Turks have been weird for a while. Maybe anti- dog sentiment is more an Arab thing? I dunno. Turkey is considered part of Europe for State posts, so maybe they have more of a European outlook on dogs. Several families, including us, had dogs poisoned in Jordan, which is fairly westernized. But no problems in the Gulf, for some reason. I guess it depends on the individual. Dogs are considered haram, or forbidden/unclean, because according to a Hadith, the PBUHMO didn't like dogs. You'd think so but in they are incredibly agile swimmers and their roads are endlessly wide and deep. We see them when we are out fishing in the gulf stream and they will ride the bow wave of the boat. They come right up next to it and you think they are going to hit and the next thing you know the disappear under the surface and pop up on the other side of the boat and then do a little tail walk to show off. Update on gamestop saga:
Everybody in wall street and the SEC are corrupt, for starters--the past year has demonstrated this. So there was a superstonk campaign to register your GME shares DIRECTLY in your name, so the bad guys have no ammo to short stocks. Fidelity stepped up to quickly help everyone switch to Compushare (direct register the shares you hold) Everyone loved Fidelity, the only honest broker! Until yesterday, when the redditors discovered Fidelity plotted with the hedge funds to "lend" their new crop of shares so the hedge funds could short 11 million shares and drive the price down. So now Fidelity is reaping what they sowed. Posted by: artemis at December 01, 2021 08:07 PM (AwPyG) 176

My first 2 cats were great at the vet's office. Toonses, the street-fightin' tabby who made me a deal I couldn't refuse, had to go in for an infected abscess and was held overnight. They told me he was great - really talkative and interactive, making new friends, etc. Then Dorkie Dork didn't *like* being at the vet, but I could take her in a sling pouch and she was very sweet so she loved the affection the staff would give her. I haven't taken Prettygirl in yet - this girl is a world-champion athlete and she'll probably never get sick. In fact, she leaped into my lap just now and gave me the blinks.

I am no expert, but if you go to superstonk (a subthread of reddit--don't be scared off, though) there's a lot of very smart people, kind of like here at ace's. In theory, the hedge funds are desperate because they've been caught with their pants down on the GME short, and once they start collapsing, its a domino effect. Then the SEC and the DTCC is supposed to cover the stockholder's losses, but if they can't, down goes the banks and then the fed. so, we'll see. It's very clear there's shenanigans going on, and the business media is covering for it. Posted by: artemis at December 01, 2021 08:19 PM (AwPyG) 225

The general consensus is the hedge funds pick a target that could compete with Amazon, and short it so it is destroyed. Radio Shack, Toys R us, Sears, Gamestop. But there have always been shenanigans going on. This is nothing new. What's new is that, at least in Gamestop, the short interest exceeded the float. That's illegal as hell. While ice fishing with my nephew at Salmon Reservoir, an humungous raptor swooped down between us from behind and snagged the biggest fish we had caught, about 25 inches. Craziest thing I've ever witnessed. It was part of a mating pair, and we soon realized that we could toss a fish on the ice about ten feet away and they would swoop down and snag it, but only if you were looking away. I don't speak finance Posted by: Kindltot at December 01, 2021 08:25 PM (ZMraq) To sell short, you need to have a share in hand you will buy in the future at your low price. The owner can't 'loan' that share to anyone else at the same time. In the frauds, there were all sorts of tricks to use one share multiple times for short deals, and cash in when the company collapsed. But when the price goes up, the short fellow has to pay the holder the current price and take the stock, then and there. The SEC did a lot to keep that from biting hard at the sharks, but enough of them felt a bite at having to pay back losses. Posted by: Oldcat at December 01, 2021 08:33 PM (eoQWY) 267

A lot of brokers won't let you transfer your shares to Compushare. I know Etoro in Europe won't--and it's difficult to transfer IRA and 401k shares to compushares. So Fidelity's said, transfer the shares to us, as your new broker, and we'll take care of you! Promise!
(there's an SEC rule that the old broker has to transfer to the new broker within 3 days. Clarification: Compushare is not a broker, it's your agent, so that rule doesn't apply to them.) So fidelity got an avalanche of transferred shares on the idea that they would then transfer to compushare. But it was a ploy to use the new pool of GME shares so the hedge funds could manipulate the market and lower the price. (They're trying to get the redditors to sell, so that they don't have to cover. Speculation that there's a billion synthetic shares out there) So the redditors figured this out, and now Fidelity is a bloodbath. Posted by: artemis at December 01, 2021 08:34 PM (AwPyG) 274

That depends. Sometimes people who have nice rolodex start up a company and get high net worth people their family knew involved, putting in capital and loaning them funds, but they have zero business sense. Eventually, they need to give way to professional management. But that is something they are less prone to do...they'd rather ask Uncle Bob or Uncle Bob's 80 year-old friend who used to run a company 20 years ago but that now is long since been under some other persons' ownership...and his advice is universally shit. My snap-on set was $235, its a smaller 9 piece set, and that was 25 years ago. they sit unused in the drawer, because right around that time another mechanic friend of mine was ranting about this brand K-mart sold called Benchtop, and they looked like an exact copy of the older snap-on wrenches. They were $20 for a 10 piece set, and I bought them just to prove to my friend that I would disintegrate $20 Taiwan wrenches. The joke was on me. Every harley I built in the last 25 years was with those wrenches, and they look like the day I got them, and I do think the factory that made them is probably the same dudes who make the Icon, which I think is just a slightly better finished upper scale version of the pittsburg. I'm annoyed with the moves being made in the cordless arena. Nothing is compatible. And finding batteries for the older stuff is damn near impossible.

* I've moved to Ridgid (Home Depot house brand) 18V cordless tools and never looked back. Full lifetime warranty on everything, even the batteries. You have to register within 90 days after purchase or it's three years IIRC. One died a couple of years ago and I called, read off the serial number, and they had a new one at the house two days later. Sold. Yogurt was always a big part of my strategery when spending time & eating in parts of the world with exciting food sanitation conditions (which I did a fair amount). It probably helped. I'd prep by having a lot of yogurt in the few days before travel.
Parts of the Caucasus were great because they had fantastic (cuz fresh, local) yogurt for sale at roadside stands. Still remember some yogurt, and lamb kebabs, at one little farm in Azerbaijan. Amazing. Posted by: rhomboid at December 01, 2021 09:47 PM (OTzUX) 517

** And unless it's a really demanding high-torque job like a hammer drill or the like (and those exist, just not for most homeowners' budgets) the battery powered stuff makes the most sense for efficiency. I still keep corded tools in case I have something serious to do, though. I think it's that usual rule they talk about: the first generation builds it and the second generation fritters it away
I think the conventional number is three: Rags to Riches to Rags in three generations. The second generation has seen some of the work involved and has a connection to the first. By the time the third generation takes charge, that connection is lost. Department stores such as K-Mart and Montgomery Ward would sell tools with their brand name on them, probably trying to compete with Sears who did the same thing. Another company would make the tools, of course. You can still find old compressors and bench grinders on ebay with the Montgomery Ward or K-Mart brand on them. Posted by: rhomboid at December 01, 2021 09:42 PM (OTzUX) No, not like gunsmith screw drivers. I have those too. I'm talking a regular old philips head screw driver. The story goes like this- back in the 90's I had set up in the middle bay of my friend's car repair place. He was having health problems and asked If I could work out of there and keep an eye on the place for him. I was doing one of those handlebar controls and I was cursing because every screw driver I grabbed was slipping and burning out the screw. The car mechanic there comes walking over, and hands me a snap-on screw driver with a smirk on his face. I was like ok Mr snap-on. I grabbed the screw driver, stuck it in the screw head, and *POP*, it breaks free and comes right out. A week later I'm doing another set, and same shit, screw drivers fucking with me. I ask the mechanic for that screw driver and *POP* out it comes. That was it, I was convinced. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at December 01, 2021 09:50 PM (VwHCD) 524
Battery tools are like printers and ink.
They sell the tool reletively cheap then stick you with the battery. Ryobi and Homely Depot will run specials. It's best to shop, even your local store online, in the Ryobi department. It takes time and foo because they sell different combinations. Just because you've seen it one way doesn't mean it won't be offered another. And if you go 18v the batteries are interchangeable on all tools. Posted by: Braenyard at December 01, 2021 09:50 PM (iam1O) 525

Mag na Tip is the brand of screwdriver bits that Brownell's sells and last time I checked is still made in the USA. It does have the hollowground bits but also each is carefully hardened so that the bits snap rather than twist in order to keep from marring the screws. Wheeler has some China sourced bits that look similar but twist under too much torque. A lot of Brownell's tools for gunsmithing are still made and sourced in the US.
Old Chapman screwdriver bit sets were also made in US formerly but now in China and Chapman has a pretty neat mini ratchet for the bits which gives you a bit more torque if you need it than a straight handle. Grace still makes punches, screwdrivers, etc. in the US but its screwdrivers have wooden handles instead of replaceable bit holders. Wood handles are not as slick as plastic etc. and not being round but square with rounded corners also helps with holding the screwdriver steady. Chinese sourcing of files is my biggest pita so I buy old files and recondition them. Posted by: whig at December 01, 2021 09:52 PM (9hXN1) 533

When they all went under was it Sears that bought K-Mart or the other way around?
Posted by: dartist Canadian hedge fund manager (Eddie Lampert) bought out Sears, then bought out K-Mart in bankruptcy and merged them. Pretty much devastated Sears subsequently. However, in truth, Sears rise and fall is also associated with going all in the mall craze which began to die at the same time that online sales were beginning to catch fire. Most firms that relied on malls to sell their goods are getting kinda sickly financially. Posted by: whig at December 01, 2021 09:55 PM (9hXN1) 539

whig, that's it - MagnaTips from Brownell's. Great set.
And I do try to limit myself to made-in-USA when buying tools (very limited buying, mind you). For quality and other reasons. Of course if I find oil or gas in the backyard, I can consider German- or Japanese-made. So he decided to go into the eastern European countries, find an abandoned business that the government used to run, buy it, train a bunch of people how to run a manufacturing business, get his money back, and then go off to find the next one.
