Biden administration targets 52 mpg fuel economy regulations by 2026
And the EPA lays the groundwork for stricter regulations to come in 2027. This past Friday, the Biden administration delivered on its goal of updated fuel economy regulations with a set of proposals to replace the Trump Administration's SAFE rules. The Environmental Protection Agency targets an average fleet standard of 52 mpg come 2026. This proposal includes a 10% boost for the 2023 model year in fuel efficiency standards and 5% increases through 2026. It's a much larger jump than the Trump era's 1.5% increases, which would lead to an average fleet standard of 43.3 mpg by 2026. The latest regulations also go a touch further than the Obama administration's rules, originally in place through 2025. This proposal also lays the groundwork for stricter regulations to come in 2027, according to the EPA, "to speed the transition of the light-duty vehicle fleet toward a zero emissions future." The Biden administration and major automakers last Thursday announced a voluntary pact aiming to make 50% of all vehicles sold in the US by 2030 electric.

I was in band in high school, and there was a room down the hall from the band room that we used as a practice room. Also happened that they stored the ID making equipment there, too. Tesla makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year selling offsets to other car makers.
Oops, correction -- just googled it. They made $518 million in "regulatory credits" in the first quarter of this year alone.

One theory to explain all of the policies: Enrich China and China's interests. China is the source for pretty much most of the renewables, the addictive behavioral drugs kids are being put on, and the vast bulk of the West's supply chain. By killing the petroleum industry, the West is further dependent on China for plastics, medicines, fertilizers and other products.
So China wins without war by simply laying siege to the West by denying goods at a critical time.
The other view is that the Davos crowd are going to kill billions of people with mRNA complications. That is why no new power plants, refineries or any real infrastructure. The power they are allowing to be built is to be largely unattended power sources. The policies are geared towards a world with fewer than a billion people.

I mean are a lot of people really accidentally running people over with there cars? Has anyone tracked these safety improvements to see if they actually result in fewer pedestrian deaths? Is there even a good way to track that?

A depth charge and two 500lb bombs are included with the expected torpedo. Oddly the bomb racks to make a TBD level bomber are missing from the underside of the wing center.
Oddly the instructions for kit L4807 are a mess. Prominent of the first page is the Battle of Midway art. But above this one reads 'VT-6 At Wake Island 1942.' Huh? It gets more odd further in. Step 7 tells you the model builder to install part C5 to make the level bomber. But Step 9 shows the torpedo being assembled and installed in the torpedo cradle C24 which is shown already installed in the illustration.
*The fuselage in the kit is of the original TBD production run which means little windows at the pilot's feet and the doors covering the bombardier's position have three arms per door. The planes Gay and Waldron flew were from the later attrition production run and thus lack the windows and the doors are slightly redesigned with only two arms per door.

And to squeeze out more efficiency they have to look at installing heavy batteries and motors for hybrids, then put on skinny tires for less rolling resistance. Those two additional tricks make it harder on the roads which increases wear and tear that results in worsening roadways and higher taxes to repair roads (and pay off unions).

No, I don't mean the crumple zones designed to protect the occupants. There was a big panic about pedestrians being hit by cars in the '80s or '90s so they redesigned the entire front ends of cars so that the person doesn't get their legs broken by a protruding front bumper, hit the hood which has no give because theres an engine right there, then roll over the roof of the car and SPLAT on the road.
Instead, cars are now designed where theres no protruding bumpers, and supposedly enough give in the hood (gap between the hood and the engine), that the hood is suppose to crumple, absorb a bunch of energy and the victim is supposed to roll off the car to the side. Or something.

Well, before you can die while driving at high speed in the region that KTLA serves (i.e. Los Angeles County), first you'd have to find a place where the traffic was light enough to actually speed...
I kid, but only to an extent. Everyone speeds in LA when they can. But driving significantly faster than the speed limit for an extended period of time is difficult (even if the CHiPs don't spot you) because you'll get caught at the back of a pack of cars and be forced to slow down until the traffic thins out.

Well, here's a feel good story: in that infrastructure bill in Congress there's over $10 billion slated for the MTA. And the MTA has already said that they plan on replacing a lot of their (perfectly fine) buses with ELECTRIC buses with that money. Plus the MTA got a big covid bail out, since ridership was down.
Oh, and there's still hundreds of millions of dollars left over from one of Obama's infrastructure bills.

Ran the numbers a couple of years ago. There is a simple conversion factor for the amount of energy in a gallon of gas, to kilowatt hours.
If you take all the gas just used for trucks and cars... and convert it to kilowatt hours, we would have to increase our total electricity by 130%... yes MORE THAN DOUBLE PRODUCTION... to do all electric vehicles.
At a time when we are now producing LESS total reliable energy, than before.

I think some municipality already tried playing with battery operated buses and it didn't turn out well. There wasn't enough battery to do even a level route, so they added more batteries, which cracked the bus's frame due to the excessive weight. The electric bus cost well over twice what the original propane or diesel versions cost, and lasted for a very short time (not counting cracked frames). End result, the battery buses sit in a parking lot getting baked by the sun.

I think there will be a capacity issue. But that is solveable by adding more battery packs. What isnt solveable is how heavy those buses will be and how often they will have to recharge. At least with current technology. I suspect the electric buses will have diesel back ups for many years to come.

yeah, my chevy colorado is doing that. One day it says service the TPM, the next day nothing, the next day the tire icon is on, next day check TPM, etc. It has no clue what it wants. I reset the tpm, it lasted a day, now I ignore it. It just failed inspection though because of code 442, the frigging EVAP crap. And they killed a lot of people. And they were a huge issue for horses / early cars sharing the road with them. And they were even more susceptible to "bunching" then even buses or the subway. Which is a huge issue with both buses and the subway. No bus for 20 minutes then three show up within minutes of each other. First one is packed second two are empty.

Nation building, as a would-be outside builder of nations, cannot work with the kid gloves "all cultures are equal" approach, because all cultures are not equal.
Unless you are willing to forcibly alter or abolish the things that made you intervene in the first place, as we did with Germany, as we did with Japan, you're not going to succeed. With Japan, we upended their warrior culture and turned the businessman into the modern day warrior - and even outlawed their religion for a while. It may have been harsh, but it was effective.
With Afghanistan, we said their dysfunctional culture didn't need any changes. It reverted to type. Who could have possibly expected this?

I recently had a zoom call with someone in the next time zone over. They were showing me a whole lot of data and templates, so their screen was "shared" for most of the hour. When it was over, I was convinced it was 4:15pm here. I walked out of my office and everything was dark, since it was really 5:15.
Math is hard, and adding in time zones makes it advanced math.

What authority do entertainers have to enforce vaccination. Is he going to pay people to administer Covid tests at the gate?
If not, what's the point? I'm assuming he's demanding proof of a negative Covid test. Same day? Last 24 hours? Last 3 days? Lots of chances for infection in 24 hours.

You can do that, easy enough. My '08 Suburban is equipped with TPMS. When I got it, the factory steel wheels had the TPMS sensors, and they all worked. That was in 2011. Those tires wore out, and I managed to snag a nice set of 17" GM factory aluminum wheels with decent tires on them, for $300. I put those wheels on it, with no TPMS sensors. So, every startup, I'd get a "TPMS system fault" alert, which I could cancel out using the trip odometer reset button. Everything else worked fine. Wore those tires out; bought new 17's, had them mounted, and put the sensors off the old steel wheels on them. All was well for a year or two, then sensor batteries started dying. Now it throws a "low tire" light, and my cruise control and manual shift feature are inhibited.

They are faster than Diesel buses, and quieter, and last nearly forever. Vancouver, B.C. has run electric trolley buses since about forever. Of course, you have to have a maze of overhead wires.

Well, that's a PIA. My TPMS sensor batteries (Batteries...I'm coming to hate them) died while back...doesn't seem to have any consequence, other than the annoying warning light.
Check Engine came on the other day. Finally got around to plugging the OBD reader in. "Slow O2 Sensor Bank 2 sensor 2"
I popped the hood, read the riot act to the sensor, told it to get off of it's lazy ass. Slammed the hood, reset the UBD.

Since 2000 the public schools have increasingly failed at their stated purpose which is to teach the basic skills needed to function in the society. The pipe has to be plastic so the radio signals emitted by the sensors can get out. When all the sensors are absent, apparently the ECM sees a "TPMS system fault", but does not impute that to a low tire or tires. But if one goes out, the system "sees" a low tire, and inhibits cruise control to stop you dying in a blazing wreck on the highway. ///

I just recently came across Pro Disc Golf tournaments on YouTube. It is really pretty great. I am so hooked. But then again I loved Roller Derby and the Bay City Bombers and Unlimited Hydroplane racing.

I read enough SK to get a glimpse into the machinations behind the words. I can't say I like what I saw of his muse. And it got to the point where I could about finish a novel in my head before I finished reading. I mostly got bored of SK. But he sure knows how to pull you in at first and get you interested in his world building.

The same effective decision has been made for decades by many urban school districts - but of course they never say the quiet part out loud like this. What was it? Baltimore "high school graduates" had a literacy rate near zero?
A governor explicitly stating that educational standards were being abandoned - and that this would "benefit" certain "communities".
The nation has been getting hollowed out in various ways for a while, it now seems to be entering a fairly rapid collapse phase. Collapse of quality, standards, self-respect by the public sector - the inertial wealth of the place could make for a very extended gradual down-slope.

One thing they did in grade school, we'd take turns one by one in class reading along with a story. Those of us who could read well wanted to strangle the kids who had to pore over every single word and mangle pronunciation and take forever to read a simple sentence. Gaaa!! Takes all the fun out of reading, for one thing, because there's no flow. They weren't stupid, but it has to be a huge disadvantage.

Frank Herbert is another matter entirely. I think I went through his series 12 times, always picking up a new puzzle piece I had missed.
Been a decade since I have read him. I should go back. His Dune series will be almost new to me again.

I was made the object of derision in the 4th grade in a class reading, 'cause I could and did, read the voices in a fully animated style, in full storyteller mode, having not once ever read the text in advance.
From then on, I read shit in the standard monotone, just to get through the fucking day. Bonus. First schoolyard fight was also 4th grade, 'cause I dared defend Nixon vs. RFK and his beautiful hair. I proved Nixon would support the .mil, while RFK was a pinko.
Scuffle was a draw, but I learned then what a classroom of lemmings was, long before I learned what lemmings, were.

Inside baseball here. Every control input on that DC-10 was authentic as could be. You can learn a lot about how an airliner is run from that series.
Yeah, it leaves OUT a lot. But what you see, is what the real pilots DO. Someone was one hell of a strong-willed consultant to ensure those cockpit scenes were done more for CORRECTNESS, than for DRAMA. (and the scenes were dramatic aplenty, fwiw.)

My dad's cousin died on a DC-10 in 1979.
I remember my dad getting the phone call from my uncle in LA that her plane crashed after takeoff at O'Hare.
The engine fell off the wing, and the plane crashed near a trailer park at the end of the runway.
My dad went to her memorial service in Chicago.

My best friend as a kid, his dad was Colonel who fought in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He had a stash of battle field photos. The enemy pics, alive and dead, made our hair stand on end. Still does in my mind. We should have never seen those things and if he knew we found them he would have strung us up. Memory is an odd thing, things disappear for decades and then just like that a comment about officer kids and it all comes rushing back.

They are not the majority but are gaining market share. There are no pressure sensors at all. There has to be an abs that gathers wheel rotational velocity, accel and slip. It compares each tire speed to the rest with the difference in speed being due to radius difference and therefore pressure. Old systems weren't reliable and would not report right if all 4 tired were deflated, like from temp change. But new systems are supposed to overcome this using real time spectrum analysis of the speeds. They would need to calculate some type of abar, n0, variance/covariance of the system which would change as a function of specific tire deflation.
The advantage of indirect is no pressure sensor is required.

I just did a search on TPMS spoofing. Apparently the the "pipe bomb" approach won't work with all sensors. Many contain an accelerometer that is used to wake them up out of sleep mode when the wheel begins turning. Then they send out a strong signal for a few minutes, and then go into partial sleep, not transmitting, unless they detect low pressure or high temperature. Sensors in the pressure tank won't see enough motion to "wake up".

SMH. I remember that crash, well. The photos of it at a full 90 degree bank in flight, while crashing, sucked out the soul. THAT was an unrecoverable incident, no matter what the crew did, was futility. IIRC, it was a maintainence flaw, vs. design shortcoming. But Douglas got blamed, all the same.
DC-10 and MD-11 put McDonnel Douglas out of the civil aviation world, once and for all. Pity, the DC-3 was their legacy, and still is.

Nightmare of the non TPS system-system, is that all four tires MUST BE identical in design, age and mileage, for that to work at all.
Blow a tire on a curb? You're not replacing one tire, but the whole set of four. Rolling diameters, tread-wear, temperature profiles, etc. Don't believe me? Wait 50k miles or your first curb, whichever comes first.

My friend's dad, the Colonel, never once spoke of what he experienced in WWII and made it clear he wouldn't, not unusual. But we knew to a degree from his battlefield relics and for some reason we had enough sense not to say a word, ever. For eight year olds that has to be some sort of record or an actual miracle. As an aside he let us wear his war hats. We were so proud.

My good fortune, is that I did get to meet a wide spectrum from my Mom's side, before it was too late. Much of that was of my own doing, because I knew it must be done, while possible. And so, I did. Dropping in un-announced on an Aunt in Groton CT, via Gold Wing, was a priceless experience. She is long gone, but the memory, lingers.

when i was unceremoniously kicked out in Nov '03, i was *still* and E-4, with all good time. 2 weeks short of 20 years TIG.
yes, i was, for all intents and purposes, Specialist of the Army.

Hubs did eight years in the Army, and got out as an E-4.
Mostly due to the drawdown in the early 90s.
I did only ten years total.
I was E-5 promotable when I ETS in June 2009.
Going to the 'stan was not an option, especially after three years in Iraq. Especially under the JEF.

i'm actually more than a little proud, in a perverse way, that i did what it did, because it was completely prohibited, and yet i did it. shading towards yes, we will both be there, and Herself can regale one and all of the tale of me calling to a black female CSM w/male CSM companion in the motel pkg lot in Paso Robles, CA by her last name, no rank, and she dropped him and ran to me for a hug and a "where the hell have you been"... he was most confuseled, and the stories she told him over dinner, etc, must have been in "WTF" land for him, beyond the spin i set him in, during the few minutes we talked.

Grade three sprain, just in time to deploy to Iraq.
Had to have surgery in 2004, no physical therapy due to me running the armament shop and preparing for NTC and my 2nd deployment in late 2005.

Of course we discussed COVID-19 and the delta variant. She was probably the one that gave me the most shit about taking the "horse paste" back in January. I proudly showed everyone at the table my fake vaccination record card. She pulls out her real card and its's laminated.
The penny dropped about 20 minutes ago. "When did she have to start taking oxygen?"
I don't know. But it was sometime in the last 6 months.

Never buy a car that has more computing power than you do and/or is hooked up to the internet.
I couldn't find a car to match my brains (a 32 to 53 Ford) so I've got one of the few cars with a very simple computer. No internet, no built in phone or map guidance, no rear view camera, no dvd players for the passengers, Nothing. Even my radio is a replacement and is only fm-am with a usb slot. That's the most up to date item in the car.
Surprisingly I haven't gotten charged for any upgrades or add-ons.
