Our Credentialed, But Maleducated, Elite Are Getting Introduced to Concentration Risk

Any small business owner knows that relying on just one supplier or one major customer exposes him to great risk. Most investors know not to put all of their nest egg in one company’s stock.

So how is it that our best and brightest leaders, with gilded pedigrees, and surrounded by graduates of the most prestigious universities, have all forgotten the timeless wisdom of the proverb “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

We know the answer of course. Our elites are well connected people who are credentialed, yet dangerously maleducated. The risks from concentration and lack of diversification are completely alien to them. All they know how to do is follow the pack of their peers, who are also following the pack. It’s a shame, because ignoring the peril of concentration risk has put us all in a difficult spot.

The combined US market share of the adjacent ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach was 32% in 2020. No other West Coast port exceeded 5%, and there are plenty to choose from – Oakland, San Diego, Tacoma, etc. There are excellent reasons why LA / Long Beach is the busiest port in America, but relying on it for the majority of West Coast imports created a dangerous concentration risk. And now our supply chains are busted because that port is so crowded and overwhelmed (and strangled by red tape) that its processes have completely broken down. Wise people would not have assumed that all imports could flow through that port alone without there being serious risk of business interruption. But then, most of our business and political leaders are not very wise.

I wrote recently about how the US produced 37% of global microchips in 1990. It’s now down to 10%. Meanwhile, China and Taiwan now control 70% of the production. Throw in South Korea, and 91% of global microchip production is subject to interruption by China. Yet political and business leaders have championed outsourcing all this production to Communist China’s sphere of influence. They never once thought there were any risks from concentrating it there. But now with Covid and energy crises shutting down Chinese ports, plus various other supply chain bottlenecks, there is a catastrophic shortage of microchips in the US. It didn’t have to be that way. How did our leaders get their advanced degrees and never learn about concentration risk?

And irrespective of China, Principled Free Traders™ never once considered the possibility that shipping interruptions could occur if all American manufacturing was offshored and then concentrated in Asia. They sneered and mocked anyone who tried to explain that domestic sourcing eliminates many risks of a global supply chain.

Domestically, we have allowed a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of tech companies, which are our 21st Century utilities. Rather than taming them with anti-trust laws, we have allowed the FANGs to gobble up or squash any competitors. With their monopoly market shares, and the power to silence anyone they choose, their’s is a politically dangerous concentration. And we are now starting to realize that Monster Tech companies are openly loyal to China and contemptuous of the United States. That is terrifying.

Real leaders would start calling for a repatriation of manufacturing. Where imports are necessary, they’d back away from Asia and look more toward Latin America, Africa, and Eastern Europe, allowing easier access to Gulf Coast and East Coast ports. And as for Monster Tech, it is time for some good old-fashioned, carry-a-big-stick, Teddy Roosevelt-style trustbusting.

17 Real leaders would start calling for a repatriation of manufacturing.

The problem is that "real leaders" need a "real party" to get things done. Trump called for a resumption of American-made products and wanted us to detach from the Orient, but "his" party is too corrupt, too bought off and too jealous of their status as members of the Inner Party to see the wisdom of what he wanted. They are mandarins, ossified in the politics of "we've always done it this way" and "it's easier (for which, read, 'it's more profitable for us') to do it this way."

The GOP needs to be wiped out and a new party constituted from its ashes before what you've described in your last paragraph can happen.

Thus, the idea that we might have a choke point at the docks was inconceivable to the Free Trade Absolutist crowd, because they assumed greed would make everyone always work their best to keep the flow of goods and services. 52 And this is another major flaw in the "global economy/one world" concept. It sounds great on paper to outsource your manufacturing and other less glamorous jobs but unless everyone, everywhere is completely on board with the "we all work together and believe the same" concept, eventually you start running into problems with our overseas dependency.

The closest anyone got to this was the British Empire which was importing things to England to sell from places as far away as Hong Kong and South Africa. But to do so, they had to control the seas in an absolute iron fist and be willing to treat people with brutality and even death if need be to keep things flowing. That's what it takes.

My business used to do internal presentations for many of the tech firms in the valley - I was privvy to loads of insider info, but could never take advantage of it since I wasn't in congress.

I remember in the mid 80's we were working for Toshiba (or maybe Hitachi), that were touting this whole Just In Time fabrication thing, and pushing it heavily. Soon, we were doing the same for HP, NSC and others. Not in a single one of these presentations or demos did anybody address the questions most laymen had for "what if" scenarios. Nope, all they could see was dollar signs and hanging onto their money until the last possible second. Of course, by the 90's that was how they were all operating.

The chickens have come home to roost - and apparently they've been fucking like minks.

Don't worry, with global warming, you don't need icebreakers.

Oh wait...

Dozens of ships have gotten stuck in the sea ice of the Russian Arctic due to an earlier-than-expected freeze over the past week, media outlets have reported.

Moscow has invested heavily in the so-called Northern Sea Route as the Arctic warms disproportionately faster than the rest of the world and opens the strategic shipping route connecting Europe and Asia to year-round navigation.

Northern Sea Route operators said they were surprised by the early sea-ice formation, which previously did not warrant icebreaker escorts.

Unlike in previous years, an ice layer 30 centimeters thick had already formed across most of the Laptev Sea and East Siberian seas by late October, according to The Barents Observer.

Funny, but Tim Pool actually falls into the eggs in one basket category. He's dependent entirely upon goolag's largesse. He's forced to sit on the fence for fear of them terminating his ass. If that happens, he's toast. I'll take MOR "conservatism" if it sways younger people to even start paying attention - which certainly seems to be the case with Mr. Beany. Some realize he's a fence sitter (like Crigler), and that's fantastic. Manufacturing *was* being repatriated, largely due to Trump policies (and jawboning, and body English, which in select circumstances are important parts of "policy").

But America decided it didn't want that. Good job, America! Who needs full employment, and as important, the first sustained rise in real household income for the lower half of the income distribution?

Except one of the main reasons we lost so much manufacturing is that it ranges from impossible to just exorbitantly expensive to actually manufacture anything here. Endless red tape, confiscatory tax and penalty regimes, out-of-control lawsuits, and now the corporate fetishes for wasting billions of dollars on "diversity" and other left-wing pet projects. What are we going to do about all that? When you can make Item X in China for $10.49 but the same item made in America costs $100.49, you can make all the "calls" for repatriation you want, but nothing is going to change.

But then they punish you for putting out more than 2 videos. I find 5m to be a sweet spot. If you're doing a 22 minute video, then cover a bunch of topics. And I suppose, I've seen Tim doing that just a bit (maybe 2). Jeremy puts out good ones occasionally, and tends to keep them a little more trimmed down. He also does a lot of clickbait that triggers the left, which I love because it's obvious they never watch the actual content. In that "reading" category, I probably prefer Salty the most, he has fun with it and keeps it concise.

252 Archer, I understand, but my point applies in those cases as well. Capital-intensive public goods are rarely able to be sourced in a truly competitive, cost-effective manner. Nature of the beast, really.

But it's really an entirely different subject than cost-efficiency in general manufacturing. And in that area, the big economic one really under discussion, "cost-efficiency" is a function of many things, some of them real, some of them artificial (and thus controllable).

The controllable things are regulation, taxation, and other artificial impositions. Oh, and rent-seeking by companies or labor unions, effected via Congress.

Trump attacked the first set of those things, with great and surprisingly quick effect. But he was just getting started. Thus why I see his removal as probably on the level of "catastrophic" for America's economy and society, both of which can still thrive, if given the room.

272 I'm sympathetic to this viewpoint, and absolutely agree that is strategically insane to not maintain domestic capabilty in critical resources and processes, as well as a reasonable redundancy in infrastructure like ports.

The problem is: how? Subsidies and set-asides attract corruption like blood draws leeches, and like any state intervention in the economy, are usually implemented not to serve their ostensible purpose but to funnel money to some politician's favorite relative or associate. In their absence, will people willingly pay more on their own? You know what you call a maritime shipping company that doesn't pare away every inefficiency and redundancy? One that went out of business years ago.

At a start we could try to find some way to factor wild differences in environmental and labor regulations (such as exist between the US and China) into the price of imported goods, a sort of tariff legally chained to measurable differences in those factors. Democrats purport to be concerned about such things, so some of them might be able to be brought on board. However this still has us relying on the political process.

No easy answers.

I will say though, there was a "right-wing" back then with the John Birch Society-types. But it had ZERO to do with JFK getting killed. What's funny is when Nixon first heard JFK had been shot, he thought "Birchers" had done it.

The Left though is free to engage in all sorts of conspiracy theories like "right-wing" generals killing JFK or because Dallas was not sufficiently Democrat, that's why their hero (that brought in prostitutes into the White House) was murdered .

281 San Diego lost the "big port" competition to LA long ago, early 20th century, when the railroad competition was settled. And when the modern, containerized form of shipping evolved, LA/Long Beach jumped in big-time with investments to become the hub. All the surface transportation infrastructure (this goes back to the railroad thing) is the key. Nothing comparable to LA/Long Beach on the west coast, and "building" something comparable would be an enormous, expensive task.

Seattle does decent volumes, I think. But the vast infrastructure that has evolved, logically, around the LA/Long Beach hub would need to be duplicated to make another port comparable. And while diversification/resilience has value, in this case the cost of that "value" would certainly be astronomical, and a game-stopper at the opening bell.

She is not buying any of Dana's assumptions with the questions being asked. Bash wanted to know if a Republican legislature is going to come around and fully-fund HBCUs, and Sears said that Dems had the chance for years, and didn't do it.

298 Directrix, well said. The corruptibility of the "managed trade" thing seems to magically elude its proponents, who somehow seem unaware of how things actually work in Congress. The theft of consumer $ via politically crafted "fair trade" laws is just as much theft as any other kind.

That's why the sweeter spot in all this has always been domestic de-regulation, or, more accurately, elimination of destructive misregulation. Everyone in CA would benefit from elimination of the absurd, suffocating and utterly baseless environmental regulation (probably almost every restriction introduced since the early 80s could be done away with, to the benefit of all).

Ditto across the land. This alone would bring a measurable uptick in domestic manufacturing. In some areas, much more than an "uptick".

300 IMO JFK was assassinated by a cabal of CIA, Military Industrial Complex and the Mob - maybe LBJ too.

The CIA and MIC wanted Vietnam and wanted Castro dead. The mob was pissed because they helped get JFK elected and he sicced his brother and the DOJ on the Mob. LBJ was involved because, well LBJ was evil.

Detroit was the richest city on earth in 1960 (per capita income) - all of it based on real (i.e. not public goods/govt) economic activity. Economic change followed by civic collapse produced the ruins we see today.

SF has the economic engine of the tech industry, which could have evolved anywhere, but happened to develop nearby, and that engine ain't anywhere close to seeing the kind of situation that enveloped US auto and other manufacturing in the 70s onwards. SF could continue evolving into a weird high-income ghetto, that's it's current trajectory.

We know most of the arms weren't turned in, simply because the figure turned in doesn't even amount to the number of Ruger 10/22's imported.

How many of them properly cached them - zeroed, WITH AMMO, in some place that didn't get paved over or washed out? How many of them can find their caches?

How many of them clued in their kids - or at least nieces and nephews - on where they are, and trained them not just how to use them but WHY, HOW, and WHEN to use them?

It doesn't matter if you don't turn shit in if you don't cache it properly and/or raise kids that are leftist twats. Take note, take heed, and fix your shit.

In the early days after WWII, a man named Demming went to Japan to teach manufacturing techniques. The Japanese wholly embraced and perfected this. Years later, Japan was recruited to come to the US to train us on all of the techniques that they developed.
What the US didn't understand was that Japanese have a very different and disciplined culture.
Many of us realized the pitfalls. Every step of the process must work perfectly for this process to be successful. Too many variables made this mostly impossible.

361 356: "and now you report tech as well"

I am shocked that the tech portion of the supply chain has not been reported. I don't know one company that has not been impacted.

China is withholding the commodities used to make all manner of electronic components and NOBODY has mentioned it outside of the tech companies themselves.

They're strangling us.

363 Higgins: It's simple economics. Today it's oil, right? In ten or fifteen years, food. Plutonium. Maybe even sooner. Now, what do you think the people are gonna want us to do then?

Joe Turner: Ask them?

Higgins: Not now - then! Ask 'em when they're running out. Ask 'em when there's no heat in their homes and they're cold. Ask 'em when their engines stop. Ask 'em when people who have never known hunger start going hungry. You wanna know something? They won't want us to ask 'em. They'll just want us to get it for 'em!

364 Yes, the stealing of the national election and now the stalling of products to the US is most definitely because President Trump stood toe to toe on economics with Xi. Xi's dick crawled up his ass and the entire world knew it and Xi knew everyone knew it. This is retribution time.

365 The Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy (formerly the Industrial College of the Armed Forces) offers senior leader education for development and integration of National Security and Resource Strategy. Its 10-month curriculum is tailored for rising senior government and military personnel, who leave with a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy. Students are selected for potential as future leaders at the highest levels of the Armed Forces, government service, international partners, and private industry. About 300 enter each year; they average 20+ years of professional experience, and 85% enter with a Master's degree or higher. (Paraphrased from their website.)

In other words, since WW2 there's been a DoD institute in place designed to prevent strategic vulnerabilities like excessive reliance on a few sources for important materials and services. So WTF has happened?

368 Get 'em, Buck! Free traders are evil!

CLOSE ALL PORTS. Tell other countries we will not import ANYTHING. The abandonment of free trade led to the unparalleled prosperity and boom times of the 1930s! We need to revisit that strategy!

369 It would be nice if people would attack government and bureaucracy with the same level of venom and stridency as they attack free trade.
