Subversive Fun: Defying The “Be Like Me” Narcissists

A few years ago, Ace wrote a piece about narcissistic lefties and their “Why can’t you be more like me” intolerance. (Remember - don’t comment on old threads.) That post hit a nerve with me, as it was published not too long after I left the employment of a blue-city startup company run by “be like me” narcissists.

The young company was struggling, and I was recruited and hired in a finance capacity to try to help turn it around. (It ultimately went out of business. Shocker.) Of course, the President and the CEO were hopelessly distracted by every idiotic new-age management gimmick, and the employees wasted most of their time on peer coaching, team building games, accountability training, breakthrough communication, goal setting, etc. (My goals included “Embrace the Uncomfortable” and “Kickassery.”

The CEO and the President wore jeans and sneakers, and by stressing “no dress code” what they really meant was “Dress like me in jeans and sneakers.” I didn’t. I wore dress slacks, loafers, and a button down every day. This annoyed them greatly, and the President had several conversations with me about how I was dressing. Below is a compendium of how our conversations went.

PRESIDENT: We have no dress code here. People can wear whatever they prefer.

ME: That’s great.

PRESIDENT: So, just about everyone chooses to wear jeans and sneakers.

ME: That’s great.

PRESIDENT: So you can wear jeans and sneakers if you’d prefer.

ME: Thanks, but I prefer not to.

PRESIDENT: OK. Fine. But you don’t have to wear slacks and loafers. You can wear whatever you find most comfortable.

ME: I find slacks and loafers most comfortable when I’m sitting at a desk.

PRESIDENT: Well, most employees find jeans and sneakers to be the most comfortable.

ME: I don’t. Do you want me to wear jeans and sneakers?

PRESIDENT: You can wear whatever you want.

ME: I want to wear a collared shirt, slacks and loafers.

PRESIDENT: OK, but many employees find that their wardrobe makes a personal statement.

ME: So does mine.

PRESIDENT: What is your statement?

ME: That I prefer to wear slacks, a collared shirt, and loafers when I work.

PRESIDENT: Don’t you want to make an original statement?

ME: Wearing jeans and sneakers to match my co-workers would state that I am actually unoriginal, and that I am simply complying with the company dress code.

PRESIDENT: But we don’t have a dress code! In fact, many employees wear shirts with an ironic message. Our culture stresses individuality.

ME: Would it be ironic if I wore a suit and tie?

PRESIDENT: It would look like you work at a place with a dress code and that’s what’s so great about us – we don’t have a dress code!

ME: It sure sounds like there is a dress code. But if there is not one, then I prefer to wear a collared shirt, slacks, and loafers.

PRESIDENT: When we take a group picture for our next press release, will you at least wear jeans, sneakers, and our company t-shirt for that one photo shoot?

ME: Of course. I’ll wear whatever you tell me to wear, any time you request that I do so.

PRESIDENT: You know, we often break into spontaneous fun and play activities which spill outside. Wearing jeans and sneakers allows employees to switch gears without having to change.

ME: That’s OK. I don’t want to play games or roughhouse outside. I want to work.

PRESIDENT: One thing that employees appreciate about us not having a dress code is that they don’t have to shop for work clothes. They can wear whatever is in their closet.

ME: I have a closet full of slacks and shirts but only two pairs of jeans. If you want me to wear jeans every day then I need to go shopping for new work clothes.

PRESIDENT: Does it bother you that just about all the other employees choose to wear jeans?

ME: No. Does it bother the other employees that I don’t wear jeans?

PRESIDENT: Some people here feel that your wardrobe makes a judgmental statement about how others dress. Do you feel we should have a more professional dress code here?

ME: No. You just need to be honest about the dress code you are trying to enforce on me.

8 The (almost always vapid, and ignorant) narcissism of so many Americans, especially the younger and more formally "educated", is really stunning.

Chicken/egg, whether things like social media and smart phones were contributors/outgrowths of all this. Certainly there have to be multiple causes, including "culture" at the young family level (participation trophies, paranoia about safety, etc).

The imbecilic moral narcissism of both younger and older, mostly an urban/coastal/suburban/"educated" pathology, is outright destructive. It's the sort of ignorant, unserious, irresponsible, child-like mentality that can be manipulated by "children in cages".

And I'm talking about a major, in some contexts controlling, element in American public life. It's an infuriating catastrophe.

21 Yeah, my boss's boss introduced himself by telling us how he's different from those OTHER bosses bc he wears jeans. It was a big red flag to me, especially because I like to have a very feminine presentation, and the kind of person who thinks wearing jeans to the office is some kind of Big Statement about Who They Are (instead of just wearing jeans bc they like jeans) usually also thinks an engineer in skirts and heels and full face makeup is a bit of fluff, and of course by dressing up, she is Making a Statement about Who She Is. (The statement I am making is that I like skirts and think I look cute.) The guy ended up being ok, I guess (other than being a branch covidian). I don't think much of him, but I don't have to interact with him.

Jeans are pretty uncomfortable, by the way. I hardly ever wear them these days.

The VA in Phoenix was the last hospital to enforce colored 'scrubs' for all nurses, lab techs, nurses aids.
Now all the RNs in all the hospitals wear navy blue.

45 If I had to do it all over again, instead of working in the financial industry, I think I might have gone to work for a company that peddles the kind of gimmicky management training I saw a series of employers, in both the private and government sectors, sink money into pretty much endlessly. It is positively astounding to see the lengths to which managers and executives will debase themselves in order to go along with the management fad of the moment (and I'm not even talking about diversity training, which is, of course, a grand con all to itself). I have heard of grown men
breaking down and crying because, in one "exercise", their peers (instructed to do so beforehand) refused to give them a "warm, fuzzy" (i.e., a hug). I have been told of adults literally being given rubber ducks to play with in the privacy of their own bathtubs for the purpose of reconnecting with their inner child. Nonetheless, pots of money in the business, probably more than I made as a humble banker and credit insurance underwriter.

I can't, but it's not software or other typical parasite-type start-ups. It was a business with a traditional service, but it was going to "part of a dynamic overhaul of everything you know about the _________ industry."

Heh. I've only bought ONE new car in my life. I was working for Ford Aerospace, and they had a well-known perk that employees could by new Ford vehicles for something like 2% over Dealer Cost. The funniest part was that when somebody would show up to work in a new Ford vehicle, you could bet there was a good chance it would be followed by giving their two weeks notice -- which is exactly what happened in my case.

Anyway, that was '89 and I'd gotten a new job elsewhere, so went down to the local Ford dealer and bought the cheapest new car they had (without having to haggle!) -- an '89 Ford Escort (and bought the add-on $500 sunroof) for $10,000. Fun car, with a pretty damn good sound system.

I read an interesting essay a few months ago, possibly linked here, that talked about play in societies and the concept of a spoilsport. It made the argument that covid shit (masks, etc.) is an example of social play, and those of us pointing out the hypocrisy (e.g., our betters not masking) are spoilsports, and that's why we are hated and not people like that chick who said she didn't wear a mask because the party was super fun (was that Lightfoot? The hypocrites have all blended together).

it's interesting, if you look at the old world, it's the northern Europeans and the Scandi's who always valued Conformity more than anything. Those closer to the Mediterranean (Italians, French) seemed to be a lot more into good food, good drink, good women. And it's pretty much only the English (and only a few of them) who valued being 'Eccentric" and going Against the Grain just for it's own sake.

Sooo, about that book:

The company that I worked for (20 years at the time) was acquired by a mid sized bank, and that bank was then acquired by a BoA, all within a year or two.
BoA insisted that every employee join the takeover team in Lost Wages to discuss the "merger".

They flew everyone from all around the country to Vegas for a 24 hour event, where they gave everyone a copy of "who moved my cheese" and a box of juggling sacks.

2/3 of the room was let go within 6 months as they were just "baloney slicers according to one of "the Bob's". Thank goodness the departed learned to juggle, and figure out who moved their cheese.

The problem is that when you're being eccentric deliberately, you're really just being a conformist. A lot of those eccentric Brits seemed to view it as a fashion statement or a way of disguising serious problems with sociopathy.

85 My last government job was with the Army as a civilian. I had just moved from CA to KY and my clothes were on a moving van somewhere in Utah or Arizona. Whatever.

Having worked for the fed in CA for two different agencies, I found their dress codes to be to my liking. Wear whatever makes you happy and comfortable.

The Army doesn't give a shit about what makes you happy or comfortable. It took me several years, but I broke them of that. Not that I could wear shorts and flip flops to work, although I did occasionally, and got grief about it, but nothing else, but the whole shirt and tie shit was a no-go.

115 There was a federal court case some years ago - early 90's maybe, I forget the details but the gist of the case was that some female workers sued over the company dress code, which was fairly banal. I think it was a 2-1 ruling with a dissent noting that it was the *men* who were discriminated against because they were the ones who truly had a very narrow range of uniform choices -- blue or gray suit, boring tie, black shoes. It was the women who had a great deal more variety in what they could wear. I don't have access to federal cases on my Westlaw account so I can't look it up but it was a very interesting opinion, especially for the time.

Doing IT work, I found that when dealing with people from certain cultures.... like Doctors from India or Pakistan... if I FIRST met them in a suit, I would be treated much better than if I showed up in Jeans.

Part of it was a Caste System cultural thing.

There's also, I'd wager, a temporary dip from so many people getting their first taste of telecommuting/remote work. I've done remote work exclusively since 2012, partially remote for ten years before that, and I'm comfortable with it. There is, however, not so much a learning curve as a "settling-in curve." Some people just can NOT work remote. The first two months are usually the test. After that, you either do fine, or you sit there in your underpants looking at cat pictures on the internet when you're supposed to be working. With the coof, there's no option to put those people back in an office, so they either quit (attrition) or plod on uselessly (productivity dip).

Talk about a building full of people with no real problems in life.

I figured that when I moved to Austin and started working in tech that it was going to be super relaxed, people come and go and work from home as they please. Was I ever in for a rude awakening. I ran into a buzzsaw of 20- and 30-somethings that would get to the office at 7:30, leave at 6:00, and wonder why I didn't want to do the same. It would have been one thing if we were in a high-stakes finance world or somewhere that 70-hour weeks are even a little bit necessary, but we weren't. People spent HOURS at the office playing ping-pong or video games, shooting the shit, eating the company-provided lunch, and just generally fucking off. I got in at 9, knocked my shit out, and left at 3:30. This was to the dismay of my bosses.

Needless to say I'm not there any longer.

I bounced around quite a bit at my last gig. I'd do what I was told, but somehow the 6 month deadline they gave me was about 5 months too long. So they'd find something else for me to do. I had a strong IT background, could write technical documentation, was well versed in federal bullshit speak and didn't give a fuck who I was assigned to, or who I reported to... it all pays the same. Plus I'm like a year out from retirement.

So I get assigned to the mainframe software branch responsible for all Army enlisted and officer HR data. My cube has a huge black stain on the carpet... likely coffee as it's right outside the manager's office and was probably a coffee area at one time. I hated it. So one morning I took some masking tape and made the outline of a body around the stain. Looked like a crime scene.

The (THE) General in charge of our division comes in one day to see my boss, looks at my cube and asks "What happened here?" I shrug and say "Mistakes were made."

I got new carpeting a week later.

In my line of work(20 years on the CME trading floor 18 as a employee and 2 as a IOM member THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS SLACKING because if you did not give 110% of yourself every day you could cost your employer 6 or 7 or 8 figures. If you became known as a slacker on the floor you would be blacklisted and would not be allowed back on the floor to work for anybody.

213 Ben Had! I was watching Yellowstone last night and there was a good deal of time spent on these rodeo guys and the horses. I was so impressed with the horses. They do this thing where they spin around in little circles and another where they go real fast they come to a sudden stop. I noticed they have all four legs bandaged I'm assuming to keep from injury because they have such spindly legs. It was fascinating. The horses were beautiful.

Most guys wore shorts and sandals and wild t-shirts and a number of the women literally wore bikinis! There were food and beer in the fridge and they shut down the office at noon of Fridays.

324 Infidel, some credit unions will work with you and you might get a cheaper interest rate if you drop the years to what you owe currently.

We refi'ed this year and made the term shorter to match the old loan. Dropped payments as less interest over term of loan. Depending on the years left, you can also look at a 15 or 20 yr term refi. The yield curve on the 15 and 30 for our refi was within 1/4 pt.

A lot depends on your risk tolerance and whether you plan to live in the area later. If you plan on selling in 4-5 years, probably the savings is not worth it.

335 When I worked in the museum bidness, I would bicycle to work, rinse off in the OSHA mandated shower (lots of hazmats), and put on my suit and tie so as to make a good impression on the visiting nobility with the checkbooks. I would be researching, writing, editing, designing electronic/electrical doohickeys. Fun stuff. Then I'd need to fab something, or the BIG compressor would go out, and I'd lose the jacket and tie, climb into the coveralls hanging on the inside of my door (I had an actual office with a door, not just a cubicle!) and go do what needed to be done.

This was a 15/20k square foot serious shop, and I was the master of the electrons. 1.2 KV feed, and guess who put in the 2 extra 480v xformers, 2 more 240v xformers, and a strange 320v unit for a Canadian CNC mill that the boss found on E-Bay.

Then go back into the design shop to do a presentation, having lost the coveralls and restored the jacket and tie.

The bossman appreciated my care for the corporate image, and covered my dry cleaning. He followed my lead in having a couple changes of clothes in his office. His office was, much larger than mine, but we both had soldering stations behind our desk

1) Gave me praise for catching a conflict between two OTHER team member's assigned tasks; so they didn't waste a month cross-coding over the same area without discussing it first.

2) Gave me a dressing down for spending time talking to other people on the team; even if my work got done as well. Because it was distracting others and slowing them down.

I was a bit unclear on how to continue to do the first without ever doing the second... Still am.

345 I haven't worn jeans since I was about 7.
I always got 'hand-me-downs' and I hated that.
In my late teens, I heard a program on TV one late night about how to dress for success. The first rule was to dress like those you want to be. I wanted to be an engineer, so I pretty much started dressing like the nerds at IBM. I still do. Even when I am doing 'dirty work' outside.

348 I remember in the very early 2000s we were suddenly deluged with 'who moved my cheese' seminars and workshops. Obviously management had heard/read(?) about the supposed successes of other groups using this analogy from a 1999 book, and all jumped on the bandwagon.
Management loves jargon. Another of my pet peeves was the 'blue sky' time-wasting workshops. Most weren't really 'open sky' but had hidden agendas.

349 53 Anyway, that was '89 and I'd gotten a new job elsewhere, so went down to the local Ford dealer and bought the cheapest new car they had (without having to haggle!) -- an '89 Ford Escort (and bought the add-on $500 sunroof) for $10,000. Fun car, with a pretty damn good sound system.

350 141 The best advice I received regarded the importance of keeping home and work life separate, distinct. There is my home space and then there is my work space. I have to physically go from one to the other.

Also the IRS insisted on the physical separation in the event that the employer paid for things like Internet connectivity, electricity, etc., otherwise that remuneration would be 100% taxable.
