Gun Thread: 12/5/21 Edition!

elmer fudd scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! It's December! How in the hell did that happen? The months and years really come at you fast, don't they? Not a heck of a lot going on in WeaselWorld right now. Mostly work stuff this past week but I hope to get to the farm for a few days next week. After that, it'll be time to think about Christmas plans. We usually head for the NC beaches for the week and rent a house; no crowds, no bugs, and a surprising number of businesses and restaurants are open year 'round. Do you stay at home or go somewhere?

Special Announcement - Wedding Bells in Wyoming!

Double Holy Shitballs!! Our pals Jesse (not) in DC and Screaming in Digital recently tied the knot and to seal the deal headed to the range for celebratory gunfire! Can't wait for the report, and a bigly Gun Thread Congratulations to both of you!!

With that, let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

New Product Recommendation

deep creep scaled.jpg

This week I have a new product recommendation, having recently added Sea Foam Deep Creep to my gun cleaning and maintenance arsenal. I have used Sea Foam products for years as engine oil treatments and fuel stabilizers, mostly on stuff at the farm which sees irregular use, and I am a big fan. I guess Deep Creep must be a new(er) product because I only recently started to see it advertised, but after trying it I was immediately impressed! So much so that it's become my new go-to product as a general rust inhibitor for guns spending most of their time in the safe. Spray it on, wipe down the excess and you're done. It doesn't have any harsh odors and as far as I can tell does a really very good job!

kroil scaled.jpg

I still like Aerokroil for certain applications, but a 12 ounce can of Deep Creep is around $10 or approximately half the price of Aerokroil.

It has always been my practice to recommend only items I like, buy with my own dinero, and use on my own stuff. Try it and let me know what you think!

First up, our pal A.H. Lloyd sends us a very nice report on .32 caliber revolvers. Take it away, AHL!

I may just have stumbled upon pocket pistol perfection. As Horde members know, I've been really enjoying .32 ACP pistols and as strong proponent of revolvers, it seemed the perfect time to explore other uses of this almost forgotten caliber. To be clear, this wasn't just a nostalgia trip; I wanted to see if .32 revolvers are still viable self-defense options. My wife has been having increasing issues with arthritis and grip strength, and something that has both a light, compact platform and smooth recoil would be perfect for her.

My research revealed three viable options in the current era: .32 Smith and Wesson Long, .32 H&R Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum. For brevity's sake, I'm just going call them .32 Long, .32 Magnum and .327 Magnum respectively from now on.

ahl 1 120521 scaled.jpg

Back in the day, .32 Long was very popular caliber, widely used by civilians and police agencies, most famously the New York Police Dept. We now look at it as severely underpowered, but in fact .32 Long has pretty decent ballistics for its size. In terms of total energy, .32 Long has twice the horsepower of comparable .22 Long Rifle or .25 ACP cartridges. That's pretty good. The pistols chambered in it generally run less than $200, which is nice if you are on a budget. Another bonus of .32 Long revolvers is that they can chamber and safely fire .32 Short cartridges. It's not that common these days, but one sees it from time to time. I imagine that would be super-mild.

Next up for consideration was .32 Magnum, which was developed in the 1980s to rejuvenate the market for small-frame revolvers. In terms of energy, .32 Magnum is actually superior to the standard loads for both .38 Special and .380 ACP. Revolvers that support .32 Magnum can also fire .32 Long, so you get a bit more flexibility. A nice feature is that these use the exact same size frames as compact .38 Special revolvers and the smaller size cartridge means you get an extra round in your cylinder: six .32 Magnum vs five .38 Special.

This brings us to.327 Magnum, which was designed to compete with the .357 Magnum. Indeed, these typically use the same frames so you will get six .327 Magnum to five 357 Magnum. Because of its very robust construction, revolvers in .327 Magnum can also use all of the above-mentioned cartridges.

Here lies the rub. I've fired .357 Magnums out of a compact frame and I won't willingly do it again. There is reason to believe that the felt recoil on .327 Magnum is less, but you're still carrying a much heavier revolver. The Undercoverette is almost the same size and weight as my Taurus 85 Total Titanium; my mail scale puts them an ounce apart. A Ruger LCR in .327 Magnum adds almost 50 percent more weight.

There's also the economics of the actual weapons. Pistols in .327 Magnum cost significantly more than .32 Magnums - on the order of twice as much. A new Undercoverette could be got for under $350 while LCRs run $750 or more.

ahl 2 120521 scaled.jpg

The .327 Magnum gives you a heavier weapon and harder recoil while significantly increasing your purchase price. This pretty much violates all of my criteria. In terms of performance, the Undercoverette is a total sweetheart. Yes, as the photo indicates, it's basically a clone of the J-frame/Taurus 85 platform, but the felt recoil with .32 Long and .32 Magnum are both significantly less than what you get with .38 Special. Can you tell which is which? I'll give the answer in the comments.

Firing .32 Long is pretty mild, definitely more than a .22, but hardly alarming. When I moved up to .32 Magnum, I found myself in a sweet spot – crisp enough recoil to feel like you're doing something meaningful, but mild enough that shooting one-handed was a breeze. Recovery was quick and easy. It's hard to describe other than to say it was pretty much the Platonic ideal of a Magnum revolver; hits hard, shoots flat, but at the same time is easier to control than standard loads of .38 Special.

The only knock against the .32 Magnum is that ammo has lately been devilishly hard to find. I think the reason is that there's simply more money to be made selling 9mm for 30-40 cents per round than .32 Magnum for a dollar a round. However, I noticed that my local stores are now awash in 9mm and prices are steadily falling. I've already gotten one alert on Ammoseek that retailers are getting .32 Magnum back in stock, so I think it will become more plentiful fairly soon.

Both .32 Long and .327 Magnum are available, though the latter is more expensive than the former. This is pretty similar to the .38/.357 dynamic.

One final note: yes, as Chris Baker has noted, revolvers chambered for .32 Magnum and .327 Magnum have the capability to handle .32 ACP ammunition. He thinks it's a bad idea, and he makes some good points. However, he also used a Ruger LCR in .327 Magnum, which has a chamber length 1/8 inch longer than my Undercoverette. For whatever reason, I didn't run into any of his problems. If you look at the holes closest to the Undercoverette in my target photo, you see fair group for 8 yards and all holes are clean. The mess below was caused by bullet splash from a nearby steel plate. The Fiocchi ammo I used had normal primer strikes and ejected easily.

So having disagreed with Baker, I'm going to offer three different reasons for keeping .32 ACP out of your revolver. First, even if it is accurate and doesn't tumble, it still has a different point of aim, which complicates your practice session by introducing a different sight picture. Second, there's the risk that someone will load it into Grandad's .32 Long revolver, which absolutely cannot handle its pressure. Finally, it's ballistic performance has to be severely degraded by the chamber mismatch (it is very short compared to the other cartridges), and it's not like .32 ACP is a world-beater to begin with.

Getting back to the Undercoverette, should .32 Magnum ammo come into wider availability, I would seriously consider making it my baseline carry piece. Yes, I like it that much.

Great write-up, AHL! Thank you!

Next up, our pal JerseyDevilRider sends us a range report with his .308.

Tis is at the farm firing my Mossberg .308. First picture is the target. We started with an 8 1/2 by 11 and didn't hit crap. Hitting the dirt mound way high and on the left. I knew I had an issue but didn't expect to be that bad. My shooting bud's stepdad helped zero it with an in the barrel laser, but we were limited to a garage due to weather. So we switched to the back of one of those ICE targets used on the pistol range. I drew a little blue dot in the center. We took turns to eliminate my lack of skill as the problem. My bud shot for years. Our first turns were all high and right. You can see the grouping. Then you can see the changes as we stepped down the scope. Once we get it about in line we moved it left. We ended up dead center. It was actually pretty cool to do the adjustments and see the results. My first time.

Great job and nice shooting. Thanks for sending this in!

Next, our pal hrothgar sends a range report zeroing a new AR-15.

hrothgar 1 120521 scaled.jpg

In a futile attempt to become even more well known to the authorities, I let blaster convince me to send you this picture. This is the PSA blemished AR-15 kit I recently purchased. It is probably impossible to see in the photo but the only identifiable blemish I could find was a slight color differential around the trigger housing pin. One trip to the range and you'd probably see more "damage". So right now, it is basically an out of the box AR with a pretty good shot group using only factory iron sights. Blaster and I both had weapons we wanted to zero so we did the seated bench rest patterns and corrected based on those. What I found interesting was that the full magazines were fired from a standing position, and I now think that for shorter range work, a measly 25 yards, it might behoove one to do the zeroing based on shot groups fired in the position you think will be actually used, i.e., in this case from a standing position. We did not have time to try this today, but I view it as a future experiment that I need to conduct.

Nice job, hrothgar! Glad to see you getting to the range and zeroing your new rifle! Regardless of the distance, the zero is the zero, and I always recommend it be done from a bench with a very solid setup.

******

Next, our pal I used to have a different nic sends a picture of a new rifle.

iuthadn 1 120521 new_rifle scaled.png

Still need sights and whatnot so no range time yet.

Very nice rifle! Please let us know how it shoots once you get it set up and take it to the range!

Next, our pal Blake sends a video of an unusual 1911 variant.

Finally, our pal redc1c4 sends along a great article on Chuck Connors.

There is a lot in the article I didn't know! Thanks redc1c4!

The lovely Mrs. Lloyd is very temperature sensitive, so she did not join me at the outdoor range in a secure, undisclosed location.

I've just noticed that she enjoys shooting full-sized .380s - she just killed it with a Femaru M37. In that larger frame, .380 is really mild.

I'm also sort of taking over the role of .32 geek here, so it was a natural progression.

65 Good evening gub threaders. That full auto 1911? I have heard of more than a couple of just plain worn out 1911's doing that on an Army pistol range.

Not select fire. Just boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom.

68 Hey Weasel, hey everybody else...
Yep, we did it. I married the love of my life...
Genuine Gun Thread romance and all... Quiet ceremony at a JP office in town. Then we changed and went chootin!
I brought a Webley air rifle, that had not been shot in years. It has some kind of cheapo peep sight, but it shot well enough. Then I tried a new to me Savage 187 semi auto 22 that came to me from an ette in Corsicana. Like my model 87, I call these "click clack" guns, or gill guns.
It shot bloody great!!
SiD continues improving her revolver shooting skills...I will let her give her report.
After THAT, we went out for a great steak dinner..
End of public reporting...

73 Went to the Crossroads of the West Phoenix Gun Show yesterday. I spotted a forlorn "parts revolver" in a display case for seventy-five bucks, and it followed me home. It is an FIE .22LR single-action Western-style six shooter. Frame is die-cast zinc, but barrel and cylinder are steel, and quite girthy.

Cylinder was sitting cockeyed in the frame, and the hammer would not advance it. Numrich has an exploded drawing on their site, so with that as a guide, I began taking it apart. Right away, some things became clear. The "axle" upon which the cylinder spins, called the "base pin" in the Numrich drawing, had been replaced by a nylon cleaning jag from a rifle cleaning kit. I kid you not. Furthermore, the center bore in the cylinder is 15/64", but the matching holes in the frame were smaller, at 7/32". (more to follow)

74 Bought a Glock 43X last month and have been taking it to the range the last few weeks. Nice grip length that fits my hands very well, and I shoot it better than any other 9mm that I own.

Was a bit concerned about magazine capacity it being only 10+1 rounds and my usual Sig P365 EDC gun has 12+1 capacity but then I found the Shield Arms 15 round magazines for the Glock 43X. Bought 6 of them on sale and the metal magazine release button and installed it. Magazines drop out with zero issues.

One FTF out of 60 rounds so far and that might have been me. Marked that magazine and will use the others for another 200 rounds or so to see what happens, but so far I am very pleased with the gun and the magazines. 15+1 rounds in a Glock platform that is easy to conceal and I shoot it better than any other 9mm pistol I own.

87 A timely thread. No range this week but this time...cleaning.

I must confess that I am not a religious gun cleaner. Kinda more like a Christmas and Easter cleaner. But it is a necessary thing, so I decided I should teach sra blaster how starting with her P365. It disassembles into 4 easy parts, but the takedown lever is quite stiff. Need a lot more finger or thumb strength than I think most owners of the P365 have available.

Broke out my Hoppes gun cleaning kit with, yes, #9 bore cleaner. Her pistol has about 3-400 rounds through it and this was the first time cleaning it. It wasn't too bad but it definitely left a lot of black residue on the cleaning towels.

Range report,
Mark brought a couple pistols he hasn't shot in a while. One was a .22 break action (?) revolver and the other was a Sig, I think, with a red dot. The revolver was fun, but had some issues with the hammer not striking properly.

I took the time to appreciate my Ruger Mark IV even more.

Then did some shooting with my G42. Did much better than the last time I shot it. I think not having three cups of coffee before range time made a big difference.

Also did some raise and shoot drills with the PPQ. Doing pretty well with it. I feel pretty confident I could hit what I'm aiming at with this pistol.

Good day at the range. And best of all was seeing my friend Mark. A shooting buddy is worth his (or her) weight in gold.

I agree with Weasel completely, any zeroing should be done with a solid bench rest and a comfortable shooting position; however, I was not able to achieve either of those at the range I used. Nonetheless, the eventual shot groups I achieved were completely acceptable (for me at least).
Next time, I will endeavor to establish an optimal zeroing position! And many thanks to blaster for his able assistance in the AR zeroing procedure!

110 31 I've decided that I don't want a holster. What I would like instead, is some sort of conceal carry bag, with a cross body strap.

Posted by: Honda
-------------------

There are a lot of off-body carry options, but off-body carry has its caveats. First, it's always going to be slower, every time. That second or so might be the difference. Second, you have to be 100% vigilant about the bag. No going into a restaurant and hanging your bag on the chair, none of that. It has to stay on you 100% of the time, because the most common petty theft crime is bag snatching. Third, the strap is always an issue. A regular strap can be easily cut and a thief runs away with your bag (and gun) before you know what hit you. Again, very common. But, if you go with one of the "steel reinforced" straps, it can't be cut - but you've gone ahead and wrapped a convenient steel cable around your neck for a bad guy to utilize. On-body carry is always better when possible. CCW is a lifestyle choice, and sometimes you have to compromise what you like for what works better.

I shot the same 2 S&W revolvers that I've been enjoying so much lately, a .22 and a .38 Special. I shoot the .38 better than anything else so far. I've become a big fan of revolvers now that I am more comfortable with them. No brass in the brassiere! One of my goals is to practice shooting the .22 double action more often.

Jesse kicked ass with a new-to-him .22 rifle!

Soon I think it will be time to pick up the P365 again and see if I still can't hit anything.

Many thanks to Weasel and all the Horde for your support of Jesse and me as we start our journey together. Y'all is family. We hope to see everybody at the CO Morondezvous and maybe some of you can scoot up the road a bit to Wyoming afterwards, if it's not blizzarding.

114 I can only echo AH Lloyd's praise for the 32 magnum and revolvers for it. Since my interest with it is targets not SD, I prefer a longer barrel piece. The gold standard for targets in 32 long is probably the S and W 32 Masterpiece (I have the 22lr and 38 special versions. They are beyond superb.) Unfortunately, the 32 long version was made from unobtainium.

32 caliber long and magnum ammo may not be thick upon the ground but it can be found. When components become available, it is also inexpensive and easy to handload.

You will need some mags, a rear sight, and a sling, add in your FFL fee and you have a full kit for under $500.

I see those lowers at $125 and I am trying not to just buy a whole crate of them.

You're not wanting to use it for other things? That would seem to make the carry somewhat obvious.

But I've seen around some over-one-shoulder bags with velcro in them for attaching a holster (or other velcro-y stuff). I got one with 300 rounds of 5.56 or something a year and a half ago as a package deal. (That bag is my Get Home bag in the car now, with a trauma kit, multi-tool, flashlight, ponchos, emergency blanket, etc., in it.)

Even with the bag, though, you're going to want a holster. You don't want your carry weapon just flopping around inside there, where you have no idea exactly where it's pointed, where the trigger is when you reach for it, and son.

144 My range report this week is real-world application. I got a nice fat doe on Tuesday evening (and had delicious pan-fried deer heart for lunch on Wednesday). I was really happy to get this deer because of the rifle I used. It's a Model 70 Winchester in .30-06. I have other Model 70s, a .270 and a 7mm Mauser, but this one is both old and new to me. It was my grandfather's rifle, he won it in a raffle in the late 50's/early 60's. He used it a few years and gave it to my Dad, who used it until a few years ago (he now prefers to use the same 7.65 Mauser he used when he was a kid), and he gave it to me. I haven't hunted regular rifle season in a few years, as I usually save my tags for muzzleloader season, but I wanted to get one with this rifle. Three generations of my family have now put venison on the table with it. So maybe it's just a doe, but it's one of the more memorable deer I've ever gotten.

151 Hmmm, checked primers on ammoseek and it looks that while availability has increased (Step 1), price erosion (Step 2) is, well, downwardly-sticky, as an economist might say.

So primers looking to still be 3-5 times "normal" (pre-March 2020) prices, which were around $30/1K, + or -.

Didn't even check powder.

I know that component availability and pricing are much better in brick/mortar world in many places across the country. I can only check online world.

Posted by: Eromero at December 05, 2021 07:43 PM

153 (continuing) So it was clear to me that the cylinder was not the original one to this pistol, although it seems to fit fine in other respects. So, I used my 15/64" drill bit, and turning it with a screwdriver, enlarged the base pin holes in the zinc frame. Not very hard to do, as zinc is soft. Then I used the drill bit as the base pin. Cylinder rotates freely, the front is nice and close to the forcing cone of the barrel, and it advances properly as the hammer is brought to full cock. Bringing the hammer to half-cock lines a chamber up to the extractor pin.

Now, my remaining problem was that the cylinder did not lock up properly. The little catch that is supposed to engage the slots near the rear of the cylinder was there all right, but not engaging. This part is called the "bolt" on the Numrich drawing. The grip and trigger guard casting comes off the frame upon removing 5 screws, so I took it off. With that off, one screw removes the forked leaf spring that acts on both the bolt and the trigger, and one further screw is the pivot pin for both bolt and trigger, so I removed them. The "bolt" is a little doodad made of folded-over spring steel, (continued)

I've got the black one, fourth from the left. Looks like it's the same as the green one that is first on the left. I've had it for a year or so now and use it when it's the only decent option, which it occasionally is. Fits my P365XL daily carry pistol with the 15 round magazine fine, and can handle medium frame pistols, too.

Also good place to make sure you've got a spare pipe, tobacco, and lighter, so win-win.

I think that a lot of online outfits had to buy whatever they could get, while brick and mortar stores had other product they could move (accessories) to stay in business.

As a result, the online vendors are captive to the higher prices they paid while brick and mortar can let prices drift down because they are also selling firearms at a high rate.

186 Hrothgar,
My two cents: I agree w/ Weasel. Zero the rifle off a rest first for the irons, then w/ any optic you wish to use. Standing adds too many variables to the equation. The Colt 6920 SOCOM on last week's thread produced overlapping holes w/ five shot groups at 20 yards from a rest (packed GI duffel bag). Firing from a standing position really spread out the shot groups. I think you need to make sure your rifle is dead on first before throwing complications from human factors into the mix.

192 I have several Colt and other 32 S&W Long revolvers and as it is said, you can use 32 S&W for pipsqueak loads if you can find it.

A 32 H&R Magnum is a decent modern self defense compromise and as said, you can load the older 32 shorts and 32 longs. Be careful though on buying 32 S&W Long wadcutters if you want light loads. Those, especially the Euro made ones, are designed for extremely accurate semi-auto target pistols that run for a bunch of bucks. And those are not like the powder puff 38 Special wadcutters but are fully at the max pressure for 32 Long. Decent self defense loads btw and you can buy Buffalo Bore hardcast flat points or wadcutters that are specifically designed to be fired in solid frame 32 SW Long revolvers made by Colt, S&W or modern ones like the 32 H&R or 327 Magnum, etc.--do not try to fire them in old break open actions as the pressure.

There is also the older cowboy cartridge, the 32-20 which is about the same as the 32 HR in effect. You can find those in S&W K Frames (first cartridge for the Hand Ejector actually) or Colts.

195 My evangelism on reloading hasn't stopped due to the component scarcity. As before, I counsel people who think they might reload in the future to 1) save their brass, starting yesterday 2) buy a few reloading manuals, and read 'em 3) set up vigilant overwatch on local gun forums, bulletin boards at ranges, etc., for private sales of reloading equipment and components (the latter, these days, obviously not as inexpensive, and they're snapped up instantly) 4) accumulate whatever they can, no rush.

This is for shooters at the range where I am an RO. Many newbies are aware of it, and curious.

USPSA is a lot more wide open than IDPA, as are the guns that are allowed.

Drawing from concealment is usually a requirement with IDPA. Not so much with USPSA.

A little careful squeezing with pliers made it fit just right. With the gun reassembled, the cylinder now rotates as the hammer is drawn back, and locks up once a cartridge is under the hammer. I pried the bullet out of a .22LR cartridge, dumped the powder, and pulled the trigger on an empty case. The primer popped nicely. I'm pretty sure if I loaded it up with live rounds, it would shoot OK.

Next step is make make a proper base pin and retainer for same, and to make a set of grips. Then I should be able to terrorize empty beer cans with the best of them.

I had purchased a pack of 4 batteries for 6 bucks or something on AMZN a while back and finally got a round tuit. While looking up how to change the battery it seems that Crimson Trace will give you new batteries for free for life. You have to sign up on their website, but, yeah, that's it. Free.

214 USPSA and IDPA matches I have issues with, but it's academic since the closest ones are a long ass-haul away. The hybrid-ish action handgun matches that are much closer have become less interesting (lower round count, no Rube Goldberg interactive moving targets, etc).

Always practice weak hand-only - and strong-hand only - with handguns. Not nearly enough, as my shooting with both leaves much to be desired. But as always I'm interested in minute-of-steel plate @ 10-15 yds, not bullseye stuff.

217 Range report: went to ESS today and last Sunday trying to zero another AR with a red dot. Last Sunday was rough because I didn't notice the buffer tube was loose so the shots were all over the place. Today was better and I was able to get something resembling groupings but still not as good as the other AR. The rifle might not like 55gr but I'm going to try an accuwedge to tighten up the slop and see if that helps.

On the pistola side of things, still no joy on recoil mitigation. The 92FS is doing it's part but I'm beginning to suspect that part of the reason my grip breaks on recoil is that I subconsciously loosen up on the trigger pull. Going to have to do some dry fire to see if that's the case.

219 203 on IDPA v. USPSA. IDPA was developed as a split from USPSA and is more self defense oriented which is why cover and stages differ a bit from USPSA.

IDPA stages usually result in a much lower round count as well so if you are pinching pennies on ammo and supplies like holsters, firearms, etc, IDPA is more friendly to the wallet.

Competing in either will improve your shooting but like a lot of other competitions, you can spend to the moon by traveling and competing or use it as a learning exercise at the local level.

------------------------------

A 92FS is a big potato-grip gun. It may simply be that it's too large for your hands. I know it's too large for mine. Handgun fit is often ignored but incredibly important.

Also, make sure you're following through and holding the trigger back for a second after each shot. Slapping the trigger can cause you to lose your grip, which makes recoil mitigation harder, which makes you tend to slap the trigger. Vicious cycle. Take a few slow shots and consciously hold the trigger back just long enough to say "follow through" to yourself. It might also help to try shooting to reset instead of letting the trigger the whole way out, if you're not doing that already. A large gun with a long pull like the 92FS really becomes a lemon squeezer if you let the trigger out to the full travel length.

I bought a Ruger Mk III that was marked as a blem. When I inspected it, I thought there was a spot that wasn't blued, probably because it wasn't clean when it was treated. Figured for 75 - 100 bucks, I could live with that. Got it home and found that the white spot was a flake of Styrofoam from the box tray. Never found any other issue with it.

Maybe there's a better way of phrasing the ask. Also, I'll admit I didn't think about the theft aspect so thank you for that.

Also the Crocs comment cracked me. I can assure you, that will never be a problem.

1. Castle nut staking is the way to go for this reason. A big honkin' flathead will work in a pinch but a pointed punch is usually easier, especially if you can automatic center punch where you want it first. Remember a lot of factory 55gr is only good for 2-3 MOA.

2. 70% grip from the support hand, 30% from the firing hand. Pull towards you with the support hand while pushing out with the firing hand, focusing on keeping your firing hand immobile beyond pressing the trigger.

I've shot this and it's pretty neat.

Lots of effective .32 options to choose from and some are quite inexpensive.

Regrettably, .32-20 ammo does not fall into that category.

For anyone who just doesn't want to shoot publicly or competitively, the NRA Marksmanship Program is worth checking out. I've been sore at the NRA for a while, but this program is still good. It's a directed shooting program that you can do on your own, using specific targets and specific courses of fire. It gives you something to actually "do" at the range instead of just shooting that same bullseye target over and over. Plus, you can submit your scores and get certificates and medals or whatever. If I'd found it when I was a kid, I'd probably look like a North Korean general by now. It's a fun program and teaches some valuable stuff.

277 Oh, this has been an interesting week. I have told you we bought some acreage in Florida earlier this year. We can't move there for a while yet and we had some thoughts of developing a "Prepper Acres" on the front 40. That takes money, so that isn't going to happen for a while yet either.

Our real estate agent called this week and said hey you interested in selling? Some developers are in the area and then he mentioned a really, really big number. We said, well, no, we don't (painful to say because the number was, did I mention, big?), but our plan has always been to sell off that front 40... So he came up with a number not quite as big but, most important, a whole lot more than we paid for the whole thing.

So lots of prayer going on about this right now.

Yep. Also bought my range membership, entries in several gun raffles for good causes, and numerous shootin' supplies that same way. And then I royally screwed the pooch by taking my cellphone to the range with me. Pretty sure I'm on the radar already.

There are risks to everything we do. Does the risk of not training to be ready for an eventuality I hope never happens (but want to be ready for nonetheless) outweigh the risk of Big Tech discovery? I've answered that for myself; everybody else needs to assess their risk profile and decide what makes sense for their use case.

289 Range report: Open land north of the Bee Line and Saguaro Lake.
Sister and BIL came over from Santa Barbara and brought some of their guns.
He had the 30 cal carbine that was given to him by his friends widow. General Motors Inland Div Aug 44 stamped on it. It had a '36' painted on the stock and a couple other markings. He wasn't willing to let me post a picture.
It shot perfectly and on target with the Korean Surplus we got for him last year.
Sister had a .32 semi auto. she did well with it.
You can tell they both shoot at a range regularly.
Wife hasn't shot her S&W .357 mag in years. She went mainly because of the visitors.
She used up most of the .38 I brought and said that she had no problems, liked shooting it, and didn't have any hand pain this morning. The hand pain is why she stopped shooting years ago. The Ruger bullnose .22 got a work out by her as well.
I enjoyed the BIL's 30 cal, Ruger, and the Kel-Tec sub 2000.
When I shot the Ruger the better half commented that I have improved! Guess all the time on the Gun Thread has helped!

Thanks Weasel and all the rest of you!

Ended up getting a nice WWI era Colt Police Positive for that reason recently. Old guns that fire obscure cartridges are generally cheaper because of ammo costs.

Only problem is that reloading those old shallow necked cartridges can be a pain if you don't use something like starline brass. PITA about like reloading 357 sig. It kept me from buying a Colt New Service in 38-40 at a decent price because I simply did not want another obscure cartridge to reload.

Colt Single Action Army (SAA) revolvers should only be loaded w/ five rounds. The chamber under the firing pin needs to be empty. Look closely at the gap between the rear of the cylinder and the frame on a Colt SAA. If the hammer is down on an empty cylinder, you can easily see the hammer mounted firing pin poking through its hole in the frame. If the firing pin rests on a loaded cartridge, any jolt (not just a drop) to the Colt SAA can cause the cartridge under the firing pin to go off. There's a specific procedure a Colt SAA user needs to follow to properly load the revolver so the hammer can be safely lowered on an empty chamber. Old West gunfighters knew this. Most people in the 21st century don't.

Last I heard, the pistol registry has more guns than the total population of the state. If your goal is to normalize gun ownership, than "doxxing" is a feature, not a bug.

Reason was it fit my hand poorly so control was suboptimal compared with the K Frame grip which is a pretty universal fit for most hands.

For shooting purposes, if you cannot line up your forearm bones with the finger on the trigger in a master firing grip, then you will shoot more poorly than if the handgun fits your hand. In addition, the Beretta is a double action/single action combo--for the most part, these are better shot revolver style than Glock style. Use the power crease of your trigger finger rather than the pad. You will get more control and are less likely to pull your shots due to trigger reach. This only works well though if the Beretta trigger fits your hand.

Glad you posted those precautionary 'rules' about gathering reloading tools and components whenever and wherever they are available. I try not to bring it up in every gun thread but with newcomers it should be mentioned frequently.

334 Regarding AR accuracy, and I'm assuming you're using a handguard that isn't directly attached to the barrel....
In my limited experience, barrel quality, barrel/upper receiver fit, and a quality trigger are the keys to building an accurate AR platform rifle. Money can get you the barrel and trigger, while spending a little extra time lapping the upper receiver face will ensure an even fit between the barrel extension and upper receiver. I also suggest adding a bit of Green Loctite to the barrel extension outer surface prior to installation. That'll help ensure the barrel doesn't wobble even if the fit is a bit loose.

335 Why?

Michigan has 750,000 concealed pistol licensees. that's around 10 percent of the adult population.

Last I heard, the pistol registry has more guns than the total population of the state. If your goal is to normalize gun ownership, than "doxxing" is a feature, not a bug.

336 JTB - I ask their level/kind of interest in reloading, the answer affects my spiel a bit. Mostly I try to demystify it for those who think it's some kind of difficult or highly technical undertaking, which it isn't, unless you're going high-end. I tell them "this too shall pass", WRT reloading components (well, I hope so, not sure about anything any more), meanwhile patient accumulation and education should proceed.

The app records it is not what you shoot at. The way they work is you have a white target on a stand. The phone sits in a position to see the target and then you essentially work the contrast until the screen is dark (the white part of the target blends in with the markings). There is a laser cartridge with a momentary switch and when you fire at the screen it is bright enough to overcome the contrast and then the software records the location and scores it.

355 Well, on more happy news, did get to the range yesterday. The Nurse wanted to try out some of my older, more neglected noisemakers, so I brought my H&R top break .22 and my SIG 320 with the Romeo One red dot mount.

POI on the SIG red dot seems to have drifted right but it was capable of very small groups. I just hate the trigger.

The H&R was not reliable, the .22 ammo which is very reliable (for .22) in my automatics had failures about 1/3 of the time. Not as much fun to shoot but still had a great time at the range.

358 I went into 32 SW Long revolvers during the last couple of years simply because they were affordable at the time, easy to handload with brass life about like 38 Special (almost forever), cheap bullets, mild recoil, and easily reloadable cases unlike 22 LR.

There are two cartridges that are almost ubiquitous among reloaders--the 38 Special and the 45 ACP. Both are superb cartridges for reloading with long brass life, easy to resize, no special quirks such as tapering, and affordable bullets. The 32 revolver cartridges such as 32 SW long and the 32 H&R belong to that list as well.

Absolutely! Taking care to accumulate components when the panic passes allowed me to be independent of the current prices. Even then, the search goes on, mostly for friends who want to start reloading. Besides, the 'hunt' for tool and component bargains is fun in itself. Finding that Lee 12 gauge loader kit, the whack-a-mole version, after years of looking was damn satisfying. Getting it for about five dollars was frosting on the cake.

is it good to have state gun registry info distributed via the internets by newspapers in map form?

that it has not been repeated does not mean that it could not be .

that it has not been repeated by a newspaper does not mean that some tech guy could not buy out some firearm training device and the somehow doxx the users.

That is rare for a 22 LR revolver--have you checked the headspace on it recently? It is possible endshake may be cushioning the blow from the firing pin or the firing pin has been damaged.

The other possibility is built up grunge in the action that is slowing the hammer down a bit before hitting the rim or an out of spec hammer spring.

I got a transition model 32 New Police/Police Positive (One is stamped on one side of the barrel and the other logo on the opposite side) for about two franklins about three years ago while at the gunsmith for some other business. Later, after finding firing it fun, I got a Rossi snubbie in that caliber (Model 69) for a bit less than that that was practically brand new.

Grab that one while dog walking as coyotes appear around our neighborhood now and again. That one I feel comfortable in firing the Buffalo Bore self defense ammo. Colts are a real PITA to fix if they get out of time and so I treat antique 100 year plus guns gently. The 32-20 was a recent acquisition from a firearms liquidation sale.

395 380 MAE, any endshake in the revolver? That can also be the cause of irregular firing. Essentially when the hammer firing pin hits the round, the revolver cylinder in a revolver with excessive endshakes ends up moving with the hit enough to cushion the fp blow so the primer does not go off.

Lock the empty revolver cylinder up and put the revolver at full cock (don't point at the cinematographer while doing it) try to move the cylinder back and forth while at full lockup. If the cylinder moves enough back and forth, then you have excessive endshake. Each revolver has its own specs for when that exists. Away from my reference manuals but you might be able to find the specs online in a forum.

If the hammer spring is replaced and it is still irregular in firing, then look at endshake as a possibility. Also sometimes people cut the hammer spring to lighten trigger pull so that can also replicate irregular ignition of primers.

397 I have an H&R .32 top-break pocket hammerless in .32 S&W short. I am lucky to get two rounds to fire out of five. There is a little fore-and-aft slop in the cylinder, and this may be sapping force from the firing pin strike.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon

That be called endshake in gunsmithing terms. It can also be complicated by firing pin wear over the decades.

Another thought: Just because ammo performs well in one platform, that doesn't mean it will perform well in another.

I've noticed - especially with vintage guns - that they can be REALLY particular about what they run well on. So your "otherwise solid" ammo might have the secret sauce to suck in that particular revolver.

Depends on whether H&R used SW mechanism or not. Strain screws are a feature on the Hand Ejector and later std. Smith double actions. The 32 H&R breakopen don't apparently use one that I can see in online schematics but my reference manuals are in another state right now. Dunno if the 22 LR is the same.

There are lots of examples for weapons that just hate *that manufacturer* but otherwise run fine.

Rather than going to a gunsmith or taking a master class in Vintage Pistol Repair, it might be easier to just try different ammo types.

I don't think a top break has a crane. Isn't that a feature of guns with a swing-out cylinder? This is a top break 5-shooter, circa 1896, with auto-eject. As the barrel is tipped up, a cam at the hinge pushes up a "spider" that lifts all 5 cases out of the cylinder. Nifty.

Brass life in semi autos is more limited anyway by the poor brass being roughly loaded and ejected.

I'll pitch in a vote for the LASR software. It's good stuff. We have a small, cheap Windows tablet running the LASR software, and we use it for simulator classes (using SIRT pistols from NLT). We mostly use it for simulator classes, generally absolute newbies who aren't yet sure if they want to buy a handgun, but want a low-pressure way of trying it out. I use it on my own as well - it's great for showing point of impact as well as holster-to-target times. Very versatile software.

MAE, apparently H&R on your model has a plastic head guide assembly on the spring which could be your issue if it has cracked or deteriorated from age. Numrich aka Gun Parts Corp. has a complete replacement spring and guide for 30 bucks. Must be a common issue as they also sell a replacement pack of 6 for 72.

On that particular design, you have a firing pin spring and an in frame firing pin apparently. The FP spring could be gunked up. To remove the fp and the spring, you will have to take out the firing pin retaining pin on the side of the frame. Might be able to spray out the gunk with gunscrub or something like that without removal.

Alternative course of action: drench it with Break Free CLP. Like saturate it. Let it sit, and then when you go to the range, watch a brown sludge wash out of the weapon.

Can't tell you how many times that worked for me.

That would be the "tit" in the center of the ejector spider, right? That piece does look a little mushroomed and pitted, alright. It appears to be all one piece with the spider. I will check the Numrich drawing. I cannot see "stretching" it, but I might be able to give it a tiny zap with the MIG welder, and then dress it to shape with a Dremel tool.

513 Greetings:

Many may find this pet peevish, but can't we all agree that a "machine-gun" should require belt-fed ammunition as opposed to magazine fed.

An important element in suppressive fire is that one can fire uninterruptedly for longer than one's opponents. Belt fed ammo promotes that.

I would describe that pistol as fully automatic.

What I might try is to epoxy a thin disc of steel shim stock into the divot where the pin seats. This would have the same effect as lengthening the pin, but would be reversible.

518 452 You can resize with the 308 Win die just fine for a 7.62x51, However, if you are firing reloads in a semi auto, I recommend using a small base resizing die--it works the brass more but you do not worry about it chambering.

Brass life in semi autos is more limited anyway by the poor brass being roughly loaded and ejected.
