69% Disapprove Of How Applesauce Brain is Handling Inflation

By the way, the headline for ABC "News'" tweet for this was about approval for Biden's handling of the "economic recovery."

Have you ever seen a poll question about the economy reported that way -- editorialized to be about a "recovery"?

No, you haven't. This is the first time. They always just say "the economy," neutrally. They never editorialize and cast the economy in positive or negative terms when reporting poll findings about approval for the economy.

Until now, of course.

Because Biden asked his media friends to please put a positive spin on his disaster economy, and they complied.

But by the way, the public does not approve of his handling of "the economic recovery."

President Joe Biden is facing significant skepticism from the American public, with his job approval rating lagging across a range of major issues, including new lows for his handling of crime, gun violence and the economic recovery, a new ABC/Ipsos poll finds.

They did it again! They did it again!

More than two-thirds of Americans (69%) disapprove of how Biden is handling inflation (only 28% approve) while more than half (57%) disapprove of his handling of the economic recovery.

And again! Guys, I think they really want us to know that they're classifying this as a "recovery."

Do you feel recovered?

Partisan splits for inflation show expected negativity in Republican views (94% disapproving), but the survey also reveals weaknesses from Biden's own party with only a slim majority of Democrats (54%) approving. Biden's orbit is also hemorrhaging independent voters, with 71% disapproving of his handling of inflation.

...

The findings show Biden slightly above water in one sector: his handling of COVID-19. A slim majority (53%) of Americans approve of Biden's handling of the pandemic. Even so, Biden's COVID approval rating is now numerically at its lowest point in ABC/Ipsos polling since he took office, another warning sign for what might be a tough battle to maintain majorities in the U.S. House and Senate.

Only a bare majority -- 51% -- still support his vaccine mandates. Seven in ten allegedly think that mask mandates should remain in place -- or be more strict.

If you don't believe that -- and I don't -- consider what the real numbers should be for the rest of these questions.

Biden also sees lagging support for his handling of rising rates of violence in many places across the county. As the national murder rates see historic jumps, only a little more than 1 in 3 Americans (36%) approve of Biden's handling of crime, down from 43% in an ABC News/Ipsos poll in late October. Similarly, approval of Biden's handling of gun violence is 32%, down from 39% in the October poll. That figure shrinks among nonpartisans with only 1 in 4 independents approving of Biden's work on gun violence.

Note that this poll doesn't even measure his overall job approval -- did they just flinch from even asking the question, or is it so low they don't want to report it?

99 The ABC News report is even more fake news, in one respect. They completely omit the survey's numbers on POOTUS' handling of immigration: Approve 34%/Disapprove 63%. It's actually a little better (?!) than the previous period, which was 31/68, so ABC could have mentioned that, but chose not to.

Biden says the problem with his poll numbers is just covid and misinformation.

Chuck Todd says the problem is the persistence of both covid and Donald Trump, and neither is "Joe Biden's fault."

COVID has been one of his strengths his entire presidency.

That he's blaming covid instead of the border, the economy, foreign policy, regulation, or any social issue is interesting.

I think it's a huge signal (at least the second major signal in a few months) that the media needs to drop covid now.

53 A problem with this is that fixing inflation will take at least three quarters and likely closer to five, and that's if we act quickly and decisively. It can't be turned around for the summer midterm campaign season, but we could possibly start coming out of it by the next general.

If the Democrats were smart - and they're not, they're just ruthless - they'd tackle it right now. Pressure the Fed to start moving interest rates up and start cutting spending. Back off of BBB and start fighting inflation. They will lose the midterms if they do this, but they're very likely to lose the midterms anyway. If they pull it off, it'll be a midterm bloodbath but inflation will be in the rearview mirror by the time the next general comes along.

But they won't do this because it isn't compatible with their ambitions. So they're going to go harder and harder in the current direction. Then they will lose the general and that gives the next administration two years - three at the outside - to fix the problem. If it can't, the government will likely fail.

I never said they got into the situation through intelligence or even cunning, but the stark reality at this point is that Biden's presidency is continuing to fail because of covid as one of the two primary reasons (the other being inflation).

But Democrats completely broke their base psychologically regarding covid through safetyism. Their base cannot let go. Oregon teachers forcing small children to eat distanced outside in 40 degree temperatures because of covid fears is not the action of a people in control of their reasoning faculties.

77 "please put a positive spin on his disaster economy"

Where's the "disaster" of an economy? By what metric? I hate President F Joe Biden as much as the next conservative, but without hard data this is just rhetoric. The stock market is on fire. Earnings season was strong. Despite threats of supply problems and shortages and no holiday presents, that hasn't happened.

Yes, inflation is an issue and if left unchecked will become a real problem. But we've seen little signs of Jimmy Carter's "stagflation" -- stagnation coupled with inflation -- and interest rates remain low.

So while there are cracks in the economy, I don't think it's fair to call it a "disaster." And 90% of the cracks can be healed by getting rid of all the stupid CV19 restrictions and stopping printing endless money.

98 Actually, the reality is that they probably expected to waltz in, issue a few edicts, and have everything turn out fine. Biden was supposed to be taking a victory lap after successful mandates, BBB, and the Afghanistan withdrawal. He'd give his SOTU and be set up to retire while being heralded as the greatest president in 100 years.
Posted by: Colorado Alex in Exile at December 13, 2021 12:41 PM (wmDcS)

If you look at what dems were saying, they thought they could pass the BBB within 100 days, and then they could start pumping out cash and everyone would love them because they were all getting paid. And then Covid would end (because they wanted it to) and a "Miracle" economic rebound recovery would begin at the end of summer. And there was going to be no inflation because their Economic Theories said there wouldn't be.

That was the plan. If you notice Schumer is getting desperate to pass the BBB before they leave town for Christmas; I don't think he can. Everyone appears to understand that if it slips into the next year unpassed, it's dead. *Narrator's Voiceover: "It's Dead, Jim."*

102 Let me explain something. I would actually give President Puddin Head credit if there was some fundamental action he took that I could point to that was economically beneficial. Let me be clear, there are none. Keeping the Fed pumping and over inflating the market isn't one either. Puddin Head and Democrats have not taken a single action which contributed to this economy. None, and I defy anyone to point to anything they had to do with a recovery that was already on it's way- other then muck it up, hurt GDP, push inflation and overall make things more expensive. BTW, I did the same for Trump, this isn't new- and you know what, we can actually point to trade, tax and other material issues he accomplished that led to the (still going) Trump economy.

It sure is happening upstream. My company for one (high tech datacenter products) is on the razor's edge over supply chain problems. We can't get parts. Semiconductors (NAND memories especially) are increasingly hard to come by, with major suppliers not delivering on time or budget. We're making parts substitutions that are shockingly expensive to handle repairs and replacements (including replacing things in pairs even if only part fails because we can't get matching parts). The supply chain issues are real and significant upstream.

And as for the latter, we do have stagflation right now. Ostensibly real GDP growth is running about 2%, but inflation is also being understated. It's likely flat or mildly receding. Employment is still down, too. Unemployment is down, but so is participation.

What would check it? The fed raising rates, which they will not do, ever? And if they do do it, what would happen then? Posted by: ace at December 13, 2021 12:45 PM (0G13K)

Joe Mannix and I (and others) were discussing this at the end of last week. They *need* to start raising interest rates now, but Jerome Powell is an even bigger idiot than William Miller was (Jimmy Carter's first Fed Chairman) Because of a total lack of leadership anywhere in DC right now, it will probably be May before anyone realizes we're really in trouble and we need to act.
BUT by then the Midterms will be in full swing, and *everyone* knows that raising interest rates during an election campaign kills whoever is in power, so there is going to be *huge* political pressure to do nothing till after the election - which will guarantee *massive* accelerating inflation all next year. If this plays out, I think it's realistic to expect price increases of 2 - 3 per cent *per month* by next fell. (annualized 24% - 36% inflation, the worst this country has ever seen)
we're already at 15% annualized, when measured honestly.

There are textbook responses to inflation. Huge amounts of wasteful spending, destroying our energy industry and disincentives to work are pouring gasoline on the fire

230 The Fed faces a Hobson's Choice on inflation. They are running out of tricks and they know it. The spending is distorting the real economy and the Build Back Bullshit will be the final nail. If you pump all that inflationary money into the economy behind everything else that has been dumped from stimulus to infrastructure, then play with rates, you will be severely fucked. This is a very tenuous situation and just scaling back asset purchases and nibbling at rates won't help.

Posted by: Marcus T at December 13, 2021 12:58 PM

You are correct. The only thing that will stop this mess is double digit interest rates and the Fed will never go there again unless a Republican gets elected, just like they did with Trump. The spending isn't going to stop either because all of this new $$$$ being injected into the economy will become permanent. We are screwed.

297 Colorado's Democratic Governor Jared Polis has said that a state face mask mandate is no longer necessary at this stage in the COVID-19 pandemic. However, New York state has just enacted its own mask mandate, about a week after the COVID-19 Omicron variant emerged in the state.

When asked why the state has not re-issued a mask mandate for all residents, Polis told Colorado Public Radio (CPR), "There was a time when there was no vaccine, and masks were all we had and we needed to wear them. The truth is we now have highly effective vaccines that work far better than masks ... We see [the availability of vaccines] as the end of the medical emergency."

Polis said that a new statewide mask mandate isn't necessary, even though researchers think that the newly emergent Omicron variant may be more contagious than previous variants of COVID-19. He said that evidence suggests that the currently available vaccines "hold up well" against the Omicron variants.

I'm missing something here. Under Carter the Fed's mandate was expanded to include low unemployment. So when did they expand the mandate to include low interest rates to allow servicing the debt without any concern for the future of the country?

There's no point in trying to figure out how to "fix it" because it can't be fixed - too late. Work on figuring out how to survive what's coming and and come out the other side with control over whatever's left of our government. (like Russia did after the USSR collapsed)

Another point I want to make.

Inflation is hard to measure but bear in mind that the price of most goods should have been dropping with advances in technology. We have recently had some of the greatest advances in manufacturing technology in history of man, and yet prices go up. This is a hard point to make in a gray box char. limit, but even if the price of a product is stable, we are seeing inflation.

No there isn't, and if they try it then it will fail. In order to turn any of that into money, they have to sell. Selling that much of it would just crash all the equity markets. They could play some game like issuing low-interest bonds backed by seized retirement accounts, but that won't work well as it will also cause tremendous drops in trading velocities. If the state tries to do something like seizing the retirement accounts, it will just cause a shocking destruction of market value and all those trillions will amount to a few hundred billion when they're done, at the expense of functional capital markets.

I'm with C5. I don't think they do this. They'll do a Tobin Tax or a so-called "wealth tax" first.

Safetyism. Yup. Especially with white liberal women, married or not. It has become part of their multi-deity Progressive religion. It is why female abortion advocates are not being hypocritical by wanting to force a medical procedure (COVID jabs) onto others.

Those women consider abortion a means of protecting their health and their personal freedom. They consider forcing others to get the jab a means of protecting their health and their personal freedom (e.g., ending lockdowns and overseas travel restrictions ASAP, not having their routine activities impacted because they are sick and maybe hospitalized). Hydrogen is used to make diesel and gasoline (Hydrocracking) and to remove sulfur (hydrotreating). Refineries use the vast majority of the hydrogen currently produced. Much of it is produced at the refinery.

This is a much better use of it than as a fuel. Oh, and no one makes it by electrolysis of water. That's way too inefficient. That's like just pissing away energy.

Steam methane reformers is how hydrogen is commercially produced. The feed stock is natural gas.

The only drawbacks right now are idiots terrified of hydrogen (but okay with gasoline), and the fact that it costs more energy to split out hydrogen than you get from the resulting gas, so its inefficient, and you have to us another energy source to get it.

My ideal solution would be for someone to come up with a method of using nuclear power plants to generate hydrogen as well as electricity.

The next big thing is Urea. Natgas is required to make it. Urea is required for diesel engines to run and for fertilizing the Midwest depleted soils that were made that way by growing corn to burn as ethanol.

China is halting exports, and Australia is already whining about shortages. The Junta is destroying the Natgas industry in the former US, Europe is begging Russia for natgas and is currently running a shortage.

And if you encouraged that process and stored the hydrogen you'd have a pretty efficient way of producing needed fuel for cars.

512 I believe in natural rights and the non-aggression principle. Not a tenet particularly favored by most right-wing politicians. (See: the drug war, abortion, prayer in public schools, legalized prostitution. Oh, and bump stocks.)

So I see you are not a fan of Burke. I'm a promoter of that which results in human flourishing. Snorting coke off the ass of a prostitute while the family is at home wondering why Dad takes so many "business trips" is not what I call human flourishing.

Freedom could be described as the Liberty to Do That Which is Right.

An admission that the calculation of the economic numbers has been changed in a huge way.
Somewhere, somehow they are cooking the books more than a whole kitchen of heavy-set Italians with nicknames.

"Jobs created, saved or funded" is going to look honest when the depth of their manipulation of the numbers is revealed. They want to cement the notion of recovery so trying to tell the truth will be seeing as "talking down the economy."

534 My ideal solution would be for someone to come up with a method of using nuclear power plants to generate hydrogen as well as electricity.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor

Hydrogen has a lot of problems. The main advantage had always been fuel cells but I don't see that as ever really happening. Without fuel cells I think some of the manufactured liquid fuels would be more competitive but it would require massive investment and volume first. It is hard to beat liquid for transportation, and if you go with a gas then methane is much better than hydrogen.

There will always be individual companies that are over-valued even in the strongest, most rational market. Obviously I was talking about the market as a whole being supported by earnings.

And Tesla is a debatable case. I personally have not invested in Tesla because I believe it's over-valued and highly volatile. I save my "go bad" money for private equity and VC where the risk is even higher but the returns can also much higher. But there's a case to be made that TESLA has huge upside potential due to its positioning in the EV market at a time when many gov'ts are trying to kill off IC cars.

I don't agree with this, but many people do and I can't say they are definitely wrong. If they are right, then the company isn't over-valued.

Framers called that ordered liberty where societal pressure instead of laws acts to work for that flourishing. Same reason as they believed that only a virtuous population was fit for representational government. There was no pressure to make localities uniform in their culture or laws.

540 Hydrogen has a lot of problems. The main advantage had always been fuel cells but I don't see that as ever really happening.

There are hydrogen engines that work differently than just burning the stuff. They combine the hydrogen with oxygen and generate energy from the chemical reaction, rather than an alternate combustion engine. They aren't fuel cell cars.

548 And as for the latter, we do have stagflation right now. Ostensibly real GDP growth is running about 2%, but inflation is also being understated. It's likely flat or mildly receding. Employment is still down, too. Unemployment is down, but so is participation.

549 Hilarious!!! Someone actually claiming the economy is "just fine", that record numbers of container ships at sea waiting to unload and containers piling up with no place to go is just "more of the same" supply chain issues, and the most over-inflated market in ages, possibly ever, "is not a bubble"

What the actual fuck ?

You do understand that you're basing all this on government stats that are a known load of complete bullshit, right ? That actual economic "growth" has been hovering around ZERO for over a decade, that actual unemployment that is tied to the incredibly realistic "participation rate" near 60% is more like 25%, and that inflation is now over 15% after averaging over 5% for the past two decades ?

The economy is mostly mythical. And right now, it is hanging by a thread waiting for the vaccine mandate / inflationary caution to put it out of its misery.

For fuck sakes
