The Saturday Night Humor

I asked my husband if I was the only one he had ever slept with. He said yes, all the others were nines and tens. Give it a minute....

I’m on two diets. I wasn’t getting enough food on one.

A cold seat in a public restroom is unpleasant. A warm seat in a public restroom is worse.

Apparently RSVP’ing to a wedding invitation “Maybe next time,” isn’t the correct response.

Don’t irritate old people. The older we get, the less “Life in prison” is a deterrent.

Have you ever listened to someone for a minute and thought “Their cornbread isn't done in the middle.”

Aliens probably fly by earth and lock their doors.

“You will hit every cone on the highway before I let you merge in front of me because you saw that sign 2 miles ago like I did."

I really don’t mind getting older, but my body is taking it badly.

It turns out that being an adult now is mostly just googling how to do stuff.

I miss the 90’s when bread was still good for you and no one knew what kale was.

Do you ever get up in the morning, look in the mirror and think “That can’t be accurate.”

I want to be 14 again and ruin my life differently. I have new ideas.

As I watch this new generation try to rewrite our history, one thing I’m sure of....it will be misspelled and have no punctuation.

I told my wife I wanted to be cremated. She made me an appointment for Tuesday. (This is from the guy in the first one!!!)

Confuse your doctor by putting on rubber gloves at the same time he does.

My wife asked me to take her to one of those restaurants where they make food right in front of you. I took her to Subway.

I picked up a hitchhiker. He asked if I wasn’t afraid, he might be a serial killer? I told him the odds of two serial killers being in the same car were extremely unlikely.

I went line dancing last night. OK, it was a roadside sobriety test... same thing.(H/T CBD)

Is she stupid or high? You decide.

My money is that she is high.

Some people like a stationary second home. Some people like to camp. While others like to move about the country in a RV. This is pretty cool school bus conversion.

Gregoire Thoby, 33, and Fabrice Delaure, 52, are so committed to their nomadic lifestyle that they have even sold their house in California and have "no destination" set, apart from adventure.

"We lived in an off-grid RV for some time in France and Spain and absolutely loved being nomads, the freedom of it," says Gregoire, who moved to LA from Paris with Fabrice in 2015.

"We wanted to let go of things: our apartment, most of our belongings, our upstairs neighbour’s phone calls in the middle of the night. Work less, earn less, live more."

Oregon Muse regularly posts delicious looking food and recipes in his Daily Rants. Regulars know that CBD has an outstanding Food Thread on Sunday afternoons. The Saturday ONT usually has a drink or drinks with food for the photo above the fold.

Tonight, The ONT tries its hand at food. I TRIED TO RECREATE MY FAVORITE DISCONTINUED HOT POCKETS - An incredible culinary horror ensued

I don’t like to waste food. For whatever repressed childhood reason, a wave of guilt washes over me when uneaten food goes into the trash. This can have its benefits — like when I make banana bread from overripe bananas — but it also has drawbacks. Which is why I can sometimes be found eating cold dinosaur chicken nuggets after my daughter becomes full after a single stegosaurus.

Things were no different during this past school year. When my daughter was learning virtually, her school district sent home what would have been her school lunches. There was good stuff in there — like little boxes of cereal and fresh fruit — but there were also less appetizing things, like frozen mystery meat and off-brand Hot Pockets, the latter of which is where this journey begins.

Have any of you attempted to recreate an OTC food product? If so what were the results?

We all collect something. Since this is a Smart Military BlogTM I thought we would cover what one man, identified in court documents as Klaus-Dieter F. from Heikendorf, collected.

For decades, a German man has stockpiled Nazi weapons of war in his basement, including a 45-ton Panzer-V (Panther) tank and an 88-millimeter anti-aircraft gun. Now, a German court has given him a 14-month suspended sentence and fine of about $300,000 for the arsenal, which was seized in a raid in 2015.

How the hell do you get a tank into your basement? Awesome collection, too bad some sniveling Karen had to spoil it for Mr. Klaus-Dieter F from Heikendorf.

Is this guy the Official Chaplin for The Bulwark & Conservative, Inc.?

If I was as smart as Jim Bakker's audience, I would join them in buying a $1,000 "Miracle Blanket" that magically pays bills.

Bakker, the convicted fraudster televangelist who was recently fined for selling a phony Covid-19 cure, seems destined to spend the rest of his life running grifts on wide-eyed suckers. At this point, anyone giving this guy a nickel deserves what they receive in return.

Gun safety rules apply to every type of gun, including nail guns. Ouch!!!Genius Award Winner.

Doctors could not see evidence of the nail penetrating his scrotum despite pain

23 In the town where I live, there was a very rich eccentric man who owned a significant amount of land. At one point, he dug his own tunnel under a highway connecting two of his properties. He stashed a fair amount of military surplus equipment down there. Including vehicles. He died a few years ago and his property is finally for sale (he refused to sell). Bit of a crazy weirdo, but very rich.

30 Hey everybody.

I told my wife I wanted to be cremated. She made me an appointment for Tuesday.

Sounds like a Dangerfield original.
Speaking of which, at my most recent traditional part-time job, I was in the same mini-mall as a small mortuary. They actually had a special painted on the window: "FULL CREMATION $800."

I wondered what would happen if someone walked in, asked if the special was still valid, and upon being assured it is, slapped 8 Franklins down on the counter and demanded to be cremated immediately.

Commercial stuff uses a lot more salt than you would at home, IIRC. There's a need for it, anti-microbial prevention and all, but it's also so easy to salt it for amplified flavor sake.

sorry about that. Just kidding but it is interesting how much what you grow up with influences you. I have been to some Thanksgiving dinners with some really rich people. But not a one of them could cook not matter how much money they had. It is funny that cooking well either means something to you or it does not. See the little friendly looking gas pump icon? It will be either on the right or left. It also corresponds with the same side as the fuel fill port. This way, you won't have to guess, or get out of the car to check.

I may have shared this before - When I retrieved my late wife's cremains, the box was filled to the absolute brim with her. Any new widow/widower will tell you their brain isn't working properly early on. As such, I wondered - Hey, was her body just exactly the right size to have resulted in this exact amount or, did they have a bit extra that didn't make it?

Even worse, I guess - was there just not quite enough to fill the box and they used a bit of Big Bart who was in the furnace earlier in the day?

I wasn't sleeping anyway. What was one more impossibility?

116 I had a steroid injection in my neck Tuesday. Now my left arm has nerve pain...as in certain parts of my hand, wrist, and arm hurt to even touch. The only way to describe it is it feels like when you hit your "funny bone" but constant. It is starting to fade a bit but it is still quite painful. I did get a prescription for gabapentin but it takes up to a month to help with nerve pain. I won't be doing that again. The shot also didn't really help with my neck/back issues.

Posted by: lin-duh at August 14, 2021 09:35 PM (UUBmN)

117 Drum Brakes - I'm convinced they largely went bye-bye, not for reasons of brake fade (it can happen, but ..) but due to the number of parts required ($$$) and the somewhat difficulty of setting them up correctly. They do need adjustment now and then, the "self adjusters" w/ star wheel mostly don't, at least not in the rust belt.

It's also my observation that most people trying to save a buck and "do their own brakes" will &$@k them up. An old school mechanic I talked to, a pro, said easily half the cars he worked on in the shop had defective brakes because of Joe DIY and his brother in law people trying to work on them over the weekend.

The front axle ordinarily provides maybe 70% of the stopping power, this is what counts. But 30% at the rear axle is important. Turns out drum brakes were retained for the rear axle, because of the parking brake mechanism. It's more complicated to effect a parking brake with rear discs. It is not unusual to see rear drum brakes with no wear on them, because people don't know how to set them up correctly, and they don't realize how bad their brakes are, they just get used to it, I guess.

177 I was a regular blood donor for years. I was over the12 gallon mark. A few days after my last draw I got a letter from Red Cross saying that they can no longer give blood because I have Hep C.

I knew right away it was BS because I had blood work done a few weeks before and I doubted they would have missed Hep C. Long story short no amount of proof convinced the Red Cross that I didn't have Hep C. My doctor even called on my behalf. Still none in my system as of 2 weeks ago.

This took place in the mid 90s. So their screw up probably has cost them another 10+ gallons over the years.

179 Every single piece of equipment, from major end items like a truck, or a helicopter, right down to tent pegs and cots and sleeping bags, is ultimately signed for by somebody. Commanders might sign for every damn thing in their battalion, and then it gets sub hand-receipted down the chain.

Do not lose equipment you have signed for, or they will make you pay for it. This can get complicated, when everything is all painted green, and looks exactly the same. There was something called a "Field Loss", which I presume means loss in battle.

Ed Harris to play Gene Kranz is probably a non starter, because left wingers can only really portray the tropes and stereotypes of how they think conservatives are. Heck, Kranz may be a Democrat for all I know. But I think the point still stands, they don't really "get it".

They think to portray these guys, they just have to act like an authoritarian asshole, who yell at people like a Marine Corps drill sergeant would, for chew people out no good reason,
etc, blow off the handle. To be sure, I would not have wanted senior NASA people pissed off at me. But they would have had their reasons, you can bank on it.

361 Granola made at home is easy, and superior to the store bought. Quite a bit cheaper too. I don't even really like it that much, but it's traditional on a long hike, so I always bring some.

BBQ sauce is pretty easy, and fun. Lots of secret ingredients there. Pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, that kind of thing. I don't mess with "Instant" Oatmeal either. Another food I don't care for, traditional on hikes.

Chocolate syrup. Merely subbing out cane sugar for corn syrup takes this to another level. Commercial foods aren't necessarily "bad" but they cheap out on some of the basic ingredients. Corn syrup, and industrial oils, and lots of ersatz, and preservatives.

I wondered what would happen if someone walked in, asked if the special was still valid, and upon being assured it is, slapped 8 Franklins down on the counter and demanded to be cremated immediately.
The better gay would be "Ok, special still good..hang on, be right back...gotta get something from the car"

440 Closing costs for a buyer should be title insurance and whatever fees the county/state requires. Never pay any bullshit underwriting fee or other things like that. And yes you will pay inbounds and pre-paid taxes/insurance. But that's not really a closing cost since it's still your money, just in an escrow account. And then you get back what you have in your current escrow account so it is a wash. True cost (not pre-paids) should be like $2-3K.

468 Mazar was reported gone earlier. Former Afghan army and local troops piled up at the Uzbek border, waiting to be let in. And one Taliban with a smart phone posted a short tour of the home of either Gen. Dostum (the big cheese up there) or the governor, both of whom have split.

Jalalabad seems like it's gone too, so that's the last major town besides the capital in government control. Bill Roggio, who's been following this thing forever, is a good source of info. As he just said, it's only a matter of time. There have been no significant exceptions to the pattern of quick collapse/surrender/flight/realignment/whatever.

He notes that arrival of US (and I'd add British, and Australian) forces to secure evac of foreign personnel may slow things a bit in Kabul, but just a bit. Big question now to me is whether Taliban will be smart and just let the foreigners pull out in good order and without much interference.

472 But how fcked up is that -- they get notified immediately when people sign the papers -- like the corporations have a pipeline to the county courthouse database.

More fvcked up than people realize. Iowa has what's called the "Abstract" system at the county level. Maintained at the abstract office. Every change of ownership of real property is recorded there and listed over the years. And each sale is supposed to get the county $25 or whatever.

What's "interesting", is when MERS came along, the real estate folks and banks decided this recording of real estate at the county level was too much trouble. They sliced and diced mortgages and mixed them up, on the notion that 50 current mortgages could be mixed into 500 delinquent mortgages and could then be slapped with "AAA" rating, and sold around the world as "Mortgage Backed Securities". Nobody knows who owns what, because they didn't bother to properly record it, as the law requires. Not every state uses the "Abstract" system, but they have something like it. I'm pretty sure phony balogna vapor ware re-hypothicated derivatives of derivative synthetic "mortgages" are highly fucking illegal in every state.

Two days later a sales rep called back to "confirm" my order and starting talking about all kinds of things unrelated to my order, as if I was an idiot (I am). I cut him off: "are you trying to upsell me on the deal I worked out two days ago, because if so then cancel all of it".

If they had had any sense, they would have put each Megapack on a railway flatcar, and then linked up rows of 20 or so on numerous parallel tracks. One little switch engine to shuffle them around. If Car 13 on Track 3 catches fire, you Switch Track 3 out of the circuit, release the coupler between Cars 12 and 13, and haul Cars 13 through 20 out onto a spur, then switch them to a vacant track, drop off the burning Car 13, and run cars 14 through 20 back to Track 3, and hitch them in again. Grid-scale battery storage for "green" power is a stupid idea. The batteries cost a great deal of money, and they have a limited life span. There are losses charging them, and there are losses discharging them, and there are losses in the rectifiers and inverters used to charge and discharge them. So you are taking relatively expensive energy, and making it more expensive by wasting a significant fraction of it.

It's all trying to paper over the fact that their windmills can't produce enough power at peak load times to be useful.

Fossil fuels work just fine, and we are in no danger of running out for the remainder of this century, at the very least. And we have nuclear, which works fine, too. And if all the money that has been pissed away on wind and solar had been put into making practical hydrogen fusion reactors, we would never have to worry about energy scarcity ever again.

There's a good case to be made for thorium cycle reactors. If we'd had sense and poured all the trillions we wasted over the past decades, just a fraction of it, into developing that, we wouldn't have to worry about energy for many lifetimes.

We could (along with transmission and distribution updates) have electric power coming out of our eyeballs.

It's a long case to get up to speed on thorium, but I've read a good bit of it, and the arguments against it. I like it. But it will never happen. Without a revolution/reset.

Big problem with thorium is scarcity. It nearly all comes from India, where monazite-bearing beach sands are placer mined. If you are going to tie your energy security to a particular mineral, you'd damned well better have domestic supplies. AFAIK, there are no mines anywhere producing thorium from primary deposits. Its chemistry is such that it does not form minerals that can concentrate naturally in any of the means that form typical ore deposits for other minerals. Uranium is very active chemically, and does form such deposits, and is really quite readily mined.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 15, 2021 01:10 AM (+aAbD)
