Music Hath Charms To Sooth A Savage Breast...And It Sounds Good Too!

musicpage.jpg

Many (most?) of us have music libraries that dwarf that of our parents, courtesy of technology. Whether that is good I have no idea, although when I put my phone on random play from the entire list I will occasionally think, "What the hell is that?" How it got there I have no idea, but I do not like Taylor Swift or All Time Low or Rhett Miller (who?) or Willie Nelson (doing classic country).

But some music is grand, and not always for the same reasons. Some is simply wonderful to hear, and some brings us back to our youth or a summer fling or the night we proposed to our spouse or a million things that our weird brains connect with the soundtrack playing in the background.

So below the fold are a few pieces of music that remind me of things. Some of it is great, some of it is, let's be honest, crap. But every song reminds me of something or someone or a time long ago...

How about you? The more embarrassing the music, the better! And be honest, this is for posterity.

18 When I was a pre-teen, my first records were Donny & Marie and Captain & Tenille. D&M didn't impress me a lot, but I thought (and think, to the extent I think at all) Tenille had a lovely voice.

43 dartist. Pavarotti had some pipes, indeed. He did far more than just "hit the notes".

His notes penetrated, and lifted the soul. His voice made the world a better place, to those with ears to hear.

Carrie Underwood's version of "How Great Thou Art", at the Country Music Awards. The year she sang it and it moved HER, and she broke towards the end of the song.

That's what great music is, to me. Most of it is just a tune. Often, very GOOD tunes, stuff I like to hear. But the GREAT music, changes a person in subtle and profuond ways. That is what high-end stereos are for. The good stuff deserves to SOUND like the good stuff that it is.

106 Different music for different missions. About once a year, I need to sip too much bourbon, and go on a ride with the Moody Blues, taking in the whole Dark Side of the Moon on MSFL Ultradisk. Is the music the greatest? Certainly, not. But does it take me back to some exact points in time, with all the memories, sounds, emotions, scents and feels? ABSOLUTELY YES.

Prepping for battle would have to be Metal, but going INTO the fray, would have to be Ride of the Valkyries. Nothing, but NOTHING gets the blood up like a rousing chorus of "Kill da Wabbit...Kill da WABBIT!"

Years latter I was at a concert with my then girlfriend and the warm up group was Bobby Pickett.
When they played the song , "Monster Mash" a girl setting a couple of rows down from us turned around and smiled at me. It was Candy. Last time I ever saw her. Still remember the smile.

I liked that song, but even as a lad thought the cake thing was the funniest thing ever. Then SCTV did an impression of the singer doing it while his backup singers sat down and read a book during the musical interludes and it was the funniest ever.

When he was done, I said thank you and tried to tip him. He wouldn't take the money and said, 'Oh, no, thank YOU" and his eyes were shiny. I guess we both felt sanctified.

Last week, I watched a new Celtic Women broadcast on the accursed PBS, but as I'm only getting about 10 cable channels, it was all that was on.

They've replaced 100% of the original Celtic Women ensemble with a "New Cast". Gone is the wee elfin dancing violinist, the very MIFLY redhead and Irish Colleen and the others. Guess they'd aged out and "marketing" decided that a younger choir would appeal.

The new girls are young, talented and comely. But alas, the same magic just ain't quite there. I canna explain it, Cap'n, even giving it all that they've got, they just don't quite reach.

181 My music tastes are all over the place but I prefer smaller, more intimate styles these days. That could be small combo jazz, madrigals, Celtic folk music, string quartets and chamber orchestras, even Riders in the Sky cowboy songs and Beach Boy ballads like Kokomo.

I heard Diana Krall backed up by the London Symphony. It was a waste. Krall on piano and singing, a jazz guitar, string bass, and simple drums is superb. Adding an orchestra is gilding a lily that doesn't need it and diminishes the original.

They used to have a public performance of "The Messiah" at the Southern Theater in Columbus every December, and the audience was encouraged to sing along. I think the Covid hysteria has killed that, though.

I went to it a few years ago (2016?), and sang along to the parts I remember (learned that as a teenager in the school choir, and it sticks with you) and I almost cried during several parts.

221 I played French horn in high school, and the band instructor was pretty eclectic in his choice of music. We did the 1812 Overture, and Max had a starting pistol loaded with blanks that he used in place of cannon. To this day, I love Vaughn Williams "English Folk Song Suite" and Holst's "First Military Suite in E flat". We also did the overture to " How the West Was Won". Outside of band, the English Invasion had begun and the folk song wave was underway. I played rhythm guitar and tried to sing. It was a fun time.

I collect movie sound tracks. I'm pretty sure "Lawrence of Arabia" was the first one I picked up. #3 son shares my taste for soundtracks, and introduced me to Two Steps From Hell. I downloaded "Dragon" last week, and have been listening over and over to "Emerald Princess". He also introduced the XO and I to Sabaton. I LOLed this morning at " The Winged Hussars", and the mounted men charging behind the tanks with helicopters over head.

274 204 ... "did you ever do the Jazz of Folk Festivals here in town?"

Hi JackStraw,

Oh yeah, from the time I was a small child for the Jazz Festival. My parents were fans and as the oldest I got to go with them. Heard most of the giants of jazz over the years. What a privilege.

I started going to the Folk Festival in the early 60s and it helped form my taste for traditional folk music. I still remember the 'outrage' about Bob Dylan and his electric guitar. And saw Arlo Guthrie when he debuted Alice's Restaurant. Also, the folk group I played with in high school played there on an amateur session. Must have been several thousand people in the audience. We did well judging by the applause (we were the youngest performers) and I was scared to death.

Good times and memories.

You can draw a line from Elvis to a lot of modern day rock. He influenced tons of people, just like Buddy Holly did.

And besides Harry Connick Jr., the singing style of Frank Sinatra is kind of dead.

But I still think that part of Elvis' life and stuff is baffling.

384 The Mozart Concerto No. 5, though beautiful, is not actually ranked very high in difficulty - you'd be surprised (as I was) that "running" allegros are ranked rather lower in the piano difficulty scale than other songs with more "two handed" requirements.

Chopin pieces are pretty complex and come in around 5 on the 1 - 8 scale for pieces to learn, and certain Bach pieces that sound rather easy to an untrained ear are considered level 6 - which is the beginning concert scale to an ascribing classical pianist.

But Mozart's stuff always seemed rather easy and intuitive to my daughter - the Boswell spawn loved them - and I can't play by the way, but if you have a child that grows up doing this, you learn all the pieces and the difficulties ascribed to them.

525 Morgan James, Juilliard. How can someone that slim have three sets of lungs?

526 ABBA

And the Winner Takes it All. I love that song.

The notes Agnetha hits are stratospheric and the emotion is heavy but it's a beautiful song, though about loss.

527 512 I love The Smashing Pumpkins. I suppose that makes me weird. This is acceptable.

----------------------------

Whenever I hear about The Smashing Pumpkins, I'm always reminded of the Simpsons episode where Homer joins a music show like Lollapalooza. Billy Corgan comes over to Homer and introduces himself.

Billy Corgan: Hi. Billy Corgan. Smashing Pumpkins.
Homer: Homer Simpson. Smiling politely.

Did you hear about the guy who ate for a year on the meal pass @ MM?

Posted by: redchief at December 11, 2021 09:58 PM (Kab4E)

529 His early stuff like Greetings From Asbury Park were great. And he did put on a hell of a live show.

Posted by: JackStraw

I was a YUGE fan in the 1970's. But as the 80's wore on, his "Working Class Hero" schtick got a little old.

"Born in the USA" really started the big turn-off. So much phoney in that record.

He grunts his songs out. A wonder he's never had a hernia. But he did put on a great live show. He used to perform for 4 hours.

530 Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs

-
Fascinating and very moving piece. The second movement is about a young Polish girl writing to her mother on the walls of her Gestapo cell as she awaits death. (In real life, she survived the war.)

531 I would list my favorite ABBA song but a needed key on my keyboard doesn't work. It's about a dancing girl. Chi_uitita.

But that's crazy, and yet also possible now that they are open 365 days/yr.

Yup. Very cool. Kind of a weird thing being a fan of Heart when we were such hard rockers. I say "we" because my best good friend since '76 is also a big Heart fan.

542 Michael Stanley died of cancer. I'm pretty sure a lifetime of smoking cigarettes didn't help. MSB was a hell of a band. Underrated. Never got big. Pretty much a regional band. Proves that not everything that came out of Cleveland sucks. :-)

545 Morgan James is phenomenal.

But there was another singer/ band mentioned here years ago I can't find now. Singer was in lingerie in a nightclub. Band dressed like Mad Men. Anyone know?

Meanwhile, catch Jewel at Woodstock 99 absolutely killing it.

546 Look at all of the Michael Stanley Band fans in here!

Puddleglum, God bless and keep ya!

Notorious BFD, "Rosewood Bitters" is probably my favorite MSB song!

Still have Stagepass. "Midwest Midnight" was greatness. And that WAS one of the best album covers ever!

Posted by: Sam Adams at December 11, 2021 10:42 PM (VDbGO)

547 And Bozo Conservative, too!

Wow. That band opened for Journey, and absolutely KILLED IT.

And still somehow never got the popularity we thought they deserved.

RIP, Michael Stanley.

No, but you did remind me that Morgan sang with The Skivvies, which is like that without the Mad Men costumes.
