Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Overnight Open Thread (8/7/21) 2nd AttemptI just got back from Walmart and I have to share this! I found myself behind a grandfather and his badly-behaved grandson. He had his hands full with the child screaming for sweets, cookies, all sorts of things. The granddad was saying in a controlled voice, "Easy, William, we won't be long . . . easy boy." Another outburst and I heard the granddad calmly say, "It's okay William. Just a couple more minutes and we'll be out of here. Hang in there, boy." At the checkout the little horror was throwing items out of the shopping cart and Granddad says again in a controlled voice, "William, William, relax buddy, don't get upset. We'll be home in five minutes, stay cool William." Well, I was really impressed, so I went outside to where the grandfather was loading his groceries and the boy into the car. I said to the Grandad, "It's none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don't know how you did it! That whole time you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying that things would be okay. William is very lucky to have you as his granddad." "Thanks," said the Granddad, "But I'm William. That little shit's name is Kevin." Funny commercial? You be the judge. Inflation. From a $40 bet to $3,000 treatment. YES, YES, YES? Would you pay £3,000 to zap your bits with a laser to have an orgasm? THERE are lasers for every type of beauty fix these days – removing hair, ironing out wrinkles, not to mention lifting and tightening all sorts of body parts. But there’s one area I never thought I’d ever let a laser go anywhere near. Teen critically hurt in DWI crash jumped on car hood to stop twin brother from driving, cops say The siblings of a West Caldwell 18-year-old charged in a drunken driving crash that seriously injured his twin brother begged him not to get behind the wheel as he tried to leave a house party in town, according to authorities. The DC Metro used to be envied as very clean and very safe. The last decade or so things went very downhill. They have had so many issues as I recall that the place was almost declared a disaster. That is a far cry from how people saw in the 80s.
Posted by: Quint at August 07, 2021 10:00 PM (CJtAX) * * * * I last rode the Metro in early 2018. Back then, they were crowing about how much it had improved in the last few years and were promising more improvements to come. My impression was that the lines I rode (Reagan National to Rockville) were probably some of the better lines. The only time things bogged down was during morning rush hour when the train was overloaded and moved slowly as it left the stations. Everybody would take turns leaving the line and shot gunning beers in the walk in cooler and we kept a mop back there to poke up the drop ceiling tiles and chuck the empty cans. One morning I came in and the kitchen manager said "You know anything about this?" and led me back to the prep room in front of the walk in where a decimated ceiling tile lay amongst probably 500 beer cans, half a dozen pint bottles and a couple of dozen whipped cream canisters. The Assistant KM was still on a ladder raking more shit out with a broom handle. Couldn't help but laugh. Our entire kitchen staff was on extra cleaning duty for the next two weeks. So the FBI wants to put people in prison for up to five years for faking a document that isn't even required anywhere by federal law? WTF?
There should be no reason to fake any health care document that no one has passed a law stipulating that it must be on a person so LE can check it - that law would be unconstitutional anyway. But even so, how can the Feds arrest someone for not having a "valid" health care vaccination card on them? What federal statute would they suggest is being violated here in order to get a federal judge, much less a local/state judge to issue a warrant for arrest? Have you noticed that a constant thing in movies is where older men are hooking up with very young women? Whether its a movie with Pierce Brosnan, Bruce Willis, or whoever, the age difference between the male and the female leads is usually father/daughter or more. It is like they are normalizing and telling old, fat, balding men that they still "have it" and women all over the place are ready and willing to fall in love with you. Sadly, many people in power buy it, and hence you get perverts in political or business power who think like those who produce these movies and truly feel that women half or a third their age really dig the older men and want to get bed down ASAP. imo, from what I can gather, subject to change -- There are variants, and the mass vaccination effort has sped up the adaptation of the new variants (because as the vaccine wanes, some virus survives, and that is the resistant variant that is harder to kill. That is why the (genuine) smart guys are saying the mass vaccination is wrong ... should only be for the vulnerable. But I think they say now "too late", the machinery is in motion for variants that will in time be resistant to the vaccines. Facts are becoming illegal ... Idiocy. For so many reasons. Delta first appeared in India, it was called the Indian variant before, for woke reasons, they started with this Greek letter bullshit. Look at India's curve: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ country/india/ The second peak there is almost a classic SIR curve. And the whole thing looks like a classic two-wave (seasonal) epidemic curve. Note it is waning, no third spike (yet). That's you delta right there. What's India's vaccination rate? less than 10% fully, and about 28% "partially" as a of now. Idiots are ramping up the vaccine, and that will make a third wave if they manage to get enough vaccinated. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at August 07, 2021 11:04 PM (Mzdiz) 362

Now, looking at the above, Denninger theorizes what's going on here, in a post this morning: https://market-ticker.org/cgi-ticker/ akcs-www?post=243182 When did we start vaccinating in mass here? Look at the US curve. We started vaccinating on the trailing side, around the first of the year. We had already peaked and were well into the tail phase when we started. What happened. We got a little uptick around April, then trailed off, and now a third wave is ticking up again. THeory: spike vaccination fucked up natural immunity of those who had recovered, thus *increasing* the susceptible fraction. The vaccines are the cause of the the third wave by fucking up natural immunity. We had peaked. We were at herd immunity. We fucked it up. I see. Now the vaccines overwrite natural immunity (and likely overwrite that preexisting cross-reactivity recognition): https://tinyurl.com/6futm93u Got to full text, Figure 2, chart G. That's what vaccination does to natural immunity. See the spike vs non-spike fraction. Total recognition is reduced, and the spike becomes the dominant fraction of the remainder. my advice is to change the moniker. CDB doesn't joke around and with that moniker people will always judge you that way. I admit I don't know a damn thing about Bitcoin. I like the idea of a currency that can not be easily manipulated.
But I admit I know very little about it and it is too late for me. You have to mine for gold, not virtually on computers, but with a shovel. I never give investment advice, but the one idea I came up with years ago was "forever" stamps. Since everything goes up over time, the price of stamps always go up, never down. you could do the same thing with half pints of Jack Daniels or a 50 rounds box of .22s. Some things will always go up in price in the modern age. So called "investments" can go the other way quickly. But I have to admit that the S&P has been pretty consistent over the decades. Sure inflation plays a major part in that.

Would anyone here personally have a moral problem with gambling at Hustler Casino in Gardena? I've wanted to check it out, but never wanted to as long as Larry Flynt was alive. Zettai, OAS is most likely to be a problem in a scenario like this. By vaccine, you're biased toward the spike, and your immune system is primed for that particular spike. Virus mutates that spike away to something completely different. Existing immune memory does nothing for it. They try to make a booster with an update spike profile. OAS will tend to make your immune system favor the previous spike antibodies, and the booster gets diminishing returns. Here's all I'll say about gambling. The expected return is less than zero. The house always wins, IOW. It's a losing proposition, statistically, and that's built in the game. That's how the house makes money. Now, say a friendly pure game of chance. That's zero expected value of return. A friendly poker game is similiar, but skill does a play a role, so a skilled player can manage a positive expected return. Posted by: qdpsteve (L2ZTs) at August 08, 2021 12:02 AM (L2ZTs) Steve, scratch tickets, and VLT's are the crack cocaine of gambling. You play, you lose, and the gambler's fallacy kicks in. (well, if I lost the last X number, I am sure to win the next one) The big lotteries are not so bad. A couple of bucks gets you in the game, and the draw is a few days hence, and there is no way to improve your odds by drawing or doubling down, whatever. And just buy one ticket. Buying more just increases your expected losses. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 08, 2021 12:08 AM (6+Jyr) 450

Now, say a friendly pure game of chance. That's zero expected value of return. A friendly poker game is similiar, but skill does a play a role, so a skilled player can manage a positive expected return.

publius, that's one of the reasons I prefer hold'em poker. You're actually not playing against the house; you're only playing against other people at the table. And for the record, casinos *rarely* employ people to play on their behalf. The casino only makes money off the poker game by charging a rake of a few dollars, which usually is paid every 8 to 10 hands. In fact this is one of the reasons a lot of casinos don't offer or don't want to offer poker; they don't make nearly as much money from it as other games, such as blackjack. that is absolutely true. They make much less of poker. They hate that the poker boom happened because they had to use so much of their space for poker rooms. But the thing is, they win every hand and they have nothing to lose because it is not their money. That alone should demonstrate how much they make on the other games. That reminds of another interesting thing about skill vs chance in various games. Not just games of chance but sports like tennis, baseball, football, etc, etc. The idea was try to come with a skill vs random chance factor. How much a particular game depended on skill vs how much random factors. I wish I could remember, he came up with values for baseball, and others, and it was interesting. Anyway, the hypothesis was there's a sweet spot that makes a game the most fun and interesting. In any game, save for a pure random chance game, if there's enough difference in skill, the most skilled player will win consistently. However, as skill becomes matched, random factors determine winner more and more. You want it to depend on skill enough that you have various high-value players who you can root for and have higher chances of winning, but yet have enough random chance to make it interesting. Back in the Dark Ages, when casino slot machines actually accepted (and paid off in) coin of the realm, I used to save up a sack of coins, and feed them into the slots on those rare occasions when I passed through Nevada. I rarely won, but I never lost much, because even a small sack of quarters is not a lot of money. I was buying entertainment.
Now that you have to buy a "players' club" card, and use that card to play the slots, or any other game, the spontaneity is gone, and so am I. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 08, 2021 12:27 AM (6+Jyr) 480

IMHO the most economical way to play poker is to play low-level tournaments.
You pay $40 or $60 or $80 and get 4000 or 8000 or 10,000 pretend chips marked 25, 50 and so on. Then you start playing. If you do well, you play longer and maybe even get paid back your entry fee plus a little more. If not, at least you capped your loss. Quint, the rake is taken every hand, but not from every player. It goes around the table and on a full table, there's 8 or 9 players.
For instance, at the game I play at most often at Hawaiian Gardens, it's $40-80 no-limit hold'em. You can buy in for $40, $80 or anywhere in between. There's a "small blind" and a "big blind." Meaning, you have to make one bet without seeing any cards, and one half- or third-bet without seeing any hands, every time it's your turn around the table, and they go by player around the table. The blinds are usually something like $2 and $1, or $3 and $1. Again, you only pay this once every 8-9 hands, as the dealer goes around the table. Also, the blinds are followed by a 'dealer' button. That means that outside of the first round of betting, you get to act last, which in poker provides a big advantage. Hope this makes sense... The games certainly exist, and they do go on, but not for the benefit of the general public, if you know what I mean. Started mostly in the '50s, when after-hours joints got started and then picked up plenty during the Pipeline Era, then was fueled somewhat by the cocaine craze, and died back some in the '90s. Pick up a copy of Kim Rich's book "Johnny's Girl." She went to school with me and her dad ran after hours joints in Eastchester among other places. I cashed once, the same time a buddy of mine made the final table at another event. I was in one area, and he was in the little arena area about 30feet away. Mrs DIG was in the top bleacher row watching the final table, and could look behind her and down to watch me sweating to last into the top 81. Fun times. I made like second lowest cash amount - 3300. The winner of the table ( 10-1 shot) gets to play in the regular tournament and is already in the money. I had a blast playing limit Omaha Hi-Lo at the Orleans when they have it going. Big swings in variability from card to card, and lots of raising by people with the nut low.
I prefer limit because I tend to make the ONE fucking mistake that wipes my stack in no limit. Plus, limit is a bit more mathematical, rather than people reading skills. It is a beautiful thing when you win both ends, having the nuts, generally winning the hi, and splitting the low. Posted by: Deplorable Ian Galt at August 08, 2021 01:18 AM (ufFY8) 564
Skilled backgammon players win probably 55 to 60 percent of their games against lower skilled opponents, the rest is chance.
I think baseball is similar. Someone- dumbass George Will? - said that 40 games, after chance, determine the season, after luck is factored out. It is that combo which makes it interesting. Posted by: Deplorable Ian Galt at August 08, 2021 12:32 AM (ufFY The logic, if that's what it is is that the best baseball teams win about 2/3 of the games they play. The worst win somewhere around 1/3. So in the 160 game season, the difference comes down to that third in the middle and how you make them work for you. I was just reading some stuff on Denninger's forum. There are actual doctors posting now, Denninger has gotten a lot of new posters over this Covid and vax stuff. It's very interesting. I was just reading a doc posting about a "nice lady" sickle cell patient he just had. A couple of weeks post 2nd jab (he says he quietly advises his patients not to get the jabs). ANother specialist scared this patient into getting the jab. Anyway, patient was in there, in serious trouble and he posted the details. She was afraid to go to the ER (cause of Delta!), and he did a d-Dimer test. Her d-Dimer was 1187, which he put three !!! after. He got her to the ER right away, over her objections. Massive pulmonary embolism, and they had to airlift her to another medical center to handle it, it was so abd. He went through how abnormal this way, and says he's gonna write this up as vaccine induced, cause that's the only explanation. He said he hopes he doesn't have to review her autopsy, which he fears is likely. Another doc posted he was treating 4 early stage breast cancer patients. All had gotten the jab within about 1 month. He prescribed some standard drug. It has a risk of causing blood clots, less than 1%, and he checked all their risk factors. There were none. Well, over four developed blood clots, pulmonary or in the legs, and all four wound in ICU for it. He said in his 26 years of prescribing that drug to hundreds of his patients, he has seen only 6 develop clots. Now he gets 4 serious one all at once. So, "clot shot" is probably pretty accurate. I don't pick stocks. My best was STZ before it became famous Another good pick was Waste Management. But both of those are dated and i chose them for reasons that existed at that time. I do think Boeing is different because it is the only company Democrats and Republicans support. But I know for a fact that company has had very dark days, when you choose the wrong people things go bad for you.
My general advice is the S&P only because both parties want it to go up. There are favored companies for sure, and we know them. Others will do much better. But the left seems like thety will not allow the market to go down if there is an election up for grabs. ?You have to realize, Wall Street is all in on the Left. I subscribe to the diversified portfolio theory, and make sure that I collected a diverse selection. I remember reading that one really needs at least 40 stocks to be diversified, and if you hold them, the probability of a loss is small. (Not nonzero, but small).
Of course the easiest diversification is to get the S and P (SPY). Then you will do what the market does. If I had an answer farmer, I would give it to you. Personally I wold go for the railroad but I am old school . PFE has a lot of heat and they might help them. In the end you have to read managagment's discussion and analysis from the annual reports.
Those discussions have another term because they are often done on cheap paper, that no one wants to read. But that is where they tell you the real story. By law they have to be legit there and they will tell you all the issues. I am not telling you to go off a company or go my way. I don't know my way, it has changed over the times. For many I think the S&P is a good thing. For others, they need to have a personal investment in the company's success. Posted by: Quint at August 08, 2021 03:09 AM (CJtAX) 605

I am sorry to learn that Mike Sexton died at 72 years of age. He was the best ambassador poker had in the modern age. I mentioned him because he stood out as a gentlemen. Sorry to hear about his passing.

I took the Foreign Service Test ages ago. I wish I knew you got 20 extra points for going to Amherst. It also would of helped if I knew it was timed and there was a prep test. The worst part was I didn't know about the prep test. I knew every country on a map, but they didn't ask that. Posted by: Quint at August 08, 2021 03:35 AM (CJtAX) 610
