Saturday Overnight Open Thread (8/7/21) 2nd Attempt
I just got back from Walmart and I have to share this! I found myself behind a grandfather and his badly-behaved grandson. He had his hands full with the child screaming for sweets, cookies, all sorts of things. The granddad was saying in a controlled voice, "Easy, William, we won't be long . . . easy boy."
Another outburst and I heard the granddad calmly say, "It's okay William. Just a couple more minutes and we'll be out of here. Hang in there, boy." At the checkout the little horror was throwing items out of the shopping cart and Granddad says again in a controlled voice, "William, William, relax buddy, don't get upset. We'll be home in five minutes, stay cool William." Well, I was really impressed, so I went outside to where the grandfather was loading his groceries and the boy into the car. I said to the Grandad, "It's none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don't know how you did it! That whole time you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying that things would be okay. William is very lucky to have you as his granddad." "Thanks," said the Granddad, "But I'm William. That little shit's name is Kevin."

I last rode the Metro in early 2018. Back then, they were crowing about how much it had improved in the last few years and were promising more improvements to come. My impression was that the lines I rode (Reagan National to Rockville) were probably some of the better lines. The only time things bogged down was during morning rush hour when the train was overloaded and moved slowly as it left the stations.

We used to smuggle a case of Miller Lite cans into work at one kitchen job I had in my early 20s.
Everybody would take turns leaving the line and shot gunning beers in the walk in cooler and we kept a mop back there to poke up the drop ceiling tiles and chuck the empty cans.
One morning I came in and the kitchen manager said "You know anything about this?" and led me back to the prep room in front of the walk in where a decimated ceiling tile lay amongst probably 500 beer cans, half a dozen pint bottles and a couple of dozen whipped cream canisters. The Assistant KM was still on a ladder raking more shit out with a broom handle.
Couldn't help but laugh. Our entire kitchen staff was on extra cleaning duty for the next two weeks.

imo, from what I can gather, subject to change -- There are variants, and the mass vaccination effort has sped up the adaptation of the new variants (because as the vaccine wanes, some virus survives, and that is the resistant variant that is harder to kill.

That statute is intended to prevent the fraudulent use of a government agency's documents to con either the government or the public out of something material - ie property. Nothing in that statute suggests that the CDC is an authorized licensor of vaccination proof and if you copy that card you are conning the public or the government out some sort of material property. You'd get laughed out of court. Zettai, OAS is most likely to be a problem in a scenario like this. By vaccine, you're biased toward the spike, and your immune system is primed for that particular spike.
Virus mutates that spike away to something completely different. Existing immune memory does nothing for it. They try to make a booster with an update spike profile. OAS will tend to make your immune system favor the previous spike antibodies, and the booster gets diminishing returns.

Here's all I'll say about gambling. The expected return is less than zero. The house always wins, IOW. It's a losing proposition, statistically, and that's built in the game. That's how the house makes money.
Now, say a friendly pure game of chance. That's zero expected value of return. A friendly poker game is similiar, but skill does a play a role, so a skilled player can manage a positive expected return.

that is true, no doubt there. I know in VA poker games not for profit were legal for ages is they were not "regular". Back in the day a skilled player had a huge advantage. The swings were still crazy and if you didn't have the roll, you would likely end up felted.

publius, that's one of the reasons I prefer hold'em poker. You're actually not playing against the house; you're only playing against other people at the table. And for the record, casinos *rarely* employ people to play on their behalf.
The casino only makes money off the poker game by charging a rake of a few dollars, which usually is paid every 8 to 10 hands. In fact this is one of the reasons a lot of casinos don't offer or don't want to offer poker; they don't make nearly as much money from it as other games, such as blackjack.

I recall reading about Hold'em Poker in Gambling Times in the 70s. I was too young to fully understand it, we played draw. But I wish I had learned it because there was a time the advantage was extreme.

A lot of people complain that you can't beat a low limit table because no one folds. I get it, I get the frustration, it is not by the book. But if you believe the math it is a good thing. But variance is a true killer and also the price of playing in a casino.

I do remember reading something about the House sometimes makes more than their expected return on some games. And the reason is because the players play *poorly*. That is some guy thinks he got a "system" and plays against what the odds dictate. House wins even more.

It's all made to the same standard of safety and quality. The veterinary stuff is just packaged in formats best suited to the livestock being treated. Most animals don't "do" pills. Cats, for example, LOL.
The ones to avoid are the "pour-on" formulations for cattle, which are literally poured onto the animal's hide. There may be solvents and carriers, and other drugs that should not be taken orally by humans.

That reminds of another interesting thing about skill vs chance in various games. Not just games of chance but sports like tennis, baseball, football, etc, etc.
The idea was try to come with a skill vs random chance factor. How much a particular game depended on skill vs how much random factors. I wish I could remember, he came up with values for baseball, and others, and it was interesting.
Anyway, the hypothesis was there's a sweet spot that makes a game the most fun and interesting. In any game, save for a pure random chance game, if there's enough difference in skill, the most skilled player will win consistently. However, as skill becomes matched, random factors determine winner more and more.
You want it to depend on skill enough that you have various high-value players who you can root for and have higher chances of winning, but yet have enough random chance to make it interesting.

Skilled backgammon players win probably 55 to 60 percent of their games against lower skilled opponents, the rest is chance.
I think baseball is similar. Someone- dumbass George Will? - said that 40 games, after chance, determine the season,after luck is factored out.
It is that combo which makes it interesting.

For instance, at the game I play at most often at Hawaiian Gardens, it's $40-80 no-limit hold'em. You can buy in for $40, $80 or anywhere in between.
There's a "small blind" and a "big blind." Meaning, you have to make one bet without seeing any cards, and one half- or third-bet without seeing any hands, every time it's your turn around the table, and they go by player around the table. The blinds are usually something like $2 and $1, or $3 and $1. Again, you only pay this once every 8-9 hands, as the dealer goes around the table.
Also, the blinds are followed by a 'dealer' button. That means that outside of the first round of betting, you get to act last, which in poker provides a big advantage.

With a few execptions, maybe 20 percent of the time at best, the casino makes money off every hand. You personally are not raked if you never put money in.

Searching around, I found this. The luck-skill axis for various sports. The ranking of the big ones, from luck to skill is hockey, football, baseball, soccer, basketball.
Apparently some hold that baseball is at the sweet spot, but football is just a little bit below toward the luck end. Basketball is too far toward the skill end and more would find it boring. Basketball bores the hell out of me, that's for sure.
Chess, however, is on the pure skill side. Slot machines and roulette are near the pure luck end.
And, the stock market is closer to the luck end. :-)

We had David Green up here, who was a nice Jewish furrier, but he played the WSOP. Won big, as I recall. Sort of his claim to fame. He funded a lot of stuff, including some nice parks and the local mikvah. My dad designed the mikvah for him, at least the structural part. Most folks don't know it exists, which I guess is the point. Anyway, great guy.

You may have missed my point. The games certainly exist, and they do go on, but not for the benefit of the general public, if you know what I mean. Started mostly in the '50s, when after-hours joints got started and then picked up plenty during the Pipeline Era, then was fueled somewhat by the cocaine craze, and died back some in the '90s. Pick up a copy of Kim Rich's book "Johnny's Girl." She went to school with me and her dad ran after hours joints in Eastchester among other places. He ended up murdered but the story is something else. Anyway, it's around but not mob run anymore.

I cashed once, the same time a buddy of mine made the final table at another event. I was in one area, and he was in the little arena area about 30feet away. Mrs DIG was in the top bleacher row watching the final table, and could look behind her and down to watch me sweating to last into the top 81.
Fun times. I made like second lowest cash amount - 3300. My buddy ended up eighth I think, about 20k?

BTW, check the wsop site. They have a new event "The Flipament". $1000 I think. First hand, you get dealt three hole cards, throw one away. Everyone is all-in. The winner of the table ( 10-1 shot) gets to play in the regular tournament and is already in the money. I think they limit the number of chances to get in the tournament, so the number of pros will be limited.

There is a reason Phillip Morris was supposed to be destroyed and has been for forty years. That is likely why it is one of the best performing stocks in American history. They said all the reasons it should collapse, but they were wrong at every time.

I prefer limit because I tend to make the ONE fucking mistake that wipes my stack in no limit. Plus, limit is a bit more mathematical, rather than people reading skills.
It is a beautiful thing when you win both ends, having the nuts, generally winning the hi, and splitting the low.

The logic, if that's what it is is that the best baseball teams win about 2/3 of the games they play. The worst win somewhere around 1/3. So in the 160 game season, the difference comes down to that third in the middle and how you make them work for you.

I was just reading some stuff on Denninger's forum. There are actual doctors posting now, Denninger has gotten a lot of new posters over this Covid and vax stuff.
It's very interesting. I was just reading a doc posting about a "nice lady" sickle cell patient he just had. A couple of weeks post 2nd jab (he says he quietly advises his patients not to get the jabs). ANother specialist scared this patient into getting the jab.
Anyway, patient was in there, in serious trouble and he posted the details. She was afraid to go to the ER (cause of Delta!), and he did a d-Dimer test. Her d-Dimer was 1187, which he put three !!! after. He got her to the ER right away, over her objections. Massive pulmonary embolism, and they had to airlift her to another medical center to handle it, it was so abd.
He went through how abnormal this way, and says he's gonna write this up as vaccine induced, cause that's the only explanation. He said he hopes he doesn't have to review her autopsy, which he fears is likely.

Electricity ain't going anywhere, so it should be stable.
Take that for what it is worth, I just glanced at it for a few minutes. I have, and still own a number of utilities for a while.

The Mini Main Event looks interesting. It's still $1k to enter (the Millionaire Maker's gone up to $1.5k) and is an immediate freezeout, meaning no re-entries which I like a lot. Until people can't buy in again and again, it's really just a regular cash poker game.

Another doc posted he was treating 4 early stage breast cancer patients. All had gotten the jab within about 1 month. He prescribed some standard drug. It has a risk of causing blood clots, less than 1%, and he checked all their risk factors. There were none.
Well, over four developed blood clots, pulmonary or in the legs, and all four wound in ICU for it. He said in his 26 years of prescribing that drug to hundreds of his patients, he has seen only 6 develop clots. Now he gets 4 serious one all at once.
So, "clot shot" is probably pretty accurate.

PFE Pfizer. I should have recognized it since I own some shares.LOL
Dividend is decent at 3.x percent, PE is 19, which is all right if we expect growth. Stock price is on a run up and high, so if you have to sell, it would be the time.
iF YOU HAVE TO SELL.
If you expect the company to tank, then it is a good time to sell.
I can't make that decision for you. Depends on you situation.
My guess is that PFE is more volatile than PNW.
I am just a guy with an opinion and an asshole, so take what I am saying with many grains of salt.

My general advice is the S&P only because both parties want it to go up. There are favored companies for sure, and we know them. Others will do much better. But the left seems like thety will not allow the market to go down if there is an election up for grabs. ?You have to realize, Wall Street is all in on the Left.

that is not a bad idea. The irony is Warren Buffet made his billions by not being diversified. He will tell you this in a lucid moment. But I agree, for most, picking stocks is a bad idea. Any company can go down for any number of reasons.
I remember the Nifty Fifty from the 70s, most of those companies don't exist today.

Those discussions have another term because they are often done on cheap paper, that no one wants to read. But that is where they tell you the real story. By law they have to be legit there and they will tell you all the issues.
I am not telling you to go off a company or go my way. I don't know my way, it has changed over the times. For many I think the S&P is a good thing. For others, they need to have a personal investment in the company's success.

I took the Foreign Service Test ages ago. I wish I knew you got 20 extra points for going to Amherst. It also would of helped if I knew it was timed and there was a prep test. The worst part was I didn't know about the prep test. I knew every country on a map, but they didn't ask that.
