not always easy to find, even back then.

But now it's been years since I've seen Grade B in a store (CA, but I used to see it at Trader Joe's and other places, was always my choice).

Has the nomenclature changed, or all the B goes to industry now, or something else? Should I still be able to find B?

I'm now in Month 6 of my quest to obtain a CCW in gun-friendly CA. I've stalled at Step One, which is getting my carry gun registered with the state.

As abominable as it is to notify CA that I own a gun, the gun that you're licensed to carry must be registered. So okay, here's my application and my $19.

So far as I can tell, despite the passage of six long months all the state apparatchiks have managed to do is cash my check. Otherwise, nothing.

Yes, the issue is that you're taking a picture of a very dark object with a very bright background.

Shooting black-finished firearms is tricky because you want to bring out the detail but also too much and you get glare.

If you remember my PA-63 "mystery pistol" (sadly now lost in a swift-running stream), I had to do two different shots with different lighting - one to highlight the the slide stamps and one to give the full scope of the thing.

And yes, take lots of exposures in different ways. Digital photography is great for tinkering around until you get it right. A colleague of mine did sports photography - actual in-game stuff - and they basically shot every way they could, constantly changing the settings to get that one perfect image for the front page.

162 Quick photo answer: You've got too much contrast, put the 1911 on a darker (but not black) background, that will help the camera brighten up the gun.

Photographing dark thinks (like black cats) is hard, cameras like to flatten all the dark shades. You can try adding some direct spot-lights to try to get some light to bounce and show off the curves, but you'll often have to go to manual exposure settings to keep the auto-exposure from getting confused.

You might find Reloading for Handgunners 2nd Edition by Patrick Sweeney good for introducing different cartridges and problems in reloading. His Big Book of the 45 is also very good for that caliber and worth seeking out if not still in print.

Another tip, see if you can buy some small pistol primer 45 ACP cases. 45 ACP brass is normally large pistol primer but the creation of non-lead styphnate primers for police/etc required only small pistol primers size. Most of these will be Speer or Federal headstamped cases and it allows you to reload either small or large pistol primers as you have supply. Just make sure to segregate the cases.

OK, maybe not that bad. But even after many rounds of "sorting" out the small primer brass (that I pick up, haven't shot any small primer 45 in years), I *still* get some in my main brass supply. Now forced to quickly eyeball every headstamp before it goes into the shellholder.

My time-study shows this adds 3 total minutes to the time required to load 50 rounds.

Sure, but Smiths were produced in even greater numbers on the civilian/police side.

But Smith can't tell you when your pistol was born and who bought it. Colt can. Not long ago I saw a Colt Commander in 9mm Steyr go for an obscene amount of money (north of 2 grand) because it was near-mint, and the sale included the Colt factory authentication.

191 Simplest thing would probably be a dark background to flatten out the contrast curve across the image. Otherwise, post processing should be able to pull out the details if you're handy with contrast/brightness/dynamic rang controls.

It's a big deal. I mean if you buy a Police Positive from a pawn shop, you may have an actual service pistol and can look up what department it was sold to.

That's huge for people into that sort of thing. Serial number range only gets you so far.

228 184 whig I think the creation of small primer 45ACP brass is a crime against humanity that should be subject to an international tribunal.

OK, maybe not that bad. But even after many rounds of "sorting" out the small primer brass (that I pick up, haven't shot any small primer 45 in years), I *still* get some in my main brass supply. Now forced to quickly eyeball every headstamp before it goes into the shellholder.

My time-study shows this adds 3 total minutes to the time required to load 50 rounds.

FWIW, .357 Magnum brass used to require large pistol primers, and now does not.

The non-lead primers have more brisance than lead styphnate primers do and thus require a smaller size to avoid spiking pressures and powders used in 45 ACP are happy with small or large pistol primers.

The ammo with non-lead primers usually are sold to law enforcement as practice ammo.

IMHO Privi Partisan is probably the best .303 to be found. It shoots like the old cordite rounds, and is very pleasant and accurate.

274 While your 'terrible pic!' is underexposed it is often possible to rescue such photos in a photo editor that has a 'levels adjustment' command. (Photoshop,GIMP,etc)
The levels command will show a histogram of all the pixels in the photo. In your pic you will see two distinct blobs: the left group is a bunch of dark grey pixels making up the gun, while on the right is another group that is the light grey pixels making up the background.
Below this are three(3) sliders that represent: Black(Left), Grey(Middle) and White(Right). Move the right slider to the left under the blob for your background - this will turn the background white. Move the middle slider to the left towards the other blob this will lighten the gun image - if you move too far then while it gets lighter it will also look washed out.
When you experiment with exposure your goal should be to get that blob that represents your gun to be wider and more in the middle of the histogram. Many cameras have an option to show you this histogram.
Google 'levels' for a better online explanation of this.

At some point, lead styphnate primers are probably going to be banned. Fiocchi used to sell lead free primers to reloaders but I haven't seen any on the shelves in awhile. Right now, Ft. Smith brand primers (probably imported) via Fedarms is selling lead free, berdan, and boxer primers but only in 5000k lots. See Fedarm dot com and look for primers.

295 Range time was IDPA yesterday. Did ok, had some procedural calls, one of which pissed me off because it was issued because I loaded 10 rounds...which was supposed to be division capacity. Oh no, nonono....you are supposed to load 11 rounds in your first magazine. Fucking years going to these matches and this is the FIRST time someone mentioned this fucking rule. But I digress....

Did ok, didn't miss any targets, didn't hit an hostages. Wasn't the fastest or the slowest.

Used my Springfield Armory XD9. It may not be the 'one handgun I'd keep' but it might just be my favorite. And I shoot it pretty well. Even with sun in my eyes.

Yep! I am confident enough these days to charge cases in batches of fifty, especially straight wall cases. I still do a check on the powder level with a flashlight but that just takes a few seconds.

One way to avoid a double charge is to seat the bullet right after charging the case. Which I often do. I am never in a hurry while reloading and don't use a progressive press, so taking a little extra time makes for added safety. After loading tens of thousands of rounds I've never had a double charge or squib load with that process.

Black powder reloading is easy as you load to case capacity then seat the bullet. Keep some smokeless Trail Boss on hand for old firearms that is much the same way.

I generally reload handguns with a turret press but have an RCBS powder checker die installed (I don't prime or size on press). Rifles, I generally find more accurate loads to occupy most of the capacity of the case.

Was at the range this afternoon, picking up my tempo for combat shooting. Slow fire is reliable enough, but firing off 4 rounds in 3 seconds from low ready, my fundamentals fray. Need more practice BEFORE I go to the range. Especially in locking in the upper body and with fire control. Funny how a person "fails" at a higher and higher level, repeating many of the same "faults." Oh well, at least I know them like old friends.

I've learned that 30 minutes can be a real work-out for these kinds of drills. Wears out an old guy. Also cuts down on my range bills. ;-)

321 Visual check on powder level in every single round seems to me fundamental in reloading. But I live in the turret press world (configured as single-stage for 30-06 loading), so there may be other verities (and equipment) for the progressive press users (I think there are).

Good lighting is very helpful, for lots of reasons. There are set-ups with LED lights right inside the press itself, but I find a movable bright bench light works fine.

One overcharge-proofing step for beginners, at least with revolver rounds, would be use of Trail Boss powder. Ain't no double charges with that.

RCBS has a powder checker die that is manually set and observed that works pretty well. Both RCBS and Hornady among others have powder cop dies for progressives that actually lock the press if either no powder or overcharge situations exist.

USNtakim, we've been using a medium sized propane Mr Heater in my friend's garage. Works better than I would have thought. Though he has no cars in the space and that helps.

345 Yep whig I'd heard tell of such things over the years, but for me it's always an instant direct visual check on powder level, before bullet is seated. After a few rounds you get to know what the proper level looks like (some small variation between brass headstamps due to thickness variation, but easy to factor that it).

For years I weighed the charge every 10th round, anyway, as well as a random 2 or 3 others, in a 50-round run. After getting the Lee Auto-Drum, I found it so consistent and reliable that now I only randomly weigh 3 or 4 rounds per 50. Of course all are visually checked, any apparent anomalies = weighing charge.

30-06 totally different, single stage process, with 4064 I was throwing 50 charges then checking/correcting about every 4th or 5th one, all visually checked of course. With TAC, it may be a bit easier, stuff meters like sand, so, very consistent powder throws likely. We'll see.

372 Lighting from light boxes tends to be very diffused. Whenever I photograph items in a lightbox like this, unless it has a lot of reflective surfaces, I use a use a light ring attached to my camera lens which provides a little bit of directional light to help bring up surface detail. The other thing to do is to make sure you are shooting in RAW format not JPEG that way you can properly edit the photo in programs like lightroom and photoshop which will give you a lot more tools and options to bring the detail in an item out, even if the lighting in an image is a bit average.

Plan A: crank up the light in your light box to max; increase f-stop on camera to 9 or 11; adjust the ISO setting to get a good exposure of the weapon---rather than the light surface of the background---start at 100 and systematically work your way up, as needed; if you can shrink the walls of the light box so that they are closer to the subject, do it; examine your results; if they're good, you win; if not, on to plan B.
Plan B: Make your own light box; You can use the sun or a 5500 K LED light source; Get a piece or two of white foam core from a crafting store or, possibly, Wal-Mart; construct a three sided structure, and place it on top of another piece of white foam core (think three walls and a floor); place the light where the fourth wall should be; place weapon in "the room"; repeat photo procedure from. Plan A; how'd you do?; still not good? Grrrrrrr....; Plan C...

382 Just my 2 cents worth on the photo question. Dark objects on light backgrounds can be tricky. I'd put the guns on something like a grey T-shirt or maybe something like blue jeans or a mid toned towel. As someone else noted earlier, the bright white of the background can confuse the metering/exposure of the camera. Most cameras have an auto exposure lock (AEL). If your camera has a spot metering mode, I'd do a spot meter on the gun itself, lock the exposure with the AEL button, then frame up the shot. Also, putting the light at an angle will help. Straight on light reduces any shadows that may result from surface detail, making the picture look flat and uninteresting.

383 I quickly scanned the comments, and I see a lot of talk about light. Let me add my two cents.

Photographing matte black objects is difficult - for a good image, you are not photographing the item, but the shadows. You need a directional light. Bright stand light adjust angle and brightness and play around.
Meter on the gun (I almost always use center spot metering as a starting point - the automatic crap is great 95% of the time but the other 5% it really sucks.)

Also, rub the gun with kriol (the oil that creeps!) to get some highlights and not that seafoam crap.

It looks like the best oils can give a 10% decrease in required torque (but the number of samples was low, and the deviation high, so even that is probably bull.)

My father taught me that I can get 20% increase in torque on the wrench just by proper use of curse words.
