  • A Node.js library that is downloaded 3 million times a week - and is used in Amazon's developer libraries - has a remote execution flaw. (HTTPToolkit)

An attacker that can convince you to read a malicious URL can run whatever code they like on your server.

The problem is it uses the vm module to run untrusted code - when the vm module explicitly says not to use it to run untrusted code.

  • If you're stuck at home in Australia waiting for one of (1) the 70% vaccination target to be met and things at least in NSW open up again, (2) the police kick your door down over a Facebook post that they posted for you, or (3) your package arrives in the mail don't bet too much on option 3. (ZDNet)

I understand they have staff out sick, can't easily hire more with this fucking lockdown going on, and are working to shift a much greater than usual volume, but I'm not sure how stopping accepting packages for three days is meant to help.

  • Get your own Amiga! (Apollo Core)

In case you're too young to have joined in the fun back in the 80s and 90s, the Vampire V4+ has a Motorola-compatible "68080" chip implemented in an FPGA - not emulated - with 512MB of RAM and a new (but compatible) chipset.

It's around eight times faster than the most powerful stock Amiga ever sold - the A4000 - and uses just 2W of power. It has both Amiga-style mouse and joystick ports and USB, plus the usual things like Ethernet, don't-call-it-HDMI-and-we-don't-need-to-pay-royalties, and an internal CF slot and an external SD card slot for extra storage. (Actually, that should also be a don't-call-it-SD slot.)

About 600 Euros so it's not exactly a bargain unless you compare it with what those systems cost originally in which case it is absolutely dirt cheap.

  • On the other end of the scale, if you're looking for an AMD motherboard with Thunderbolt 4 the Asus ProArt B550 Creator is one. (Tom's Hardware)

One of exactly two such, in fact.

It has dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, dual 2.5Gb Ethernet ports, dual M.2 slots, HDMI out, DisplayPort in - it's routed to the Thunderbolt ports - and otherwise the usual bits and pieces. Oh, and a PS/2 combo keyboard and mouse port in case you have a 30 year old keyboard that you just can't bear to part ways with yet.

I wonder how well it works if you just plug two of these together with a Thunderbolt cable.

49 Good morning, horde. I'm back in a cousin's good graces. She "asked honestly" why parents protest their children wearing masks at school, promised not to snark but just read respectfully. Her FB pals made no such promise.

I posted a few things I knew FB wouldn't censor. But of course, the German study was "paid for by opposition" and an op-ed from a doctor saying children shouldn't bear the brunt was "true, but adults aren't getting vaccinated, so..." I got annoyed and just posted to the Karens, "You're preaching to the choir." I meant the other Karens, not me, but voila!

Honestly, I don't blame my cousin. Her beloved grandmother died of Covid-19, so she's very concerned about her parents and her father-in-law. Her hubby doesn't protest their kids wearing masks everywhere indoors, either.

Captain John Murphy was the Australian coast watcher who became a Japanese POW at Rabaul. By the end of the war he was one of just seven Allied POWs to survive.

The Australian Army proceeded to court martial Capt. Murphy on charges of colluding with the enemy. Some of the testimony used against him came from the Japanese military police that had tortured and starved him.

129 I posted a few things I knew FB wouldn't censor. But of course, the German study was "paid for by opposition"

So they admit that science can't be trusted at all. When viewing a report or study that doesn't comport with the political narrative, then it must be false and wave of hand dismissed. No reason or explanation why other than it doesn't say what I want it to say.

In almost all "paid for by the opposition" there used to be a "who benefits" requirement behind it, as in who gets rich off of this study? For example, don't like a study criticizing windmills? Clearly paid for by Big Oil though absolutely no evidence of Big Oil funding of such objectionable study is required.

The only time when there can never be any objection of a study due to Who Benefits is when it is underwritten and modified by government (via debt and taxes), and the Benefit is abundantly clear that it is for the consolidation of money and power to greedy and tyrannical politicians.

Pet peeve here - FPGAs are closer to software than hardware. There's even a VHDL to C translator, so for applications like this they *are* equivalent to just running WinUAE or whatever. Many of the game FPGAs like the MiSTer use VHDL that's translated from popular software emulators.

In conjunction with, I think, publius' posts yesterday about why hospitals are so resolute in not trying other treatments outside "guidelines" and so forth because of liability issues. Is it not fair to say that if you sign away your right to sue for liability when taking the clot shot itself (which appears true), that you can't also sign away any liability against hospitals for demanding other kinds of treatment? Thus giving you the right to try other treatments outside of this mandated madness one-size-fits-all protocol? I'm not wording that very well...but if liability is the issue, it seems you can opt out with a waiver if you so choose.

Hundreds out with COVID. hahahaha, maybe, but only if it's because of idiotic rules that say "these 300 teachers all briefly met this one teacher who had COVID and now they all have to quarantine for some ridiculous reason."

Now do percent vaccinated.

If we truly had representation, and not a "loyal opposition" putting on a dog and pony show for us, our representatives would be pushing for alternatives to the public school system. I would like to propose mine: Abolish the public schools. Every existing public school is now a private corporation that may sink or swim on its own merits. Parents will be given vouchers equivalent to what the government spent per child, previous to abolition, adjusted for inflation. They may use it to pay in total or in part for any schooling of their choice, keep any remainders, or keep the whole thing and provide homeschooling, provided that their children remain able to pass standardized tests. The science is on our side. Homeschooled students beat all others, and the ability for one parent to stay at home and teach their children while making a decent income would be transformative for millions of families.

176 The social contract is broken. The government refuses to protect, which is its sole essential function.

This. The Union which was based on that contract is kaput. As is the Deep State parasite that killed it.

Seriously then, what is the advantage of having American Citizenship? The price we paid to be heavily taxed on our earnings no matter where earned, the price for being closed out on much of the world investments because of FATCA, the shit we have to take when travelling because the "US" brand has been tarnished for so many years...

You don't have to be a US citizen to own guns, receive welfare and participate in society.

178 CN, that's what I've read. They were visiting relatives. The media is done with reporting on the abandoned Americans in Hellholeistan though. They'll be imprisoned, married off, raped, tortured, enslaved, stoned, hung from Black Hawks, beheaded, murdered and that will be that. We could pick up a few headlines on DailyMail UK. Otherwise, that was like 4 or 5 days ago, man!

Presidents actually negotiating anything these days is completely unheard of. That is why they hated Trump because ALL negotiations are done through State and Commerce bureaucrats and diplomatic nobility.

185 I have to believe most of the teachers participating in the covid walk-out are the most likely to incorporate CRT into their lesson plans. Let them sit at home for a few weeks and put the kids in study hall with some books to read. It will be more productive.

And still more covid panic on the radio. Hospitals full, some kid has died from Delta variant (no mention of comorbidity or obesity) I'd be willing to bet I could go to any local hospital and check in and if there were any delays it would be caused the usual flood of illegals and their anchor babies.

Strike that out Right Now.

Even if all of the government schools were closed and the property sold off, the bond and pension obligations alone would keep your taxes in place for two generations. There is a crap ton of well compensated administrative staff who are expecting a full ride and then some past the grave (e.g. survivor benefits)

Doesn't that relate to experimental new drugs that are meant for those illnesses? So even if Biden didn't cancel it they're probably going "ivermectin isn't a new experimental drug! And it's not meant for Covid so right to try doesn't apply!!"

The fallacy embedded in statements like that is it is implied that they will eventually catch back up. They won't. They will belong to the penalized generation. Not attacking your statement Ripley. Just the idea that kids are merely variables in an equation.

196 Absolutely. But the popular narrative is never that FPGAs are lower power than just running software, it's that they're "more correct" because they're a chip and "not emulation".

Posted by: Ian S. at September 01, 2021 06:40 AM

There is a fundamental difference between how FPGA's do things and how stored-program CPU's do things. For each instruction a stored-program CPU executes it must fetch the instruction, decode it, and then perform it. The FPGA just performs it because the equivalent of programming and FPGA configures the hardware to just do whatever function it is.

That means that although there are certain limitations to what the FPGA can do without implementing a stored-program CPU in the FPGA, it does those things it can do extremely fast. Which implies that it is a whole lot easier to do things like cycle accurate machine emulations in an FPGA than with your typical CPU.

Those limitations, by the way, mean that not every C program can be compiled to VHDL or Verilog or whatever HDL you want. Not without including the implementation of an entire CPU in the output. You can do that, of course, but it kind of defeats the purpose using an FPGA.

Posted by: Cybersmythe at September 01, 2021 11:04 AM (dqP+A)

197 And FPGAs can be as parallel as you want. Emulating a CPU on another CPU works well, but emulating a GPU is a different question. Not so much for something simple like the Amiga, but certainly for more modern hardware.
