ONT, ONT, ONT Onward!

Welcome to the Friday ONT, home of the best clips, stills and general insanity from the previous week. What's on the docket for tonight?

forcast.jpg

A walk down memory lane

video game consels.jpg

Which was your first home game system? Your favorite? Mine was pong (although I think we had a version made by Odyssey), and my favorite isn't pictured, it was the Atari 5200. That should have been a great system, but it didn't have self-centering joysticks, so people hated it. I understand why. I once played one that had been modified with little springs to make the joysticks self-centering, and it was brilliant.

cheese wheel.jpg

This picture has been around for a while. Whenever I see it posted, it's interesting to read the comments, because they split in tone right down the middle. Half are like 'Cheese? Eww, that's so stupid”, and “What a hick!” while the other half are along the lines of “That's so cool!”, “A gift he made himself, awesome!” and “26lbs of cheese? Marry that man”. I suspect that which side of the fence the commenter falls on is a pretty good hint as to their political orientation, too, with libs being in the former group and conservatives the later.

What's in a name?

At last, the ending!
This clip is usually passed around as a never ending gif. The truck gets closer and closer to the bollard, but never hits. Here is the actual crash.

Spider Man, now with real AR action!

100 But then, with metal, it's often: clean guitar (or
acoustic) intro, followed by 3 or 4 minutes of crazy fast riffs,
followed by one or more leads (depending on the number of gunslingers),
followed by some kind of creepy bridge, followed by the outro.

So. Never mind.

And....I still have that Atari 800, two WICO joysticks, somewhere around here.

Have gone through a lot of PC's since then, but have kept the Atari. And although it is pretty primitive by today's standards, it was actually very well built.

And have an XBox around here somewhere that belonged to my kids (they're all growd up now). And a Wii , too .
The Wii is actually still a lot of fun to play.

I have the PS3. Some friends and I still play Battlefield Bad Company 2 a few times a month and you should too. See you there. My family has the Wii, it was my kids first tea game console and it doesn't get played as much as our PS3 but it's still awesome.

268 Great music image, but I gotta take issue with some of the song lengths. No classic rock track worth caring about is over in less than about 4.5 minutes. Blues and especially metal (which is when blues goes to the opera) is often twice that.

The whole 3 minute thing basically died with The Beatles, but maybe it lives on in pop music or something.

272 @240 That one was something like the tenth in the series. The first Zork preceded it by more than a decade.

--------

Yeah.

Zork Nemesis was the odd-ball of the bunch. It was full-on FMV (though I don't think it was the first Zork game like that, and it wasn't the last), and it didn't have any of the silliness that the other Zork games had. Also, the other Zork games had a semi-continuity that sort of tied them together (though only if you didn't look too closely). Zork Nemesis didn't bother with any of that.

It was also *extremely* difficult.

So, dsd is a relatively new format when the ps3 comes out and Sony barely even mentions it's existence.

It was incredibly difficult to work on. I think that is actually one of the biggest reasons Sony isn't as interested in pursuing backwards compatibility to the extent Xbox has. 341 Apparently Salon has seen fit to hire a 12 year old school girl named Brett Bachman to write childish hit pieces on Tucker Carlson - when I say childish, every 12 year old around the world ought to be offended - because that's how completely infantile this piece is:

https://tinyurl.com/a5wmsrxu

It basically quotes Carlson's show without any rebuttable. I guess that is because being mentally sub-12 years old means that anyone intellectually older by, oh, 30 years or so, means you only have to just point and snicker and every elementary school kid that reads Salon will get it.

Brett needs to probably start over in life...preferably as teenage counter help at his local Mall's Orange Julius...

344 So finally went through today's mail and found a letter from the VA. All about the COVID and moving the goalposts while pushing fear.

Studies show that if you are vaccinated, it is less likely that you will become severely ill, require hospitalization or become at risk of dying. In fact, a recent Cleveland Clinic study showed that over 99% of those hospitalized due to COVID-19 were not fully vaccinated.

And to prove how efficient the VA is, the letter is dated June 21, 2021. And today is August 6, 2021. Blazing response there VA.

If you've seen the video as well, it's pretty funny as well as listenable. Makes fun of a lot of "contemporary" (well, contemporary for the day) singers as well. Posted by: westminsterdogshow at August 06, 2021 10:47 PM (/UQ/R

It depends a lot on the child...and when he or she was born relative to their mother's age. As women get older, their eggs are not genetically the equivalent of a woman's eggs from 5 or 10 years before, obviously - there can be incomplete genic coding. You can get spontaneous chromosomal abnormalities, micro-deletions or additions on certain pairs of chromosomes at conception.

How does this play out when learning to riding bikes or just acquiring skills that kids do without parental assistance? Because these abnormalities almost all come with some autistic spectrum issues. Kids typically don't need parents to show them how to ride bikes or dive off into a pool - other kids and just natural curiosity do the trick. But kids with chromosomal abnormalities don't pick up these skills, not even with parental guidance - guidance that 99.99% of all kids find completely unnecessary. I know - and I wish I didn't know what I know.

422 Looks like I'm hours behind on comments. Having a strange sense of deja vu reading all the game machine and vidgaming comments. Like it's all been said before. Including my own thoughts.

1970, at college, my roomie let slip his password, and I snuck off to teletype terminals and played text-based "Hamurabi" or whatever it was called on his account. Saved & retrieved games on hole-punch paper tape. Space-age!

IBM 1620, I think...

Of course, that was a few years after I went around messing up all the terminals at the IBM exhibit at the NY World's Fair in 1964...

Posted by: fly gal at August 07, 2021 12:58 AM (1biAv)

433 One would think that if legitimate, trending complications arose from vaccination, we'd be seeing evidence of them. Such things don't really require much investigation--they percolate up. We're not seeing that.

Hard disagree. If I get a Crohn's flare at any time, doctor doesn't tell me why it happened. I can suspect what caused it - but that's all it is - my suspicion. And I might sound like a kook.

439 Normally, vaccine manufacturers are immune from lawsuits since the 1980s or maybe 1990s. You have to sue the taxpayer (gubbmint), they haz a "special" fund set aside with IOUs of IOUs in it. This version of "Choose Your Own Adventure" injectables is a different deal altogether, because it's based on a bioweapon law or virus jiggery-pokery that Shrub signed? Something along those lines. You can sue, but it has to be filed in a D.C. Court or somesuch.

Short Answer: Forget It.

441 I'm watching "The American," with George Clooney.

I'm surprised they could screen this in theatres... The projectionists must have all died of boredom halfway through the first showing, but not before the projectors burst into flame because they must have printed this shit on cheese-based filmstock.

449 >> You have to sue the taxpayer (gubbmint), they haz a "special" fund set aside with IOUs of IOUs in it.

The "normal" vaccine injury fund is the VICP, Vaccine INjury Compensation Fund. It is "funded" as it were by an excise tax of 75 cents per vaccine administered. Of late it pays out around $200M per year, give or take, and has paid out a total of $4B over the entire run. The bar for proof to win a claim is fairly high.

Now, the special one, based on a law indeed signed by the Shrub in 2005, is the CICP, or Countermeasures Injury Compensation Fund. It is not funded by an direct mechanism. The bar is much higher than the VICP, and indeed one has to file suit in the DC district courts. Very high bar.

"Countermeasures" are anything the HHS Secretary designates as a countermeasure against a bioweapon attack, pandemic, or other public health emergency.

Covid is so defined, and thus all the clot-shots fall under the CICP. No claim has every yet been filed. It wouldn't get very far. Some may try, but they won't get anywhere.
