Hi Horde. Friday night meme time. Before we get to that, I want to share this:

The painting is called Union Bank Robbery by Earl Norem. I like it, and I'm impressed how well the cops are doing with just their revolvers. They are wayyyy outgunned.

And I doubt that low-level hoods would have had Tommy guns in the '50's or '60's.

73 Stalin's just pissed that Hitler beat him to the punch by 2 weeks. I've recently been convinced by reading several books by Viktor Suvorov that the reason the Germans were able to surround and capture 5 million Russians in the first couple of months of Barbarossa and destroy the Soviet air force on the ground in the first few days was because Stalin was going to invade Europe on July 5, 1941. Well, that and meth, MG42 and 88 Flak.

Fortunately, Hitler was quicker. Otherwise, all of Europe might have fallen to the Commies in 1941-42.

Stalin suffered a nervous breakdown for several days after the invasion. During that period, a delegation from the Politburo went to his place, and Stalin apparently thought that they were there to arrest him.

He pulled himself together, and on July 3rd delivered the "Brothers and Sisters" speech nationwide on the radio, calling on the Soviet people to resist the Germans.

Fortunately, Hitler was quicker. Otherwise, all of Europe might have fallen to the Commies in 1941-42.
Posted by: Sharkman at January 14, 2022 10:20 PM (8gxrg)

Sorry, don't buy it. Suvarov is better writing about himself and his history in the army and spy services.

The Russians were in the middle of a number of restructurings trying to recover from the purges and learn the lessons of the Finland debacle. Most of their army was deployed near Romania and the Ukraine after gobbling up Bessarabia rather than in the few places where an offensive against Germany would make sense. In a few years, maybe, sure. But not in 1941, and in fact Stalin was desperate not to give the Germans an excuse to start a war, hence part of the reason for the debacle.

Likely German victory, had there been infighting at the highest levels of the Soviet government as the invasion proceeded.

Stalin was responsive for eviscerating the Soviet high command in the 1938 purges, but once the war started, he wasn't a bad war leader. He had the sense to leave military strategy to his generals, unlike Hitler.

Well, yes and no. Stalin had a tight grip at first until the generals showed they could be trusted and could be competent. Then he gave them more space to work in.

Hitler was pretty free early on and the German Generals did plenty of screwups before he started to put the clamps down. Sometimes he was right to do so, sometimes not, but of course he didn't get to write a book after the war blaming his idiot generals.

I don't buy it either. Vox Day was banging away on that theory all he could a few months ago (give you three guesses why); but based on the reports of the German Foreign Service around the time Barbarossa opened, not to mention front-line units in the Wehrmacht itself, the Soviets intended and hoped for the '39 Pact to endure through at least the next year or two. And let's not forget that Stalin went after those in his own government and spy agencies warning him about Barbarossa in advance.

Eh. I'm not well versed in Nazi drug use and all that, but I think it's more that Hitler had fallen for his own propaganda. And to be fair, it's hard to blame him: he had beaten and conquered France in six weeks flat, and no one who had been on the Western Front in WWI expected that to happen. And he was actively involved in the planning of the campaign, overriding his generals on a lot of particular points and getting away with it. I pointed out to some of my students once that after 1940, less egotistical heads than his would have been turned by all this success. Given Hitler's beliefs and how things stood in June 1941, I don't think it was utterly unreasonable of him to believe he could take on the Soviets and win.

210 Russians fought the nazis. Combat. No one else in mainland Europe did. I mean who ? SO they rolled and rolled. In Russia all of a sudden they met resistance. They tried and tried to get an idea of Russian/Soviet military capability and supply/war machine capacity. There were many espionage games played. When Nazis invaded, Soviets transported many factories behind the Urals to support the war effort. They basically built munitions factories out of nothing in the middle of fields and worked 24/7. Not sure adolf was ready for that type of commitment. Maybe he thought he was dealing with the Belgians or something. Though, Germany and Russia went to war before. But it was not the same - this was Soviet Russian and Nazi Germany. Past "engagements" were forgotten.

211 Like if Yugoslavia's government had not flipped from pro-Axis to anti and the Italians had not invaded Greece and become bogged there. Imagine Barbarossa launched 4 weeks earlier. Moscow?

That's my guess, followed by a negotiated peace a la 1917. Where the line is drawn determines what follows, if the Nazis occupy Russia to a north south line at about Moscow Stalin would tried to move Soviet industry beyond the Urals to rebuild. Would he have succeeded? Dunno, there's all the raw materials in the world out there, but absolutely no infrastructure. If the Nazis settled for a smaller bite of Russia then Stalin is in a better place.

Assuming in this case that the US/UK don't invade Fortress Europe (a real possibility if Hitler has a secure East), then the war peters out followed by WWIII in the 1960s, with Russia playing the role of 1930s Germany.

Nope, bogged down trying to cross rivers that were overflowing due to extremely heavy rains the prior winter and spring. Hitler couldn't have taken off more than a few days earlier. His bigger problem was the loss of so much aircraft during the Battle of Britain. Lost a bunch of Stukas, which were fantastic battlefield tactical artillery and tank busters. Lost a bunch of fighters which could provide air cover and, perhaps more importantly, act as flying machine guns necessary because of the Sov's enormous manpower advantage. The lost medium bombers could've harassed assembly areas. Then there were all the resources diverted to killing Jews.... Then, what may have made the difference, is Hitler's failure to call a winter halt when the Rasputitsa hit. Allowing for local adjustments, Germany could've dug in and wiped out waves and waves of attacking Sovs in late November/early December instead of being overrun themselves. Don't get me wrong about how it turned out.

235 As opposed to Stanhope Ring, Hornet CAG, who when he reached the reported position of the Japanese carriers turned towards Midway thinking Nagumo had kept going.

They found empty ocean and ran low on fuel. Some landed at Midway while others straggled back to the carrier. So they missed out.

If they had arrived would have meant two more squadrons of Dauntless dive bombers over the carriers. So Hiryu would have probably been plastered. Thus Yorktown would not have been repeatedly attacked and finally sunk by an I-boat.

After Midway I have never run across Stanhope Ring leading another air strike.

237 Speaking of aircraft carriers, I finally read Shattered Sword last week. It's the Battle of Midway from the Japanese perspective (but not written by Japanese authors).

Excellent book that I think corrected a lot of myths about the battle. The authors went a bit "native", I think. They seem very disappointed that the Japanese did not acquit themselves better against the Americans, who couldn't seem to get out of their own way.

One thing I hadn't previously known was that the main Japanese naval bases were very near Hiroshima, and that the Kido Butai sortied from there to hit Pearl Harbor and Midway. Seems to me the A-Bomb targeting of Hiroshima may have been more poetic justice than I'd previously thought.

I now see them once in awhile if the weather's nice, because they're not allowed indoors now with us. My son and his wife had their first child last February. I have seen that granddaughter twice. Once outdoors on Mother's day, and once this past Thanksgiving. Short visit because it was cold. I will not see that granddaughter again until June, when we can meet outdoors again. This even after my son got Covid after two Pfizer shots. If anything my kids have gotten more anal.

As Walter Lord noted in Incredible Victory, each air group pushed over thinking they were alone only to pull out and see the other air group attacking also.

259 I don't think you have to necessarily die of COVID only in order to be fairly counted as a COVID death.

I know plenty of people that are 'healthy' with two comorbidities, that if they contracted COVID and went into the hospital and died, I think could be fairly attributed to COVID.

What I think needs to be removed from the counts are people that were in the hospital for some other reason and were then tested and found to have COVID, and so they were counted.

A COVID death should be "a COVID-caused symptom is why you died".

It also wouldn't surprise me if they have to go to rationing, at least for some products.

When I was young, I remember the old timers describing war rationing during WWII, and was just reading about that.

National speed limit of 35 mph (to save gasoline and tires). You were rationed gasoline based on need. They halted the commercial sale of automobiles, but with a lot of inventory of new vehicles still on hand. Production facilities shifted to war production of course.

Anyway, only those with need were allowed to purchase that limited inventory of new cars. Doctors were such class. Preachers were another.

And no one could "hoard" more than 5 tires. Four and a spare. If you had more than 5, it would be confiscated.

It took the Wehrmacht with total freedom of maneuver and Luftwaffe with total air superiority almost two months to reduce the Belgian forts. The Germans sure as hell didn't think they'd just rolled over them. The Poles gave them hell, too -- it took weeks for the supposedly fully mechanized Blitz to roll up cavalry charging with lances. And the dash to the sea in France cut up German lines of supply and communication so badly that they had to sit in place for a couple of months to get reorganized. We call it a stunning victory, but the Germans weren't so sure.

285 Regarding "price controls", we need to be ready to call out their hypocrisy. The decision makers *already* understand supply and demand curves (aka "Economics 101"). The poker "tell" was Biden's pointless move to sell off some of the oil strategic reserve. That's a move that acknowledges that higher supply leads to lower prices.

We've got to get the message out that the *marxists* can't SELECTIVELY invoke basic economics. IF they understood supply and demand when it comes to oil, they understand it with regard to labor, utilities, housing, etc. We've got to force our friends and neighbors to pick a side. If supply and demand is an accurate representation of human behavior, they can't be allowed to IGNORE IT just because they want to.

Again, my sense of WWII is largely derived from sophisticated tabletop wargames, which cannot capture the uncertainties of the past, but I cannot fathom how Japan prevails unless the U.S. simply got discouraged and gave in (which I do not see). Japan was stretched to the limit by the end of their initial offensive in the Pacific. I'm sure that there's an alternate universe where they prevailed, but mathematically it would be threading a needle.

That Japanese DD was racing back to the fleet after having depth-charged the USS Nautilus repeatedly.

The authors of Shattered Sword were candid in their conclusion that the US was still going to bury the Japanese fleet in carriers even if the US had lost at Midway. We were launching an Essex class fleet carrier every two months in 1943.

The authors also scolded the Japanese for their "Fuck It! Let's Die Gloriously For The Emperor!" approach to warfare. You start a war you know you are going to lose and that will burn your country down to the bedrock because . . . BANZAI!

312 @295: "Fill up the bathtub with warm water and lay in it. Bring a paperback book and do some reading."

I'm very familiar with excessive reading in the bathtub, and foot controls of the taps and drain to keep things always warm. Never did stock up on electric blankets though. My old kitty would probably like one, but then again, she's got a bed or two on top of the usually functional radiators; same difference.

Because they were advancing on it and it commanded a key river crossing. Nothing odd or strange about striking an enemy position as your ground troops move to occupy it.

You don't even need to get into the fact that it was also what would normally be a called a legitimate military target (what with all the weapons factories there).

322 I have to disagree with you, Old Cat, on Suvorov.

He describes in very great detail the movements of Soviet armies toward the new border with Germany (in central Poland), the intentional destruction by the Soviets of their defensive lines (the same type the Finns had used to mail the Reds in '40), and a lot of other detail that convinced me that Russia was doing exactly what Germany was doing in the summer of '41, prepping for an invasion. They were just a couple weeks behind in scheduling.

We will never know of course. Things happened the way they happened.

328 The losses to the bomber squadrons were pretty high.

McClusky's long search resulted in sinking two carriers but many of his planes then went into the drink trying to return to the carrier due to fuel exhaustion.

Ring's bombers mostly survived their misadventure, only a few went into the drink. So they were pretty much intact for the Hiryu strike in the later afternoon and the strikes the next day against Mikuma and Mogami.

Yorktown's SBDs returned from the strike that sank Soryu to find their carrier under attack from Hiryu's planes. So most landed aboard Enterprise and merged with their surviving dive bombers for the rest of the battle. Lem Massey ditched his SBD beside the cruiser Astoria.

In my game theory I actually think that may have unintentionally given Hitler more time to armor up and create his super weapons before he attacked. Of course you could say it also gave Stalin more time to do what he wanted. Anyway the decision to stop the advance was an instant bad military decision that was on the same level as their delay in responding to D-Day. Of course Imho only .

The lowest tier of the gasoline rationing was the "A" stickers (you can find old pictures with these ration stickers on the windshield).

That was good for 3 -4 gallons *per week*. Next was the "B" level, and that got you 8 gallons per week, and that was given to war production workers. Next up was "C". Doctors got those. And then some others. The highest tier was "X", which gave an unlimited ration. You can buy all the gas you needed. Police and fireman got these as well as others. Some doctors got those. Even clergy.

There was a scandal when it was learned that members of Congress were getting the "X" ration stickers.

Such a peaceful, harmless little town. Also the home of the Spanish Army's sole source of sidearms. Can't imagine why anyone would think it a military target.

The Communists drastically overestimated the loss of life. Fake historians like Anthony Beevor still site 1,800+ dead like it has any relation to reality. The truth is closer to 1/10 of that because a single bomb happened to score a direct hit on an air raid shelter.

The Germans sent about 20 aircraft, whose total bomb load was less than what four B-17s could carry. Not exactly what you'd use to annihilate a town.

As a result Czechoslovakia was dismembered and Adolf started to really believe his own hype.

Even after war erupted, the British bureaucracy tried very hard to lose the Battle of Britain. The pilot schools were not running at 100% capacity even as hundred or so RAF pilots were dying per month. The Air Ministry tried to be a miser on issuing new fighters to Fighter Command so Lord Beaverbrook basically stole it from them and supplied needed Spitfires and Hurricanes straight to the units.

The German military got rattled because there really was nothing to stop the French. Hitler blew it off. Hitler turned out right as the French then pulled back to their vaunted Maginot Line.

If the French had really pushed, the course of the war would have been different. But the French mindset was not offensive, they expected to fight the Great War again and beat the Bosch.

When they stuck to that, they were often successful, when they got away from it, things went badly.

The heavy water that the Germans focused on was not sufficient for achieving enhanced uranium. Also, many of the key members of the German nuclear program were not interested in giving the Nazis this kind of power. lastly, the Germans did not have the industrial resources to produce a bomb.

That's a depressing book. Another is "The German War" by Nicholas Stargardt. The author read thousajds of letters from soldiers to their families and vice-versa. 383 Mobility vs locked down engagements was also a big difference in how people reacted to WWI (after the war.)

There is some debate on just how close the Germans were to an atomic bomb. After the surrender, they housed some captured German physicists, including Werner Heisenberg, in bugged quarters (some big house somewhere in England). They wanted to listen in on their discussions.

They concluded they weren't all that close. Heisenberg was surprised that the US managed to do it, the story goes.

But then there are other stories that were closer than we thought.

390 Richthofen, relation to the Red Baron, was in charge of the Condor Legion. He was openly skeptical of the value of Udet's dive bomber toys before Spain. But in Spain, he learned how to use them for close air support and became a believer.

What really screwed the Luftwaffe from growing was the plane crash that killed Wever in 1936. He was pushing for the development of a heavy bomber in accordance with the theories of Douhet. But after his death, both heavy bomber designs were cancelled. And then the experiences of the Condor Legion taught the Luftwaffe they only needed tactical bombers.

But what about the He 177 Grief? What about it? Overly complex engines that caught fire so it was called the Fuhrer's Lighter. And because the RLM and Luftwaffe were so enamored with dive bombers, the Grief also had to be a dive bomber.

It's very true, which is part of what gives the two best Indiana Jones movies their punch. Himmler was really big into Nazi occultism and trying to make it a real thing, abetted by some of the other Nazi ideologues. An actual organization called the Ahnernebe existed, and its purpose was to identify and locate ancient artifacts
and teachings whose power could be made to serve the Nazi regime. (In Raiders of the Lost Ark the reptilian Todt would have been an Ahnernebe agent.)

The Ju-87 saw only very limited use in Spain. Mostly they were using obsolete Heinkels for strafing runs, which proved very effective.

The key takeaway from the Condor Legion's experience in Spain was that they continually rotated personnel. This meant that pilots and ground crews got combat experience and then shared this when they rotated back to Germany.

It is hard to overstate the value this provided to Germany. The only other European power to have so many combat-experienced pilots and crews was the USSR, and of course they shot most of them because Stalin. By all rights, the Luftwaffe should have been struggling with basic procedures in 1939, but they were actually better trained in mobile close-support than any of their adversaries thanks to Spain.

410 Germans weren't close, and were never on a serious path to, the bomb. Some of the reasons stated by others above. Only time the project was seriously considered in allocation of resources, its timeline (long, way out there) killed it on arrival. At that point there was a desperation to maximize production for critical items needed Right Now.

No poetic justice needed for Hiroshima's selection or location. Kure, not far away, was the Imperial Navy's center of gravity, in terms of shipyards, bases, and the naval academy at Eta Jima. But the Kido Butai sortied from far up north in the desolate unobserved Kuriles for Pearl Harbor, observing total radio silence, while simulated radio traffic was maintained down south. The unconventional north Pacific approach path to Hawai'i also called for this.

And Hiroshima was possibly the biggest military target in Japan on August 6. It was the HQ and major rear base of the Second Area Army, or Second General Army, tasked with defending southern Kyushu from Allied invasion. Most of its command staff and possibly tens of thousands of its personnel were killed by the bomb.

But worse, he'd also have to invent a Red Army in 1941 capable of an offensive on the scale imagined. Because it didn't exist on the ground, in terms of equipment, personnel, training, leadership, infrastructure, logistics.

If one can force oneself through Glantz's "Stumbling Colossus", the data and details are there.

The massive encirclement disasters were the result of Soviet ineptitude and inexperience (and Budyonniy and Stalin and others who didn't know how to react) and German tactical virtuosity. Stalin had just purged the living hell out of the officer corps. I remember some estimate from the time that it would take something on the order of 20 years (peacetime) for them to restore the experience and ability and organization that Stalin just gave away. 434 And there lots of other take-aways and things of interest in Stargardt's Book "The German War" that Sharkman mentioned above, highly recommend it. I believe the author's specialty is women and children in the Reich, but through his research he developed a much broader menu of things to discuss and the book is the result.

Many historians make use of the surviving reports of the Sicherheitsdienst (Security Service, SD) compiled by a network of agents throughout Germany, whose main task was to monitor popular thinking, morale, etc. It's pretty amazing and direct insight into popular opinion of the times. These books, and Goebbels' diary, are essential to understanding reality and thinking on the German side.

There were two big reasons why the Nazis never got The Bomb. first, is that many of the scientists who staffed the Manhattan Project were refugees from the Nazi and Italian Fascist regimes. They took their knowledge and papers with them, and Heisenberg and the remaining loyal scientists had to start over from scratch in many parts of the project. The second reason was that the UK and USA made strenuous efforts to make sure the Nazi project never advanced. It's easy to kick the Luftwaffe chiefs for neglecting a strategic bombing force, but there wasn't a Wehrmacht long-term strategy that would require extended-range bombers with heavy payload. They moved from short-range campaign to short-range campaign, until the fighting in the USSR and the North African campaigns brought home the shortcomings which the Luftwaffe had been quick to explain away after the Battle of Britain. The UK and USA developed a strategic bombing program because their military flying arms required covering a lot of distance to reach enemy targets. The Luftwaffe attempted to catch up in 1942-44, but by then they were seriously behind in the game.

Trouble with that scenario is that it is easier to defend than attack, so if the Germans mopped the floor with the Russians sitting there, the Russians would have been smoked even worse if they were attacking

Hitler didn't understand that building a navy requires a lot of dedicated resources, and a lot of time. The Two-Ocean Navy that the USA would use starting in 1943 to drive the U-boats from the North Atlantic, support the various landings in Europe, and begin the serious dismantling of the Japanese defensive network started building in 1938. Its construction required port facilities ten times beyond what Nazi Germany could hope to muster. That being said, if Hitler had waited until 1942, the surface Kriegsmarine would have been double what it was in 1940, with both Bismark class BBs also available, with the "Plan H" ships on the slips, plus one fleet carrier and two light carriers.

481 Germany's material disadvantage wouldn't have been fixed or even much altered if they had more vehicles and fewer capital ships. They bit off vastly more than they could ever chew, and they didn't expect to need to chew it all.

Germany's classic Bewegungskrieg (war of motion or movement) derived from the same fundamental situation - material inferiority requiring quick decisive victories. And the 1930s approach wasn't different. A quick victory over the USSR was *the* fundamental planning assumption, even more the strategic assumption, from the get-go.

Japan also never expected to defeat the US in a straight-up all-out prolonged war. Every stratagem was based on quick victories, "decisive battles", and a political settlement.

Leaving aside mechanization of ground forces, Germany was coming up against material hard limits as early as 1941.

Vivid memory of sitting in a steak house in Bellevue WA in 2001 watching Duke beat Arizona in the National Championship game and at the table next to mine is an old man showing his grandson a photo album. Which was a hundred photos of the Lady Lex at the Battle of the Coral Sea. Incredible photos I'd never seen anywhere else. Planes taking off, Japanese planes bombing, Lexington exploding, sinking. Men in the water being rescued by destroyers. It was an amazing collection of photos.

The grandson was riveted by the old man's tale. When the game ended I put my hand on the old sailor's shoulder and said "Thank you for being out there in harms way for us" and his eyes just shined. I'll never forget that old sailor.

That sort of half-assed strategic thinking is why the Chamberlain war cabinet dropped the ball in Norway, then got gobsmacked by the blitzkrieg. Plus the true brit heavy bombers were still being finished; it's hard to do effective strategic bombing with Blenheims, Whitleys, and Hampdens. When Churchill took over, the RAF was told to get to bombing strategic targets for real.

489 exdem13 with a key point - German rearmament had a master plan, but it wasn't calling for anything like general readiness for a major war anytime close to 1939. That was waaaay ahead of schedule. Why it started then is a whole nuther story, but the German military was essentially launched into action well before it expected to be. And the big shock came after the relief and surprise in 1940.

When You Know Who first broached the USSR thing with the top military, in December 1940 (think it was December), there was some shock and dismay. And it wasn't just the brass that was thinking that, essentially, the war was over, and won. Goebbels' diaries I think has a fair amount on popular uneasiness with Barbarossa (pin-drop silence in Berlin when it was announced, vs. raucous outpouring of relief and celebration in June 1940).

====
That's the cardinal difference between naval and ground warfare strategy. Naval strategy is the long game, limiting the enemy's means of supply and manufacture while threatening enemy ports and coasts with the perpetual threat of attack. With the short-term land strategy Hitler could roll the dice for an immediate victory and payout. By the Spring of 1940 he was riding high, and the Anglo-French-Belgian consortium was holding fast in "phony war" positions and waiting for the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe hit them. It was the prolonged fighting in the USSR and the Med that busted Hitler's winning streaks.

499 Aetius, not sure they came that close to defeating the USSR. Even with the counter-factuals to help, still not likely. Aside from 2 days of popular chaos in Moscow in October '41, really no serious cracks in Soviet rule and order, even at the "darkest" moments of the war. Because it was a primal struggle, not a political one, for most.

Germany wildly under-estimated every important aspect of the USSR: industrial capacity, military potential, political control. They were stopped, and defeated, at Stalingrad before they were annihilated there. Their Caucasus push was stopped just before the point where it would have been untenable due to logistics.

Posted by: rhomboid at January 15, 2022 01:10 AM (OTzUX)

500 What sunk the 3rd Reich was two basic things. One, Hitler thought he had to beat the world in his lifetime. Germany had not even come close to building everything they could when they started the wat. Waiting another ten years may well have given them enough of a quality advantage to make up for the unavoidable lack of numbets. Doubt the West would have advanced so quickly in peacetime and the Germans were about 3 years ahead in everything but powerful piston engines. They just couldn't build it fast enough in wartime. Second, after conquering France, the Germans should have just stopped. Soviets weren't going to successfully invade, and England wouldn't have been able to by itself and wouldn't have been able to bomb Germany if Germany wasn't tied up in Russia. It would have been hard for FDR to get away with declaring war on Germany with the isolationist US public if Germany was just sitting in Europe. Without the Russian war Germany could have taken Africa and the Middle East easily. So it all comes down to Hitler being convinced he had to do it in his lifetime so the time had to be now.

One of the biggest "what ifs" of WW II is Barbarossa launching as originally scheduled in early May 1941, with enough time to reach Moscow before the autumn rains brought everything to a near standstill for a month. Hitler felt obliged to rescue Mussolini from Italian follies in Libya, Ethiopia, and the Balkans, and that took precious time, resources, and troops, forcing a delay until mid-June. The blitzkrieg failed to reach Moscow in 1941 because assets were tied up in Greece and North Africa.

Sounds like Berenson's ego's getting just a bit too big. I'm not terribly surprised. I've been burned by some of his previous erroneous Substacks and learned not to trust him. Guess you can take the reporter out of the NYT, but you can't take the NYT out of the reporter.

503 >> Sounds like Berenson's ego's getting just a bit too big.

That's probably a big part of it. Ego can be a petty thing. Berenson just took a cheap shot, totally uncalled for.

Malone has responded on his Substack, and he's sort of getting down to Berenson's level, counterattacking. Me, I can't really say anything, because I can act a big nut myself when I'm "dissed".

Guys, we're on the same side here. Let your ego and the petty shit go. Concentrate on the actual enemy, and not each other.

504 Germany wildly under-estimated every important aspect of the USSR: industrial capacity, military potential, political control. They were stopped, and defeated, at Stalingrad before they were annihilated there. Their Caucasus push was stopped just before the point where it would have been untenable due to logistics.
Posted by: rhomboid at January 15, 2022 01:10 AM (OTzUX)

Honestly, I don't know. Stalin had concentrated so much power in his own hands. Everything was routed through him. Part of the muffed response to Barbarossa was due to the fact that he was not willing to accept/process that it was happening and no one dared do anything against him. Would taking him out allow someone sane and better to then lead the defense? I dunno. Would it have led to splintering with the monster and a lot of the party apparatus in Moscow being dead? Could the Nazis have done more to foster rebellion? Sure, but were they capable of that?

History is fun like that because you have no idea how the ball is going to bounce sometimes.

507 The "bomb" itself wasn't that hard to make, it was fairly straightforward once the eggheads crunched the numbers.

The "gun" design for example the type dropped on Nagasaki, they didn't even feel the need to bother testing. They knew it would work.

The problem was getting enough fissionable material. After serious effort of about a year, they had managed to produce a few grams. And they needed pounds. They built huge complexes at Hanford, and Oak Ridge, and cyclotrons and eventually figured out gaseous diffusion and were able to start producing it in quantity. In 1945 they only had enough material to make 2 bombs. General Groves insisted on building this huge solid steel container, ultimately never used, to contain the fissionable material at the Alamogordo test site to recover it, if the first test only "fizzled".

There was no way Germany was going to resource the industrial and electrical production necessary to make nukes, not a chance. Only America had the money and material to do it, and it took a long time and was a huge pain in the ass to get done.

It does take some finesse to make a working nuclear bomb. The trouble is getting it to stay together long enough to release enough energy to make a big boom before it blows itself apart. That takes some work.

You can easily get a mass to go supercritical. You get a fizzle, a flash and lots of radiation and heat, but no big boom.

To get the boom, you've got to work on the details.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 15, 2022 02:05 AM (Mzdiz)

509 That's true of the implosion design. That was a huge technical hurdle, very problematic. Everything had to go off within milliseconds.

But again, they didn't even feel the need to test the gun design, it was that simple. They knew it would work. But it wasn't very efficient in terms of yield.

The whole thing was (mostly) an engineering challenge of actually getting the "stuff" that would go 'splodey.

Posted by: Common Tater at January 15, 2022 02:09 AM (PNCUr)

510 You also have to deliver the damn thing. It barely fit in a modified B-29 which was the most advanced bomber of WW2 and even then had problems that still needed to be engineered out (and superseded by jet propulsion).

That said, after much study, we concluded that anyone with the know-how and skill could produce a working nuclear bomb, and the only way to stop it was to limit the fissionable materials.

Some time after the way, they did and experiment. They hired some physicists, chemists and engineers with the goal of reproducing a nuclear bomb. They told them, hey, yes we have it, but we're wondering if maybe there's a better way to do, so we want you guys to try to reinvent this wheel. We'll give you all the money and resources you need.

That's what they told them. The real purpose was to see just how easy or hard it would be for those with the knowledge and skill to do it. The actual nuclear weapons people at Los Alamos were watching the project like a hawk, to determine when they had a working design.

They soon did, and the plug was pulled on that project. That was when they concluded that the only way to keep nuclear weapons contained was to limit the fissionable material necessary.

512 In many ways, the medical community treated the general population with the same indifference of the Tuskegee syphilis experiments. They just let people die, withholding treatment and took notes.

513 Emerging from lurkmode, about to log off and sleep.

Been reading the WW2 discussion. Haphazard as the knowledge imparted is, I've had quite an education from the commenters, tonight on ww2 and on previous nights on other wars. 'Ppreciate the ejjimication.

Turning cold with a trace of snow by morning, they say. Can't complain too much; it's been a mild winter so far her in NE Okla.

Sympathy for Teresa in FW. Haven't seen our son & his wife and our two grandkids since Mom's funeral in August. Total lockout, no replies on email, voice, or text, with us or with son's siblings. Isn't just the covid wars, but that seems to maybe be part of it. We barely know our grandbabies. Pride-arrogance-stupidity is a terrible disease.

Well, that's my unlurky comment for the night.

G'night, Horde. Y'all be wonderful.

Re the gun type "Little Boy" design. There was much disinformation about this worked. It wasn't until around 1995 that the true design of Little Boy was revealed. Before that, all accounts had the "gun" firing a projectile "plug" that went into a larger mass at the end.

Nope, that was a lie. The projectile was actually the larger mass, and the target was the smaller mass.

Yes, there was a lot of finesse in the gun type weapon, that wasn't known until 50 years later. Much disinformation was put out to keep the true design of it unknown.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 15, 2022 02:34 AM (Mzdiz)

515
IOW, the smaller plug into the larger core wouldn't have worked.

The design used two critical masses worth of U-235. The projectile mass itself was greater than a critical mass. You can read how all that worked, now.

No, the gun-type wasn't simple. It was only considered simple because of all the disinformation put out about it, which was all part of the game of anti-proliferation. :-)

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 15, 2022 02:37 AM (Mzdiz)

516 Yes, there was a lot of finesse in the gun type weapon, that wasn't known until 50 years later

You're still missing the point, badly. Yeah, they kept construction details out of Popular Mechanics.

That they didn't even bother testing the design, even though it had never been made, tells you everything you need to know.

All of the historical materials, interviews, books, scientists, they all say the same thing. The real trick was obtaining sufficient fissionable material. That's where all the money was spent, and it was a pain in the ass.

Germany could never have built bombs because of that fact alone. Not a chance.

Posted by: Common Tater at January 15, 2022 02:48 AM (PNCUr)

517
Everything you see published publicly about nuclear weapon design is lie. It's close to the truth, but it's careful disinformation desinged to eliminate critical details and send you down a rabbit hole that will result in failure if you tried to build one yourself.

One of my nuclear physics professors at Clempson Cow Colligde explained this to me decades ago. It's all disinformation.

Right now, we've learned a lot more about the gun-type device in Little Boy actually worked, after over 50 years of disinformation. But even then, I guarantee you there is still disinformation in there.

Every country who has working nuclear weapons knows this, and they do the same thing. They don't want anyone knowing all the critical details.

You try even a "simple gun type U-235" device based on public knowledge, it will fail. They put deliberate crap in there to fuck it up.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at January 15, 2022 02:48 AM (Mzdiz)

518
No, I'm not missing the point. I understand said point quite well. Nuclear weapons are not easy to create. It takes skill and finesse. And that is all kept close to the vest.

519 Speaking of The USSR in WWII, it might be worthy of considering just how much material support we gave them. How well would they have done against Hitler without all those White trucks and endless other made in America supplies?

Posted by: Weirddave at January 15, 2022 02:53 AM (sKs8Q)

520 Well if we were talking about anything other than "Could Nazi Germany have built Atomic Weapons?" I guess maybe you might have a point.

The point being, they didn't have the necessary industrial infrastructure for such a massive project. So the nuances of bomb design - that's all moot. The End.

530 Union Bank Robbery painting is interesting. I assume the inspiration was the 1997 shootout in North Hollywood where two guys armed with several full automatic weapons robbed a Bank of America branch in North Hollywood. The cops shot it out with them--armed mostly with pistols. More than 5,000 rounds were fired in less than an hour. Twenty people were injured--the two robbers were dead. Some yo yo relative of the two perps complained that the cops let one of the robbers "bleed out" in the street. Jeez, I'm all broken up about that.
