Daily Tech News 12 October 2021

Top Story

  • More sanity in unexpected places. (Sydney Morning Herald)

The SMH is a left-wing rag, and yet:
It turns out that when you reflexively imprison people they get sick of it. Some take to the streets in protest and, clearly, a great many others just silently disobey the absurd demands of their overlords. When the dust settles on this pandemic and the world assesses how to deal with a future crisis, Victoria will be used as a template of what not to do.
I mean, yes, it's just unusual to find a journalist willing to say so.

Tech News

  • I previously complained that you couldn't find any 1080p laptops in Australia for under A$1000, at least not name brand models. That's now changed, a lot. A quick look at one online retailer showed 23 models available. None with more than 8GB of RAM, but one with 8GB RAM, 4GB VRAM, and a 1TB SSD.

  • Which PCIe 4 SSD is best for your laptop? (Tom's Hardware)

This is a different question to which is best for a desktop, because a desktop doesn't care about a few extra watts of power draw. The Seagate Firecuda 530 is very fast, and is available in capacities up to 4TB, but it cuts three hours off the battery life compared to running the same workload on a Samsung 980 Pro.

Not sure if I care because the laptop I'm planning to upgrade is not the one I'm planning to carry with me on a daily basis. But for people who don't purchase laptops in three-packs, it's worth noting.

  • DRAM makers expect a "price correction" by the end of the year. (Tom's Hardware)

Usually when you see this it's a warning that prices are going up. In thise case, though, it's a warning to investors that prices may go down.

Which is good for everyone else.

  • If your house is made of cheese, the best locks in the world won't keep the mice out. (Bleeping Computer)

The headline suggests a weakness in wildcard SSL certificates, but that's not what this is about. What they are saying is that if you generally use wildcard rather than specific certificates, and your applications don't check the domain used to talk to them, and one of your applications echoes back requests, and an attacker manages to poison your DNS results for their target users.... If all of that, then there's a problem.

Using single-hostname SSL will prevent that, but so will fixing any of the other problems in that list.

  • A Florida judge has ruled that under CDA Section 230 Wikipedia is not liable for errors in articles posted by its users. (Wikimedia)

Since that is literally what the law says, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the judge ruled that way. But it does, a little.

14 I've started thinking of making an investment in a high quality cinema camera, to start shooting again, something like a BlackMagic URSA, so maybe all of Pixy's SSD ranting will come in handy, since I'll need to buy a few, as you can record right to SSDs with USB3, with these cameras.

Wiki has chosen editors (not sure if they have paid ones too) who can overrule, lock and make final says on what's posted, so they shouldn't be allowed any protection over something slanderous being on the site over a few hours/days time. Many platforms even have keyword blocking, where you automatically get posts rejected, so wiki should implement something like where articles can't be posted right away.

I'd have support for wiki if it really was a user edited and controlled encyclopedia, but it's not, it's a leftwing information launderer, used so that other lefties can get away with slander by referring back to the wiki article (see this whole Eric Clapton RS piece that's based 100% on his wiki page contents)

Didn't even one of thier old creators call out the site for becoming partisan bs?

The lovely wife is gonna have a bad day. I know her well. She is a Saint and doesn't say shit until she is waaaaaay fed up but - she was compelled to talk to her adult son about some of the crap going down within his house. Kids are involved. It didn't go well.

He, as is his habit, missed the forest for the trees. Simply isn't yet ready to connect actions with the consequences of those actions.

23 Mornin', all,

Slept later than I planned; I'd set the alarm, but forgot to switch it on. All I missed was my morning workout, so not too bad.

We've started giving Chekov the Codger Cat his appetite stimulant again. He's been picking at his wet food. This morning he seemed a lot more interested in breakfast. I really don't know what else to do; the vet visits last month brought up perfectly normal blood and other numbers, no diabetes or thyroid trouble. He's pleased to be petted and fussed over, and doesn't hide under furniture, but is just . . . old, I guess. He's 14, which is about the same as a human at 70. Though I've known cats who were pretty active at 16.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at October 12, 2021 04:44 AM (c6xtn)

24 Wolfus,

My sisters cats are 16 at this point. The girl kittuh is active but runs out of gas pretty quickly. The boy kittuh is blind and has failing kidneys now so his active is much shorter. They both still get around fairly well, even Blind Boy Casper. You'd be surprised how well he gets around blind. No running of course but he gets around.

***
Sorry to hear that, Puddleglum. I've never had to deal with a blind cat, so I can't imagine what that would be like. Of course they can be guided by scent and hearing, and whatever information they get from their whiskers. If their environment hasn't changed, I'd think they'd handle things pretty well.

I don't think Chekov's quality of life is too bad. He's just limited in what he can, or wants to, do.

26 Yesterday a member of the campus police came over to do a security review of our offices. I told him he could take off his mask, and he grinned and did just that. I left mine off as we walked around our offices. He stuck his back on when we went into 2 offices, though I left mine off. Scroo it.

If they reject my religious exemption statement and let me go, I'm leaving the damn thing off for my remaining time. If somebody accosts me, I'll say, "I'm a short-timer. What're ya gonna do, fire me?"

He had Guinness taps on certain tables that let customers serve themselves. the State said no way because it broke State laws because customers could over serve themselves, get stumbling drunk with no one watching and that was illegal.

104 A perverse side benefit of this plandemic may actually wind up being a reclamation of actual left-wing politics by so called "left wingers", and a rejection of the more barbaric collectivist impulses. What i'm struggling to say here with the shit terminology political science has foisted on us is: a re-establishment of a "slightly more collectivist" pole of Liberalism to counter the more individualist, Randian or Rothbardian pole of Liberalism.

I want to live in a world of Isaiah Berlin vs. Thomas Sowell, not Hitler vs. Stalin.

105 Liquor laws are generally stuff made up by idiots. For example, in a lot of places you order a drink at the bar, you can't carry it to a table. Wait staff has to do it.

122 M and Ms don't taste like they used to, at least it's variable enough I don't want to bother with them. Reese's peanut butter cups, I used to buy those with paper route money and eat about 4 of them in a row, till my arms started to tingle. They don't taste the same either. Hershey Bars are "OK" as far as that goes, on the principle "any chocolate is better than no chocolate."

Good chocolate is more on the preparation than anything. They "conch" the beans and the mass until there are no detectable grittiness particles and the sugar is partly carmelized.

I agree. It's cheap chocolate and gross. Ferrero Rochers is very good. Eat one of their macadamia chocolates and I dare you to stop at just one. There's also a very good chocolate my friend from Germany brings called Milka. American mass produced chocolate companies like Hersheys is very subpar.

Posted by: Lady in Black at October 12, 2021 06:41 AM (sVtYq)

137 Hershey's chocolate uses a proprietary "sour milk" or somesuch, it has a certain whang to the flavor.

I agree the Cocoa is good. I bought a huge bag of that (expensive) Garelli dutch process powder and for the price, I really wanted to like that better than Hershey's for making hot chocolate. It's excellent, but in that application not really worth the money.

161 The Feds forming a supply chain task force and will doubtless exclude anyone who knows about JITlogistics.

So the USPS is going to be running the supply chain - even while they have had more than a couple centuries' head start.

What I see is impedance between generations of supply-chain logistics software. Rail is woefully behind, because of the usual pathologies of entrenched regulated bureaucracies. New companies like uShip are constantly improving product, dittos with many freight haulers and inter modal aggregators. So they can figure out how to leverage advantages not seen by the older generation software. This mismatch then harms the older tech companies and that is where we are seeing breakdowns.
